Abstract

The production of Z 0 bosons in the reaction ep→eZ 0 p (*) , where p (*) stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496pb -1 of integrated luminosity. The Z 0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on η max max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z 0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep→eZ 0 p (*) was measured to be σ(ep→eZ 0 p (*) )=0.13±0.06(stat.)±0.01(syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. This is the first measurement of Z 0 production in ep collisions. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The production of the excited charm mesons D 1 (2420) and D2*(2460) in ep collisions has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373pb -1 . The masses of the neutral and charged states, the widths of the neutral states, and the helicity parameter of D 1 (2420) 0 were determined and compared with other measurements and with theoretical expectations. The measured helicity parameter of the D10 allows for some mixing of S- and D-waves in its decay to D *± π Π . The result is also consistent with a pure D-wave decay. Ratios of branching fractions of the two decay modes of the D2*(2460)0 and D2*(2460)± states were measured and compared with previous measurements. The fractions of charm quarks hadronising into D 1 and D2* were measured and are consistent with those obtained in e + e - annihilations. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The exclusive photoproduction reaction γ p → ϒ ( 1 S ) p has been studied with the ZEUS detector in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb − 1 . The measurement covers the kinematic range 60 W 220 GeV and Q 2 1 GeV 2 , where W is the photon–proton centre-of-mass energy and Q 2 is the photon virtuality. The exponential slope, b, of the t dependence of the cross section, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, has been measured, yielding b = 4.3 − 1.3 + 2.0 ( stat . ) − 0.6 + 0.5 ( syst . ) GeV − 2 . This constitutes the first measurement of the t dependence of the γ p → ϒ ( 1 S ) p cross section.

Abstract

The cross sections for charged and neutral current deep inelastic scattering in e + p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam have been measured using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The results, based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 23.8 pb−1 at s = 318 GeV , are given for both e + p charged current and neutral current deep inelastic scattering for both positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beam. Single differential cross sections are presented for the kinematic region Q 2 > 200 GeV 2 . The measured cross sections are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model. A fit to the data yields σ CC ( P e = − 1 ) = 7.4 ± 3.9 ( stat. ) ± 1.2 ( syst. ) pb , which is consistent within two standard deviations with the absence of right-handed charged currents in the Standard Model.

Abstract

The beauty production cross section for deep inelastic scattering events with at least one hard jet in the Breit frame together with a muon has been measured, for photon virtualities Q^2 > 2 GeV^2, with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosity of 72 pb^-1. The total visible cross section is sigma_b-bbar (ep -> e jet mu X) = 40.9 +- 5.7 (stat.) +6.0 -4.4 (syst.) pb. The next-to-leading order QCD prediction lies about 2.5 standard deviations below the data. The differential cross sections are in general consistent with the NLO QCD predictions; however at low values of Q^2, Bjorken x, and muon transverse momentum, and high values of jet transverse energy and muon pseudorapidity, the prediction is about two standard deviations below the data., 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

To fully exploit the HERA-II upgrade,the ZEUS experiment has installed a Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) using n-type, single-sided, silicon micro-strip sensors with capacitive charge division. The sensors have a readout pitch of 120 micrometers, with five intermediate strips (20 micrometer strip pitch). The designs of the silicon sensors and of the test structures used to verify the technological parameters, are presented. Results on the electrical measurements are discussed. A total of 1123 sensors with three different geometries have been produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. Irradiation tests with reactor neutrons and Co-60 photons have been performed for a small sample of sensors. The results on neutron irradiation (with a fluence of 1 x 10^{13} 1 MeV equivalent neutrons / cm^2) are well described by empirical formulae for bulk damage. The Co-60 photons (with doses up to 2.9 kGy) show the presence of generation currents in the SiO_2-Si interface, a large shift of the flatband voltage and a decrease of the hole mobility., Comment: 33 pages, 25 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in NIM A

Abstract

A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q 2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F2 and the total virtual photon-proton ( γ ∗ p ) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10−6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10−5, corresponding to a range in the γ ∗ p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented.

Abstract

We study the polarization with respect to the normal to the production plane for a very clean sample of 27217 Λ 0 / Λ 0 hyperons produced in 230 GeV/c π−Cu interactions. In general we find P(Λ 0 ) ≈ P( Λ 0 ap; 0 except for xF > 0, pT > 1GeV/c where P (Λ0) = −0.28±0.09(stat.)±0.02(syst.).

Abstract

In the CERN NA32 experiment a high-resolution silicon vertex detector and a purely topological approach were used to collect 557 events consistent with associated charm production, both decay vertices being observed. The pseudorapidity gap distribution appears to be nearly independent of the nature of the charmed hadrons. This distribution is reasonably consistent with the next-to-leading order QCD calculations. However the azimuthal-angle distribution is significantly broader than the above predictions.

