Abstract: Recent studies suggest that the interaction of Aβ and Tau may be significant in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s diseases (AD). In addition, the potential influence of copper on Tau-related pathology in AD has not been previously addresseded and the interaction between Tau protein, Aβ and copper has even more recently been associated with AD. While the copper(II) interaction with the Aβ peptide has exhaustively been studied, the few studies carried out on copper(II) complexes with peptide fragments from Tau protein have been focused on the pseudo-repeats of Tau protein in the microtubule-binding region. No data have been reported about the metal complexes with peptides derived from the N-terminal portion of Tau protein, outside the microtubule-binding domain, despite increased levels of peptide fragments from this region have been detected in the Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of AD patients. Here we examine the interaction of two peptides fragments, encompassing the 1–25 or 26–44 residues of the human Tau protein sequence, with Aβ as well as the Cu2+-binding features of these two naturally occurring peptides. The CD experiments showed that copper(II) differently affects the peptide conformation of the two ligands and provided also insight into the donor atoms involved in metal coordination. Stoichiometry of copper(II) complexes was obtained by means of High resolution ESI-MS. Finally, the influence of the studied peptide on Aβ’s fibrillogenesis, either in the presence or absence of Cu2+, was investigated by means of Th-T fluorescence coupled with turbidimetric measurements. The observed different effect on the in vitro Aβ’s aggregation, was correlated with the affinity of copper(II) with the two peptide ligands. The overall results indicate that copper(II) can bind these peptides using the histidine residue or amino group as anchoring sites and that copper(II) binding may have a possible involvement in AD.

Abstract: This paper describes PROFETA (standing for Python RObotic Framework for dEsigning sTrAtegies), a framework for the programming of autonomous robots based on the Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) software model. PROFETA is inspired by AgentSpeak(L), a formal language for the creation of BDI software agents. The framework is implemented in Python, and utilizes the metaprogramming capabilities offered by this language to implement the operational semantics of AgentSpeak(L). PROFETA provides a flexible environment offering both traditional object-oriented imperative constructs and declarative constructs , enabling the definition of a robot's high-level behavior in a simple, natural way. The contributions of this paper, in the area of software design and development, are: (i) a methodology, equipped with suitable technical solutions, to extend the Python programming language with AgentSpeak(L) declarative constructs; and (ii) a unified environment enabling software components for robots to be developed using a single language (Python) within a single runtime environment (the Python virtual machine). A comparison between PROFETA and other similar frameworks is provided, illustrating common aspects and key differences.

