1. Incorporation of dynamic behaviour in an automated process synthesis system

Abstract: Incorporating non-economic criteria into an automated process synthesis procedure enables an engineer to prune, more easily and more effectively, the large design space early in the design process. Although existing synthesis procedures are based on the use of steady state modelling, issues such as operability and flexibility are best handled through the use of dynamic models. This paper describes a discrete programming approach, implemented in the Jacaranda synthesis tool, incorporating dynamic modelling for the generation of process designs, which meet specified criteria for operability or flexibility. Particular attention is given to implementation issues, including especially how to incorporate dynamic modelling efficiently in an automated environment. An example of the design of separation sequences with good start-up and feed disturbance behaviour is presented.

Abstract: We have used data from the OPAL detector at LEP to reconstruct D∗ mesons and secondary vertices in jets. We have studied the hemispheres of the events opposite these jets and obtain values of the hemisphere charged particle multiplicity in Z0 → uu, dd, ss, Z0 → cc and Z0 → bb events of nuds = 10.41 ± 0.06 ± 0.09 ± 0.19; nc = 10.76 ± 0.20 ± 0.14 ± 0.19; nb = 11.81 ± 0.01 ± 0.12 ± 0.21 where the first errors are statistical, the second systmatic and the third a common scale uncertainty. We find the difference in total charged particle multiplicity between c and b quark events and light (u, d, s) quark events to be δcl = 0.69 ± 0.51 ± 0.35; δbl = 2.79 ± 0.12 ± 0.27. These results are compared to the predictions of various models and QCD based calculations.

Abstract: Over 60 CVD diamond films with thicknesses in the range 2–600 μm, grown from C/H, C/H/O, C/H/Cl and C/H/N gas mixtures by microwave plasma CVD, combustion flame synthesis and r.f. plasma torch CVD, were compared in terms of their thermal, morphological, Raman and luminescence data. Correlation diagrams reveal that the content of sp2-hybridized carbon is the main factor determining the thermal properties of the films. Other parameters, e.g. thickness, crystallinity and defects, only influence the thermal performance by changing the phase purity. The presence of oxygen and nitrogen in the CVD gas phase restricts the thermal conductivity of the films to values well below the 2200 ± 200 W m−1 K−1 achieved for polycrystalline films, 250 μm thick, grown from methane and hydrogen. Diamond films with thicknesses of less than 4 μm and thermal conductivities of more than 700 W m−1 K−1 were grown from C/H and C/H/O mixtures.

Abstract: We present an update of our measurement of the τ lepton lifetime, using data taken during 1992 and 1993 with the OPAL detector at LEP. The lifetime is determined from analyses of the impact parameters of tracks from τ decays to a single charged particle, and the reconstructed decay lenghts from the τ decays to three charged particles. With the added statistics (which increase the τ pair event sample size by more than a factor of four over our 1990 and 1991 data sample), the updated lifetime measurement is: ττ = 288.8 ± 2.2 (stat) ± 1.4 (sys) fs. When combined with world-average measurements of the tau leptonic branching fractions (assuming e-μ universality), the ratio of charged-current couplings is: ( g τ g μ ) = 1.005 ± 0.007 , in agreement with the hypothesis of τ-μ charged-current universality.

Abstract: Data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP during 1990–1993 are used to measure the time dependence of B d 0 ↔ B d 0 mixing. From a sample of 153 ± 12 events with a charged D∗ and a lepton in the opposite hemisphere, we measure the B d 0 ↔ B d 0 oscillation frequency to be Δmd = 0.57±0.11(stat.)±0.02(syst.) ps−1. This corresponds to an oscillation parameter of xd = ΔmdτBd0 = 0.82±0.16(stat.) ± 0.03(syst.) ± 0.09(syst. τB0d), where the second systematic uncertainty is due to the error in the measured Bd0 lifetime.

