Abstract

The past decade has brought tremendous growth in the under-standing of the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in cholestasis, both at the genetic and acquired levels. The discovery and characterization of an array of hepatobiliary transport proteins, the nuclear receptors that regulate them, and the potential clinical implications of these defective, altered, or variably expressed proteins are the key elements of our current understanding of cholestasis. It is hoped that future studies will enhance therapeutic options and the ability to care for patients with cholestatic disorders.

Abstract

The inclusive branching ratios of the τ lepton to one, three and five charged particle final states are measured from data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The data sample consists of 12707e + e − → τ + τ − candidate events and has an estimated background of 1.9%. The branching ratios are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the data which gives B 1 = 84.48 ± 0.27 (stat) ±0.23 (sys)%, B 3 = 15.26±0.26±0.22% and B 5 = 0.26±0.06±0.05% respectively where B 1 + B 3 + B 5 is constrained to equal one. The inclusive one-prong branching ratio is found to be significantly lower than the 1990 Particle Data Group world average while the branching ratio to three charged particles is correspondingly higher. The five-prong branching ratio is in agreement with the world average measurement.

Abstract

study objective: To examine the safety and efficacy, as well as the economic impact, of outpatient intravenous antibiotic administration using an ambulatory infusion pump. design: Retrospective analysis of patients treated through a single home care pharmacy. setting: General community and skilled nursing facilities of the greater Monterey (California) area. patients: Ninety-eight consecutive patients with infections requiring parenteral antibiotics, treated outside the acute-care setting and not eligible for traditional intravenous minibag administration. interventions: Patients received intravenous antibiotics either in the home setting (86%) or in skilled nursing facilities (11%) using a Pharmacia Deltec CADD-VT ambulatory infusion device. measurements and main results: Between April 1, 1986, and July 30, 1988, 98 patients received parenteral antibiotics using an infusion pump, and complete data were available on 96 (98%). A total of 109 treatment courses were given over 1,917 treatment days, with a mean duration of therapy of 18 days. Twenty-three different infections were treated by the use of 12 separate antibiotics. The most common complications included vein irritation (11%) and the inability to maintain venous access (6.2%). Therapy costs were equivalent to or less than the intravenous minibag system depending on the frequency of antibiotic administration. Eighty percent of patients experienced successful resolution of their infection. conclusions: Ambulatory antibiotic infusion pumps can be used safely and effectively in the outpatient setting. Use of these pumps should increase the number of patients eligible for out-ofhospital treatment, resulting in a marked reduction in treatment costs.

Abstract

Internal hydrogen concentrations of 4 appm were found to have a significant effect on the fatigue crack growth rate of a 12Cr-1Mo steel tested at 25°C. This effect was most pronounced at ΔK values lower than about 15 MPa √ m for tests conducted at a load ratio of 0.5. Hydrogen induced an intergranular fracture mode that increased in percentage of the total fracture with decreasing crack velocities at decreasing ΔK values. Hydrogen has been shown to induce intergranular fracture in this steel in precharged and dynamic tensile tests and in subcritical crack growth tests at cathodic potentials. The fatigue crack growth rate of both the hydrogen-charged and uncharged material was a function of the cyclic frequency between frequencies of 0.2 and 5 Hz; the fatigue crack growth rate increased with decreasing frequencies or increasing period. There is some evidence that the as-received hydrogen concentration of 1 appm affected the crack growth rate.

Abstract

Large doses of testosterone were used to cause degeneration of the testicular germinal epithelium and a subsequent rebound of spermatogenesis, to produce improved seminal fluid. A 29% pregnancy rate was obtained by 131 patients treated for idiopathic oligospermia, and an 8% pregnancy rate was obtained by 12 patients treated for azoospermia. The seminal fluid of three patients (2%) was permanently damaged by the therapy.

Abstract

This study demonstrates that nonlinearities, coupled with worker heterogeneity, make it possible to reconcile the Diamond-Mortensen-Pissarides model with the labor market dynamics observed in the United States. Nonlinearities, induced by firings and downward real wage rigidities, magnify adjustments in quantities, whereas heterogeneity concentrates them on the low-paid workers' submarkets. The model fits the job finding, job separation, and unemployment rates well. It also explains the Beveridge curve's dynamics and the cyclicality of the involuntary component of separations. The estimated dynamics of the aggregate shock that allows generating the US labor market fluctuations has a correlation with unemployment that changes of sign during the 80s. We also show that the differences in adjustment between submarkets predicted by the model are consistent with the data of job flows by educational attainment.
