Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/$\psi$ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

Complete dislocation of the globe, inferiorly into the maxillary sinus, medially into the ethmoid sinus, or superiorly into the anterior cranial fossa, can occur with significant blunt facial trauma. The degree of injury to the globe, its adnexal structures, and the optic nerve is dependent on the extent of the dislocation. Complete traumatic subluxation of the globe into the maxillary sinus is associated with severe injury to the periocular structures and represents a challenging and unique reconstructive process rarely encountered in published studies. The present case report represents only the 15th reported case of complete orbital prolapse into the maxillary sinus. Controversy exists regarding the definitive treatment of traumatic globe dislocations, the risk of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO), the sequela of postenucleation socket syndrome, and prophylactic steroid treatment to decrease the incidence of SO and traumatic optic neuropathy.

The disposition in mice of the cannabimimetics JWH-018 and JWH-073 in blood and brain following inhalation of the smoke from the herbal incense product (HIP) “Magic Gold” containing 3.6% JWH-018, 5.7% JWH-073 and less than 0.1% JWH-398 (w/w) is presented. Specimens were analyzed by HPLC/MS/MS. The validation of the method is also presented. Five C57BL6 mice were sacrificed 20 min after exposure to the smoke of 200 mg of “Magic Gold” and a second set of five exposed mice were sacrificed after 20 h. Twenty minutes after exposure to “Magic Gold” smoke, blood concentrations of JWH-018 ranged from 42 to 160 ng/mL (mean: 88 ng/mL ± 42) and those of JWH-073 ranged from 67 to 244 ng/mL (mean: 134 ng/mL ± 62). Brain concentrations 20 min after exposure to “Magic Gold” smoke for JWH-018 ranged from 225 to 453 ng/g (mean: 317 ng/g ± 81) and those of JWH-073 ranged from 412 to 873 ng/g (mean: 584 ng/g ± 163). Twenty hours after exposure to “Magic Gold” smoke, JWH-018 was detected and quantified in only two of the five blood samples. Blood concentrations of JWH-018 were 3.4 ng/mL and 9.4 ng/mL. JWH-073 was detected in only one blood specimen 20 h after exposure at 4.3 ng/mL. Brain concentrations 20 h post exposure for JWH-018 ranged from 7 to 32 ng/g (mean: 19 ng/g ± 9). JWH-073 was not detected in 20 h post exposure brain specimens. JWH-398 was not detected in any of the blood or brain samples. The disposition data presented with the limited data available from human experience provide reasonable expectations for forensic toxicologists in JWH-018 or JWH-073 cases. As with THC after smoking marijuana, blood and brain concentrations of JWH-018 and JWH-073 after HIP smoking can be expected to rise initially to readily detected values, and then drop dramatically over the next few hours to several ng/mL or ng/g, and finally to be at extremely low or undetectable concentrations by 24 h apparently due to extensive biotransformation, and redistribution to body fat.

v a Actinomyces are gram-positive, nonacid-fast, branching filamentous prokaryotic microorganisms with anaerobic or microaerophilic requirements. Actinoyces species are part of the normal flora of the ropharyngeal cavity, specifically concentrated in he tonsillar crypts, the surface of carious teeth, and he gingival pocket. Actinomycosis is rarely a athologic concern because of the organism’s low irulence and does not appear to be an opportunistic isease because there is no specific predisposition oward immunocompromised individuals. Diect trauma, tooth extraction, root canal therapy, and eriodontal or periapical abscesses compromise the ntegrity of the oral mucosa and are believed to be the ost common mechanisms of pathogenesis. The principal bacteria in humans is Actinomyces israelii, a normal inhabitant of the oral cavity. Other members of the Actinomycetaceae family that are involved in human pathogenesis include A viscosus (40%), A naeslundii (5%), A odontolyticus (2%), and A meyeri (1%). Cervicofacial actinomycosis presnts as a chronic suppurative infection that typically gnores traditional fascial planes and is associated ith multiple fistulae tracts. The granulation-type leions harbor colonies of actinomyces and other baceria and promote a significant inflammatory response n the surrounding tissues. If the disease follows a ong-term course, the inflammation leads to fibrosis nd scar tissue formation, which in turn decreases xygen perfusion and creates an anaerobic environ

As children participate in more cutting and collision sports, there are more foot and ankle injuries. Congenital problems can also lead to sports injuries by stiffening the foot or by causing chronic pain. This article reviews the common congenital (tarsal coalition, accessory navicular, and os subtibiale) and traumatic causes of foot and ankle pain in the child and adolescent athlete. The diagnosis and treatment of these relatively common disorders are provided.