Abstract: The branching ratios of the τ− → h− π0vτ and τ− → h− ⩾ 2π0vτ decays (where h− is either a π− or K−) are measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The two branching ratios are simultaneously measured using separate selection criteria and are found to be Bh− π0 = (26.25 ± 0.35 ± 0.52)%, Bh− ⩾ 2π0 = (9.89 ± 0.34 ± 0.55)%Bh− π0 + Bh− ⩾ 2π0 = (36.14 ± 0.33 ± 0.58)%, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: The observation and measurement of the time-dependence of B0d↔B0d mixing are described. The B0d meson is reconstructed in final states that contain a D∗− and an l+, where the b flavour of the B0d at decay time is tagged by the electric charge of the lepton. A new and efficient method, using a jet charge technique, is developed for identifying the b flavour of the produced B0d. From a sample of 556 D∗±l∓ candidates reconstructed in the OPAL data collected during 1990–1993, the B0d↔B0d oscillation frequency is measured to be Δmd = 0.508 ± 0.075 (stat) ±0.025(syst) ps−1 giving an oscillation parameter of χd = 0.73 ± 0.11 (stat) ±0.08 (syst), where 0.076 of the systematic error on χd arises from the uncertainty on the B0d lifetime.

Abstract: We report a study of forward-backward multiplicity correlations and a measurement of the dependence on charged multiplicity of the mean transverse momentum of charged hadrons, measured with respect to the thrust axis. The study was performed on a high statistics sample of Z(0) decays to multihadronic final states collected by the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. The positive forward-backward multiplicity correlation observed in our inclusive sample can be understood in terms of a superposition of distinct event topologies characterized by a different amount of hard gluon radiation (2-, 3- and 4-jet events) and with different mean multiplicities. The residual positive correlation that we see in a clean 2-jet sample can be interpreted in terms of fragmentation properties of different quark flavours and of the production and decay of resonances. We have compared the observed effects with the predictions of QCD-based parton shower models. The data are well described by the Jetset 7.3 Monte Carlo, while Herwig 5.5 does not satisfactorily reproduce the measured correlations. Hard gluon radiation is also shown to be responsible for the observed increase of about 40% in the mean transverse momentum of produced charged hadrons in the multiplicity range from 10 to 30. The comparison with the results obtained in an analysis of a sample enriched in Z(0) --> b $$($) over bar b events, shows that the presence of heavy flavours does not contribute significantly to the observed effect.

Abstract: From a data sample of approximately 240 000 hadronic Z 0 decays recorded during 1991 a sample of about 130 semileptonic B hadron decays containing a D 0 , D + or D ∗+ has been isolated. Using silicon microvertex detector information the decay vertices in these events have been reconstructed. The average B hadron lifetime of the mix of B hadrons in this event sample is measured to be 1.51 −0.14 +0.16 ±0.11 ps. From the distribution of decay times in the different samples the lifetimes of the B 0 and B + mesons are determined to be 1.51 −0.23−0.14 +0.24+0.12 ps and 1.51 −0.28−0.14 +0.30+0.12 ps, respectively. The measured ratio of the B + to B 0 lifetimes of 1.00 −0.25 +0.33 ±0.08 supports expectations that the lifetimes are similar.

Abstract: The production dynamics of baryon-antibaryon pairs are investigated using hadronic Z0 decays, recorded with the OPAL detector, which contain at least two identified Λ baryons. The rapidly difference for Λ Λ pairs shows the correlations expected from models with a chain-like production of baryon-antibaryon pairs. If the baryon number of a Λ is compensated by a Λ , the Λ is found with a probability of 53% in an interval of ±0.6 around the Λ rapidity. This correlation strength is weaker than predicted by the Herwig Monte Carlo and the Jetset Monte Carlo with a production chain of baryon-antibaryon, and stronger than predicted by the UCLA model. The observed rapidity correlations can be described by the Jetset Monte Carlo with a dominant production chain of baryon-meson-antibaryon, the popcorn mechanism. In addition to the short range correlations, one finds an indication of a correlation of Λ Λ pairs in opposite hemispheres if both the Λ and the Λ have large rapidities. Such long range correlations are expected if the primary quark flavours are compensated in opposite hemispheres and if these quarks are found in energetic baryons. Rates for simultaneous baryon and strangeness number compensation for Λ Λ , Ξ − Ξ + and Ξ − Λ ( Λ + Λ ) are measured and compared with different Monte Carlo models.