Abstract

Using a high-resolution silicon vertex detector we have observed a very clean signal of 127 D∗+. After a careful study of the experimental resolution of our apparatus we have measured m( D ∗++ )−m( D 0 ) = 145.39±0.06±0.03 MeV . We have also obtained a 90% CL upper limit to γ(D∗+) of 131 keV.

Abstract

Data on the longitudinal and transverse shower profiles initiated by 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, and 100 GeV positive hadron beams are presented. They have been measured with a 6λ deep sampling hadronic calorimeter using 3.2 mm thick depleted uranium plates as absorber and 3.0 mm scintillator layers as active material. The scintillator is read out with wavelength shifter plates coupled to photomultipliers. The data are compared to Monte Carlo calculations, simulating both the development of hadronic cascades as well as detector effects.

Abstract

We study the energy resolution of two compensating sandwich calorimeters using scintillators as readout material and lead and uranium as absorber, respectively. By employing the technique of the two interleaved calorimeters we extract the contribution of sampling and intrinsic fluctuations. We find that the energy resolution for hadrons is dominated by sampling fluctuations in both cases.

Abstract

We have exposed a sandwich calorimeter, consisting of 3.3 mm thick uranium pnterleaved with 2.6 mm thick scintillator tiles, to positive and negative electrons and pions and to protons in the momentum range of 0.5 to 10 GeV/c. We find that e/h is about 1 above 3 GeV/c, but decreases significantly for lower momenta. This ratio is the same for positive and negative pions and also for pions and protons of the same kinetic energy.

Abstract

Four prototype modules following the same design as the ZEUS forward calorimeter (FCAL) modules have been constructed and tested with electrons, hadrons and muons in the momentum range of 1 to 100 GeV/ c . The main topics under investigation were: calibration, uniformity of response, noise, light yield, energy resolution and the electron to hadron response (e/h ratio). The result of the measurements is presented and the expected performance of the FCAL is discussed in the light of these results.

Abstract

We have observed four unambiguous decays of the charmed strange baryon Ξco in the NA32 experiment at CERN. Charge- coupled devices and silicon microstrip detectors were used to reconstruct the decay mode Ξ c o → pK − K ∗ (892) o seen in events produced by the interaction of 230 GeV/c negative poins and kaons on a copper target. We present the first measurement of the lifetime of the Ξco, together with a determination of its mass and production cross section. The resonant components of the Ξco decay are studied. We use our earlier measurement of the mass of the Ξc+ in the determination of the isospin mass splitting of the Ξc states.

Abstract

An experiment has been performed to search for associated hadronic production of charmed mesons, using a large-aperture forward magnetic spectrometer setup in a π− beam at the CERN SPS. A prompt electron trigger was used to select events containing a pair by charmed particles. D mesons have been identified by reconstruction of hadronic decay modes such as Kπ, Kππ. Data have been taken at 120, 175, and 200 GeV, The D D cross section measured at 175 200 GeV is σ( D D ) = (48 ± 15) μ b with a systematic uncertainty of ±50%. The energy dependence of the cross section is measured to be σ( D D ) [120 GeV )/σ( D D [175/200 GeV ] = 0.62 ± 0.34 .

A search for the S(1936) has been made in the invariant mass spectrum of pp-pairs produced inclusively in proton-beryllium interactions at 100 GeV incident momentum. No enhancement is observed, giving a 3 standard deviation upper limit on the cross section of 220 nb/nucleon for production of a narrow pp state around ≈ 1940 MeV in the x F range 0.18 x F

Abstract

Inclusive oo production has been studied in π−-Be interactions for 100 and 175 GeV incident momentum. An upper limit of 72 nb has been set for σ(π − Be → η c (2980) + X ) s BR (η c → oo) at 175 GeV . At both momenta the number of oo events is larger than expected for uncorrelated o pairs. A narrow width enhancement is observed at Moo≈2100 MeV with a 4 standard deviation significance.

Abstract

In the experiment NA11 at the CERN SPS the MC68000 based FAMP system has been succesfully implemented in a second stage trigger. It was used in a study of inclusive φ-meson production to select φ →K + K − decays by determining the charged K-meson trajectories and calculating the K + K − invariant mass. A trigger rate reduction by a factor of 25 and an increase in the number of recorded φ-decays per unit time by a factor of 8 has been achieved.

Abstract

We have observed a sample of 21 unambiguous decays of Ds mesons into KKπ hadronically produced in the NA11 and NA32 experiments at the CERN SPS using high resolution silicon microstrip detectors. We measure the mean lifetime and the mass of the Ds meson to be (3.3±0.61.0)x10−13 s and 1972.7 ± 1.5 ± 1.0 MeV/c2, respectively.

