Chitosan exhibits moderate antimicrobial properties. Here, we enhanced the antimicrobial properties of chitosan through alkylation and chlorination and evaluated the effect of alkylation on chitosan's hydrophobicity, bacterial attachment, chlorination, biocidal property, and stability. First, chitosan films were prepared through casting and were then immersed in a hexanal solution of different concentrations. The aldehyde groups of hexanal reacted with the amino group in chitosan through a Schiff base reaction. Next, the hexanal-modified chitosan films were soaked in 10 % bleach to form N-halamine. The results demonstrated that the surface became more hydrophobic, and chitosan films with increased hexanal-grafting concentrations exhibited less bacterial attachment. However, the degree of chlorination decreased as the degree of alkylation increased, further reducing the diameter of the zone of inhibition. Nevertheless, all chlorinated samples could kill ~5 log of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli within 30 min. Unlike previous results for chlorinated chitosan, in this study, alkylation before chlorination enhanced antibacterial properties and bactericidal ability and decelerated the degradation of chlorinated samples. The results of a systematic evaluation indicated that a hexanal-grafting concentration of approximately 80 mM maintains the equilibrium of the various properties of chitosan. Alkylated and chlorinated chitosan has considerable potential application as mask filter layers.

Disinfectants are added to swimming pools to kill harmful pathogens. Although liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is the most commonly used disinfectant, alternative disinfection techniques like electrochemically generated mixed oxidants or electrochemically generated chlorine, often referred to as salt water pools, are growing in popularity. However, these disinfectants react with natural organic matter and anthropogenic contaminants introduced to the pool water by swimmers to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs). DBPs have been linked to several adverse health effects, such as bladder cancer, adverse birth outcomes, and asthma. In this study, we quantified 60 DBPs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and assessed the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of an indoor community swimming pool before and after switching to a salt water pool with electrochemically generated chlorine. Interestingly, the total DBPs increased by 15% upon implementation of the salt water pool, but the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity decreased by 45% and 15%, respectively. Predominant DBP classes formed were haloacetic acids, with trichloroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid contributing 57% of the average total DBPs formed. Haloacetonitriles, haloacetic acids, and haloacetaldehydes were the primary drivers of calculated cytotoxicity, and haloacetic acids were the primary driver of calculated genotoxicity. Diiodoacetic acid, a highly toxic iodinated DBP, is reported for the first time in swimming pool water. Bromide impurities in sodium chloride used to electrochemically generate chlorine led to a 73% increase in brominated DBPs, primarily driven by bromochloroacetic acid. This study presents the most extensive DBP study to-date for salt water pools.

Chlorine disinfection of saline wastewater effluents rich in bromide and iodide forms relatively toxic brominated and iodinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Ultrasonication is a relatively new water treatment technology, and it is less sensitive to suspended solids in wastewaters. In this study, we examined the effects of ultrasonication (in terms of reactor type and combination mode with chlorination) on the DBP formation and toxicity in chlorinated primary and secondary saline wastewater effluents. Compared with the chlorinated wastewater effluent samples without ultrasonication, ultrasonic horn pretreatment of the wastewater effluent samples reduced the total organic halogen (TOX) levels in chlorination by ∼30%, but ultrasonic bath pretreatment of the wastewater samples did not significantly change the TOX levels in chlorination, which might be attributed to the higher energy utilization and decomposition extent of organic DBP precursors in the ultrasonic horn reactor. Moreover, the TOX levels in the chlorinated samples with ultrasonic horn pretreatment (USH-chlorination), simultaneous treatment (chlorination+USH) and subsequent treatment (chlorination-USH) were also significantly reduced, with the maximum TOX reductions occurring in the samples with ultrasonic horn pretreatment. A toxicity index was calculated by weighting and summing the levels of total organic chlorine, total organic bromine and total organic iodine in each treated sample. The calculated toxicity index values of the chlorinated wastewater effluent samples followed a descending rank order of "chlorination""chlorination+USH""chlorination-USH""USH-chlorination", with the lowest toxicity occurring in the samples with ultrasonic horn pretreatment. Then, a developmental toxicity bioassay was conducted for each treated sample. The measured toxicity index values of the chlorinated wastewater samples followed the same descending rank order.

Although the health benefits of swimming are well-documented, health effects such as asthma and bladder cancer are linked to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in pool water. DBPs are formed from the reaction of disinfectants such as chlorine (Cl) or bromine (Br) with organics in the water. Our previous study (Daiber et al., Environ. Sci. Technol. 50, 6652; 2016) found correlations between the concentrations of classes of DBPs and the mutagenic potencies of waters from chlorinated or brominated swimming pools and spas. We extended this study by identifying significantly different concentrations of 21 individual DBPs in brominated or chlorinated pool and spa waters as well as identifying which DBPs and additional DBP classes were most associated with the mutagenicity of these waters. Using data from our previous study, we found that among 21 DBPs analyzed in 21 pool and spa waters, the concentration of bromoacetic acid was significantly higher in Br-waters versus Cl-waters, whereas the concentration of trichloroacetic acid was significantly higher in Cl-waters. Five Br-DBPs (tribromomethane, dibromochloroacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, bromoacetic acid, and tribromoacetic acid) had significantly higher concentrations in Br-spa versus Cl-spa waters. Cl-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Cl-DBPs (trichloroacetaldehyde, trichloromethane, dichloroacetic acid, and chloroacetic acid), whereas Br-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Br-DBPs (tribromomethane, dibromoacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, and tribromoacetic acid). The concentrations of the sum of all 4 trihalomethanes, all 11 Br-DBPs, and all 5 nitrogen-containing DBPs were each significantly higher in brominated than in chlorinated pools and spas. The 8 Br-DBPs were the only DBPs whose individual concentrations were significantly correlated with the mutagenic potencies of the pool and spa waters. These results, along with those from our earlier study, highlight the importance of Br-DBPs in the mutagenicity of these recreational waters.

Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic matter naturally present in water, leading to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Multi-analyte methods based on mass spectrometry (MS) are preferred to quantify multiple DBP classes at once however, most require extensive sample pre-treatment and significant resources. In this study, two analytical methods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap (PT) coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was optimized that automated sample pre-treatment and analyzed volatile and semi-volatile compounds, including trihalomethanes (THMs), iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloketones (HKTs) and halonitromethanes (HNMs). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 µg/L for most DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low µg/L range. A second method with liquid chromatography (LC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids (HAAs) with a simple clean-up and direct injection. The LC-MS/MS direct injection method has the lowest detection limits reported (0.2-0.5 µg/L). Both methods have a simple sample pre-treatment, which make it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform formation conditions (UFC) formation potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water samples containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination formation potential test maximized THMs and HAAs while UFC maximized HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical methods. Disinfected drinking water from four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.

In this study, the formation of iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) was systematically evaluated and compared for three treatment processes - (i) chlorination, (ii) monochloramine, and (iii) dichloramination - under different pH conditions. The results demonstrated that I-THM formation decreased in the order of monochloraminationdichloraminationchlorination in acidic and neutral pH. However, the generation of I-THMs increased in the dichloraminationchlorinationmonochloramination order in alkaline condition. Specifically, the formation of I-THMs increased as pH increased from 5 to 9 during chlorination and monochloramination processes, while the maximum I-THM formation occurred at pH 7 during dichloramination. The discrepancy could be mainly related to the stability of the three chlor (am) ine disinfectants at different pH conditions. In the race to deliver clean water to communities through potable water reuse, disinfection and water quality assessment are and will continue to be fundamental factors. There are over 700 disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water; evaluating each compound is practically impossible and very time consuming. A bioanalytical approach could be an answer to this challenge. In this work, the response of four major classes of DBPs toward mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and cytoplasmic adenosine triphosphate (C-ATP) was investigated with human carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are an unintended consequence of drinking water disinfection, and can have significant toxicity. XAD resins are commonly used to extract and enrich trace levels of DBPs for comprehensive, nontarget identification of DBPs and also for in vitro toxicity studies. However, XAD resin recoveries for complete classes of halogenated DBPs have not been evaluated, particularly for low, environmentally relevant levels (ng/L to low µg/L). Thus, it is not known whether levels of DBPs or the toxicity of drinking water might be underestimated. In this study, DAX-8/XAD-2 layered resins were evaluated, considering both adsorption and elution from the resins, for extracting 66 DBPs from water. Results demonstrate that among the 7 classes of DBPs investigated, trihalomethanes (THMs), including iodo-THMs, were the most efficiently adsorbed, with recovery of most THMs ranging from 50%-96%, followed by halonitromethanes (40%-90%). The adsorption ability of XAD resins for haloacetonitriles, haloacetamides, and haloacetaldehydes was highly dependent on the individual species. The adsorption capacity of XAD resins for haloacetic acids was lower (5%-48%), even after adjusting to pH 1 before extraction. Recovery efficiency for most DBPs was comparable with their adsorption, as most were eluted effectively from XAD resins by ethyl acetate. DBP polarity and molecular weight were the two most important factors that determine their recovery. Recovery of trichloromethane, iodoacetic acid, chloro- and iodo-acetonitrile, and chloroacetamide were among the lowest, which could lead to underestimation of toxicity, particularly for iodoacetic acid and iodo-acetonitrile, which are highly toxic.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs), formed from the reactions of disinfectants with natural organic matter and halides in drinking water, were considered to be cytotoxic and genotoxic, and might trigger various cancers. The relatively low concentration of DBPs in finished water (low µg/L or even ng/L levels) and the interference from water matrix inhibited in situ determination of DBPs. Moreover, the further formation and degradation of DBPs by disinfectants during the holding time (several hours to several days) from sample collection to analysis could adversely affect the determination of DBPs. To obtain accurate, precise and reliable data of DBP occurrence and formation, robust and reliable sample preservation is indispensable. However, the commonly used quenching agents (e.g., sodium sulfite, sodium thiosulfate, and ascorbic acid) for sample preservation can decompose reactive DBPs by reductive dehalogenation. This study evaluated the performance of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and glutathione (GSH) as quenching agents for the analysis of halogenated DBPs by investigating the stoichiometry of the disinfectant-quenching agent reaction, the formation of DBPs during chlor(am)ination of NAC or GSH, and the effects of NAC or GSH on the stability of 18 individual DBPs and total organic halogen (TOX). Based on the results of this study, NAC and GSH were considered to be ideal quenching agents for the analysis of most DBPs and TOX, except halonitromethanes.

A survey was conducted at eight U.S. drinking water plants, that spanned a wide range of water qualities and treatment/disinfection practices. Plants that treated heavily-wastewater-impacted source waters had lower trihalomethane to dihaloacetonitrile ratios due to the presence of more organic nitrogen and HAN precursors. As the bromide to total organic carbon ratio increased, there was more bromine incorporation into DBPs. This has been shown in other studies for THMs and selected emerging DBPs (HANs), whereas this study examined bromine incorporation for a wider group of emerging DBPs (haloacetaldehydes, halonitromethanes). Moreover, bromine incorporation into the emerging DBPs was, in general, similar to that of the THMs. Epidemiology studies that show an association between adverse health effects and brominated THMs may be due to the formation of brominated emerging DBPs of heath concern. Plants with higher free chlorine contact times before ammonia addition to form chloramines had less iodinated DBP formation in chloraminated distribution systems, where there was more oxidation of the iodide to iodate (a sink for the iodide) by the chlorine. This has been shown in many bench-scale studies (primarily for iodinated THMs), but seldom in full-scale studies (where this study also showed the impact on total organic iodine. Collectively, the THMs, haloacetic acids, and emerging DBPs accounted for a significant portion of the TOCl, TOBr, and TOI; however, ∼50% of the TOCl and TOBr is still unknown. The correlation of the sum of detected DBPs with the TOCl and TOBr suggests that they can be used as reliable surrogates.

UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) advanced oxidation process has attracted significant attention for removal of micropollutants in water. However, during practical water treatment applications, the PMS treatment must be performed before the UV treatment to achieve full contact. In this study, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was selected as the target micropollutant. Four different operational approaches, including UV alone, PMS alone, simultaneous UV/PMS and sequential PMS-UV, were compared for their differences in SMX removal and disinfection by-product (DBP) formation potentials during chlorine-driven disinfection. Among the four approaches, UV/PMS and PMS-UV achieved over 90% removal efficiencies for SMX without substantial differences. For raw water, the trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation potential after treatment with PMS-UV was lower than that after UV/PMS treatment. The time interval over which the PMS-UV process was conducted had little effect on the final removal efficiency for SMX. However, a brief (5 min) pre-PMS treatment significantly reduced the TCNM formation potential and the genotoxicity from DBPs. The formation risk for TCNM during chlorination increased markedly with increasing PMS dosages, and the appropriate dosage under these experimental conditions was suggested to be 0.5-1.0 mmol/L. Under alkaline conditions, PMS-UV treatment can enhance SMX degradation as well as dramatically reduced the formation potentials for haloketones, haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes. This study suggests that proper optimization of UV/PMS processes can remove SMX and reduce its DBP formation.