Abstract: This is the post-print version of the Article - Copyright @ 1993 Elsevier. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section for K∗(892)± production in hadronic decays of the Z0 using a sample of about half a million events recorded with the OPAL experiment at LEP. Charged K∗ mesons are reconstructed in the decay channel K0Sπ±. A mean rate of 0.72±0.02±0.08 K∗ mesons per hadronic event is found. Comparison of the results with predictions of the JETSET and HERWIG models shows that JETSET overestimates the K∗± production cross section while HERWIG is consistent with the data. Abstract: A sample of three-jet events containing a lepton with high momentum and transverse momentum is selected from hadronic decays of the Z0. The presence of the lepton indicates the semi-leptonic decay of a bottom quark and allows us, in combination with energy ordering of the jets, to distinguish between quark and gluon jets. The sign of the lepton charge is used to identify jets originating from positively and negatively charged quarks, for the jets with the lepton and for the high energy jets. Defining the jet charge by summing the charge of the particles assigned to a jet, it is observed that the mean jet charge of the quark jets is incompatible with zero and that the sign of the jet charge corresponds to that expected from the charge of the primary quark. In contrast, the mean charge of the gluon jets is consistent with zero.

Abstract: The jet chamber of the OPAL experiment at the LEP e + e − collider is designed to measure the direction and the momentum of charged particles as well as the specific energy loss in the chamber gas. The jet chamber has been operated at LEP since August 1989 and has recorded 500 000 hadronic decays of the Z 0 , resulting in a good understanding of the stability and systematics of the chamber. Resolutions obtained in the measurement of particle direction, momentum, and specific energy loss are presented, as well as the corrections and calibration procedures necessary to attain original design goals. A momentum resolution of 6.8% for particles with a momentum of 45 GeV/ c and an energy loss resolution of 3–4% over all momenta have been achieved.

Abstract: The production of the octet and decuplet baryons Λ, Ξ − , Σ (1385) ± , Ξ(1530) 0 and Ω − and the corresponding antibaryons has been measured in a sample of 485 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. Results on differential and integrated cross sections are presented. The differential cross section of Λ baryons is found to be softer than the one predicted by the Jetset and Herwig Monte Carlo generators. The measured decuplet yields are found to disagree with the simple diquark picture where only one tuning parameter for spin 1 diquarks is used. Comparisons of the momentum spectra for Λ and Ξ − with the predictions of an analytical QCD formula are also presented.

Abstract: In this report we describe the construction and performance of the laser system which was used in Summer 1989 for the initial calibration of the OPAL jet chamber after installation on the LEP beam axis and which has served as a monitoring tool since then. Two Nd: YAG lasers are used to generate 48 high precision double beams which enter the chamber at fixed positions. The main features of the roughly 450 optical components are described and the beam alignment procedures are explained. Results are given for jet chamber calibration constants such as drift velocity, Lorentz angle, and residual sagittas.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of two-particle momentum correlations in hadronic decays of the Z 0 at LEP. These data are compared with recent analytic QCD calculations based on the summation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms, and with QCD Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the analytic calculations show the same general features as the data, but that the overall level of the correlations is not reproduced, suggesting that higher order or hadronization effects are significant. This contrasts with the success of similar QCD calculations in describing single-particle momentum distributions. QCD Monte Carlo models are found to give a reasonable level of correlation, with parton shower models incorporating string hadronization giving the best description of the data.

Abstract: We observe evidence for the production of b-flavoured baryons in decays of the Z 0 boson with the OPAL detector at LEP. We find 68 Λl − , Λ l + candidates in 458 583 hadronic Z 0 decays. We interpret this as a signal of 55 ± 9 +0.3 −3.1 events from the semi-leptonic decays of b baryons. Assuming weakly decaying b baryons produced in Z 0 decays are mostly Λ b particles, we measure the product branching ratio (Γ b b /Γ had ) f ( b →Λ b ) B (Λ b →Λl − v X ) , averaged over the electron and muon channels, to be (6.2±1.0±1.5)×10 −4 .