Abstract: Monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes play a central role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and MAO inhibitors (MAOIs) are antidepressant drugs currently studied for theft neuroprotective properties in neurodegenerative disorders. In the present work MAOIs such as tranylcypromine [trans(+)-2-phenylcyclopropanamine, TCP] and its amide derivatives, TCP butyramide (TCP-But) and TCP acetamide (TCP-Ac), were tested for their ability to protect cortical neurons challenged with synthetic amyloid-beta (A beta)-(1-42) oligomers (100 nM) for 48 h. TCP significantly prevented A beta-induced neuronal death in a concentration-dependent fashion and was maximally protective only at 10 mu M. TCP-But was maximally protective in mixed neuronal cultures at 10 mu M, a lower concentration compared to TCP, whereas the new derivative, TCP-Ac, was more efficacious than TCP and TCP-But and significantly protected cortical neurons against A beta toxicity at nanomolar concentrations (100 nM). Experiments carried out with the Thioflavin-T (Th-T) fluorescence assay for fibril formation showed that TCP and its amide derivatives influenced the early events of the A beta aggregation process in a concentration-dependent manner. TCP-Ac was more effective than TCP-But and TCP in slowing down the A beta (1-42) aggregates formation through a lengthening at the lag phase. In our experimental model coincubation of A beta(1-42) oligomers with TCP-Ac was able to almost completely prevent A beta-induced neurodegeneration. These results suggest that inhibition of A beta oligomenmediated aggregation significantly contributes to the overall neuroprotective activity of TCP-Ac and also raise the possibility that TCP, and in particular the new compound TCP-Ac, might represent new pharmacological tools to yield neuroprotection in AD. Abstract: Angular correlations between charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for transverse momentum ranges within 0.5 < P-T,P-assoc < P-T,P-trig < 4 GeV/c. The correlations are measured over two units of pseudorapidity and full azimuthal angle in different intervals of event multiplicity, and expressed as associated yield per trigger particle. Two long-range ridge-like structures, one on the near side and one on the away side, are observed when the per-trigger yield obtained in low-multiplicity events is subtracted from the one in high-multiplicity events. The excess on the near-side is qualitatively similar to that recently reported by the CMS Collaboration, while the excess on the away-side is reported for the first time. The two-ridge structure projected onto azimuthal angle is quantified with the second and third Fourier coefficients as well as by near-side and away-side yields and widths. The yields on the near side and on the away side are equal within the uncertainties for all studied event multiplicity and p(T) bins, and the widths show no significant evolution with event multiplicity or p(T). Abstract: Mixed metal copper(II)-nickel(II) and copper(II)-zinc(II) complexes of four peptide fragments of human prion protein have been studied by potentiometric, UV–vis and circular dichroism spectroscopic techniques. One peptide contained three histidyl residues: HuPrP(84–114) with H85 inside and H96, H111 outside the octarepeat domain. The other three peptides contained two histidyl residues; H96 and H111 for HuPrP(91–115) and HuPrP(84–114)H85A while HuPrP(84–114)H96A contained the histidyl residues at positions 85 and 111. It was found that both histidines of the latter peptides can simultaneously bind copper(II) and nickel(II) ions and dinuclear mixed metal complexes can exist in slightly alkaline solution. One molecule of the peptide with three histidyl residues can bind two copper(II) and one nickel(II) ions. H85 and H111 were identified as the major copper(II) and H96 as the preferred nickel(II) binding sites in mixed metal species. The studies on the zinc(II)-PrP peptide binary systems revealed that zinc(II) ions can coordinate to the 31-mer PrP peptide fragments in the form of macrochelates with two or three coordinated imidazol-nitrogens but the low stability of these complexes cannot prevent the hydrolysis of the metal ion in slightly alkaline solution. These data provide further support for the outstanding affinity of copper(II) ions towards the peptide fragments of prion protein but the binding of nickel(II) can significantly modify the distribution of copper(II) among the available metal binding sites.

Abstract: The Pro-His-Ser-Arg-Asn (PHSRN) sequence in fibronectin is a second cell-binding site that synergistically affects Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD). The PHSRN peptide also induces cell invasion and accelerates wound healing. We report on the surface immobilization of PHSRN by spontaneous adsorption on polysiloxane thin films which have different surface free energy characteristics. Low-surface energy (hydrophobic) polysiloxane and the corresponding high-surface energy (hydrophilic) surfaces obtained by UV-ozone treatments were used as adsorbing substrates. The peptide adsorption process was investigated by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring and atomic force microscopy. Both adsorption kinetics and peptide rearrangement dynamics at the solid interface were significantly different on the surface-modified films compared to the untreated ones. Fibroblast cells cultures at short times and in a simplified environment, i.e., a medium-free solution, were prepared to distinguish interaction events at the interface between cell membrane and surface-immobilized peptide for the two cases. It turned out that the cell-adhesive effect of immobilized PHSRN was different for hydrophobic compared to hydrophilic ones. Early signatures of cell spreading were only observed on the hydrophilic substrates. These effects are explained in terms of different spatial arrangements of PHSRN molecules immobilized on the two types of surfaces.