An efficient chlorination reaction of in situ generated (β-diazo-α,α-difluoroethyl)phosphonates has been achieved with hydrochloric acid as a chlorine source under mild and operationally convenient conditions. The reaction does not need any catalyst and tolerates a wide scope of substrates, which affords the (β-chlorodifluoroethyl)phosphonate products in good to excellent yields. This reaction represents the first example of the halogenation of difluoroalkyl diazo compounds, and also provides an easy way for the synthesis of difluoromethylenephosphonate-containing compounds.

Thiolate-bridged hetero-bimetallic complexes [Cp*M(MeCN)N2S2FeCl][PF6] (2, M = Ru; 3, M = Co, Cp* = η5-C5Me5, N2S2 = N,N'-dimethyl-3,6-diazanonane-1,8-dithiolate) were prepared by self-assembly of dimer [N2S2Fe]2 with mononuclear precursor [Cp*Ru(MeCN)3][PF6] or [Cp*Co(MeCN)3][PF6]2 in the presence of CHCl3 as a chloride donor. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit obviously different redox behaviors investigated by cyclic voltammetry and spin density distributions supported by DFT calculations. Notably, iron-cobalt complex 3 possesses versatile reactivities that cannot be achieved for complex 2. In the presence of CoCp2, complex 3 can undergo one-electron reduction to generate a stable formally CoIIFeII complex [Cp*CoN2S2FeCl] (4). Besides, the terminal chloride on the iron center in 3 can be removed by dehalogenation agent AgPF6 or exchanged with azide to afford the corresponding complexes [Cp*Co(MeCN)N2S2Fe(MeCN)][PF6]2 (5) and [Cp*Co(MeCN)N2S2Fe(N3)][PF6] (6). In addition, complexes 2, 3 and 4 show distinct catalytic reactivity toward the disproportionation of hydrazine into ammonia. These results may be helpful to understand the vital role of the heterometal in some catalytic transformations promoted by heteromultinuclear complexes.

Maintaining a residual disinfectant/oxidant (e.g., chlorine and chlorine dioxide), is a generally used strategy to control microbial contaminants and bacterial regrowth in distribution systems. Secondarily oxidant, such as hypobromous acid (HOBr), can be formed during chlorination of bromide-containing waters. The decay of oxidants and formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) due to the interaction between oxidants and selected metal oxides were studied. Selected metal oxides generally enhanced the decay of these halogen-containing oxidants via three pathways: (1) catalytic disproportionation to yield an oxidized form of halogen (i.e., halate) and reduced form (halide for chlorine and bromine or chlorite for chlorine dioxide), (2) oxygen formation, and (3) oxidation of a metal in a reduced form (e.g., cuprous oxide) to a higher oxidation state. Cupric oxide (CuO) and nickel oxide (NiO) showed significantly strong abilities for the first pathway, and oxygen formation was a side reaction. Cuprous oxide can react with oxidants via the third pathway, while goethite was not involved in these reactions. The ability of CuO on catalytic disproportionation of HOBr remained stable up to four cycles. In chlorination process, bromate formation tends to be important (exceeding 10 µg/L) when initial bromide concentration is above 400 µg/L in the presence of dissolved organic matter. Increasing initial bromide concentrations increased the formation of DBPs and calculated cytotoxicity, and the maximum was observed at pH 8.6 during chlorination process. Therefore, the possible disinfectant loss and DBP formation should be carefully considered in drinking water distribution systems.

Algal organic matter (AOM), including extracellular organic matter (EOM) and intracellular organic matter (IOM) from algal blooms, is widely accepted as essential precursors of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). This study evaluated the effect of ozonation or ozone combined with activated carbon (O3-AC) treatment on characteristic alternation and DBP formation with subsequent chlorination of Chlorella sp.. The effects of pH and bromide concentration on DBP formation by ozonation or O3-AC treatment were also investigated. Results showed that the potential formation of DBPs might be attributed to ozonation, but these DBP precursors could be further removed by activated carbon (AC) treatment. Moreover, the formation of target DBPs was controlled at acidic pH by alleviating the reactions between chlorine and AOM. Besides, the bromide substitution factor (BSF) value of trihalomethanes (THMs) from EOM and IOM remained constant after AC treatment. However, THM precursors could be significantly decreased by AC treatment. The above results indicated that O3-AC was a feasible treatment method for algal-impacted water.

The catalytic hydrogenation of halonitroarenes to haloanilines is a green and sustainable process for the production of key nitrogen-containing intermediates in fine chemical industry. Chemoselective hydrogenation poses a significant challenge, which requires the rational design of the catalysts with proper hydrogenation ability for nitro group and simultaneously preventing dehalogenation of halogen group. Herein, a highly effective Rh@Al2O3@C single-atom catalyst (SAC) was developed for the hydrogenation of m-chloronitrobenzene (m-CNB) to m-chloroaniline (m-CAN), through an in-situ grafting of metal during the assembly of MIL-53 (Al), followed by confined pyrolysis. Extensive characterizations reveal an exquisite structure of the Rh@Al2O3@C, containing atomically dispersed Rh sites onto Al2O3 confined by the amorphous carbon. The five-coordinated aluminum (AlV) species are essential for achieving the atomic dispersion of Rh atoms, providing the unsaturated coordinative sites for metal. Compared to the benchmark Rh/γ-Al2O3 and Rh/C nanocatalysts, the Rh@Al2O3@C SAC affords an excellent turnover frequency of 2317 molm-CNB·molRh–1·h–1, the highest value to date in heterogeneous catalyst systems for the hydrogenation of m-CNB at 313 K and 20 bar H2, together with a sustained selectivity to m-CAN (~98%) during five consecutive runs. The superior catalytic performance of the Rh@Al2O3@C is attributed to a proper modulation of electronic structure of hydrogenation metal by forming SAC, together with an enhanced accessibility of acid function sites.