The genetic program through which a specific transcription factor regulates a biological response is fundamental to our understanding how instructions in the genome are implemented. The emergence of DNA microarray technology for gene expression analysis has generated vast numbers of target genes resulting from specific transcription factor activity. We use the oncogenic transcription factor c-Myc as proof-of-principle that human genome sequence analysis and scanning of a specific gene by chromatin immunoprecipitation can be coupled to identify target transcription factor binding sequences. We focused on nucleophosmin, also known as B23, which was identified as a candidate Myc-responsive gene from a subtractive hybridization screen, and we found that sequences in intron 1, and not 5' sequences in the proximal promoter, are bound by c-Myc in vivo. Hence, a scanning chromatin immunoprecipitation (SChIP) strategy is useful in analyzing functional transcription factor-binding sites.

This series of studies describes the development of a measure of emotional intelligence based on the model of emotional intelligence developed by Salovey and Mayer [Salovey, P. & Mayer, J. D. (1990). Emotional intelligence. Imagination, Cognition and Personality, 9, 185–211.]. A pool of 62 items represented the different dimensions of the model. A factor analysis of the responses of 346 participants suggested the creation of a 33-item scale. Additional studies showed the 33-item measure to have good internal consistency and testretest reliability. Validation studies showed that scores on the 33-item measure 1. (a) correlated with eight of nine theoretically related constructs, including alexithymia, attention to feelings, clarity of feelings, mood repair, optimism and impulse control; 2. (b) predicted first-year college grades; 3. (c) were significantly higher for therapists than for therapy clients or for prisoners; 4. (d) were significantly higher for females than males, consistent with prior findings in studies of emotional skills; 5. (e) were not related to cognitive ability and 6. (f) were associated with the openness to experience trait of the big five personality dimensions.

The analogous process to quark pair production in e{sup +} e{sup {minus}} annihilation is the hard-scattering quark exchange process in {gamma}{gamma} interactions. This hard-scattering process is expected to dominate the cross section at high transverse momenta of the produced quarks. Experimentally, one has looked for this process in two-jet as well as inclusive particle production and has found a relatively low PT onset of hard scattering in {gamma}{gamma} interactions. This report examines the issue in more detail (high statistics) for charged particle inclusive production and checks if the heavier flavors display a similar behavior in inclusive K{sup 0} production.

Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e + e − annihilation at √ s =29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b (b) quark decays to a positive (negative) lepton to be 0.17 −0.08 +0.15 , with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38.

We determined the frequency of antithyroglobulin and antimicrosomal antibodies in 173 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients. (We found antithyroid antibodies in 8% (5/65) of patients with DSM-III major depression, 13% (4/31) with biploar disorder, and in 0% (0/4) of those with schizoaffective disorder.) The rate of antibody occurrence was unrelated to lithium exposure either within individual diagnostic categories or for the sample as a whole. The overall frequency of positive antithyroid antibody titers in patients with DSM-III affective disorder, 9% (9/99), did not differ from that in patients with nonaffective disorders, 10% (7/68). However, patients with bipolar affective disorder-mixed or bipolar affective disorder-depressed had a higher rate of positive antithyroid antibody titers than other patients. Our findings confirm earlier reports that thyroid disorders may be particularly common in patients with bipolar affective disorder, even in the absence of lithium exposure. However, as antithyroid antibodies also occurred at a relatively high rate in nonaffective disorders, the possible psychiatric effects of autoimmune thyroiditis do not appear to be limited to affective dysregulation.

The Mark II detector has been upgraded in preparation for its role as the first detector to take data at the Stanford Linear Collider. The new detector components include the central drift chamber, the time-of-flight system, the coil, the endcap electromagnetic calorimeters and the beam energy and luminosity measuring devices. There have also been improvements in detector hermeticity. All of the major components were installed for a test run at the PEP storage ring (√s = 29 GeV) in 1985. This paper describes the upgraded detector, including its trigger and data acquisition systems, and gives performance figures for its components. Future improvements are also discussed.