Abstract: This paper presents REFCON, a framework for the automated development of Agent Communication Contexts (ACCs) in multi-agent systems (MASs). ACCs are intended to capture the interaction requirements of a MAS. A formal specification framework is first presented, aimed at modelling an ACC as a set of rules for filtering and filling messages, based on their contents, and the names and roles of the exchanging agents. A XML-based specification language is then introduced, which encodes the specification formalism for the sake of its computer processing. Finally, an object-oriented software architecture capable of supporting ACC-based MAS development is presented. REFCON key characteristic is that it allows a seamless integration of ACC support (even) into an existing MAS, at run-time, independently of the agent platform used for the implementation. This is made possible by a layered software architecture based on computational reflection, a technology that allows transparent evolution and adaptation of existing systems. The REFCON framework is also dynamic, in the two-fold sense that it is capable of both adding new rules and handling multiple contexts, which it can easily switch among, at run-time. The ACC-based design of an example MAS for document sharing is briefly discussed, as a demonstration of the principles put forward.

Abstract: We present the characteristics of a new multidetector based on monolithic silicon telescopes: MONTE. By using high-energy ion implantation techniques, the Δ E and residual energy stages of such telescopes have been integrated on the same silicon chip, obtaining extremely thin Δ E stages of the order of 1 μm. This allowed one to obtain a very low charge identification energy threshold and a very good β background suppression in reactions induced by radioactive ion beams. The multidetector has a modular structure and can be assembled in different geometrical configurations according to experimental needs.

Abstract: Sequencing of the homopolymeric tract of cytosines (C-stretch) in human mitochondrial HVI region usually results in a blurred pattern beyond it when a T/C transition at nt 16189 occurs: it depends on a length heteroplasmy probably arising through a replication slippage. This study aims to investigate the distribution of heteroplasmic length variants within three related individuals along maternal lineage by cloning approach. Sequencing of multiple independent clones (12–14) is sufficient to yield heteroplasmic profiles. In addition, we illustrate a direct correlation between expansion of heteroplasmy modal length and reduction of the number of adenines preceding the homopolymeric tract; this association may be useful in pedigree analysis and in forensic field for tissues comparison, single hair sample included.

Abstract: The reaction N-13 + B-11 has been investigated at two 13N beam energies: 29.5 and 45 MeV, Charged particles and gamma rays emitted in the reactions have been detected using a large array of silicon strip detectors and BaF2 scintillators, respectively. Several reaction channels have been analysed with different aims. The proton transfer reaction B-11(N-13, C-12)C-12 to various excited states of C-12 has been studied to obtain information on the N-13(g.s.) structure. The excitation energy of the Mg-24 compound nucleus was in the region where several resonances occur in the C-12 + C-12 system. The six-alpha decay of the Mg-24 intermediate system has been studied. Some of these events have been identified as coming from the break-up of two C-12* in the 3(1)(-)-3(1)(-) and 3(1)(-)-0(2)(+) states. The total fusion cross section has also been extracted from the data. In order to extract information on the isospin purity/mixing in Mg-24 at high excitation energy (E-x similar to 47 MeV), the GDR gamma emission from this self-conjugate nucleus has been studied. Abstract: A new prototype of large area (20×20 mm 2 ) monolithic silicon telescope with an ultrathin Δ E stage (1 μm) has been built and tested. A particular mask for the ground electrode has been developed to improve the charge collection reducing the induction between the E and Δ E stages. A special designed preamplifier has been used for the readout of the signal from the Δ E stage to overcome the problem of the large input capacitance (40 nF). A rather low energy threshold charge discrimination has been obtained. Small side effects due to the electric field deformation near the ground electrode were observed and quantified.

Abstract: An apparatus for detecting light and heavy fragments, in coincidence with γ-rays is described. Its use is foreseen for studying heavy ion complete and incomplete fusion reactions at low and intermediate energy. The ΔE-E and TOF techniques are used for charged particle identification at small angles using a combination of Si strip detectors and CsI(Tl) crystals. The γ-ray detection is performed by using a coverage of 9 clusters, each consisting of 7 BaF2 crystals, similar to the TAPS configuration, resulting in a large solid angle and a high granularity. We report on recent results about the charged particle discrimination and the time and energy resolution for the whole detector. Initial tests were performed using 12C, 19F and 28Si beams accelerated by the 15 MV tandem of the Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud in Catania.

