International audience; Baby-led weaning (BLW), proposed as a new form of complementary feeding, has emerged as a real trend phenomenon in the media. Infants are seated at the family table from the age of 6 months, facing the foods they grab and bring to their mouth: they decide which foods they want to eat and what amount. The consumption of mashed foods and the use of a spoon are totally discouraged. BLW is increasingly used in nurseries and centers of young children. A bibliographic search carried out between 2000 and 2021 found 423 articles, of which 38 were selected. The clinical studies selected are 11 cross-sectional observational studies and two randomized controlled studies. BLW promotes breastfeeding, the early introduction of morsels, the respect of the child's appetite, the use of unprocessed foods, and the choice of "homemade" and friendliness. These benefits can nonetheless be reached with usual complementary feeding (SCF), according to current recommendations. Other benefits are claimed without scientific evidence such as easier achievement of dietary complementary feeding and an optimal growth with prevention of excess weight gain. BLW has some obvious downsides. The infant may not get enough energy, iron, zinc, vitamins, and other nutrients, or too much protein, saturated fat, salt, or sugar. The risk of choking, which must be distinguished from the physiological gagging reflex, has not been ruled out by scientific studies. Currently, the Nutrition Committee of the French Pediatric Society considers that the data published to date in terms of benefits and risks of BLW do not lend themselves to advice for this practice in preference over SCF carried out according to current recommendations.

Baby-led-weaning (BLW) is a novel model of complementary feeding. Although there is little scientific evidence to support the suitability or superiority of this complementary feeding model, BLW is followed by many families today. The aim was to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of a group of parents and health professionals regarding BLW in Spain.This research was designed as a cross-sectional study in a sample of 502 parents and 364 health professionals. Two questionnaires generated and disseminated through Google forms were used. The differences between groups of professionals were analyzed using the Chi-Square test.92.3% of professionals and 93.4% of parents knew about BLW. They recommend BLW "always" in 39.8% and 69.3% of the cases, and "sometimes" in 49.7% and 24.9%, respectively. Of the health professionals, 80.5% recommended starting complementary feeding as of six months, 36% of them using BLW, 24% followed traditional weaning, 3.3% bottle feeding and the remaining 36% did not indicate. Eighty-three percent recommended chewing as soon as the child showed interest.Both health professionals and parents recommend BLW and consider it helps promote the developmental milestones of the baby. Providing nurses with an adequate number of resources to guide parents on complementary feeding will continue to improve childcare.

Background Current WHO's recommendation for optimal infant feeding advises exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months. After this initial period, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary food starting from the age of 6 months with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond. Purpose This study examined the timing and types of fluids and foods first introduced in a representative sample of toddlers (n = 1051) from 79 daycares across Lebanon. Questionnaires were self-administered to parents of toddlers (12–36 months) with a participation rate of 67%. Results Results showed that more than half of toddlers (55.7%) were introduced to infant formula within their first month of life. Around two-thirds received water as the first type of additional fluid (62.5%) with a mean age of 3.86 ± 2.15 months and fruits or cooked vegetables (69.7%) as the first types of food introduced with a mean age of 5.73 ± 1.56 months. Unfortunately, two-third (67.3%) were not breastfed after solid food introduction. Practice implications Our data on current suboptimal feeding practices in Lebanon shows the need to reinforce BF and CF practices recommendations and guidelines at the community, social and health system levels. Conclusions In the absence of specific recommendations and with the poor involvement of the various stakeholders, it was noted that more than half of the parents were not following the WHO recommendation concerning unnecessary fluid supplementation of infants and were introducing food before the recommended age of 6 months; moreover, only a minority of mothers continued breastfeeding after introducing food to their infants.

Background The link between high protein intake during infancy and obesity later in childhood has been much debated, and the association with differing protein sources remains unclear. Objective This study aimed to examine the associations between total protein intake and protein from different sources (ie, nondairy animal, dairy, and plant) reported at age 9 months and development in body mass index (BMI) z scores until age 5 years. Design This study involved a secondary data analysis of the Melbourne InFANT (Infant Feeding, Activity and Nutrition Trial) program, an observational prospective cohort study that was conducted from 2008 to 2013. Participants/setting Participants were children (n = 345) who completed both the 9-month and 5-year follow-up visits within the Melbourne InFANT program. Main outcome measures BMI z score was measured at age 5 years. Statistical analyses performed Linear mixed models with a random effect for clusters of mother’s group and with adjustment for baseline child and maternal covariates were conducted. Results With adjustment for covariates, every 1 g or 1% energy increase in total protein intake at age 9 months was associated with a 0.016-unit (95% CI 0.003 to 0.029) or 0.034-unit (95% CI 0.005 to 0.063) increase in BMI z score at age 5 years, respectively. With respect to protein sources, associations of similar magnitude were found for nondairy animal protein. No evidence of an association with BMI z score was found for dairy (including milk, yogurt, cheese, breast milk, and infant formula) and plant proteins. Conclusions High intakes of total protein, nondairy animal protein, but not dairy or plant proteins, during infancy were associated with higher BMI z score in early childhood. These findings can inform dietary recommendations regarding protein intakes during infancy. Background Type of infant feeding has been linked to later nutritional outcomes, including dietary diversity and obesity in childhood. Little is known about how introduction to complementary feeding and diet quality in early childhood vary by infant feeding type and sex. Objective Our objective was to investigate whether early childhood dietary patterns vary by infant feeding type and sex. Methods Data from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Infants and Toddler Feeding Practices Study 2 (ITFPS-2) was used, including children with complete information on the WIC infant food package received at ages 1, 7, and 11 mo (N = 2839). Based on this information, children were grouped as fully breastfed, mostly breastfed, mostly formula fed, and fully formula fed. Outcomes include introduction of complementary foods; caloric intake aged between 1 and 36 mo; and Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 between 13 and 36 mo. Mixed models were used adjusting for child's, mother's, and family's sociodemographic characteristics. Results Across all infant feeding groups, the mean age of introduction to any solids was before the age of 6 mo; fully breastfed children were introduced to complementary foods closer to the recommended age (mean 5.1-5.2 mo) compared with other feeding groups (mean 4.6-4.8 mo). Fully formula fed infants consumed significantly more energy than fully breastfed infants at ages 1 mo (boys = 55 kcal/d, girls = 47 kcal/d), 12 mo (boys = 68 kcal/d, girls = 59 kcal/d), 24 mo (boys = 81 kcal/d, girls = 71 kcal/d), and 36 mo (boys = 95 kcal/d, girls = 83 kcal/d). No meaningful differences were observed for HEI-2015 between infant feeding groups or child sex, with average scores of HEI-2015 for all children being 61-63 out of 100. Conclusion Early childhood dietary patterns were slightly better among children who were fully breastfed as infants, compared with children in other infant feeding groups. The diets of all WIC-participating children could be improved.

