Abstract

Inequality in metropolitan areas is part of a paradoxical triangle of competing motives over resources allocation. Chief among inequality/equity rivals is the penchant for urban economic development, but in recent decades, ecological sustainability has also become increasingly important in this triangle. To understand inequality in global cities in such a context, one must recognize the intensity of economic development motives for those particular metropolitan areas seeking to maintain worldwide centrality, connectivity and command over the forces of globalization. As a comparative analysis of 53 large U.S. metropolitan areas, this paper examines the apparatus of a global city in response to globalization, particularly since such metropolitan areas produce higher socioeconomic inequality than other places. Through a causal path analysis, it empirically uncovers essential components of the paradoxical triangle in the ongoing struggle of global cities to sustain their world-city status. In so doing, the evidence suggests heightened inequality is a function of (a) the global city’s use of certain “cornerstone” resources to sustain global advantage, and (b) its resultant polarized employment structure and commensurate skewed social stratification.

Abstract

Inequality in metropolitan areas is at least partly framed by a paradoxical triangle of competing constituency motives over resources allocation. Chief among these motives is the penchant for urban economic development, leaving ecological sustainability and socioeconomic equity as “subordinate” considerations. For global cities in particular, understanding inequality in such a context highlights the extraordinary intensity of economic development motives in sustaining their worldwide centrality, connectivity and command over the forces of globalization. As a comparative empirical study of 53 large U.S. metropolitan areas, this paper examines economic development within a global city that plausibly explains its propensity for heightened income inequality. It applies an empirical-based path analysis in tracing essential workings of the paradoxical triangle in a global city's ongoing struggle to maintain global eminence. As an exploratory inquiry, it examines heightened income inequality as a function of (a) the global city's assemblage of strategic “cornerstone” resources to sustain global advantage, and (b) the concomitant polarizing effect of such assemblage on metropolitan employment structure.

Abstract

Molecular phylogenetic approaches have greatly improved our knowledge of the pattern and process of biological diversification across the globe; however, many regions remain poorly documented, even for well-studied vertebrate taxa. The Philippine archipelago, one of the least-studied ‘biodiversity hotspots’, is an ideal natural laboratory for investigating the factors driving diversification in an insular and geologically dynamic setting. We investigated the history and geography of diversification of the Philippine populations of a widespread montane bird, the White-browed Shortwing (Brachypteryx montana). Leveraging dense archipelago-wide sampling, we generated a multi-locus genetic dataset (one nuclear and two mtDNA markers), which we analyzed using phylogenetic, population genetic, and coalescent-based methods. Our results demonstrate that Philippine shortwings (1) likely colonized the Philippines from the Sunda Shelf to Mindanao in the late Miocene or Pliocene, (2) diversified across inter-island barriers into three divergent lineages during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene, (3) have not diversified within the largest island, Luzon, contrary to patterns observed in other montane taxa, and (4) colonized Palawan from the oceanic Philippines rather than from Borneo, challenging the assumption of Palawan functioning exclusively as a biogeographic extension of the Sunda Shelf. Additionally, our finding that divergent (c. 4.0 mya) lineages are coexisting in secondary sympatry on Mindanao without apparent gene flow suggests that the speciation process is likely complete for these shortwing lineages. Overall, these investigations provide insight into how topography and island boundaries influence diversification within remote oceanic archipelagos and echo the results of many other studies in demonstrating that taxonomic diversity continues to be underestimated in the Philippines.

Abstract

Manipulation of submicrometer particles in Lab-on-a-Chip systems using acoustophoresis is challenging due to the effect of acoustic streaming. We numerically study the transition from radiation force dominated to streaming-induced drag force dominated acoustophoresis using the fundamental and higher-order resonances of a water-filled rectangular microchannel. We consider the cases of single mode excitation and simultaneous double mode excitation. The acoustic fields at resonance are calculated using a second-order perturbation expansion of the thermoviscous acoustic problem. We show that the acoustophoretic forces using simultaneous mode excitation can be obtained from a linear combination of the single mode forces. We find that the critical size of suspended particles at the transition scales inversely with the square root of the resonance frequency. Particle tracing shows radiation-dominated concentration of 800 nm diameter polystyrene particles using the fifth-order resonance at 9.8 MHz. For smaller particles we find a streaming-assisted concentration regime where particles are concentrated into the streaming regions close to the walls. In case of double mode excitation, the particle concentrations increase a factor 4 to 18 times for 200 nm to 800 nm particles respectively. We include the numerical model, consisting of a COMSOL implementation and MATLAB control script, as supplemental material.

