With increasing demands for living organ donations, understanding the prevalence of depression and anxiety, which are the commonest psychiatric disorders in donors following organ transplantation, will serve to improve psychiatric care to safeguard donors' mental wellbeing. This descriptive systematic review examines all observational studies in English investigating prevalence of depression and anxiety in adult transplant donors using bibliographic databases. Sixty-two papers were included (kidney, n = 25; liver, n = 25; bone marrow, n = 7; uterus, n = 2; lung, n = 1; kidney and lung concurrently, n = 2). Post-transplantation depression and anxiety prevalence rates (Depression: 0–46.9%, Anxiety: 0–66.7%) did not differ significantly from pre-transplantation and were largely comparable to the general population. Other psychiatric disorders observed included bipolar disorder, conversion disorder, adjustment disorder and sleep disorder. Other psychological outcomes observed included lower quality of life, lower satisfaction of life and regret after donation. Pre-donation risk factors such as poor physical/psychological health status, and post-donation risk factors such as complicated post-surgical recovery and poor physical/psychological health in recipients were identified, predisposing donors to poor psychological outcomes. Individuals with risk factors should be monitored and provided with social support, psychoeducation, psychotherapy and long-term follow up. Future studies should adopt consistent methodological approaches to improve comparability between various studies. More research investigating poor psychological outcomes in other organ donors besides kidney and liver donors, donors who have past psychiatric history, unrelated and parent donors is warranted.

The center of pressure (COP) position reflects a combination of proprioceptive, motor and mechanical function. As such, it can be used to quantify and characterize neurologic dysfunction. The aim of this study was to describe and quantify the movement of COP and its variability in healthy chondrodystrophoid dogs while walking to provide a baseline for comparison to dogs with spinal cord injury due to acute intervertebral disc herniations. Fifteen healthy adult chondrodystrophoid dogs were walked on an instrumented treadmill that recorded the location of each dog’s COP as it walked. Center of pressure (COP) was referenced from an anatomical marker on the dogs’ back. The root mean squared (RMS) values of changes in COP location in the sagittal (y) and horizontal (x) directions were calculated to determine the range of COP variability. Three dogs would not walk on the treadmill. One dog was too small to collect interpretable data. From the remaining 11 dogs, 206 trials were analyzed. Mean RMS for change in COPx per trial was 0.0138 (standard deviation, SD 0.0047) and for COPy was 0.0185 (SD 0.0071). Walking speed but not limb length had a significant effect on COP RMS. Repeat measurements in six dogs had high test retest consistency in the x and fair consistency in the y direction. In conclusion, COP variability can be measured consistently in dogs, and a range of COP variability for normal chondrodystrophoid dogs has been determined to provide a baseline for future studies on dogs with spinal cord injury.

In most of literatures of age replacement policy, failures before planned replacement age can be either minimally repaired or perfectly repaired based on the types of failures, cost for repairs and so on. In this paper, we propose age replacement policy based on imperfect repair with random probability. The proposed policy incorporates the case that such intermittent failure can be either minimally repaired or perfectly repaired with random probabilities. The mathematical formulas of the expected cost rate per unit time are derived for both the infinite-horizon case and the one-replacement-cycle case. For each case, we show that the optimal replacement age exists and is finite.

Two different internal-type linear inductive antenna arrangements, that is, parallel and anti-parallel antenna arrangements having different current directions between adjacent antennas were investigated for a large area plasma source having the size of 1020mmx830mm. The electric field profile and plasma density of Ar calculated by the F2L code showed consistent results with the experimental results on the plasma density and processing results. The results showed that the anti-parallel antenna arrangement showed better plasma uniformity compared to the parallel antenna arrangement due to the destructive E"z-field between adjacent antennas even though the destructive E"z-field decreases the plasma density at the center of the chamber.

Young′s moduli of various epoxy coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) micro-cantilevers were determined from the deflection results obtained using the phase-shift shadow moire (PSSM) method. The filler materials for epoxy coatings were aluminum and graphite powders that were mixed with epoxy at various percentages. Young′s moduli were calculated from theory based on the deflection results. The PET micro-cantilever coated with aluminum-epoxy coating showed increasing value of Young′s modulus when the ratios of the aluminum-epoxy were increased. The graphite-epoxy coating on the PET micro-cantilever also showed the same trend. The experimental results also show that Young′s modulus of the graphite-epoxy coating is higher than aluminum-epoxy coating in comparison at the same mixing ratio.

In order to investigate the compatibility as a power utility facility, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) had installed a 22.9 kV, 1250 A, 100 m long high temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable system. Using the HTS cable, various tests have been performed to investigate electrical and thermo-mechanical properties. Since 2005, a series of thermal cycle tests between liquid nitrogen (LN 2 ) and ambient temperatures have been conducted using a vacuum-pump driven open-loop cryogenic system with a capacity of 3 kW. In the tests, although the open-loop cryogenic system was reliable to operate the HTS cable system, it was not effective in economic view point because LN 2 consumption was larger than expected. In order to secure against unexpected emergencies and solve the problem of LN 2 consumption, a hybrid cryogenic system was designed and installed. A stirling cryocooler was employed and combined with the open-loop cryogenic system. Considering the average heat load at rated condition, the cooling capacity of the cryocooler was determined to 4 kW at 77 K. In this paper, results of performance tests and the design of the hybrid cooling system are presented.