Objective: The study explored determinant factors of weight status among children aged 12–24 months who received complementary feeding program of the Ministry of Health in Luwu Timur, South Sulawesi Province. Methods: The study used case–control design. It involved 82 children from poor families who received complementary feeding program. Forty-one children as a case group with constant body weight and forty-one children as a control group with increasing body weight within the last two months selected with a purposive sampling technique. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding (OR = 3.485; 95% CI = 1.380–8.798), the duration of complementary feeding consumption (OR = 0.299; 95% CI = 0.095–0.939), history of diarrhea (OR = 3.071; 95% CI = 1.174–8.028) and milk consumption pattern (OR = 0.233; 95% CI = 0.069–0.791) were significant determinant of body weight status. Exclusive breastfeeding was the most dominant variable for body weight status (B = 6.152). Conclusions: Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is crucial to support complementary feeding programs in increasing the body weight status of children aged 12–24 months.

A streamlined analytical workflow was developed for the analysis of infant drink samples using a miniature mass spectrometry system preceded by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and extraction nano-electrospray ionization. Potential chemical contaminants in infant drinks (milk, lactic acid bacteria beverage, and fruit juice) were extracted and enriched using a custom-made stainless-steel SPME probe, which was coated with a thin layer of polyaniline and multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposites (PANI/MWCNTs) by electrochemical deposition. The resulting porous microstructure has a larger surface area and enhanced microextraction efficiency, with enrichment factors ranging from 3055 to 8695 for exemplary analytes of antibiotics, bisphenol A, and perfluorinated compounds. The enriched analytes on the electrochemically fabricated SPME probe were simultaneously desorbed and ionized within a pulled glass capillary by extraction nano-electrospray ionization. The ionized species were subjected to instrumental analysis on a miniature ion trap mass spectrometer with adequate tandem mass spectrometry capability. The developed method was optimized and validated in terms of sensitivity, linearity, repeatability, and recovery. The integrated experimental protocol combining SPME, ambient ionization, and miniature mass spectrometry is promising for rapid, on-site screening of hazardous substances in food to ensure consumer health.

Background Limited information is available on added sugars consumption in US infants and toddlers. Objectives To present national estimates of added sugars intake among US infants and toddlers by sociodemographic characteristics, to identify top sources of added sugars, and to examine trends in added sugars intake. Design Cross-sectional analysis of 1 day of 24-hour dietary recall data. Participants/setting A nationally representative sample of US infants aged 0 to 11 months and toddlers aged 12 to 23 months (n=1,211) during the period from 2011 through 2016 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Trends were assessed from 2005-2006 through 2015-2016 (n=2,795). Main outcome measures Among infants and toddlers, the proportion consuming any added sugars, the average amount of added sugars consumed, percent of total energy from added sugars, and top sources of added sugars intake. Statistical analysis Paired t tests were used to compare differences by age, sex, race/Hispanic origin, family income level, and head of household education level. Trends were tested using orthogonal polynomials. Significance was set at P Results During 2011 to 2016, 84.4% of infants and toddlers consumed added sugars on a given day. A greater proportion of toddlers (98.3%) consumed added sugars than infants (60.6%). The mean amount of added sugars toddlers consumed was also more compared with infants (5.8 vs 0.9 tsp). Non-Hispanic black toddlers (8.2 tsp) consumed more added sugars than non-Hispanic Asian (3.7 tsp), non-Hispanic white (5.3 tsp), and Hispanic (5.9 tsp) toddlers. A similar pattern was observed for percent energy from added sugars. For infants, top sources of added sugars were yogurt, baby food snacks/sweets, and sweet bakery products; top sources among toddlers were fruit drinks, sugars/sweets, and sweet bakery products. The mean amount of added sugars decreased from 2005-2006 through 2015-2016 for both age groups; however, percent energy from added sugars only decreased among infants. Conclusion Added sugars intake was observed among infants/toddlers and varied by age and race and Hispanic origin. Added sugars intake, as a percent of energy, decreased only among infants from 2005 to 2016.

The present study reports infants' exposure to fourteen perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in infant formula and baby food. First infant milk, follow-on milk and three types of baby food were analyzed: a variety made of fruits and vegetables, a variety with added fish and one containing meat. The mean lower-bound (LB) concentration of ∑14 PFASs was 0.22 μg/kg wet weight (w.w.) in first infant milk and 0.24 μg/kg w. w. In follow-on milk. Lower levels were noticed in baby food, where the mean LB concentration of ∑14 PFASs was in a 0.019-0.025 μg/kg w. w. Range. Perfluorotetradecanoic acid was found to be in the highest concentration both in baby formula and baby food. Dietary intake of ∑14 PFASs (LB concentration) via infant formula was in 0.3-83.1 ng/kg body weight (b.w.) and 0.3-31.1 ng/kg b. w ranges for first infant milk and follow-on milk respectively. The mean dietary intakes of ∑14 PFASs via one serving of baby food were similar for three varieties and were in a 0.46-0.57 ng/kg b. w. Range. Dietary intake of ∑4 PFASs was negligible in regard to the tolerable weekly intake of 4.4 ng/kg b. w. Recently established by the European Food Safety Authority. This preliminary study brings new information on infant exposure to PFASs in Poland. It is suggested that more sensitive methods be used in the future, and since there are many types of infant foods with different compositions of ingredients, more studies should be conducted.