Abstract

Progress in advanced therapeutic concepts requires the development of appropriate carrier systems for intracellular drug delivery. Consequently, analysis of interaction between carriers, drugs and cells as well as their uptake and intracellular fate is a current focus of research interest. In this context, Raman spectroscopy recently became an emerging analytical technique, due to its non-destructive, chemically selective and label-free working principle. In this review, we briefly present the state-of-the-art technologies for cell visualization and drug internalization. Against this background, Raman microscopy is introduced as a versatile analytical technique. An overview of various Raman spectroscopy investigations in this field is given including interactions of cells with drug molecules, carrier systems and other nanomaterials. Further, Raman instrumentations and sample preparation methods are discussed. Finally, as the analytical limit is not reached yet, a future perspective for Raman microscopy in pharmaceutical and biomedical research on the single cell level is given.

Abstract

Non-linear optics encompasses a range of optical phenomena, including two- and three-photon fluorescence, second harmonic generation (SHG), sum frequency generation (SFG), difference frequency generation (DFG), third harmonic generation (THG), coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). The combined advantages of using these phenomena for imaging complex pharmaceutical systems include chemical and structural specificities, high optical spatial and temporal resolutions, no requirement for labels, and the ability to image in an aqueous environment. These features make such imaging well suited for a wide range of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical investigations, including material and dosage form characterisation, dosage form digestion and drug release, and drug and nanoparticle distribution in tissues and within live cells. In this review, non-linear optical phenomena used in imaging will be introduced, together with their advantages and disadvantages in the pharmaceutical context. Research on pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical applications is discussed, and potential future applications of the technology are considered.

Abstract

Historically the babblers have been assigned to the family Timaliidae but several recent studies have attempted to rest the taxonomy of this diverse passerine assemblage on a more firm evolutionary footing. The result has been a major rearrangement of the group. A well-supported and comprehensive phylogeny for this widespread avian group is an important part of testing evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses, especially in Asia where the babblers are a key component of many forest ecosystems. However, the genus Liocichla is poorly represented in these prior studies of babbler systematics. We used a multilocus molecular genetic approach to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for all five currently recognized species in the avian genus Liocichla. Multilocus DNA sequence data was used to construct individual gene trees using maximum likelihood and species trees were estimated from gene trees using Bayesian analyses. Divergence dates were obtained using a molecular clock approach. Molecular data estimate a probable window of time for the origin for the Liocichla from the mid to late Miocene, between 5.55 and 12.87 Ma. Despite plumage similarities between the insular Taiwan endemic, L. steerii, and the continental L. bugunorum and L. omeiensis, molecular data suggest that L. steerii is the sister taxon to all continental Liocichla. The continental Liocichla are comprised of two lineages; a lineage containing L. omeiensis and L. bugunorum and a lineage comprised of L. phoenicea and L. ripponi. The comparatively early divergence of L. steerii within the Liocichla may be illusory due to extinct and therefore unsampled lineages. L. ripponi and L. phoenicea are parapatric with a Pleistocene split (0.07–1.88 Ma) occurring between an Eastern Himalayan L. phoenicea and a Northern Indochina distributed L. ripponi. L. bugunorum and L. omeiensis underwent a similar split between the Eastern Himalaya (L. bugunorum) and Central China (L. omeiensis) divided by the Hengduan Mountains. This study supports an origin of the Liocichla occurring sometime prior to the Miocene–Pliocene boundary, a period of significant climatic upheaval in Asia. The biogeographical patterns within the Liocichla mirror those of other birds in the region and allude to common geological and climatic drivers of avian diversification in Asia.