Abstract: Force field parameters for use in MM2 and CHARMm programs for the title cyclic phosphazenes have been developed. The Dinur-Hagler energy second derivative approach, based on SCF calculations at the 4–31G∗ level on a model compound, has been applied to achieve the related parameters by a fitting procedure. A useful method for obtaining energy second derivatives, with respect to only one valence coordinate from the cartesian hessian matrix is also presented. The MM2 and CHARMm structures of the cyclic model compound calculated by the new force field parameter set agreed with the structure deduced from ab initio calculation. Some differences between the empirical force field and quantum mechanical methods were found on torsion angles defined by at least three atoms of the ring. This could be attributed to the non-cyclic structure of the model compound required to extract the information for torsion angle interactions. Calculated and X-ray structures of 2,2,4,4,6,6-hexakis-(phenoxy)-2 λ 5 ,4 λ 5 ,6 λ 5 -cyclotriphosphaza-1,2,5-triene were in reasonable agreement. The conformations about P-O and O-C bonds in the solid were reproduced less well owing to the expected larger effect of the crystal environment on torsional angles corresponding to the exocyclic molecular fragments.

Abstract: The formation of the inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin with the new cognition activator (±)-1-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinepropanoic acid (CI-933) and the chiral discrimination capability of the macrocyclic host towards the racemic guest were evident from 1H NMR studies. The structure, relative host-guest orientation and binding mode of the complex were studied using the ROESY NMR technique complemented by molecular modelling and molecular dynamics simulations ( charmm ). All these methods converged towards the structure attained by inserting the guest, the aromatic ring first, into the hydrophobic cavity of the host from the side of the secondary hydroxyls. Both the R- and S-enantiomers were found deeply inserted into the host, the diastereoisomeric complexes formed featuring different numbers and distribution of intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Abstract: Derivation of force-field parameters for chlorophosphazenes was performed through the technique of energy derivatives starting from ab initio calculated data. The SCF method at the 4-31G* level provided the energy surface for the model compound OP 2 NCl 5 . The ab initio search of minima (STO-3G*, 4-31G*, 6-31G* basis sets) was also made for the oligomer OP 3 N 2 Cl 7 . The results were compared with those obtained by molecular mechanics including the calculated parameter sets for the MM2 atom types: 25 (P), 9 (N), 7 (O), 12 (Cl). The force-field method improved by the obtained force constants compared quite well with the results produced by the quantum mechanical SCF calculations.

Abstract: The geometry and structural features of the inclusion complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) with the chiral antiamnesic drugs (+/-)-1-benzyl-4-hydroxymethylpyrrolidin-2-one (WEB-1868). (+/-)-1-benzenesulfonyl-5-ethoxypyrrolidin-2-one (RU-35929), and (+/-)-1-(3-pyridinlysulfonyl)-5-ethoxypyrrolidin-2-one (RU-47010) were studied by the molecular modeling method (MacroModel interactive computer program). Docking procedures yielded the most stable complexes, which showed the aromatic ring of the guests inside the cavity and the pyrrolidinone ring out from the side of the beta-CD secondary hydroxyl groups. The binding energies were essentially due to hydrogen-bonded structures involving the C=O group of the guests. Selective interactions allowed chiral discrimination, and accordingly, separate beta-CD complexes of the R and S enantiomers of each guest compound were studied. The almost round beta-CD structure, in all the cases, assumed an elliptic shape on passing from the isolated molecule to the docked complex. The optimized structures and conformations of beta-CD and its inclusion compounds showed acceptable general agreement with information from proton nuclear magnetic resonance studies.