During ODP Leg 103, serpentinized peridotite (clinopyroxene-spinel harzburgite) was cored within the basement approximatively at the boundary between the North Atlantic oceanic curst to the west, and the thinned continental crust of the Galicia passive margin (Spain) to the east. The exposure of mantle derived peridotite on the seafloor occurred at the end of the period of rifting, roughly 110 Ma ago. Ductile shear zones observed in the cored peridotite are consistent with movements along a deep low-angle, normal fault rooted within the upper mantle and dipping eastward, beneath the Galicia margin. To explain the tectonic denudation of the mantle at the ocean-continent boundary, we use a non-uniform stretching model for the lithosphere, set up from the Wernicke's model (1985).

We consider three broad classes of nonstandard models for b quark decay: (1) b → llq with charged or neutral leptons of arbitrary flavor; (2) b → l q q ; and (3) b → qa − where a − is a Higgs boson or hyperpion. For these classes of models we have calculated the charged energy fraction and the inclusive yields of electrons, muons, protons, and lambdas. We demonstrate that these model predictions are inconsistent with CLEO measurements at the γ (4S).

Human eye bank corneas were preserved in M-K medium for varying periods of time after which viability of the endothelial cells was evaluated by vital staining and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Endothelial viability and ultrastructural integrity was maintained in some corneas up to four days. Twenty-five consecutive keratoplasties were performed utilizing human donor material stored in M-K medium. There were clear grafts in 92% of the cases and there were no primary graft failures. After the ninth postoperative week, the average central corneal thickness was 0.47 mm and 23 of the 25 grafts remained clear to moderately clear. All of the donor material used for keratoplasty was stored in M-K medium for less than 80 hours.

We use data from the Mark II experiment at PEP to search for the process B→h 0 X for m h 0 between 50 and 210 MeV/ c 2 . No evidence for the Higgs boson is seen in this mass range. The limit obtained rules out the standard Higgs boson for masses between 70 and 210 MeV/ c 2 and significantly constrains extensions of the Higgs sector.

We have searched for the decay τ-→Π-ηvτ using the MARK II detector at the PEP e+e- storage ring. No evidence for the decay is found; the upper limit for the branching ratio is B(τ-→Π-ηvτ)

With appropriate precautions, psychotropic agents can be used in the considerable number of patients requiring concurrent treatment for peptic ulcer, and especially its primary form, duodenal ulcer. After discussing the recent advances in the treatment of ulcers, particularly the striking gains achieved with the H 2 receptor blockers, the authors examine the coordination of that treatment with the administration of antianxiety agents, antidepressants, neuroleptics, and lithium. They also assess the extent to which certain psychotropics themselves have a favorable effect on the evolution of ulcers.

Fine conductive fibers have been used to measure transverse beam dimensions of a few microns at the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC). The beam profile is obtained by scanning a fiber across the beam in steps as small as 1 μm, and recording the secondary emission signal at each step, using a charge sensitive amplifier. We first outline the mechanical construction and the analogue electronics of the wire scanner. We then describe its performance in test beams and in actual operation. The article closes with a brief discussion of performance limitations of such a beam profile monitor.

Results are presented from Fermilab E-400 on the production of charmed baryons and mesons at a mean energy of 640 GeV. We show evidence for the charm-strange baryon, ..xi../sub c//sup +/, and present our measurements of its mass, width, lifetime, cross section and relative branching fractions, and the A, x/sub f/, p/sub t/, and particle/antiparticle dependence of the state. We show evidence for both the ..sigma../sub c//sup 2 +/ and ..sigma../sub c//sup 0/, and present measurements of three mass differences, ..sigma../sub c//sup 2 +/ - ..sigma../sub c//sup 0/, ..sigma../sub c//sup 0/ - ..lambda../sub c//sup +/, and ..sigma../sub c//sup 2 +/ - ..lambda../sub c//sup +/. Measurements of the A dependence and particle/antiparticle ratios for ..sigma../sub c/ production are also presented. We show preliminary results on the ratio of two decay modes of the D/sup 0/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup +/K/sup -/ and D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sub 0/anti K/sub 0/. The latter mode has not been previously observed. 8 refs., 10 figs.