An electrochemical transient iodination and coupling reaction has been designed for constructing selenylated 4-anilinocoumarins via the domino reactions of 4-anilinocoumarins and diorganyl diselenides under base-, chemical oxidant- and external electrolyte-free conditions.

In this work, we report a family of co-halogenated two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) based on phenethylammonium lead halogen ((PEA)2Pb(Cl/Br)4) in which the organic cation-site (PEA) is substituted with halogen at the para-site, namely the formation of 4-halophenethylamine (X-p-PEA) (X = Cl, Br; p: para-site). The organic cations are regulated by introducing halogen ions at the para-site of the benzene ring to promote the structural distortion of the lead halide octahedral inorganic layer. Furthermore, (X-p-PEA) causes a shift in the energy band distribution of 2DHPs. In this case, the photoluminescence competition of free excitons (FEs) and self-trapped excitons (STEs) changes the microscopic relaxation process of excitons. In addition, we found that (Br-p-PEA) can increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). At the same time, we regulate the halogen-site of perovskites from lead-chloride perovskites (LCPs) to lead bromine perovskites (LBPs), achieving emission from white light to blue light. Therefore, the co-halogenation regulation strategy of organic cation-site and halogen-site can effectively regulate the photoluminescence wavelength and improve the PLQY. This is of great significance for the development of perovskite materials with specific optoelectronic applications.

Devising new versatile catalytic systems for the efficient removal of chlorinated environmental pollutants from water has enormous implications for the environment and human health. By combining the advantages of both electrochemistry and nanotechnology, here we report a conceptually new, general approach of electrochemical-driven nanoparticulate catalysis for highly efficient dehalogenation of organic chlorides. By implementing this strategy, a continuous-flow removal of 4-chlorophenol was rapidly achieved with 100% of dechlorination efficiency within 120 min, and importantly, the dechlorination product phenol could further undergo hydrogenation reaction to completely transform into the mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, significantly better than any reported catalytic methods. The essence of activation mechanism was attributed to the electric field-driven nanoparticles for activating the electrogenerated H2 to make numerous reactive species (e.g., atomic hydrogen) and for promoting direct electron transfer on the particles surface, thereby efficiently enabling their fast reactions with the adjacent pollutants. By conducting cyclic voltammetry and atomic-hydrogen quenching investigations, we first showed the direct and indirect reduction of chlorinated environmental pollutants in the voltammogram and provided a new evidence for the presence of these two mechanisms in the dehalogenation process. This work provides the first insight into electrochemical-driven nanoparticulate catalysis for dehalogenation of chlorinated environmental pollutants, showing a promising application for the remediation of these contaminants in water.

Processing of end-of-life products (EoL) containing rare earth elements (REE) has gained increasing importance in recent years with the aim of avoiding supply risks. In addition, circular economy renders complete recirculation of technology metals mandatory. Fluorescent lamp wastes are an important source for REE recovery since they contain significant amounts, up to 55 wt%, of Y and Eu in red phosphors. For these purposes, solid-state chlorination (SSC) is an economically attractive alternative to wet acid leaching treatment, which profits from a considerable reduction of chemicals consumption and process costs. Chlorination takes place with dry HCl(g) produced from thermal decomposition of NH4Cl(s), not only converting the REE content of the Hg-free phosphor waste into water soluble REE metal chlorides, but also avoiding the implications of aqueous complex chemistry of REE. To establish an industrial process viable on a commercial scale, the SSC process has been optimized by (i) using a design of experiment (DOE) varying temperature, residence time, and gNH4Cl/gsolid ratio and (ii) improved leaching of the chlorinated metals with an organic mixture selective for REE. As a result, 95.7% of the Y and 92.2% of the Eu were selectively recovered at 295.9 °C, 67 min and a ratio of 1.27 gNH4Cl/gsolid, followed by quantitative selective leaching of the REE. Owed to its low chemicals consumption and operation costs, the current process allows for valorizing lamp waste even when raw material prices are low.

Highlights • Mixtures of 29 halogenated POPs were reconstructed based on human blood levels. • In vitro assays permitted to evaluate DNT effects in human iPSC-derived NSCs. • POPs at human blood levels increased proliferating NSCs and decreased synapses. • Mathematical modelling showed that synaptogenesis was the most sensitive DNT endpoint. • Data support a possible link between POPs and neurodevelopmental disorders., Halogenated persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFASs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are known to cause cancer, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and interfere with reproduction and development. Concerns have been raised about the impact of POPs upon brain development and possibly neurodevelopmental disorders. The developing brain is a particularly vulnerable organ due to dynamic and complex neurodevelopmental processes occurring early in life. However, very few studies have reported on the effects of POP mixtures at human relevant exposures, and their impact on key neurodevelopmental processes using human in vitro test systems. Aiming to reduce this knowledge gap, we exposed mixed neuronal/glial cultures differentiated from neural stem cells (NSCs) derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) to reconstructed mixtures of 29 different POPs using concentrations comparable to Scandinavian human blood levels. Effects of the POP mixtures on neuronal proliferation, differentiation and synaptogenesis were evaluated using in vitro assays anchored to common key events identified in the existing developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) adverse outcome pathways (AOPs). The present study showed that mixtures of POPs (in particular brominated and chlorinated compounds) at human relevant concentrations increased proliferation of NSCs and decreased synapse number. Based on a mathematical modelling, synaptogenesis and neurite outgrowth seem to be the most sensitive DNT in vitro endpoints. Our results indicate that prenatal exposure to POPs may affect human brain development, potentially contributing to recently observed learning and memory deficits in children.

Water contamination because of dyeing industry is the matter of environmental chaoes since enormous amount of effluent is released into the water bodies. Particularly, the halogenated carbazoles released as by products either by direct halogenation of carbazole or through a condensation reaction of a halogen-containing precursor compound are of major threat to ecosystem. When directly exposed, they cause skin irritation and other genetic disorders which makes them topic of medical importance. Here two carbazole derivatives 2-bromo-9H carbazole and 2,7 dibromo-9H carbazole are chosen for theoretical investigation of their structural property to understand their reactivity through geometry optimization, orbital occupancy via electron localization assessment, electrostatic properties and molecular descriptors using density functional theory. Further, the compounds are subjected to docking studies to find their binding affinity towards human serum albumin, a 66.5 kDa protein synthesized in liver.