Abstract: The X-ray molecular structure of buprenorphine hydrochloride [(C29H42O4N)+Cl−] was determined. The molecule forms colourless tetragonal crystals; the space group is P412121 with eight molecules per unit cell of dimensions a = 11.507(2) A and c = 41.952(9) A. The structure was determined by direct methods and refined by the full-matrix least-squares procedure to R = 0.056 for 2251 observed reflections. The protonated buprenorphine (BPNH+) in the solid state adopts the T-shape form typical of benzomorphan compounds; the substituent group at the N atom is in the equatorial configuration and the cyclopropylmethyl side-chain is almost perpendicular to the piperidine ring. Theoretical studies of the conformations and the rotational energetics of BPNH+ were performed using both the semiquantitative MNDO and the force field (MM2) methods. The latter method predicted four low energy conformations about the N-C(21) and C(21)-C(22) bonds. Two of these were more significantly populated (59% and 30%). They may easily interconvert through only a single torsional process. The less-populated (30%) conformation was consistent with that adopted in the solid state. The MNDO method predicted different low energy conformations of the N-cyclopropylmethyl moiety. Neither method reproduced the favoured torsional angles adopted by the structurally analogous naltrexone molecule which has the opposite pharmacological profile.

Abstract: The crystal and molecular structures of the nootropic agents RU-47001 ((±) 1-(4-nitrobenzenesulphonyl)-2-oxo-5-ethoxypyrrolidine) and RU-47064 ((±) 1-(4-nitrobenzenesulphonyl)-2-oxo-5-isopropyloxypyrrolidine) have been determined by X-ray analysis and their solution conformation has been investigated using 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The conformations of these molecules together with those of their analogues RU-35929 ((±) 1-benzenesulphonyl-2-oxo-5-ethoxypyrrolidine), RU-47010 ((±) 1-(3-pyridinylsulphonyl)-2-oxo-5-ethoxypyrrolidine) and RU-35965 ((±) 1-benzenesulphonyl-2-oxo-5-isopropyloxypyrrolidine) have been deduced from semi-quantitative PM3 type theoretical calculations. The main feature of all compounds consists of a common envelope conformation with C (4) at the flap of the pyrrolidinone ring in the solid, that in solution changes into the analogous, but opposite, possible puckered conformational isomer. The 5-alkoxy groups were found rather flexible in solution. Theoretical preferred conformations about NS and SC bonds were in acceptable agreement with those of the solid state. The calculated torsional energetics suggested that 1 – 5 do not undergo conformational interconversion.

The conformations of the isolated molecules 1 and 2 have been deduced from AM1-type theoretical calculations. Whilst in 1 there are no hydrogen bonds, in 2 stabilization of the crystal occurs through effective inter- and intramolecular bonds. The five-membered ring in both 1 and 2 adopts an envelope conformation in the solid with C(3) at the flap displaced from the C(1), C(2), C(4), N(5) mean plane. Bond distances and angles are normal and comparable with previously known similar structures. In the crystal, the torsion angles C(1)-N(5)-C(6)-C(7) and N(5)-C(6)-C(7)-C(8) in 1 are 43.1° and 44.8°, respectively; the same torsion angles in 2 are −101° and 42°, respectively. Results of theoretical calculations correlate well with the conformation of 1 in the solid, whilst in the case of 2 these indicate that the conformation in the crystal should not be retained by the isolated molecule. The complete analysis of the very high field (600 MHz) 1 H NMR spectra of both compounds in CDCl 3 , gives results well in line with the above established conformational features.

Abstract: As a result of a collaboration between SGS-Thomson and INFN, a Monolithic Silicon Detector Telescope with *E/E of 4] 4m m 2with an ultra-thin *E stage (1 lm) has been recently presented as a tool to identify low-energy heavy ions. The good performances obtained in the charge identification are anyway limited by the relatively small active area. We report on two new larger area *E/E telescopes. The first one, a five strip detector with each *E strip 3] 4m m 2and a common E stage, has given on-beam good results. The second one, a 20]20 mm2 active area, is under test and is limited by the high capacitance of the *E stage (40 nF) requiring a suitable front-end electronics, presented in a di⁄erent communication. Abstract: Polymorphic DNA sequences can be amplified over a rnillionfo1d with polymerase chain reaction (PCR), therefore samples can be typed even when the DNA is degraded or very small amount is available. The HLA Class II genes HLA-DR, -DQ, and -DP present a high degree of polymorphism and are suitable as genetic markers for individual forensic identification (Korman et al 1985). Higuchi et al (1988) typed for HLA-DQA single hairs by using PCR. We report a case concerning five hairs found on the hands of a murdered man. HLA-DPB polymorphism was analyzed from all the single hairs, for two simultaneously with HLA-DQB polymorphism. The typing was compared to that obtained from plucked hairs of the victim and the suspect.