We determine that the average probability for a semdeptonlc decay of a hadron lnmally containing a b quark to produce a positive lepton is less than 0 12 at the 90% confidence level and set upper hmlts on B°B ° rmxing. New knowledge of the weak mixing angles, im- posed by the long B lifetime [1,2], a lower bound on the t quark mass [3], and a small ratio [4] of F(b-*u)/ P(b ~ c), has led to predictions that B 0 mesons and, to a much lesser extent, B 0 mesons should exhibit mixing [5,6]. Recently, the CLEO collaboration ,2 has reported an upper limit on B0B 0 mixing from the rate of like.sign dileptons produced in the decay of the T(4s). The UA1 collaboration [8] has observed like-sign dimuon events, leading to speculations in the literature [9] that these events could arise from B s 0 - B - 0 s mixing. In this letter, we report a measurement of dflepton rates in e+e - annihilation at an energy above the B 0 production threshold. Here, we always imply the charge conjugate reaction. We use t h e Particle Data Group convention that B (B) hadrons in t h e absence of mixing decay into positive (negative) lep- tons. The t~pes_of neutral B m e s o n s are denoted by B~ = bd and B~ = bs. The CLEO collaboration has set an upper limit on the di- lepton ratio Y n q = ( N n q n q + N~O=O)/N~O~O = N~±/N +- ~a va~a nd~d ndDd The limit set isYB~ < 0.30 at 90% C L under the assump- tion of equal semileptortic branching ratios. The synthesis of new aryloxyacetamidines of potential medicinal interest as antihypertensives was undertaken. The preparation of the unsubstituted, N-methyl and N,N-dimethyl amidines was carried out by the Pinner synthesis or a modification of this process. The N,N,N′-trimethylaryloxyacetamidines necessitated preparation by another procedure. Fifteen amidines and nine intermediates not previously reported in the literature have been prepared and characterized. 2-Thymoloxyacetamidine, 2-(2,6-xylyloxy)acetamidine, 2-(2,6-dichlorophenoxy)acetamidine, 2-(2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy)acetamidine, 2-benzyloxyacetamidine, and their N-methyl and N,N-dimethyl derivatives were evaluated for their potential cardiovascular effects. None of these compounds showed any potent pharmacological activities in a general screen or when tested as norepinephrine-depleting agents or as adrenergic neuron-blocking agents.

The office practices of a random representative sample of 19 of 51 private general pediatricians in Monroe County, New York, were studied. During winter and spring, 1966, 357 patients were interviewed in the 19 offices. Both physician and patient data were collected, analyzed, and correlated. The data obtained are compared with that in the literature. The applicability of this type of study to over-all health-manpower investigations is suggested. Proposals and plans for child health care in the future are made.

Mothers, when questioned on various aspects of the health of the family unit or on the same aspect at different time periods, tend to give meaningful but not consistent information. Evidently they apply a selective censorship on each occasion, separate the reportable data and suppress the others. This censorship is affected by the norms of medical relevance and social desirability as well as the time-related variations in actual morbidity.

A rapid, sensitive, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure was developed for the quantitative analysis of indoprofen in plasma and urine. Minimal sample preparation is required for the analysis of unconjugated urinary or plasma drug levels. The method provided quantitative results for indoprofen levels of 0.5-50 microgram/ml of plasma and 0.5-200 microgram/ml of urine and had a lower detection limit of 1 ng. Total urinary indoprofen levels required enzymatic hydrolysis of the conjugated drug prior to analysis. Results are presented for the plasma and urinary excretion levels of indoprofen for a patient receiving a single oral dose.

In the last decade hospitals have been forced to re-examine their emergency clinics because increasing numbers of patients are using such facilities. In most hospitals today the traditional concept of the emergency room, as a receiving ward for accidentally injured and critically ill patients, no longer holds. Indeed, emergency clinics in most hospitals could more properly be called dispensaries, or ambulatory clinics, dealing as they do with relatively very few cases that could not be adequately treated in the practitioner's office. Shortliffe et al.1 found an average increase of 400% in emergency room visits in the 15-year period, 1940 to 1955, in 90 United States hospitals. The Hartford Hospital saw its annual emergency room load increase from 3,000 in 1944 to just under 18,000 in 1955. Likewise, emergency room visits at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston increased from 5,500 in 1951 to 13,000 in 1959. 2 The situation appears to