Abstract: Using a sample of 5558 Z 0 → τ + τ − decays produced at LEP a direct test of CP -invariance in the neutral current reaction e + e − → τ + τ − is performed. Samples of events where eachy τ decays into a single particle have been isolated for the construction of CP -odd observables. Three different event classes are considered: lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron, and hadron-hadron. No evidence for a non-zero expectation value of the considered CP -observables and hence for CP -violation is observed. Quantitatively, we deduce from this null result an estimate on the weak dipole moment d τ (m 2 Z = (−4.5 ± 5.3 ± 1.4) × 10 −17 e cm for the lepton-lepton signature and d τ (m 2 Z = (1.4 ± 3.7 ± 1.3) × 10 −17 e cm for the hadron-hadron signature. Combining these results we place a limit with 95% confidence of | d τ |⩽7.0 × 10 −17 e cm.

Abstract: From a sample of approximately 135 000 hadronic Z0 decays recorded with the OPAL detector, 1 536 events were selected with two lepton candidates, either electrons or muons. A signal for B0 B 0 mixing was observed using the sign of the lepton charge to tag the charge of the b quark in decaying b-flavoured hadrons. A flavour discriminating variable was constructed from the lepton momentum and its component perpendicular to the jet axis. By fitting the fraction of events in which the two lepton charges are of the same sign, as a function of this variable, the average mixing parameter was measured to be χ = 0.145+0.041-0.035 ± 0.018, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: We report on an improved measurement of the value of the strong coupling constant σs at the Z0 peak, using the asymmetry of the energy-energy correlation function. The analysis, based on second-order perturbation theory and a data sample of about 145000 multihadronic Z0 decays, yields αs(Mz0 = 0.118±0.001(stat.)±0.003(exp.syst.)−0.004+0.0009 (theor. syst.), where the theoretical systematic error accounts for uncertainties due to hadronization, the choice of the renormalization scale and unknown higher-order terms. We adjust the parameters of a second-order matrix element Monte Carlo followed by string hadronization to best describe the energy correlation and other hadronic Z0 decay data. The αs result obtained from this second-order Monte Carlo is found to be unreliable if values of the renormalization scale smaller than about 0.15 Ecm are used in the generator.

Abstract: From a sample of 3308 e + e − → τ + τ − events with an estimated background of 1.9%, we find 964 τ → e ν ν , 903 τ → μν ν , and 309 τ → π( K )ν candidates. Efficiency and background estimates determined from both Monte Carlo and control sample studies yield the following branching ratios: B(τ → e ν ν ) = 17.4 ± 0.5 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( sys )% , B(τ → μν ν ) = 16.8 ± 0.5 ± 0.4%, and B(τ → π( K )ν) = 12.1 ± 0.7 ± 0.5% . These values are in good agreement with previous measurements. The measured lepton branching ratios, when combined with the world-average measured value for the τ lifetime, yield a ratio of the τ Fermi coupling constant to that of the lighter leptons given by G τ / G e, μ = 0.92 ± 0.04, where it is assumed G e = G μ ≡ G e , μ . The average τ polarization at the Z° resonance is measured to be −0.01±0.09 from an analysis of the momentum spectra of the electron, muon, and pion candidates, implying that the ratio of vector to axial vector couplings of the τ to the Z° is ν τ / α τ = 0.01 ± 0.04. The measurements of the average polarizations in the forward and backward hemispheres lead to the efficiency-corrected, forward-backward polarization asymmetry A FB pol = −0.22 ± 0.10, implying for the electron couplings to the Z° the ratio ν e / α e = 0.15±0.07. Since these values for the tau and electron couplings are consistent with one another, we assume lepton universality to derive ν / α = 0.05 ± 0.04 and a value for the weak mixing angle of sin 2 θ W = 0.237 ± 0.009 , with no ambiguity introduced by the relative signs of ν and α.