Abstract

Studies directed on the synthesis of the pyrrole containing marine natural products Rigidin and Rigidin E via vinylogous iminium salts are described. The successful strategy relies on the formation of a 2,4-disubstituted pyrrole from a vinamidinium salt followed by acylation at the 5-position of pyrrole. Halogenation and aminocarbonylation at the 3-position of pyrrole followed by hydrolysis of the ester group at C-2 and subsequent Curtius rearrangement generates the pyrrolopyrimidine skeleton. A final deprotection step completes the synthesis of Rigidin and Rigidin E.

Abstract

Research is being conducted to address aging of the containment pressure boundary in light-water reactor plants. Objectives of this research are to (1) understand the significant factors relating to corrosion occurrence, efficacy of inspection, and structural capacity reduction of steel containments and of liners of concrete containments; (2) provide the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) reviewers a means of establishing current structural capacity margins or estimating future residual structural capacity margins for steel containments and concrete containments as limited by liner integrity; and (3) provide recommendations, as appropriate, on information to be requested of licensees for guidance that could be utilized by USNRC reviewers in assessing the seriousness of reported incidences of containment degradation. Activities include development of a degradation assessment methodology; reviews of techniques and methods for inspection and repair of containment metallic pressure boundaries; evaluation of candidate techniques for inspection of inaccessible regions of containment metallic pressure boundaries; establishment of a methodology for reliability-based condition assessments of steel containments and liners; and fragility assessments of steel containments with localized corrosion.

A detailed understanding of the behavioural interactions between males and females is crucial for elucidating the selection pressures shaping mating system evolution; however, these interactions are often difficult to observe, particularly in free-living populations. We simulated extraterritorial intrusions by presenting conspecific models on to territories of a Neotropical migratory passerine, the yellow-breasted chat, Icteria virens. Simulated intrusions elicited different responses based on the sex of the focal individual and the sex and species of the model. Behavioural responses of the focal individuals were largely directed towards conspecific models, whereas simulated heterospecific intrusions, using a Carolina wren, Thryothorus ludovicianus, model, elicited minimal response. Male song was not related to any particular model presentation. Males directed mating behaviours, including courtship displays and copulations, exclusively towards the female conspecific model. Males behaved aggressively towards the conspecific male model. In contrast, females never showed any courtship behaviour towards the male model and showed significant aggression towards the conspecific female model. The results of this study reveal that territorial aggression in yellow-breasted chats is strongly intrasexual. Additionally, simulated female extraterritorial intrusions, but not male intrusions, resulted in extrapair courtship and copulation. This pattern is likely to be typical of many socially monogamous species and points to the behavioural mechanisms underlying both monogamy and extrapair mating systems.

Deep Chandra LETGS observations of the isolated neutron star candidate RXJ1856.5-3754 have demonstrated that, to within the accuracy of the observations, the X-ray spectrum is consistent with a blackbody with a temperature of 7 × 105 K and a radiation radius R∞ ∼ 5 km—much too small for current neutron star equations of state. The small apparent radius, lack of X-ray pulsations down to a level of 3%, and failure to explain the observations in terms of current neutron star models, lead to the suggestion that RXJ1856.5-3754 might be a strange quark star. We discuss some issues associated with this interpretation and look briefly at RX J1856.5-3754 in the context of other have smooth featureless spectra. Both X-ray and optical spectra of some of these objects might be explained by “naked” crusted neutron stars or strange quark stars with thin coronae. RX J1856.5-3754 remains an interesting strange quark star candidate.

Abstract

The ring expansion of a dimethyl-substituted vinylcyclobutene derivative to the corresponding dimethyl-substituted cyclohexadiene or aromatic compound was studied. It was found that metal complexes of Ni(I), Ti(III), Sm(II), and Fe(II), which can undergo an inner-sphere electron-transfer reaction, allow the rearrangement to occur at room temperature. Other oxidation states of these metals and complexes that can only undergo an outer-sphere electron-transfer process do not promote this ring expansion reaction.