Furan has been described as a carcinogen, being present in numerous food products available to the everyday consumer. The objectives of this study were to determine the formation of furan and its derivatives in 3 model systems during heating, with their contents being determined in selected commercial food products by HS-SPME Arrow coupled with GC/MS/MS. A high accuracy and precision was attained for the method developed in this study. The model system of 0.5 M glucose/alanine + 0.1 M ascorbic acid generated the highest furan level (5603.63 ng/g) when heated at 121 °C for 2 h. The addition of ascorbic acid favored formation of furfural and furfuryl alcohol, while linoleic acid favored formation of furfuryl alcohol. In addition, the total furan contents in various commercial foods ranged from 21.14 to 3183.39 ng/g. Most importantly, the outcome of model systems may be used to predict the presence of furan and its derivatives in commercial foods.

Background Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is thought to increase the risk of micronutrient deficiencies, but few studies adjust for dietary intakes and systemic inflammation. Objective We tested whether EED is associated with micronutrient deficiency risk independent of diet and systemic inflammation, and whether it mediates the relation between intake and micronutrient status. Methods Using data from 1283 children in the MAL-ED (Etiology, Risk Factors, and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health) birth cohort we evaluated the risk of anemia, low retinol, zinc, and ferritin, and high transferrin receptor (TfR) at 15 mo. We characterized gut inflammation and permeability by myeloperoxidase (MPO), neopterin (NEO), and α-1-antitrypsin (AAT) concentrations from asymptomatic fecal samples averaged from 9 to 15 mo, and averaged the lactulose:mannitol ratio z-score (LMZ) at 9 and 15 mo. Nutrient intakes from complementary foods were quantified monthly from 9 to 15 mo and densities were averaged for analyses. α-1-Acid glycoprotein at 15 mo characterized systemic inflammation. Relations between variables were modeled using a Bayesian network. Results A greater risk of anemia was associated with LMZ [1.15 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.31)] and MPO [1.16 (1.01, 1.34)]. A greater risk of low ferritin was associated with AAT [1.19 (1.03, 1.37)] and NEO [1.22 (1.04, 1.44)]. A greater risk of low retinol was associated with LMZ [1.24 (1.08, 1.45)]. However, MPO was associated with a lower risk of high transferrin receptor [0.86 (0.74, 0.98)], NEO with a lower risk of low retinol [0.75 (0.62, 0.89)], and AAT with a lower risk of low plasma zinc [0.83 (0.70, 0.99)]. Greater nutrient intake densities (vitamins A and B6, calcium, protein, and zinc) were negatively associated with EED. Inverse associations between nutrient densities and micronutrient deficiency largely disappeared after adjustment for EED, suggesting that EED mediates these associations. Conclusions EED is independently associated with an increased risk of low ferritin, low retinol, and anemia. Greater nutrient density from complementary foods may reduce EED, and the control of micronutrient deficiencies may require control of EED.

Arsenic and its inorganic species: As (III), As (V), dimethylarsenic acid (DMA) and monomethylarsenic acid (MMA) were determined in hypoallergenic formulas and grain porridges commercially available on Polish market, dedicated for infant 0–8 months. After quantitative extraction with 0.5% HNO3, separation of individual species was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and their determination by neutron activation analysis (NAA) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Due to relatively low content of As in the analysed samples, it was only possible to determine DMA using the HPLC-ICP-MS mode. HPLC separation coupled with off-line determination by NAA enabled the determination of more extracted As species (especially inorganic) with good accuracy. Certified reference material (CRM) Rice Flour SRM 1568b (NIST) was used for the validation of both procedures.

In this study, we investigated the potential of mixtures of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water as tunable solvents for the microextraction of contaminants in solid and in liquid matrices. These two miscible solvents have very different dielectric constant and Hildebrand solubility parameters, so that tunable mixtures spanning a wide range of dispersion and hydrogen bonding forces could be easily prepared by simply changing their composition. In this way, rapid and more efficient extraction methods can be developed. A liquid-liquid and a solid-liquid microextraction method for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) in urine and ochratoxin A (OTA) in cereal baby food were developed as a proof of concept. Both, the chemical composition and the relative solvency of the THF-water mixtures, expressed as Teas solubility parameters, were studied in order to gain some insights into the chemical interactions governing analyte extraction. For urine, the salting-out extraction with THF:water and NaCl was evaluated, a process which is still scarcely investigated for analytical purposes. These methods featured good recoveries (above 95%), satisfactory standard deviation (5-6%) and good sensitivity (detection limits of 0.l μg L-1 for BPA and of 0.l ng g-1 for OTA) with the advantages of simplicity, rapidity and low consumption of reagents. Recoveries for other compounds and matrices (bisphenols ad phosphorus flame retardants in dust and in tap water, dyes in tap water and OTA in powder milk) were also assessed to prove the wide potential of these tunable solvent mixtures.

Child stunting is a public health problem in Malawi. In 2014, the Government of Malawi launched the Right Foods at the Right Time (RFRT) program in Ntchisi district delivering nutrition social and behavior change communication, a small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplement to children 6-23 months, and nutrition sensitive activities. Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems are key aspects of successful program implementation. We describe these and the methodology for an impact evaluation that was conducted for this program. Two monitoring systems using traditional and electronic platforms were established to register and track program delivery and processes including number of eligible beneficiaries, worker performance, program participation, and to monitor input, output, and outcome indicators. The impact evaluation used comparative cross-sectional and longitudinal designs to assess impact on anthropometric and infant and young child feeding outcomes. Three cross-sectional surveys (base-, mid-, and end-line) and two longitudinal cohorts of children followed in 6-month intervals from 6 to 24 months of age, were conducted in sampled households in the program and a neighboring comparison district. Additional M&E included qualitative studies, a process evaluation, and a cost-effectiveness study. The current paper describes lessons from this program's M&E, and demonstrates how multiple implementation research activities can inform course-correction and program scale-up.