Abstract: A search for scalar leptoquarks has been performed with data from the OPAL detector at the e+e− storage ring LEP. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.3 pb−1 no evidence for leptoquark production was observed where the leptoquark decays into a quark and either a charged lepton (e, μ, τ) or a neutrino. An upper limit of 1.7 pb on the production cross section for leptoquarks is obtainedassuming a branching ratio of 50% for the decay of the leptoquark into the channels with a charged lepton. Lower limits on the leptoquark mass between 41.4 and 46.4 GeV/c2 at 95% CL are obtained, depending on the effecte SU(2) × U(1) invariant couplings assigned to the leptoquark.

Abstract: In this paper an investigation of the production of D ∗ ± mesons produced in e + e − collisions at energies around the Z 0 pole is presented. Based on 115 D ∗ ± mesons with x D∗  2E D ∗ /E cm > 0.2 the properties of D ∗ mesons produced in the reaction Z 0 → c c are studied. Fixing the yield and the fragmentation function of bottom quarks to the values obtained at LEP using lepton tags, and average energy fraction of the D ∗ ± mesons from primary charmed quarks of 〈x c → D ∗ 〉 = 0.52 ± 0.03 +- 0.01 is found and Γ z 0 →c c = (323 ± 61 ± 35) MeV is determined. The first error is the combined statistical and systematic error from this experiment, and the second the total error from other sources.

Abstract: From an analysis of multi-hadron events from Z 0 decays, values of the strong coupling constant α s ( M 2 Z 0 )=0.131±0.006 (exp)±0.002(theor.) and α s ( M z 0 2 ) = −0.009 +0.007 (exp.) −0.002 +0.006 (theor.) are derived from the energy-energy correlation distribution and its asymmetry, respectively, assuming the QCD renormalization scale μ = M Z 0 . The theoretical error accounts for differences between O ( α 2 s ) calculations. A two parameter fit Λ MS and the renormalization scale μ leads to Λ MS =216±85 MeV and μ 2 s =0.027±0.013 or to α s ( M 2 Z 0 )=0.117 +0.006 −0.008 (exp.) for the energy-energy correlation distribution. The energy-energy correlation asymmetry distribution is insensitive to a scale change: thus the α s value quoted above for this variable includes the theoretical uncertainty associated with the renormalization scale.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the processes e+e−→e+e−, e+e−→μ+μ−, and e+e−→τ+τ− near the Z0 pole. On the basis of 163 e+e−, 101 μ+μ− and 87 τ+τ− events we obtain Γee=89±4±4 MeV, Γμμ=85±9±6 MeV and Γττ=87±10±8 MeV, compatible with the standard model. Combining these with our previous results on hadronic Z0 decays, we find a hadronic width Γhad=1787±81±90 MeV and an invisible width Γinv=552±85±71 MeV.

Abstract: The supersymmetric partner of the muon was searched for in a systematic way. No candidate was found and 95% CL limits on its mass were given for different cases. If it is stable, the limit is 20.9 GeV c 2 . If it decays into a muon and an invisible low-mass particle, the limit is 20.3 GeV c 2 . If it decays into a muon and an unstable neutral particle which decays further into a photon and an invisible massless particle, the limit is 19.2 GeV c 2 .

Abstract: The production and decay of τ-pairs was studied with the JADE detector at PETRA at center-of-mass energies of 30 ⩽√s ⩽ 46.78 GeV. The total production cross section for τ-pairs agreed with QED predictions to order α3. Lower limits on QED cut-off parameters of Λ+ > 285 GeV and Λ− > 210 GeV at 95% confidence level were ontained. The decay branching fractions into one and three charged particles were determined to be (86.1 ± 0.5 ± 0.9)% and (13.6±0.5 ±0.80)%. In the angular distributions a forward-backward asymmetry was observed, from which the axial-vector weak charge to the τ was determined to be aτ = −0.74 ± 0.22 in agreement with the standard model. An analysis of the process e+e− → τ+τ−γ showed agreement with QED calculations to O(α3).