Abstract: N -( p -anisoyl)pyrrolidin-2-one in the crystalline state exhibites a cis — rans conrotatory conformation with NCO and COC ar rotational angles of 33.5° and 38.5° respectively, and the p -methoxy group situated cis to the central carbonyl bond, as shown by X-ray structure analysis. As suggested by dipole moment analysis and MMP2 molecular mechanics calculations, in solution similar conrotatory models hold for both c - and t -subconformers having the p -methoxy group cis or trans to the central carbonyl bond. INDO calculations were also carried out, indicating that both subconformers are equally stable.

Abstract: The conformation of 3,3′-dithienyl-methane (DTM) has been investigated by means of quantum-mechanical MINDO/3 calculations in conjunction with analysis of dipole moment data obtained in benzene solution. The results rule out free rotation and there is a clear preference for the twisted conformations (75°, 75°) and (75°, 285°), the former being energetically more favourable and corresponding to a cis - trans arrangement of the rings. Easy interconversion between these conformers may occur via concerted rotation of the rings. Analysis in terms of a Fourier-type expansion of the internal rotation potential function shows the predominance of the hyperconjugative interactions in determining the conformational features of DTM.

Abstract: The major postoperative complications of esophagocardiomyotomy (ECM) for achalasia are peptic esophagitis due to gastroesophageal reflux and recurrence. According to other authors, the incidence of postoperative esophagitis is 15% ot 25%. We report the results obtained in 40 patients treated by our own surgical technique, which is based on precise anatomic and physiopathological criteria. With this technique an ECM without esophagogastric mobilization is performed via a lower thoracotomy with partial perihiatal phrenotomy. There were no intraoperative or postoperative deaths. Two patients had postoperative basal pleurisy which was cured easily in a short time. In 36 of these patients, a follow-up ranging between 15 years and 6 months revealed a complete remission of dysphagia. The patients had significant and speedy improvement in their general condition. Seven patients had substernal pyrosis when lying down, but this was relieved in a few months in six of them. In only one patient did it persist for 4 years after the operation. Ph-manometric serial control studies performed in all the patients revealed, except in one case, normal pressure and pH values in the lower esophagus. Because of these results, we consider our ECM technique very effective in the treatment of achalasia.

Abstract: The He(I) photoelectron, u.v.-visible absorption, 1 H and 13 C NMR, i.r. and Raman-laser spectra of selenophthalic and tellurophthalic anhydride have been obtained and compared to those of phthalic and thiophthalic anhydride. The main features of the spectra of these four compounds (the ordering and splitting of the n CO and π x ionizations, the location and nature of the π → π* transitions, the trend and spread of the chemical shifts, and the symmetry assignments of the fundamental vibrations) have been surveyed and discussed in terms of qualitative and correlative arguments, related to the ability of the chalcogen atoms to transmit electronic effects, and also with the aid of semi-empirical MO calculations. A fair correlation between the average ionization energy of the CO lone pair orbitals, the average of the CO stretching frequencies and the 13 C carbonyl chemical shift has been found. The electric dipole moment, measured in benzene at 25°C, is 3.30D for selenophthalic anhydride and 2.71 D for tellurophthalic anhydride.