Background Systematic reviews (SRs) were conducted by the Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review (NESR) team for the USDA's and the Department of Health and Human Services' Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project. Objectives The aim was to describe the SRs examining the relationship between types and amounts of complementary foods and beverages (CFBs) and growth, size, and body-composition outcomes. Methods The NESR team collaborated with subject matter experts to conduct this SR. The literature was searched and screened using predetermined criteria. For each included study, data were extracted and risk of bias was assessed. The evidence was qualitatively synthesized to develop a conclusion statement, and the strength of evidence was graded. Results This SR includes 49 articles that examined type, amount, or both of CFBs consumed and growth, size, and body-composition outcomes. Moderate evidence suggests that consuming either different amounts of meat, meat instead of iron-fortified cereal, or types of CFBs with different fats or fatty acids does not favorably or unfavorably influence growth, size, or body composition. In relation to overweight/obesity, insufficient evidence is available with regard to the intake of meat or CFBs with different fats or fatty acids. Limited evidence suggests that type and amount of fortified infant cereal does not favorably or unfavorably influence growth, size, body composition, or overweight/obesity. Limited evidence suggests that sugar-sweetened beverage consumption during the complementary feeding period is associated with increased obesity risk in childhood but is not associated with other measures of growth, size, or body composition. Limited evidence showed a positive association between juice intake and infant weight-for-length and child body mass index z scores. Insufficient evidence is available on other CFBs or dietary patterns in relation to outcomes. Conclusions Although several conclusions were drawn, additional research is needed that includes randomized controlled trials, examines a wider range of CFBs, considers issues of reverse causality, and adjusts for potential confounders to address gaps and limitations in the evidence.

Background Proper nutrition during infancy and toddlerhood is crucial for supporting healthy growth and development, including bone health. Complementary feeding is the process that starts when human milk or infant formula is complemented by other foods and beverages, beginning during late infancy and continuing to 24 mo of age. Objectives This article aims to describe systematic reviews (SRs) conducted by the Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review team for the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project to answer these questions: what is the relationship between 1) timing of introduction of complementary foods and beverages (CFBs) or 2) types and/or amounts of CFBs consumed and bone health? Methods: The literature was searched with the use of 4 databases (CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, and PubMed) to identify articles published from January 1980 to July 2016 that addressed these topics and met predetermined criteria for inclusion. For each study, data were extracted and risk of bias was assessed. The evidence was qualitatively synthesized to develop a conclusion statement, and the strength of the evidence was graded. Results Three articles addressed the timing of introduction of CFBs and bone health during childhood (through 18 y of age), and 2 addressed the types and/or amounts of CFBs consumed relative to bone health. Conclusions Insufficient evidence was available to draw conclusions about the relationships between the timing of CFB introduction and types and/or amounts of CFBs consumed and bone health. Therefore, a grade was not assignable for these SRs. The ability to draw conclusions was limited by an overall lack of research, failure to adjust for several key confounding factors, and heterogeneity in studies with regard to methodology, subject populations, and results. Additional research is needed that addresses these gaps and limitations.

Background Nutrition during infancy and toddlerhood may influence health and disease prevention across the life span. Complementary feeding (CF) starts when human milk or infant formula is complemented by other foods and beverages, beginning during infancy and continuing to age 24 mo. Objectives The aim of this study was to describe systematic reviews conducted for the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months Project to answer the following question: What is the relationship between the timing of the introduction of complementary foods and beverages (CFBs), or types and amounts of CFBs consumed, and the development of food allergy, atopic dermatitis/eczema, asthma, and allergic rhinitis? Methods The literature was searched using 4 databases (CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, PubMed) to identify articles published from January 1980 to February 2017 that met predetermined inclusion criteria. For each study, data were extracted and risk of bias was assessed. The evidence was qualitatively synthesized to develop a conclusion statement, and the strength of the evidence was graded. Results Thirty-one included articles addressed the timing of CFB introduction, and 47 articles addressed the types and amounts of CFBs consumed. Conclusions Moderate evidence suggests that there is no relationship between the age at which CF first begins and the risk of developing food allergy, atopic dermatitis/eczema, or childhood asthma. Limited to strong evidence, depending on the specific food, suggests that introducing allergenic foods in the first year of life (after 4 mo) does not increase the risk of food allergy and atopic dermatitis/eczema but may prevent peanut and egg allergy. There is not enough evidence to determine a relationship between diet diversity or dietary patterns and atopic disease. Research is needed to address gaps and limitations in the evidence on CF and atopic disease, including research that uses valid and reliable diagnostic measures and accounts for key confounders and potential reverse causality.

Background/purpose: The standard of daily fluoride intake (DFI) has been discussed mainly for adults since 1950s in Japan. Although dietary habits have changed significantly in recent years, there have been no further studies on DFI in the past 10 years, and the need for further review has been discussed. Additionally, fluoride bioavailability in infants is higher than that in adults; hence, an excess fluoride intake often manifests symptoms. However, the number of studies on the DFI of infants is less than that of adults. The purpose of this study is to investigate the DFI for Japanese infants to provide adequate fluoride application. Materials and methods: 20 products of infant foods for 4 age groups, 5 products of infant formulas, and 5 products of bottle water available in retail stores in Japan were prepared for this study. Fluoride concentration of each product was measured by microdiffusion method and fluoride ion-selective electrode, and then DFI in infants aged 5, 7, 9, and 12 months were calculated. Results: According to our study, the DFI in infants aged 5, 7, 9, and 12 months is 185.34 μg/day, 181.16 μg/day, 174.59 μg/day, and 179.19 μg/day, respectively. Conclusion: From this result, it is estimated that the DFI from infant food and beverages in Japan is lower than the standard in other countries. Lifestyles and dietary habits are different in each country, and a new standard of DFI for Japanese children is required to meet the adequate fluoride recommendation. A mini-survey of 29 different foods produced by 21 different Indian manufacturers was conducted for the presence of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2, aflatoxin M1 and deoxynivalenol. The products were purchased from local markets in Kolkata, India and commonly used in the complementary feeding of infants and toddlers in India. Using a previously established direct competitive enzyme-linked immunoassay for this analysis we show that 100% of the samples contained aflatoxin M1 at levels exceeding the recommended European Union levels of 25 ng kg−1 by more than an order of magnitude. Also, several (66%) of them contained detectable concentrations of deoxynivalenol with two samples (6.9%) exceeding European Union guidelines for baby food products (200 μg kg−1) and 51.7% samples with DON levels that can lead to dietary intake higher than 1 μg kg−1 recommended by the joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives. None of the samples contained aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2. The results, therefore, suggest that complementary feeding can put Indian infants and toddlers at risk of simultaneous exposures to deoxynivalenol and aflatoxin M1 and warrant an urgent in-depth research to track, increase surveillance and reduce mycotoxin contamination of baby foods manufactured in India.