Abstract

We have built a sandwich calorimeter consisting of 10 mm thick lead plates and 2.5 mm thick scintillator sheets. The thickness ratio between lead and scintillator was optimized to achieve a good energy resolution for hadrons. We have exposed this calorimeter to electrons, hadrons and muons in the energy range between 3 and 75 GeV, obtaining an average energy resolution of 23% E for electrons and 44% E for hadrons. For energies above 10 GeV and after leakage corrections, the ratio of electron response to hardron response is 1.05.

Abstract

As a preparation for the ZEUS high resolution calorimeter, sampling calorimeters made from 3.2 mm plates of depleted uranium read out by plastic scintillator of 3 mm and 5 mm thickness have been built. The response of hadrons, electrons and muons has been measured in the energy range between 3 and 100 GeV. In agreement with predictions, the relative response of electrons and hadrons as well as the hadronic energy resolution depend strongly on the thickness of the plastic scintillator. For 3.2 mm depleted uranium and 3 mm thick scintillator we observe over the full energy range equal response for electrons and hadrons; a hadronic energy resolution of 34.5% E[ GeV ] is obtained. Results are given for the spatial resolution for electrons and hadrons. Finally, results from a lead scintillator calorimeter built as a prestudy before uranium plates were available are reported.

Abstract

The Kπ− system produced in the reaction Kp → K0π−p at 4.2 GeV/c is studied using high-statistics bubble-chamber data. The spin-parity structure is analysed as a function of the K0π− mass up to 1.52 GeV. Production of K∗(890) and K∗(1420) is observed in helicity-0 and helicity-1 states. Contributions of natural and unnatural parity exchange are present. Considerable S-wave production is observed over the whole mass region considered. We also study the t′ dependence of the K∗(890) and K∗(1420) amplitudes. A comparison of our results on K∗(890) production with the results of an analysis of charge-exchange K∗(890) production, allows the separation of I = 0 and I = 1 exchange amplitudes. Some qualitative remarks are made concerning K∗(1420) production.

Abstract

Evidence is given for the existence of a spin-5 boson resonance from the analysis of the reaction π − p→K + K − n at 62 GeV incident momentum. A simplified amplitude analysis with a Breit-Wigner ansatz leads to a mass 2307 ± 6 MeV and a width of 245 ± 20 MeV. The quantum numbers of the resonance are J P = 5 − , C = −1, and very probably I G = 1 + .

Abstract

In the CERN NA32 experiment a high-resolution silicon vertex detextor and a purely topological approach were used to investigate various decays of charmed particles. Branching ratios of the D 0 were determined from about 600 fully reconstructed decay vertices. 84 events had a D 0 decay vertex in addition to a fully reconstructed decay of the associated charmed particle. Using these events and the above branching ratios, we have determined branching fractions for 20 channels, including 8 new ones.

Abstract

A search has been made for the hadronic production of charmed baryons and mesons with a large aperture forward magnetic spectrometer using 150 GeV protons originating from the CERN-SPS. A prompt electron trigger was used as a signature for charm. Upper limits at 90% confidence level have been obtained for the production of Λ c + D 0 , D 0 D + and D − : σ(Λ c ) ⩽ 8 μ b , σ( D 0 ) ⩽ 64 μ b , σ( D 0 ) b , σ( D + ) ⩽ 51 μ b and σ( D − ) ⩽ 49 μ b per nucleon, assuming linear A dependence. Systematic errors due to uncertainties in branching ratios and to model dependence of the acceptance calculation are discussed.

Abstract

Results on the elastic K−π− scattering have been obtained from a study of the K−π− system in 15 000 events of the type K−p→K−π−pπ+ at a K− beam momentum of 4.25 GeV/c. The on-mass-shell values of the spherical harmonic moments of the K−π− scattering angular distribution and the K−π− elastic cross section have been obtained by extrapolation to the pion pole. From these values we determined the s- and p-wave phase shifts δ03 and δ13 as a function of the effective mass of the K−π− system between threshold and 1.25 GeV/c2. The value of |δ03| is smaller than 17° for all mass values and the existence of a p-wave cannot be neglected. At mK−π− = 1.18 GeV/c2 there are two solutions for the phase shifts. On the average, the cross section of the K−π− elastic scattering over the region of the effective mass considered amounts to approximately 2.5 mb.