Abstract: The He(I) photoelectron spectra of dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine and tris-(phenylthio)arsine and dipole moment data on these compounds in benzene at 25°C were used to investigate the molecular conformations of the molecules. Dipole moment analyses showed that dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine is present in solution as an almost equimolar mixture of two conformers in which the CSAs group and the vertical of SCH3CH3As pyramid lie in one plane. The repulsion of the lone electron pairs on the arsenic and sulfur atoms is minimized in these conformers. The dipole moment for tris(phenylthio)arsine indicates a pyrmidal structure of C3υ symmetry for this compound with the phenyl groups pointing in the direction of the arsenic atom at the apex of the pyramid. The four low-energy bands in the photoelectron spectrum of dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine were assigned to the πa(phenyl) orbital (9.22 eV), the nAs orbital (8.78 eV) and the anti-bonding and non-bonding MO's (8.21 eV, 9.75 eV) which were formed by combining the lone pair orbital of sulfur of predominant p-character with the symmetric ring orbitals πsym and π0. The difference of ∼ 1.5 eV between the ionization energies of these anti- and non-bonding MO's is evidence for a non-planar conformation about the C6H5S group. The PE spectrum of tris(phenylthio)arsine is very similar to that of dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine in the low-energy region, and supports the conformation deduced from the dipole moment studies.

The influence of the transfer channels on the sub-barrier fusion cross section is discussed, and the importance of the proton stripping in 32 S + 64 Ni is pointed out.

Theoretical predictions at the 4-31G level indicate that the molecule has the E configuration and the antiperiplanar conformation, in agreement with what has been deduced earlier from dipole moment analysis of O -alkyl imidates and O -alkyl N -alkyl imidates.

Abstract: The crystal and molecular structure of the cognition activator 3-phenoxypyridine sulphate has been determined by X-ray analysis. The conformation in solution has been deduced from NMR spectroscopy and MO theoretical calculations of the MNDO type. From the 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra, run in 2H2O at 500 and 125 MHz, respectively, and the aid of 1H1H and 13C1H shift correlation experiments, spectral assignments are made. Crystals are monoclinic with unit cell dimensions a = 7.967(4), b = 5.899(4), c = 25.480(10) A, β = 96.90(5)°; space group P21/c. The structure is determined from 1307 three-dimensional counter data and refined to convergence factor values of R = 0.048 and Rw = 0.058. The rings of the 3-phenoxypyridinium cation, which is linked to the hydrogensulphate anion by a strong hydrogen bond, are planar and almost perpendicular to each other (89.6°). The twisted conformation in the solid parallels the minimum energy conformation calculated by the MNDO method in which the pyridinic and phenyl rings are rotated in opposite directions out of coplanarity with the COC plane, by 57° and 68°, respectively. The occurrence of a single conformation in solution is in agreement with results from NMR spectra analyses.

Abstract: A conformational study of the mixed agonist-antagonist opioid analgesics N-allyl-N-normetazocine (NAM) and nalorphine (NLP), both as free bases and N-protonated species (NAMH + , NLPH + ), was performed using semiempirical MO theoretical calculations AM1 type. The recognition of these opiate drugs by the pertinent receptors and their interactions with the receptor at the molecular level were investigated and discussed by the analyses of the conformational results as well as of the electrostatic molecular potential (EMP) contour maps calculated for the interacting active NAMH + and NLPH + species in their minimum energy conformations. Four preferred N-allyl orientations, which were almost similar for both drugs, were found for the conformationally more restricted ionic structures. Each set of four conformations was consisting of two pairs of equally populated “conformational enantiomers” relative to the involved N-allyl piperidine molecular fragment. The calculations also indicated the differences in energy barriers that exist between the two ionic and non-ionic states. Eight and seven energy minima were located for NAM and NLP, respectively. The lowest energy minima were the most populated ones, i.e. 37% and 44% in NAM and NLP, respectively. The EMP contour maps allowed to establish that in the N-substituted piperidine ring fragment the isopotential curves localization is the same for corresponding conformations in both NAMH + and NLPH + . The changes of the structure of the larger rigid molecular backbone as well as of the conformation of the N-allyl groups do not affect the EMP's relative to the backbone of NAMH + and NLPH + . Therefore the most suggestive feature of the results was that, in spite of the wide variation in structure and size of the molecular skeletons, the prerequisite for analogues activity functions in NAMH + and NLPH + appeared the similar preferred conformations and the corresponding electrostatic potentials of their N-allyl piperidine moiety.