The validation of a rapid, precise (RSD

Very little information is available with regards to the bioavailability of perchlorate in spinach or chard used in the production of baby foods commodities. In the present study, the uptake and accumulation of perchlorate were compared under two different treatments (T1: 1 and T2: 10 mg L−1 ClO4−). Our results indicate that spinach has a higher capacity to accumulate perchlorate than chard (p stem > roots) all gradually increased (p T1). No significant differences were found between the control and T1. The daily intake for perchlorate (control) is below the proposed international standard, however, it was exceeded in T1 and T2. The results suggested that perchlorate is actively accumulate in high concentrations in vegetables used in the production of baby food commodities and the exposure of perchlorate via the food consumption (baby foods) was evaluated as not safe.

Miniaturized and simplified sample preparation methods with reduced consumption of chemicals and non-halogenated solvents are presented for the determination of 12 sulfonamides in baby foods. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used for the identification and quantification of the compounds based on the acquisition of full spectrum at high resolution with accurate mass for precursor and its fragment ions. Three miniaturized protocols based on QuEChERS, salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction or low-temperature cleanup were evaluated regarding the extraction efficiency and removal capability of matrix co-extractives. All approaches achieved satisfactory recoveries (70.0-120.0%); however, the miniaturized QuEChERS distinguished by lower co-extractives content in the final extract providing lower matrix effects. Thus, the performance characteristics of the miniaturized QuEChERS were established using different matrices: beef-, egg yolk- and vegetable-based baby food or chicken- and vegetable-based baby food, in compliance with the Codex Alimentarius Commission guidelines. The target compounds were investigated in 30 commercial baby foods.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if the enhanced bioaccumulation of lutein in retina and brain of breastfed, compared to formula-fed, infant monkeys was associated with higher levels of serum total and HDL cholesterol, apolipoproteins, or mRNA/protein expression of carotenoid-related genes. Newborn rhesus macaques were either breastfed, fed a carotenoid-supplemented formula, or fed an unsupplemented formula for 6 months (n = 8, 8, 7). Real-time qPCR and western blotting were performed in two brain regions (occipital cortex and cerebellum) and two retina regions (macular and peripheral retina). Breastfed infants had higher serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, apoA-I, and apoB-100 levels than the combined formula-fed groups (P 0.05). Breast milk or infant formulas did not alter expression of the nine genes (CD36, SCARB1, SCARB2, LDLR, STARD3, GSTP1, BCO1, BCO2, RPE65) examined except for SCARB2 in the retina and brain regions. In conclusion, dietary regimen did not impact the expression of carotenoid-related genes except for SCARB2. However, carotenoid-related genes were differentially expressed across brain and retina regions. Breastfed infants had higher serum total and HDL cholesterol, and apolipoproteins, suggesting that lipoprotein levels might be important for delivering lutein to tissues, especially the macular retina, during infancy.

In recent years, so-called baby food pouches and other novel packaging and devices have been marketed for complementary feeding. To date, no experimental studies have been conducted to determine health and nutrition effects or the safety of baby food pouches and related feeding devices. Yet, these products hold the potential to fundamentally change the ways in which infants and children consume solid foods in infancy and early childhood. In this review, a selection of complementary feeding devices and their potential effects on breastfeeding, formula-feeding, safe and appropriate complementary feeding, and the timely transition to family foods are explored. Because manufacturers have innovated older designs of traditional feeding bottles and pacifiers for complementary feeding, perspectives on potential health effects and the safety of devices are drawn from research on feeding bottles and pacifiers. Recommendations include scaling up research on the safety, nutrition, and health impacts of commercial packaging and devices. In addition, manufacturers should ensure that devices conform to consumer product safety commission specifications and that instructions for use are in line with policies protecting pediatric dental health. Marketing of commercial devices and packaging should conform to the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.

Chemical attribution signatures indicative of O-isobutyl S-(2-diethylaminoethyl) methylphosphonothioate (Russian VX) synthetic routes were investigated in spiked food samples. Attribution signatures were identified using a multifaceted approach: Russian VX was synthesized using six synthetic routes and the chemical attribution signatures identified by GC-MS and LC-MS. Three synthetic routes were then down selected and spiked into complex matrices: bottled water, baby food, milk, liquid eggs, and hot dogs. Sampling and extraction methodologies were developed for these materials and used to isolate the attribution signatures and Russian VX from each matrix. Recoveries greater than 60% were achieved for most signatures in all matrices; some signatures provided recoveries greater than 100%, indicating some degradation during sample preparation. A chemometric model was then developed and validated with the concatenated data from GC-MS and LC-MS analyses of the signatures; the classification results of the model were > 75% for all samples. This work is part three of a three-part series in this issue of the United States-Sweden collaborative efforts towards the understanding of the chemical attribution signatures of Russian VX in crude materials and in food matrices.