Abstract

Results are reported of a study of the hypercharge reactions K−p → ωΛ (la), K−p → φΛ (lb), K−p → φ∑o (lc), K−p → ϱoΛ (ld), K−p → ϱo∑o (le), K−p → ϱ−∑+ (lf) in a 12 events/ub bubble chamber experiment using K−mesons of 4.25 GeV/c momentum. Total and differential cross sections are presented as well as the density matrix elements of the peripherally produced vector meson and (except for reaction (1f)) the hyperon polarization. For reactions (1a) and (1b) an amplitude analysis is performed. The mass and the width of the ϱ−, φ− and f-meson have been determined.

Abstract

We have observed three unique decays of F mesons into KK π and five unique decays of D mesons into KK π using the NA11 spectrometer together with a telescope of high-resolution silicon microstrip detectors. The mass value obtained for the F meson is (1975 ± 4) MeV, the lifetime (3.2± 1.3 3..0 )×10 −13 s.

The spin parity of the η′ (958) is studied in the reaction K − p → η ' Λ at 4.2 GeV/ c , using bubble chamber data with a statistical sensitivity of 128 events/μb. The data unambiguously prefer the 0 − assignment.

Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the K 0 π + π − system produced in the charge exchange reaction K − p → ( K 0 π + π − ) n at 4.2 GeV/ c has been performed both as a function of Kππ mass and of t ′. The 1 + S wave forms the largest contribution to the K ππ system and peaks at roughly the same mass as the Q in diffractive K ππ production. The polarization properties of the 1 + S ( K ∗ π) and 1 + S (Kϱ) waves differ fromt those of the diffractive 1 + wave. There is some evidence for a resonance contribution to 1 + S ( K ∗ π) . The strong 2 + wave the K ∗ (1420) and the K ϱ/ K ∗ ϱ decay branching ratio determined to be 0.36±0.10. An enhancement with spin-parity 1 − is observed under K ∗ (1420) .

Abstract

D ∗± , D ± , D 0 , and D 0 production has been observed in π −Be interactions at 120, 175, and 200 GeV. The dependence of the D cross section on transverse and longitudinal momentum is presented. The ratio of D∗ to D and charged to neutral D production is determined. Leading particle effects in D production are investigated. Relative branching ratios for several D decay modes are evaluated. A limit on D 0 − D 0 mixing is given.

Abstract

Evidence is found for overlap and interference between Δ ++ and Q − production in K − p → K − π − π + p at 4.25 GeV/ c . The strong forward asymmetry observed in the Δ ++ decay is such that it cannot be explained by the contribution of p π + S- and P-waves only. It finds a natural interpretation in terms of overlap between Δ ++ ar Q − production. The interference between Δ ++ and Q − production is constructive over essentially the whole Δ ++ region.

Abstract

We present results on a sample of Λc decays obtained in the NA32 experiment in 1985 using charge-coupled devices for vertex reconstruction and a trigger on Λc→pK−π+ (and charge conjugate). We observe a distinct peak at the Λc mass on zero background. The lifetime of the Λc is determined to be (1.4±0.30.5±0.3)x10−13 s based on a sample of 14 events.

Abstract

A bubble-chamber study is presented of a 10 events/μb experiment using K− mesons of 4.25 GeV/c incident momentum. Differential and total cross sections are determined for 7 different reactions: K−p → K0n (la), → π0Λ (lb), → ηΛ (lc), → η′Λ (ld), → π−Σ (le), → π+Σ− (lf), K+ Ξ− (lg). The experimental characteristics in dσ/dt of each reaction are described: (la) shows a levelling off at t = 0 (GeV/c)2, a break at t = −0.6 (GeV/c)2 and no backward events, (lb) dσ/dt has a smooth behaviour and a measurable backward component with an indication of a dip at u = −0.2 (GeV/c)2, (1c) dσ/dt shows a dip in the region between t ≈ −0.2 and −0.4 (GeV/c)2, (ld) dσ/dt has a smooth behaviour; neither this reaction nor the preceding one shows a clear evidence for backward events, (le) dσ/dt has a break at t = −0.5 (GeV/c)2; there is a significant cross section in the backward region; (lf) and (lg) show mainly backward production. The polarization of the hyperon is measured in the reactions (lb), (lc), (ld) and (le) in the forward production peak. The statistics do not allow the detection of a definite structure in the polarization but the sign and magnitude are determined. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a dual Regge model, including the effects of absorption as elaborated recently by several authors.

Abstract

Using the same method as applied before to 5 GeV/ c K + p scattering we analyzed 4.2 GeV/ c K − p elastic scattering down to | t | values of 0.01 (GeV/ c ) 2 . About 5500 events yielded the following results: the ratio of real to imaginary part of the nuclear amplitude α = 0.20 ± 0.07, the slope of the exponential A = 8.6 ± 0.2 (GeV/ c ) −2 , the total elastic nuclear cross-section σ el = 4.3 ± 0.1 mb and the total cross-section σ T = 25.0 ± 0.7 mb.