Abstract: Electric dipole moments have been determined in benzene at 25 and 45 °C for bis(5-nitro-2-pyridyl) sulphide (compound 1) and 2-pyridyl-(5-nitro-2-pyridyl) sulphide (compound 2) and interpreted in terms of molecular conformations. It was found that compound 1 exists in an equilibrium mixture of three twisted conformers (± 36 ° out of the CSC plane), which corresponds to the N,N-inside; N,N-outside; N-inside, N-outside; orientations of the pyridine rings. The analysis for compound 2 suggests that a single skew conformation, where the pyNO 2 group lies on the CSC plane with the N atom inside, exists in solution.

47. Evidence for 3p-2h rotational bands in 17O

Abstract: Comparison is made, in the weak coupling hypothesis, between the transitions to positive parity 17 O states selectively excited in the 14 C( 6 Li, t) 17 O reaction at E( 6 Li ) = 34 MeV , and those from the 16 O( 6 Li,t) 19 Ne reaction at E( 6 Li) = 36 MeV , leading to the K π = 1 2 + rotational band states in 19 Ne. The good results show the validity of the weak coupling hypothesis and indicate the existence of two 3p-2h bands in the 17 O nucleaus. The candidates for L = 0, 2, 4 members of the T = 1 2 rotational band and for L = 4 member of the T = 3 2 band are suggested. These findings are confirmed by the extracted 3 He-spectroscopic strengths.

Abstract: The proton and carbon-13 NMR spectra of solutions in CDCl 3 of dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine and tris(phenylthio)arsine where investigated. All resolved experimental resonances were assigned and the coupling constants determined by means of an iterative procedure employing the LAO-COON3 program. The spectra were simulated using Gaussian—Lorentzian lineshapes. The protons in the 2,6- and 3,5-positions were found to be equivalent. The resonances appear in the sequence δ 2,6 ⪢ δ 3,5 ⪢ δ 4 and δ 2,6 ⪢ δ 4 ⪢ δ 3,5 for dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine and tris(phenylthio)arsine, respectively. Whereas the protons in the 2,6-positions resonate at the same frequency (7.44 ppm) in the two compounds, the shifts for the 3,5- and 4-protons of tris(phenylthio)arsine are downfield from those of dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine. These differences are explained in terms of the hypothesis that the conformation of the rigid tris(phenylthio)arsine molecule does not allow overlap between the sulfur atomholding the lone electron pair and the π-ring orbital to the same extent as in dimethyl(phenylthio)arsine; in which the phenyl group can oscillate about an equilibrium position characterized by maximal p s -π-ring overlap.

Abstract: The electron transmission spectra of selenophene and tellurophene were recorded in the 0–6 eV energy range. Two resonances associated with the addition of electrons to the 3b 1 and 2a 2 (π * ) MOs were identified. An additional resonance, which is not present in the spectra of furan and thiophene, was observed in selenophene and tellurophene. Xα calculations indicate that this additional resonance is caused by electron capture into a σ * MO with strong heteroatom “d” character. The energy trends of the anion states in the series of chalcophenes, C 4 H 4 X (X = O, S, Se, Te), are discussed in terms of d/π * mixing and of geometrical variations.

Abstract: The electric dipole moments of tautomeric 1 H -tetrazole and 2 H -tetrazole have been calculated by the ab initio molecular orbital technique with a 4-31G basis set, and compared with literature experimental values for gaseous C -deuterio-1 H -tetrazole and 2 H tetrazole. Calculated σ and π moments for both tautomers are discussed and compared with previous theoretical values. In 2 H -tetrazole the mesomeric moment outweighs the primary moment corresponding to the classical valence structure, in determining the actual direction of the molecular dipole moment. The calculated total energies are found to be equal for both tautomers. The fact that the dipole moment of tetrazole measured in dioxane (4.88 D) indicates the 1 H form to be the more abundant (78%) is due to a greater Onsager's solvent reaction-field stabilization of the more polar species.