Feeding problems are common, with implications for nutrition, growth and family stress, placing burden on primary care services. The Montreal Children's Hospital Feeding Scale (MCHFS) is a quick and reliable measure of feeding problems for clinical settings, but there is little examination of its relationship to commonly used research measures of parental feeding practice, child eating behaviour and observations of parent-infant interaction at mealtimes. We examined the relationships between the MCHFS, demographics and early feeding history, weight across the first year, parental report of feeding practices and child eating behaviours, and observations of maternal-infant feeding interaction at 1 year. The MCHFS, Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ) and Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) were completed by 69 mothers when their infants were 1-year-old (37 male, 32 female). Infant weight was measured at 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and 1 year. Mothers were observed feeding their infants at 1 year. The MCHFS was reliable (Cronbach's alpha = .90) and showed significant overlap with other measures of feeding and eating. Potential feeding problems were identified in 10 of the children (14%) reflecting similar rates in other community samples. Higher MCHFS scores were associated with lower birthweight and weight across the first year, greater satiety responsiveness, fussiness and slowness in eating, lower enjoyment of food and food responsiveness, and less observed infant food acceptance. Parents of infants with more feeding problems reported less encouragement of balance and variety in their children's diets. Conclusion: MCHFS showed good criterion validity with other parental report measures of eating and observations of mealtime interactions. MCHFS may be a useful tool for researching feeding problems in community samples.

The objective of this study was to determine the potential use of Trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and [10]-Gingerol (GI) to inhibit the growth of B. cereus in infant rice cereal reconstituted with infant formula. Samples were inoculated with either vegetative cells or spores of B. cereus (ATCC 14579), and they were treated with 500 ppm (mg/L) TC, EGCG and GI. They were stored at 7 °C, 23 °C, or 37 °C for 0, 4, 8 and 24 h to simulate advance preparation, handling and temperature abuse. At 23 °C no growth was observed with TC over 24 h. TC also showed the highest antimicrobial activity 37 °C by inhibiting the growth of B. cereus vegetative cells by 0.83 log CFU/g and B. cereus spores by 2.0 log CFU/g after 24 h. B. cereus (ATCC 14579) did not grow at 7 °C over 24 h and TC had no effect on its survival. Significant differences (P 0.05) were found in color and aroma of rice cereal samples containing EGCG and TC, respectively. Additionally, TC exhibited a cinnamon taste, while EGCG gave a purple color to the reconstituted rice cereal. These results indicate that TC may serve as a potential natural antimicrobial in reconstituted infant rice cereal even when utilized at low concentrations, inhibiting both vegetative cells and spores of B. cereus.

Because of their extremely low amount in complex samples, it is quite challenging to accurate determine residues of phosphorus-containing amino-acid-like herbicides (PAAHs) in food products. Here we develop novel core-shell mesoporous silica (CSMS) microspheres coated by titanium dioxide (CSMS@TiO2) for extraction and enrichment of PAAHs in baby foods. After the dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE), sheathless capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (sheathless CE-MS) is utilized to achieve efficient separation and sensitive detection. The synthesized CSMS@TiO2 composites are characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, proving TiO2 is uniformly distributed onto the channel surface of CSMS. The composites have essential features that are favorable for adsorption of the analytes on the material for d-SPE, including uniform diameter (1.0 μm with a shell thickness of 133 nm), large perpendicular mesopores (15.6 nm), high surface area (101.1 m2/g) and large pore volume (0.4 cm3/g). Taking glyphosate, glufosinate and their main metabolites (aminomethylphosphonic acid and 3-methylphosphinicopropionic acid) as analytes, selective and efficient enrichment is achieved by CSMS@TiO2-based d-SPE through the affinity interaction between titanium dioxide and phosphate groups. Sensitive detection of target compounds is achieved with low limits of quantitation (LOQs) between 0.3–1.6 ng/mL and excellent inter/intra-day repeatability. The compounds in nine different commercial baby foods from local markets are analyzed using the proposed method. Good recoveries of 82.3–102.6% are achieved with low RSDs (n = 5) of 2.1–8.3%. Our study indicates that the proposed CSMS@TiO2-based d-SPE combined with sheathless CE-MS is an accurate and reliable approach for sensitive determination of trace-amount PAAHs and their metabolites in complex samples.

Health differences between breast- and formula-fed infants have long been apparent despite great efforts in improving the function of baby formula by adjusting the levels of various milk nutritional components. However, the N-glycome, a type of oligosaccharide decorating a diverse range of proteins, has not been extensively studied in milk regarding its biological function. In this study, the anti-pathogenic function of the enzymatically released human and bovine milk N-glycome against 5 food-borne pathogens was investigated. The human milk N-glycome showed significantly higher activity than bovine milk. After enzymatic defucosylation of human and bovine N-glycan pool, UHPLC peak shifts were observed in both suggesting heavy fucosylation of samples. Furthermore, the anti-pathogenic activity of the defulosylated N-glycome decreased significantly, and the significance of functional difference between the two almost disappeared. This result indicates the essential role of fucosylation for the anti-pathogenic function of the milk N-glycome, especially in human milk.

A liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of acrylamide and 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2 H )-furanone (HDMF) in baby food. The sample preparation involves acetonitrile-based extraction combined with dispersive primary secondary amine (PSA) cleanup and cation-exchange solid-phase extraction (SPE), which promotes efficient removal of matrix interferences. Analytical selectivity and sensitivity were achieved for the quantification of acrylamide and HDMF in complex matrices such as fruit, cereal and milk-based baby foods; furthermore, adequate linearity (range 10–300 μg kg −1 ) in solvent and matrix-matched calibration curves, and appropriate recoveries (94–110%) and precision (RSD ≤ 10%), under repeatability and within-laboratory reproducibility conditions, were also obtained. Expanded measurement uncertainty was estimated at the 20 μg kg −1 level (limit of quantification) on the basis of data obtained from in-house validation, with values of 25.5 and 16.5% for acrylamide and HDMF, respectively. The fitness for purpose of developed method was verified by analyzing 15 commercial baby foods available in the Brazilian market. Acrylamide was detected in one plum-based baby food (35 μg kg −1 ) while HDMF in 67% of the samples analyzed (levels between 25 and 262 μg kg −1 ).