Antibiotics are ubiquitous in wastewater and surface water and their presence is of grave concern. Chlorination, an important disinfection process used in wastewater treatment plants and waterworks, causes antibiotics to be degraded. However, interactions of antibiotics with chlorine result in the generation of multiple transformation products (TPs). TPs may be more toxic than the parent compounds, but their structures, yields and ecotoxicity remain to be ascertained in most cases. This study examined the degradation by chlorine of two typical macrolide (MLs) antibiotics, erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX), and identified the TPs formed as a result of ERY and ROX chlorination. The ecotoxicity of ERY, ROX and their TPs was evaluated using a combination of bioassay and ECOSAR prediction. The degradation of ERY and ROX followed pseudo-first-order kinetic at the molar ratio of FAC to MLs of 10:1, and the degradation kinetic rate depends on pH values. Six TPs of ERY including three chlorinated TPs, and six TPs of ROX including two chlorinated TPs were identified. The tertiary N of the desosamine moiety of ERY and ROX was determined to be the main reactive site. Demethylation and chlorine substitution at the reactive site are the main degradation pathways of ERY and ROX. ECOSAR results showed that the chlorinated byproducts of ERY TP578, TP542 and TP528, and the reduced hydroxylation products of ROX TP851 exhibited higher ecotoxicity than their parent compounds. However, algae growth inhibition assays indicated that the overall ecotoxicity of the chlorinated ERY or ROX mixture was lower than that of ERY or ROX prior to chlorination. This may be attributed to the removal of the parent compound and lower yields of toxic substances. While the yields of the toxic TPs may be low, their accumulation and combined effects of the TPs and other co-occurring pollutants should be examined further.

A mild reaction for DNA-compatible, palladium promoted Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of potassium Boc-protected aminomethyltrifluoroborate with DNA-conjugated aryl bromides has been developed efficiently. This novel DNA encoded chemistry reaction proceeded well with a wide range of functional group tolerance, including aryl bromides and heteroaryl bromides. Further, the utility our DNA conjugated aminomethylated arene products is demonstrated by reaction with various types of reagents (including amide formation with carboxylic acids, alkylation with aldehydes, and carbamoylation with amines) as would be desired for the production of a DNA encoded library.

Li–S batteries have aroused intense interests as one of the most promising high-energy-density storage technology. However, the complex undesired shuttle effect induced by dissolution and diffusion of lithium polysulfide intermediates remains the major setback of this technology. Chemical modification of carbon cathode through heteroatom-doping is widely accepted as an effective method to inhibit the shuttle effect in Li-S battery cathode. Herein, using first principle calculations, we systematically examined the interaction between halogenated graphene and lithium polysulfide species. It is found that the halogen dopants (F, Cl, Br, I) significantly modify the local electronic structure of adsorption site and further induce a polarization to trap the polysulfides. Interestingly, a concave curve is observed from F to I for lithium polysulfide adsorption rather than a linear relation. The exceptions demonstrated from iodine dopant is carefully analyzed and attributed to its unique charge state. Moreover, boron as second dopant further strengthens the interaction between halogenated graphene and polysulfide molecule. Based on halogenation strategy, lithium polysulfide/cathode interactions are tuned in a wide range, which can also be of great importance to accelerate redox reaction in Li-S battery. Overall, an effective method by halogenation is verified to regulate the adsorption of lithium polysulfide and also enhance the reaction kinetics of the Li-S battery system.

The pregnane X receptor (PXR) has been established to induce chemoresistance and metabolic diseases. Ochratoxin A (OTA), a mycotoxin, decreases the expression of PXR protein in human primary hepatocytes. OTA is chlorinated and has a methylated lactone ring. Both structures are associated with OTA toxicity. The study was to test the hypothesis that structural modifications differentially impact PXR blocking activity over cytotoxicity. To test this hypothesis, OTA-M and OTA-Cl/M were synthesized. OTA-M lacked the methyl group of the lactone-ring, whereas OTA-Cl/M had neither the methyl group nor the chlorine atom. The blocking activity of PXR activation was determined in a stable cell line, harboring both PXR (coding sequence) and its luciferase element reporter. OTA-Cl/M showed the highest blocking activity, followed by OTA-M and OTA. OTA-Cl/M was 60 times as potent as the common PXR blocker ketoconazole based on calculated IC(50) values. OTA-Cl/M decreased by 90% the expression of PXR protein and was the least cytotoxic among the tested compounds. Molecular docking identified that OTA and its derivatives interacted with different sets of residues in PXR, providing a molecular basis for selectivity. Excessive activation of PXR has been implicated in chemoresistance and metabolic diseases. Downregulation of PXR protein expression likely delivers an effective mechanism against structurally diverse PXR agonists.

Chlorination disinfection has been widely used to kill the pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater sludge during the special Covid-19 period, but sludge chlorination might cause the generation of harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs). In this work, the transformation of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and mechanisms of Cl-DBPs generation during sludge disinfection by sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) were investigated using multispectral analysis in combination with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). The microorganism Escherichia coli (E. coli) was effectively inactivated by active chlorine generated from NaClO. However, a high diversity of Cl-DBPs were produced with the addition of NaClO into sludge, causing the increase of acute toxicity on Q67 luminous bacteria of chlorinated EPS. A variety of N-containing molecular formulas were produced after chlorination, but N-containing DBPs were not detected, which might be the indicative of the dissociation of -NH2 groups after Cl-DBPs generated. Additionally, the release of N-containing compounds was increased in alkaline environment caused by NaClO addition, resulted in more Cl-DBPs generation via nucleophilic substitutions. Whereas, less N-compounds and Cl-DBPs were detected after EPS chlorination under acidic environment, leading to lower cell cytotoxicity. Therefore, N-containing compounds of lignin derivatives in sludge were the major Cl-DBPs precursors, and acidic environment could control the release of N-compounds by eliminating the dissociation of functional groups in lignin derivatives, consequently reducing the generation and cytotoxicity of Cl-DBPs. This study highlights the importance to control the alkalinity of sludge to reduce Cl-DBPs generation prior to chlorination disinfection process, and ensure the safety of subsequential disposal for wastewater sludge.

Nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs), such as halocetamides (HAcAms), haloacetonitriles (HANs) and halonitromethanes (HNMs), are emerging DBPs in drinking water. They are more toxic than currently regulated DBPs, attracting more attention to their toxic effects and mechanism. Halogenated compounds are widely discovered in nature, and many of them exhibit biological activities, such as an important chlorinated natural product salinosporamide A serving as a potential anticancer agent. Compared with bromination, iodination and fluorination, chlorination is the mainly important modification. To shed light on the mechanism of SAM-dependent chlorinases, a recombinant chlorinase ClA1 was expressed in Escherichia coli and further purified for crystallization and X-ray diffraction experiments. The flake crystals of ClA1 were able to diffract to a resolution of 1.85 A. The crystals belonged to space group R3, with unit-cell parameters α = β = 90.0°, γ = 120.0°. By determining the structure of ClA1, it is revealed that the side chain of Arg242 in ClA1 may have contacts with the L-Met. However, in SalL the equivalent Arg243’s side chain is far from L-Met. Considering the ClA1 and SalL are from different environments and their enzyme kinetics are quite different, it is suggested that the side chain conformation differences of the conserved arginine are possibly related with the enzyme activity differences of the two chlorinases.

The dehalogenation of gaseous chlorobenzene (CB) to useful intermediates at ambient temperature is desirable. In this study, gaseous CB was dehalogenated to useful intermediates using an electrochemically generated homogeneous low-valent electron mediator in an electroscrubbing column at ambient temperature. A homogenous electron mediator [Ni(I)(CN)4]3− (Ni(I) low-valent) was generated at the cathodic half-cell using a membrane-divided electrolytic cell and quantified by oxidation/reduction potential (ORP) variations with a potentiometric titration. CB removal according to a mediated electrocatalytic reduction (MER) process, was confirmed by the change in electrogenerated Ni(I) from 4.2 mM to 2.8 mM during the degradation of CB. A Fourier transform infrared gas analyzer and chlorine sensor showed that 100% of 15 ppm CB at a 0.2 L min−1 flow rate had been removed by the MER process with CO2 as the gaseous product. At the same time, the phenoxide anion was found in the resulting solutions, which is a starting material in many pharmaceutical industries. The developed method and possible generation of a homogenous electron mediator on CB dehalogenation to useful intermediates at ambient temperature is a practical technology.

Novel functionalized polysulfone with high local density of sulfonic acid groups, N,N-bis(sulfopropyl)aminyl-4-phenyl polysulfone or O,O′-bis(sulfopropyl)resorcinol-5-yl-4-phenyl polysulfone (PSF-X-C3H6SO3H, X = N or O) are synthesized. These polymers are synthesized by bromination of polysulfone followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction to graft the aminophenyl groups and the dimethoxyphenyl groups onto the polymeric backbone, followed by introduction of the sulfopropyl groups via sultone ring-opening reaction. In addition, the composite membrane of PSF-O-C3H6SO3H and PSF-N-C3H6SO3H is also synthesized for comparison. The maximum proton conductivity of composite PSF-O-C3H6SO3H and PSF-N-C3H6SO3H reaches 46.66 mS cm−1 at 95 °C and 90% RH, higher than PSF-O-C3H6SO3H (42.06 mS cm−1) and PSF-N-C3H6SO3H (38.76 mS cm−1). Meanwhile, the composite exhibits compromised water uptake and swelling ratio, and low methanol permeability. The excellent overall performance of the composite is attributed to phase-separation between the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic subphases, and the hydrogen-bonding network developed in the hydrophilic subphases.

4-Bromo-3-methylanisole is mainly used to synthesize black fluorane dye (2-anilino-3-methyl-6-dibutylaminofluorane, ODB-2), which is one of the most important heat and pressure-sensitive dyes in the manufacture of thermal papers. Compared to the industrial heterogeneous batch process, a continuous homogeneous bromination technology in a modular microreaction system has been developed, and 4-bromo-3-methylanisole has been successfully prepared through high-selective mono-bromination of 3-methylanisole with Br2 solution in CHCl3. In optimal conditions, the content of bis-brominated byproducts can be controlled less than 0.5%, which is superior to the industrial standard with 99.5% 3-methylanisole conversion at very short residence time and mild reaction temperature. Perchloroethene (PCE) is a hazardous and persistent groundwater pollutant. Both treatment with nanoscaled zero-valent iron (nZVI) and biological degradation by bacteria have downsides. Distribution of nZVI underground is difficult and a high percentage of injected nZVI is consumed by anaerobic corrosion, forming H2 rather than being available for PCE dechlorination. On the other hand, microbial PCE degradation can suffer from the absence of H2. This can cause the accumulation of the hazardous metabolites cis-1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) or vinylchloride (VC). The combination of chemical and biological PCE degradation is a promising approach to overcome the disadvantages of each method alone. In this lysimeter study, artificial aquifers were created to test the influence of nZVI on anaerobic microbial PCE dechlorination by a commercially available culture containing Dehalococcoides spp. under field-like conditions. The effect of the combined treatment was investigated with molasses as an additional electron source and after cessation of molasses addition. The combination of nZVI and the Dehalococcoides spp. containing culture led to a PCE discharge in the lysimeter outflow that was 4.7 times smaller than that with nZVI and 1.6 times smaller than with bacterial treatment. Moreover, fully dechlorinated end-products showed an 11-fold increase compared to nZVI and a 4.2-fold increase compared to the microbial culture. The addition of nZVI to the microbial culture also decreased the accumulation of hazardous metabolites by 1.7 (cis-DCE) and 1.2 fold (VC). The stimulatory effect of nZVI on microbial degradation was most obvious after the addition of molasses was stopped.

Herein, a series of carbazolyl cyanobenzene (CCB)-based organic photocatalysts with a broad range of photoredox capabilities were designed and synthesized, allowing precise control of the photocatalytic reactivity for the controllable reduction of aryl halides via a metal-free process. The screened-out CCB (5CzBN), a metal-free, low-cost, scalable and sustainable photocatalyst with both strong oxidative and reductive ability, exhibits superior performance for both dehalogenation and C C bond-forming arylation reactions.

