22. Key factors controlling shale oil enrichment in saline lacustrine rift basin: implications from two shale oil wells in Dongpu Depression, Bohai Bay Basin

Abstract

Comparative analyses of petroleum generation potential, reservoir volume, frackability, and oil mobility were conducted on 102 shale cores from the Dongpu Depression. Results show the shale has high organic matter contents composed of oil-prone type I and type II kerogens within the oil window. Various types of pores and fractures exist in the shale, with a porosity of up to 14.9%. The shale has high brittle mineral contents, extensive fractures, and high potential for oil mobility due to high seepage capacity and overpressure. Although the petroleum generation potential of the shale at Well PS18-8 is relatively greater than that at Well PS18-1, oil content of the latter is greater due to the greater TOC. The porosity and fracture density observed in Well PS18-1 are greater and more conducive to shale oil enrichment. Although the shales in Wells PS18-1 and PS18-8 have similar brittle mineral contents, the former is more favorable for anthropogenic fracturing due to a higher preexisting fracture density. Besides, the shale at Well PS18-1 has a higher seepage capacity and overpressure and therefore a higher oil mobility. The fracture density and overpressure play key roles in shale oil enrichment.

Abstract

The effects of coacervation acidity, phase separation temperature, ionic strength, and biopolymer ratio on the viscoelasticity of the N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC) – gum Arabic (GA) coacervate were investigated by using coacervate yield as the indicator of electrostatic interaction strength. The strongest interaction between NOCC and GA occurred at pH 3.0, whereas the highest modulus values were found in the coacervate separated at pH 6.0. The coacervate yield did not vary with phase separation temperature in the range 4–55 °C, but the coacervate viscoelasticity declined as the temperature increased from 25 °C to 45 °C and then peaked at 55 °C. The presence of NaCl weakened the electrostatic interaction between the two polyelectrolytes, but no dose-dependent reduction in viscoelasticity was observed for their coacervates. Besides, the highest electrostatic interaction strength and coacervate viscoelasticity were recorded at different GA to NOCC ratios. It is proposed that the strength of electrostatic interaction is not the only parameter that determines the viscoelasticity of the NOCC – GA coacervate.

Abstract

Segregation of aluminum and antimony of spangles on a batch hot-dip galvanized Zn-0.05Al-0.2Sb coating were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in backscattered electron mode and with energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results showed that the coating surface displays shiny, feathery and dull spangles, in which considerable metallic oxides and precipitates are detected on coating surface. The metallic oxides on coating surface are identified as mainly ZnO and Al 2 O 3 , whilst the nature of the precipitates is identified as Sb 3 Zn 4 . Aluminum and antimony are enriched in layers within a thickness of 10–20 nm underneath the outer surface of the coating. The segregation behavior of aluminum and antimony is studied and discussed in terms of the solidification process of the coating.

Abstract

Lacustrine shale oil resources are abundant and play important roles in maintaining a sustainable economy. The uncertainty in the movable oil content of organic-rich shales with strong heterogeneity is the greatest risk in their exploration. Various methods exist for movable oil content evaluation, but they present many challenges, especially insufficient accuracy, complicated test procedures, high costs, and limited application. In this study, an extensive review of the theories, techniques, and methods of movable oil content evaluation and their merits and demerits for lacustrine shales were conducted. Then, taking the lacustrine shale of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation (50.5–33 Ma) of the Dongpu Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, as an example, the multi-step Rock-Eval pyrolysis method combined with light hydrocarbon calibration was utilized to evaluate the movable oil content Subsequently, key factors controlling movable oil content were investigated, including organic matter richness, type, and thermal maturity, quartz content, clay mineral content, pore volume, and specific surface area. Both the systematic cluster analysis results and regression standardization coefficients indicate that the total organic carbon content, pore volume, and specific surface area are the main controls on movable oil content. Finally, a quantitative estimation model for movable oil content was established and validated using a statistical product and service solutions modeling. This study improves the understanding of shale oil enrichment laws and provides a novel and practical quantitative model for movable oil content estimation in lacustrine organic-rich shales across the world.

Abstract

Tetracycline (C22H24N2O8) is a well-known emerging contaminant that is generally used in pharmaceuticals and personal-care products. Traditional biological treatment technologies are inadequate for quickly and completely removing tetracycline from wastewater; hence, the ozonation investigated in this study is preferable. The effects of several reaction parameters, such as tetracycline concentration, pH, temperature, addition of ·OH radical scavengers, gas type, and bubble size, were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the connection of air or pure oxygen gas with a millibubble or ultrafine-bubble compressor could not remove tetracycline. As the ozonation was carried out, the degradation of tetracycline exceeded 99.5 %, followed by approximately 40 % mineralization with 60-min treatment. A lower pH level or a higher reaction temperature was practical to increase the degradation of tetracycline; also, the increase in the formation of ·OH radicals was impressive to mineralize further the organic compound. According to the experimental results shown in this study, ultrafine-bubble ozonation is a feasible way to degrade the antibiotics effectively and decrease the toxicity in water within a short treatment duration, and with low ozone gas consumption.
