Abstract

The maintenance scheme in the compact helical fusion reactor, FFHR-c1, equipped with the liquid metal divertor, REVOLVER-D (Reactor-oriented Effectively VOLumetric VERtical Divertor) and the cartridge-type molten salt blankets, CARDISTRY-B (CARtridges Divided and InSerTed RadiallY − Blanket), is investigated. The magnetic configuration of the compact variant FFHR-c1 is similar to that of the Large Helical Device (LHD), while the device size is 2.8 times enlarged from LHD and a strong magnetic field strength of ∼8 T at the plasma center is adopted. The maintenance of the REVOLVER-D is simpler than that of the helical divertor with a complicated structure as seen in the LHD. In the REVOLVER-D, showers of molten tin are injected into the ergodic layer at 10 inner ports. To circulate the molten tin, 10 sets of the shower system including a liquid metal pump, ducts, a showerhead, a pool, and a heat exchanger, are installed. These can be replaced with simple up/down motions. The CARDISTRY-B consists of 320 tritium breeding blanket cartridges, which are toroidally segmented every two degrees. These cartridges are maintained by using heavy manipulators with a simple 4DOF motion at a constant toroidal angle.

Abstract

Two-photon selective excitation of an infrared (IR)-inactive phonon mode by a mid-infrared tunable free-electron laser (FEL) was accomplished. The mode-selective phonon excitation of IR-active mode by one-photon excitation using FEL (Yoshida et al. (2013) [20]) was extended to the IR-inactive mode excitation. The T2g optical phonon mode in single-crystal diamond at 1, 332cm−1 was selected, and the FEL photon energy corresponding to the oscillation wavelength was tuned to the half of the target phonon energy. The successful mode excitation was confirmed by anti-Stokes Raman scattering signal of T2g for the sample at cryogenic temperature, where all other modes were suppressed. The signal was observed at T2g phonon energy with red-shift of the peak to 1, 306cm−1, which was accompanied by surface damage induced by intense laser irradiations.

27. Thermodynamics of the O₂/O²⁻ redox couple in molten (LiCl+KCl+Li₂O) systems

Abstract

Activity coefficients of oxide ion were determined by the measurements of the standard formal potential of O₂/O²⁻ with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode in molten (LiCl + KCl): LiCl:KCl = {58.5:41.5 (eutectic), 65:35, 70:30, 75:25} mol% at T = (673 to 803) K. The activity coefficient decreases with the increase of the LiCl content in the melt: (18.7 ± 1.5, 7.7 ± 1.0, 4.1 ± 0.4, and 1.6 ± 0.1), respectively, at T = 773 K in each melt. The result is explained by the attractive force between Li⁺ and O²⁻ which is stronger than that between K⁺ and O²⁻.

Abstract

Stability of a boron-doped diamond as an oxygen evolution electrode material was evaluated at 773 K in molten LiCl–KCl (58.5:41.5 mol%), LiCl–KCl (75:25 mol%), LiCl–CaCl₂ (64:36 mol%), LiCl–NaCl–CaCl₂ (52.3:13.5:34.2 mol%). In molten LiCl–KCl systems, the BDD is stable at 773 K regardless of the concentration of oxide ion and the composition of the melt. In molten LiCl–CaCl₂ and LiCl–NaCl–CaCl₂, the BDD electrode is less stable than in molten LiCl–KCl systems.

Abstract

The physicochemical properties of molten alkali bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, MTFSI (M = Li, K, Cs), mixture (xLiTFSI = 0.20, xKTFSI = 0.10, xCsTFSI = 0.70) were studied to develop a new rechargeable lithium battery operating at intermediate temperature (100–180 °C). The viscosity and ionic conductivity of this melt at 150 °C are 87.2 cP and 14.2 mS cm⁻¹, respectively. The cyclic voltammetry revealed that the electrochemical window at 150 °C is as wide as 5.0 V, and that the electrochemical deposition/dissolution of lithium metal occurs at the cathode limit. A Li/MTFSI (M = Li, K, Cs)/LiFePO₄ cell showed an excellent cycle performance at a constant current rate of C/10 at 150 °C; 95% of the initial discharge capacity was maintained after 50 cycles. Except for the initial few cycles, the coulombic efficiencies were approximately 100% for all the cycles, indicating the stabilities of the molten MTFSI mixture and all the electrode materials.

Abstract

Thermal properties of alkali bis(fluorosulfonyl)amides, MFSI (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), have been investigated. Binary phase diagrams of LiFSI–KFSI and NaFSI–KFSI systems have been constructed. Eutectic point for LiFSI–KFSI is 338 K at (xLi, xK) = (0.45, 0.55) and, that for NaFSI–KFSI is 330 K at (xNa, xK) = (0.45, 0.55). The electrochemical window of the eutectic LiFSI–KFSI is as wide as 6.0 V at 348 K with the cathode limit being lithium metal deposition. The electrochemical window of the eutectic NaFSI–KFSI is 5.0 V at 340 K with sodium metal deposition at the cathode limit. These new inorganic ionic liquids are highly promising for various electrochemical applications.