Introduction The increase in expression of tryptophan 2, 3-dioxygenases (TDO) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) have been reported as potential tumor biomarkers. TDO and IDO are enzymes that catalyze the first and rate-limiting step of the kynurenine pathway. Positron emitting tomography (PET) tracers investigating the kynurenine pathway may allow for the detection of different disease pathologies in vivo including cancer. However, current PET tracers being developed for TDO and IDO have suffered from either multi-step low yielding syntheses or de-fluorination of the tracer in vivo. Results TDO inhibitors based on 6-fluoroindole with C3 substituents are a class of small molecules that have been shown to bind to TDO effectively, restore tryptophan concentration and decrease the production of immunosuppressive metabolites. The compound 6-fluoro-3-(pyridine-3-yl)-1H-indole has been reported to have high in vitro affinity for TDO. Herein we report the fully automated radiosynthesis of 6-[18F]fluoro-3-(pyridine-3-yl)-1H-indole [18F]4 using a copper-mediated nucleophilic 18F-fluorination resulting in a non-corrected yield of 5 to 6% of the tracer with a radiochemical purity of >99% after 4 h. Small animal dynamic PET/CT imaging of [18F]4 intravenously injected into normal C57BL/6 mice revealed rapid accumulation in heart and brain, reaching maximum occupancy in heart (10.9% ID/g) and brain (8.1% ID/g) at 1.75 min and 2.25 min, respectively. Furthermore, these in vivo studies revealed no de-fluorination of the tracer, as evidence by the absence of [18F]fluoride accumulation in bone. Conclusion In vitro studies demonstrate that 4 has good affinity for hTDO and the radiolabeled analogue [18F]4 can be synthesized with suitable radiochemical yields. [18F]4 demonstrates good uptake in the brain and the radiolabeled compound shows no de-fluorination in vivo in C57BL/6 mice.

Haloacid dehalogenases catalyse the cleavage of carbon − halogen bonds in halogenated organic acids. These enzymes are of high interest due to their potential applications in bioremediation and in synthesis of various industrial products. The efficiency of dehalogenases in various applications can be enhanced, provided that their molecular catalytic mechanisms are fully understood. Herein, we review the current understanding of enzymatic haloacid dehalogenation mechanisms and the important amino acid residues that are necessary for the enzyme’s catalysis, with special emphasis on haloacid dehalogenases produced by Rhizobium sp.

Palladium-catalyzed highly meta-selective C H iodination of phenylacetic acid, benzylphosphonate and benzylsulfonate scaffolds with molecular I2 is developed using a pyridine-type template. The practical ester linkages enable the directing template easily installed and readily removed. The substrate scope is broad, and alkyl, methoxyl, trifluomethyl, and halo substituents are compatible with this reaction. Further transformations of ibuprofen iodide intermediates by Pd-catalyzed C C and C–heteroatom bond formation illustrate the broad utility of this method.

We describe a catalyst-free 1,2-trans-dihalogenation of alkynes with an unprecedented substrate scope and exclusive regio- and stereoselectivity. This versatile dihalogenation system—a combination of NX(1)S electrophile and alkali metal halide (MX(2)) in acetic acid—is applicable for diverse categories of alkynes (electron-rich or poor alkynes, internal and terminal alkynes, or heteroatoms such as O-, N-, S-substituted alkynes). The hydrogen bonding donor solvent acetic acid is essential for the in-situ generation of X(1)X(2) electrophile, including ICl, IBr, BrCl, I(2,) and Br(2).

Summary Privileged chiral catalyst scaffolds are highly useful in chemical synthesis such as drug preparation. Substituted phenol ligands are among the most frequently used scaffolds. However, the preparation of chiral phenol ligands commonly involves tedious synthetic procedures. Herein, we describe a facile strategy to prepare potent chiral bisphenols (BPOLs) through the desymmetrizing asymmetric ortho-halogenation. Both theoretical and experimental studies were conducted in order to shed light on the mechanistic picture. The halogen handles in the BPOL products are manipulated to yield unsymmetrical chiral BPOL ligands, which are potential privileged catalyst scaffolds and have been applied in other asymmetric catalytic reactions.

This study investigated the speciation of halogen-specific total organic halogen and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) upon chlorination of natural organic matter (NOM) in the presence of iopamidol and bromide (Br−). Experiments were conducted with low bromide source waters with different NOM characteristics from Northeast Ohio, USA and varied spiked levels of bromide (2–30 μmol/L) and iopamidol (1–5 μmol/L). Iopamidol was found to be a direct precursor to trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid formation, and in the presence of Br− favored brominated analogs. The concentration and speciation of DBPs formed were impacted by iopamidol and bromide concentrations, as well as the presence of NOM. As iopamidol increased the concentration of iodinated DBPs (iodo-DBPs) and THMs increased. However, as Br− concentrations increased, the concentrations of non-brominated iodo- and chloro-DBPs decreased while brominated-DBPs increased. Regardless of the concentration of either iopamidol or bromide, bromochloroiodomethane (CHBrClI) was the most predominant iodo-DBP formed except at the lowest bromide concentration studied. At relevant concentrations of iopamidol (1 μmol/L) and bromide (2 μmol/L), significant quantities of highly toxic iodinated and brominated DBPs were formed. However, the rapid oxidation and incorporation of bromide appear to inhibit iodo-DBP formation under conditions relevant to drinking water treatment.

Acceptor halogenation is an excellent modification method for modulating molecular energy levels, improving optical absorption, shortening the intermolecular packing distance thus ameliorating morphologies and achieving effective exciton dissociation and charge transfer of organic photovoltaic device. In this work, F, Cl and Br terminated ITIC small molecule acceptor (SMA) derivatives (IT-2F, IT-2Cl and IT-2Br) are designed and synthesized to compare the halogen substitution effect. Among these three acceptors, IT-2F based PSCs devices show the highest power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) around 12.08%, but Br terminated ITIC show downshifted LUMO energy level. Brominated ITIC show comparable PCEs with Cl and F terminated compound, and moreover chlorinated and brominated ITIC show low synthesis cost and easy purification than fluorinated materials, which may be favorable for future commercialization.