Abstract: Total and differential cross sections for exclusive production of proton-antiproton pairs in photon-photon collisions have been measured using the JADE detector at PETRA. The total cross section in the CM angular |cos θ∗| < 0.6 reaches a maximum value of 3.8 nb for a γγ invariant mass of Wγγ = 2.25 GeV, and decreases rapidly for higher values of Wγγ. In the range 2.0 GeV < Wγγ < 2.6 GeV the angular distribution is not isotopic. The nucleons are preferentially emitted at large angles to the collision axis.

Abstract: D∗0 mesons, produced in e+e− annihilations, are observed in the γD0 and π0D0 decay modes, where the D0 subsequently decays into K−π+. The production cross section and the xE distribution for D∗0 mesons are extracted from the data, and compared with corresponding measurements for D∗+ mesons. The branching ratio for the D∗0 radiative decay is measured to be 0.53 ± 0.13. An upper limit for the σ · BR of the F∗+ meson, where the associated F+ decays into φπ+, is also derived.

Abstract: Pure barium and strontium titanate as well as donor (La)- and acceptor (Mn, Fe, Cr)-doped materials were investigated as both ceramics and single crystals. Alternating current and direct current methods using reversible and polarization cells, as well as concentration cells, were applied. The electronic and ionic conductivities, the dielectric constant, and the phase boundary parameters were measured as functions of temperature (700°C) and of oxygen partial pressure (10 1 –10 5 Pa). An ionic contribution via internal surfaces was found in BaTiO 3 samples. The effective diffusion coefficients of ceramic (10 −8 cm 2 sec −1 at 600–650°C) and single crystalline (10 −9 cm 2 sec −1 at 630–660°C) BaTiO 3 were determined. The formulae presented allow the evaluation of the experiments even for the case of defects with variable charges.

Abstract: A search was performed for the associated production of two different Higgs bosons via a virtual Z 0 in e + e − annihilation (e + e − → h 1 0 h 2 0 ) using the JADE detector at PETRA. This was motivated by the interpretation of the monojet events observed at the CERN p p collider as anomalous Z 0 decays into two neutral Higgs bosons (h 1 0 and h 2 0 ), where h 1 0 is stable and escapes detection while h 2 0 decays into hadrons. Single- or di-jet events with large momentum imbalance are then expected at PETRA energies. No evidence for such events was found in our data; this excludes h 2 0 masses in the range of 1 to 21 GeV with 95% CL, if the branching fraction for Z 0 → h 1 0 h 2 0 is a larger than one half that for Z 0 → v μ v μ . The possibility that the monojets could originate from supersymmetric higgsino production from Z 0 decay is also examined.

Abstract: A search for the supersymmetric partners of the electron was made assuming different photino masses. If both types of scalar electrons have an equal mass and the photino is massless, then the lower limit of the scalar electron mass was found to be 25.2 GeV c 2 , whereas, if the scalar electrons have different masses, the lower limit is 21.8 GeV c 2 .

Abstract: The energy dependence of the relative production rate of three-jet events is studied in hadronic e+e− annihilation events at center of mass energies between 22 and 46.7 GeV. Three-jet events are defined by a jet finding algorithm which is closely related to the definition of resolvable jets used in O(αs2) perturbative QCD calculations, where the relative production rate of three-jet events is roughly proportional to the size of the strong coupling strength. The production rates of three-jet events in the data decrease significantly with increasing centre of mass energy. The experimental rates, which are independent of fragmentation model calculations, can be directly compared to theoretically calculated jet production rates and are in good agreement with the QCD expectations of a running coupling strength. The hypothesis of an energy independent coupling constant can be excluded with a significance of four standard derivations.

Abstract: The total cross section and the inclusive muon cross section for the process e+e−→ hadrons have been measured in the center of mass energy range between 39.79 and 46.78 GeV. The ratio R shows no significant structure. It has an average value of 4.13±0.08±0.14. An upper limit is set on the production of narrow resonances. Limits are obtained for pair-produced heavy quarks. The data are compared with the standard electroweak interaction model including QCD corrections taking into account the five known types of quarks. Upper limits are given for a possible structure of quarks and for effects of color octet leptons.