In Korea, two long-term field demonstrations for high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable have been carried out for several years; Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and LS Cable Ltd. (LSC) independently. Encouraged at the result of the projects performed in parallel, a new project targeting the real grid operation was launched in the fourth quarter of 2008 with the Korean government’s financial support. KEPCO and LSC are jointly collaborating in the selection of substation, determination of cable specification, design of cryogenic system, and the scheme of protection coordination. A three phase 500 m long HTS cable at a distribution level voltage of 22.9 kV is to be built at 154/22.9 kV Icheon substation located in near Seoul. A hybrid cryogenic system reflecting the contingency plan is being designed including cryocoolers. The HTS cable system will be installed in the second quarter of 2010, being commissioned by the fall of 2010. This paper describes the objectives of the project and design issues of the cable and cryogenic system in detail.

The synthesis of new 1β-methylcarbapenems 1a – d bearing aminopyrimidinylthioether moiety at C-5 position of pyrrolidine ring and their antibacterial activities are described. All the compounds exhibited potent antibacterial activity. Of these carbapenems, 1d showed the best combination of antibacterial activity and stability to dehydropeptidase-I (DHP-I).

This paper describes the application of the shadow moire method for direct measurement of the whole-field deformation of a cantilever beam, made from natural fiber-reinforced composite (NRFC) material, under static loading and comparison of the experimental results with those predicted using finite element analysis (FEA). The material properties required in the FEA were obtained by calculating the mean of the property values determined from three-point bending tests on several standard test specimens made from the material. The classical phase-shift technique was used in the shadow moire method to increase the measurement resolution. The comparison shows the existence of a non-zero gradient at the base of the cantilever in the measured deformation profiles probably due to the clamping conditions of the cantilever. However, the difference in deformation at the free edge is only 0.4 mm over a length of 160 mm.

Chemically ordered FePt binary alloys with L 1 0 face-centered tetragonal (fct) structure have recently attracted considerable attention due to their excellent intrinsic magnetic chemical and mechanical properties. In particular, one-dimensional (1-D) arrays of FePt alloys are prospective materials for ultrahigh density magnetic storage media. We describe a new method to fabricate FePt alloy nanostructures embedded in the nanochannels of anodic alumina templates (AAT) and SBA15 silica through infiltrating porous membranes with FePt nanoparticles. SBA15 silica nanotube is a honeycomb structure with tubular channels of 9 nm in diameter, extending through 10 μ m long particles. In contrast AAT have morphology of a membrane with regular array of pores 60 nm in diameter. To transform the FePt alloy phase from chemically disordered face-centered-cubic to chemically ordered L 1 0 phase the membrane was annealed at 700 ∘ C in a H 2 – N 2 gas mixture for 2 h. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) show that nanoparticles transformed into isolated superparamagnetic nanoparticles in SBA15 and elongated nanostructure in AAT due to the annealing treatment. The magnetization was measured by quantum interference device (SQUID). The ordered fct FePt polycrystalline nanostructure in AAT have high magnetic anisotropy and thus large coercivity up to 1.1 T at room temperature.

Our previous study showed that the oral administration of red ginseng powder before but not after transient forebrain ischemia prevented delayed neuronal death in gerbils, and that a neuroprotective molecule within red ginseng powder was ginsenoside Rb1. However, it remains to be clarified whether or not ginsenoside Rb1 acts directly on the ischemic brain, and the mechanism by which ginsenoside Rb1 protects the ischemic CA1 neurons is not determined. Without elucidation of the pharmacological property of ginsenoside Rb1, the drug would not be accepted as a neuroprotective agent. The present study demonstrated that the intracerebroventricular infusion of ginsenoside Rb1 after 3.5 min or 3 min forebrain ischemia, precluded significantly the ischemia-induced shortening of response latency in a step-down passive avoidance task and rescued a significant number of hippocampal CA1 neurons from lethal ischemic damage. The intracerebroventricular infusion of ginsenoside Rb1 did not affect hippocampal blood flow or hippocampal temperature except that it caused a slight increase in hippocampal blood flow at 5 min after transient forebrain ischemia. Furthermore, ginsenoside Rb1 at concentrations of 0.1-100 fg/ml (0.09-90 fM) rescued hippocampal neurons from lethal damage caused by the hydroxyl radical-promoting agent FeSO4 in vitro, and the Fenton reaction system containing p-nitrosodimethylaniline confirmed the hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity of ginsenoside Rb1. These findings suggest that the central infusion of ginsenoside Rb1 after forebrain ischemia protects hippocampal CA1 neurons against lethal ischemic damage possibly by scavenging free radicals which are overproduced in situ after brain ischemia and reperfusion. The present study may validate the empirical usage of ginseng root over thousands of years for the prevention of cerebrovascular diseases.