In this work, we explore the ability of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles to increase the compatibility of hydrophilic starch with hydrophobic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL). Morphological analysis demonstrated that lower contents of POSS (0.5 and 1 wt%) enhances the compatibility of the system. However, higher inclusion of POSS results in the formation of aggregates and thus a lower level of compatibility. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that PCL acts as an intermediate between PLA and starch, and that POSS is primarily localized within the PLA and PCL phases. Based on differential scanning calorimetry, PLA's crystallinity increases from 22.9% to 31.6% upon adding a very low content of POSS (0.5 wt%). However, the PCL's crystallinity is slightly hampered due to formation of these PLA crystallites. In contrast with the crystallization behavior and based on the thermal degradation kinetics, we found the composite's thermal stability is greatly increased when moderate to high contents (3 and 5 wt%) of POSS are utilized. Dynamic mechanical analysis results also confirmed good POSS dispersion within the matrix, especially at lower contents. In conclusion, POSS serves as an efficient compatibilizer for PLA/starch/PCL systems with improved thermal properties.

Dehalogenases continue to garner interest of the scientific community due to their potential applications in bioremediation of halogen-contaminated environment and in synthesis of various industrially relevant products. Example of such enzymes is DehL, an L-2-haloacid dehalogenase (EC 3.8.1.2) from Rhizobium sp. RC1 that catalyses the specific cleavage of halide ion from L-2-halocarboxylic acids to produce the corresponding D-2-hydroxycarboxylic acids. Recently, the catalytic residues of DehL have been identified and its catalytic mechanism has been fully elucidated. However, the enantiospecificity determinants of the enzyme remain unclear. This information alongside a well-defined catalytic mechanism are required for rational engineering of DehL for substrate enantiospecificity. Therefore, using quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics and molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area calculations, the current study theoretically investigated the molecular basis of DehL enantiospecificity. The study found that R51L mutation cancelled out the dehalogenation activity of DehL towards it natural substrate, L-2-chloropropionate. The M48R mutation, however introduced a new activity towards D-2-chloropropionate, conveying the possibility of inverting the enantiospecificity of DehL from L-to d-enantiomer with a minimum of two simultaneous mutations. The findings presented here will play important role in the rational design of DehL dehalogenase for improving substrate utility.

Polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) were monitored in various foods from terrestrial and aquatic animal origin (>850 samples), collected in the Netherlands between 2009 and 2014. The terrestrial samples included meat/fat from 7 animal species (including bovines, pigs, broilers and sheep), bovine milk and hen eggs. Dominant PBDE congeners in these samples were BDE-47, -99, -100, -153 and -183. The meat/fat generally contained the highest ∑PBDE concentrations compared to eggs and milk, with meat from deer, horse and sheep containing the highest concentrations. Generally declining ∑PBDE concentrations were observed between 2009 and 2014, however, this was only significant in pig meat and hen's eggs. The aquatic samples included fillets from 18 species (including herring, haddock and salmon), brown crab parts, shrimp and mussels, and the highest ∑PBDE concentrations were seen in body parts of brown crab, herring, mackerel, salmon and sea bass (on wet weight basis). Patterns generally contained more congeners (i.e., BDE-28, -49 and -66) additional to the aforementioned congeners found in terrestrial samples. Herring, sea bass and brown crab (body parts) contained among the highest PBDE concentrations. TBBPA was only detected in 3 individual samples (bovine and broiler meat and haddock), while α-HBCDD was the dominant diastereomer detected in several terrestrial and aquatic samples. When detected, TBBPA and HBCDD concentrations were generally in the same order as ∑PBDE concentrations in the same sample types.

Chlorine-disinfected sewage effluents are typically dechlorinated by using NaHSO3, Na2SO3, or Na2S2O3, as chlorine residual could be harmful to aquatic organisms upon discharge of sewage effluents into receiving marine water. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of dechlorination-related factors on the developmental toxicity of a chlorinated saline primary sewage effluent, via direct exposure of the embryos of a marine polychaete to the effluent. The results showed that dechlorination ratio (i.e., the ratio of the dosed amount to the requisite stoichiometric amount of a dechlorination agent) and mixing condition were critical factors affecting the toxicity of the effluent. The toxicity of the effluent under insufficient dechlorination conditions was mainly caused by residual chlorine, especially monochloramine. Although the three dechlorination agents generally performed similarly, dechlorination with Na2S2O3 required a more vigorous mixing condition than that with NaHSO3 or Na2SO3, as the relatively high density of Na2S2O3 might affect the mixing efficiency. Under insufficient mixing conditions, a prolonged dechlorination time was beneficial to achieving complete dechlorination and thus lowered the toxicity of the effluent. Moreover, because disinfection byproducts (DBPs) may have chronic effects on aquatic organisms, the developmental toxicity of the DBP mixtures in the chlorinated effluent in different dechlorination scenarios was also evaluated. The results indicated that increasing the dechlorination ratio reduced the developmental toxicity of the DBP mixture in the chlorinated saline sewage effluent, which might be ascribed to the decrease of the levels of overall brominated and iodinated DBPs; the dechlorination agent (NaHSO3 or Na2S2O3) might act as a nucleophile in the nucleophilic substitution and cause the substitution of bromine or iodine atoms in brominated and iodinated DBPs. The results from this study might aid in the design and operation of dechlorination facilities in sewage treatment plants.

Ballast water managements systems (BWMS) installed on vessels may use active substances to inactivate organisms. This paper provides new insights in the global issue of noxious disinfection by-products (DBP) discharge with ballast water, and the related risk assessment for human health. The GESAMP ballast water working group plays a role in the certification process of BWMS that make use of active substances evaluating potential negative effects. We analyzed all BWMS that passed GESAMP final approval over a decade until 2017 providing an overview of chemicals in the discharged ballast water generated by BWMS. We used these data to calculate the chemical load humans may be exposed to for two different commercial ports (Koper, Slovenia and Hamburg, Germany). None of the chemicals in this study reached levels of concern that would indicate a risk for humans after exposure to chemicals present in the discharged ballast water. Nevertheless, although this exposure only adds to a lesser degree to the overall exposure to disinfection by-products, some chemicals, such as tribromomethane, have carcinogenic properties. In case studies we show which chemicals have the largest contribution to the aggregated exposure of humans. We note that tribromomethane, despite its low bio-concentration factor (BCF), may accumulate in fat, when fish are continuously exposed to DBPs during low-level chlorination. Since this figure would give a higher value for the internal dose for tribromomethane from seafood consumption than the current BCF in the GISIS database, the calculated value may underestimate the contribution of tribromomethane, and possibly also other DBPs.