A fast and sensitive method was validated for the analysis of pesticide residues in baby food. After an QuEChERS-based extraction, the samples were analysed with a dual-channel liquid chromatography instrument coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The method consisted of two independent injections per sample. In the first injection the sample was analysed with a mobile phase optimal for the positive polarity ionisation (water, methanol, formic acid, and ammonium formate), whereas in the second injection the mobile phase was optimised for the negative polarity ionisation (water, acetonitrile, acetic acid). The total number of pesticides was 264, out of which 238 were analysed with the methanol gradient and 26 with the acetonitrile gradient. The dual-channel instrument allowed for sample multiplexing. Thus, sample throughput was equivalent to that of a single-channel system. The limit of quantitation, determined according to the DG SANTE guidance document, was 0.003 mg/kg for 97% of the evaluated compounds. The validation study was followed by a real sample survey. In 42 samples, 16 positives were found.

An easy and reliable method based on a novel electroanalytical nanostructured sensor has been developed to perform quantification of vitamin C in commercial and fortified cow-milk-based formulae and foods for infants and young children. The work is motivated by the need of a reliable analytical tool to be applied in quality control laboratories for the quantitative assessment of vitamin C where its rapid and cost-effective monitoring is essential. The ad hoc designed sensor, based on disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with Au nanoparticles decorated reduced graphene oxide flakes, exhibits a LOD of 0.088 mg L−1. The low cost, easy sample preparation, fast response and high reproducibility (RSD ≈ 8%) of the proposed method highlight its suitability for usage in quality control laboratories for determining vitamin C in real complex food matrices, envisaging the application of the sensing platform in the determination of other compounds relevant in food chemistry and food manufacturing.

The present work describes a method for the simultaneous determination of unmodified nucleosides and nucleotide mono-, di- and tri-phosphates by capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry (CE-MS). The use of hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) in the separation medium, and as an additive to the sheath liquid of the electrospray interface (ESI), generated a highly efficient and sensitive method. Instrumental limits of detection in the range of 14-53ngmL-1 for nucleosides and 7-23, 20-49 and 64-124ngmL-1 for nucleotide mono-, di-, and tri-phosphates, respectively, were found. Sample treatment involved diluting an aliquot of baby food with ultra-high quality water and applying centrifugation-assisted ultrafiltration (CUF). The proposed method was validated and used to analyse a variety of baby food samples (16 in total) such as fish, meat, fruits, and baby dairy desserts that may endogenously contain these analytes.

The levels of the minerals: Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, and the trace elements: Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn were determined in foods for 4–6, 7+ and 10+ months old babies in a brand available on the UK market. The mineral contents in the vegetarian meals for all the age groups were similar, in contrast, when compared to the non-vegetarian options, the Ca, Na and P levels were higher in the former. Both the trace elements and minerals levels in the 4–6 months vegetarian meal were the lowest of all the products analysed. The Cu, Se and Zn levels in all the meals were comparable to those in mature human breast milk. Calculations of the following molar ratios: Zn:Cu, Fe:Zn, and Fe:Mn, pairs of elements that have been shown to interaction antagonistically, were higher in the vegetarian meals.

A high sensitive and reliable multiresidue method was developed and validated for determination of twelve sulfonamides and five acetylated metabolites in baby foods by using UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS. The sample preparation included two extraction methods as QuEChERS and ASE. The original QuEChERS method was performed, whereas ASE method was optimized to achieve the best recovery for all analytes. UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS parameters were optimized to obtain good retention and separation in LC and high sensitivity and selectivity in MS. The performance of the method was evaluated according to the European Commision Decision 2002/657/EC. Matrix matched calibration curves showed good r2 (≥0.999) and LOQ was ranged from 0.10 to 0.55μg/kg. ASE was significantly more effective for extraction of the analytes (recovery ranged from 75.5 to 96.6% with RSD≤10.1%) than QuEChERS (recovery ranged from 60.9 to 85.9% with RSD≤19.1%). This method was applied to the analysis of 47 different baby foods and no positive samples were found.

Potential adverse reactions among infants and young children could appear after consumption of food containing small amounts of bioactive amines. This study presents the first assessment of biogenic amines occurrence in ready-to-eat vegetable without/with fish, meat and fruit baby products intended for the youngest consumers. The biogenic amine profiles and quantities of 6 amines were evaluated in 68 commercial baby foods produced by 10 leading manufacturers available in Poland, using HPLC-APCI-MS method. The total amine contents in analyzed products were obtained in the range of 1283–101421 ng/g. The maximum level of histamine (2375 ng/g) was found in the sample with spinach, tyramine (1667 ng/g) in fruit sample with banana, and of di- and polyamines (1263–53416 ng/g) in samples containing green peas. The results of amine analysis in baby foods indicated the presence of food ingredients which may be necessary to remove (tuna, possibly spinach) or reduce the amount added (spinach, green peas), either reduce their use by infants under 12 months of age (beef). Special attention should also be given to control the consumption of fruit baby products containing banana (higher tyramine and putrescine level). On the basis of obtained results a potential %ARfD, and the BAI were also evaluated.

Fussy/picky eating - i.e. consistently avoiding certain foods - is common in childhood and can be worrisome for parents. Repeated exposure to various flavors as occurs in breastmilk and early exposure to complementary feeding may increase food acceptance and thereby decrease fussy eating. This study examines the associations between infant feeding and child fussy eating in 4779 participants of Generation R, a Dutch population-based cohort. Breastfeeding initiation and continuation, and timing of complementary feeding were assessed by questionnaires at 2, 6, and 12 months. The food fussiness scale of the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire was administered at 4 years. Linear regression analyses were performed, adjusted for confounders. Children who were never breastfed did not differ in fussy eating frequency from children breastfed for 6 months or longer. However, children who were breastfed for less than 2 months had a 0.70 points higher food fussiness sum-score (95%CI:0.27; 1.12) than children breastfed for 6 months or longer. An earlier introduction of vegetables was associated with less fussy eating behavior (p-for-trend:0.005). Particularly children who were introduced to vegetables between 4 and 5 months had a 0.60 point lower food fussiness score (95%CI: 1.06;-0.15) than children introduced to vegetables after 6 months. An early introduction to fruits or any solids was not significantly related to fussy eating, although the effect estimates were in the same direction as for introducing vegetables early. Results suggest that breastfeeding does not predict fussy eating. However, introducing vegetables into a child's diet before 5 months might be protective against fussy eating, although future research should account for parents' own fussy eating.

In this work a new multiresidue method has been developed for the determination of 15 betalactam antibiotics in infant milk and yogurt based on follow-on milk by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The separation was achieved in 6min, using a Kinetex Biphenyl Core-Shell column (50mmx2.1mm, 1.7µm), with a mobile phase of water with 0.05% acetic acid and methanol. The analytes were detected in ESI+ with multiple reaction monitoring mode and fragmentation conditions were optimized to obtain the highest sensitivity. The use of a biphenyl bonded column allowed to obtain a satisfactory selectivity for all the studied analytes. Moreover, ion-pair salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (IP-SALLE) has been proposed as sample treatment and optimized by means of experimental design. Under optimum conditions, the recoveries for fortified samples ranged from 79% to 93%, (RSD

The use of salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) has been evaluated for the determination of tetracyclines in infant foods based on meat and vegetables or in milk. To obtain satisfactory extraction efficiencies for the studied analytes, several parameters affecting the SALLE procedure were optimized. Analytical performances of the method were satisfactory, obtaining limits of quantification lower than 0.48μgkg-1 in all cases. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (%, RSD) was below 11.3%. The extraction efficiency for fortified samples ranged from 89.2 to 96.8%, with RSDs lower than 7.3%. Matrix effect was evaluated for all samples studied, being lower than |21|% in all cases. In relation to the low solvent consumption, the proposed methodology could be considered rapid, cheap and environmentally friendly. Its applicability has been successfully tested in a wide range of infant foods.

peer-reviewed Food waste in hospitals is of major concern for two reasons: first, healthcare needs to move toward preventative and demand led models for sustainability and second, food system sustainability needs to seek preventative measures such as diet adaptation and waste prevention. The impact of breast-milk substitute use on health services is well established in literature in terms of healthcare implications, cost and resourcing, however as a food demand and waste management issue little has been published to date. This paper presents the use of a desk based backcasting method to analyse food waste prevention, mitigation and management options within the Irish Maternity Service. Best practice in healthcare provision and waste management regulations are used to frame solutions. Strategic problem orientation revealed that 61% of the volume of ready to use breast-milk substitutes purchased by maternity services remains unconsumed and ends up as waste. Thirteen viable strategies to prevent and manage this waste were identified. Significant opportunities exist to prevent waste and also decrease food demand leading to both positive health and environmental outcomes. Backcasting methods display great promise in delivering food waste management strategies in healthcare settings, especially where evidenced best practice policies exist to inform solution forming processes. In terms of food waste prevention and management, difficulties arise in distinguishing between demand reduction, waste prevention and waste reduction measures under the current Waste Management Hierarchy definitions. Ultimately demand reduction at source requires prioritisation, a strategy which is complimentary to health policy on infant feeding.

Rice is known to accumulate methylmercury (MeHg) in the rice grains. MeHg as a neurotoxin impacts on the human central nervous systems and especially on the developing brain. In this exploratory study, 87 commercial rice products sold in Europe, including nine baby-rice products, were analyzed for total Hg and MeHg content. MeHg concentration in all rice products investigated range from 0.11 to 6.45μgkg(-1) with an average value of 1.91±1.07μgkg(-1) and baby-rice is not significantly different from other rice products. Total Hg ranges from 0.53 to 11.1μgkg(-1) with an average of 3.04±2.07μgkg(-1). MeHg concentrations in all rice products studied in this work would not exceed the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). 30% of all commercial market rice products exceeded 10% of the PTWI calculated for toddlers or 13% of products for adults with rice based diet.

With the aim to develop a new gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method to analyze 24 pesticide residues in baby foods at the level imposed by established regulation two simple, rapid and environmental-friendly sample preparation techniques based on QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, robust and safe) were compared - QuEChERS with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and QuEChERS with dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE). Both sample preparation techniques achieved suitable performance criteria, including selectivity, linearity, acceptable recovery (70-120%) and precision (⩽20%). A higher enrichment factor was observed for DLLME and consequently better limits of detection and quantification were obtained. Nevertheless, d-SPE provided a more effective removal of matrix co-extractives from extracts than DLLME, which contributed to lower matrix effects. Twenty-two commercial fruit-based baby food samples were analyzed by the developed method, being procymidone detected in one sample at a level above the legal limit established by EU.

There is increasing concern about possible adverse effects of soy based infant formulas (SBIF) due to their high amount of isoflavones (ISO). The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of neonatal exposure to ISO on reproductive system of female Wistar rats. Animals were exposed to an ISO depleted diet or a diet enriched with an ISO extract (IRD; 508mg ISO/kg) during embryogenesis and adolescence. Pups of each group were fed daily by pipette with ISO-suspension (ISO+; 32mg ISO/kg bw) or placebo from postnatal day (PND) 1 until PND23 resulting in plasma concentrations similar to levels reported in infants fed SBIF. The visceral fat mass was reduced by long-term IRD. Vaginal epithelial height was increased at PND23 and vaginal opening was precocious in ISO+ groups. Later in life, more often irregular estrus cycles were observed in rats of ISO+ groups. In addition, FSH levels and uterine epithelial heights were increased at PND80 in ISO+ groups. In summary, the results indicate that neonatal ISO intake, resulting in plasma concentrations achievable through SBIF, has an estrogenic effect on prepubertal rats and influences female reproductive tract later in life.
