Abstract

Bamboo is a sustainable, lightweight material that is widely used in structural applications. To fully develop micromechanical models for plants, such as bamboo, the mechanical properties of each individual type of tissue are needed. However, separating individual tissues and testing them mechanically is challenging. Here, we report an alternative approach in which micro X-ray computed tomography (µ-CT) is used to image moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens). The acquired images, which correspond to the 3D structure of the parenchyma, are then transformed into physical, albeit larger scale, structures by 3D printing, and their mechanical properties are characterized. The normalized longitudinal Young's moduli of the fabricated structures depend on relative density raised to a power between 2 and 3, suggesting that elastic deformation of the parenchyma cellular structure involves considerable cell wall bending. The mechanical behavior of other biological tissues may also be elucidated using this approach. Statement of Significance: Bamboo is a lightweight, sustainable engineering material widely used in structural applications. By combining micro X-ray computed tomography and 3D printing, we have produced bamboo parenchyma mimics and characterized their stiffness. Using this approach, we gained insight into bamboo parenchyma tissue mechanics, specifically the cellular geometry's role in longitudinal elasticity. ©2017

Abstract

Summary Background Sexual violence is increasingly recognised as a public health issue. Information about prevalence, associated factors, and consequences for health in the population of Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) is scarce. The third National Survey of Sexual Health Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3) is the first of the Natsal surveys to include questions about sexual violence and the first population-based survey in Britain to explore the issue outside the context of crime. Methods Between Sept 6, 2010, and Aug 31, 2012, we did a probability sample survey of women and men aged 16–74 years living in Britain. We asked participants about their experience of sex against their will since age 13 years and the circumstances surrounding the most recent occurrence. We explored associations between ever experiencing non-volitional sex and a range of sociodemographic, health, and behavioural factors. We used logistic regression to estimate age-adjusted odds ratios to analyse factors associated with the occurrence of completed non-volitional sex in women and men. Findings We interviewed 15 162 people. Completed non-volitional sex was reported by 9·8% (95% CI 9·0–10·5) of women and 1·4% (1·1–1·7) of men. Median age (interdecile range) at most recent occurrence was 18 years (14–32) for women and 16 years (13–30) for men. Completed non-volitional sex varied by family structure and, in women, by age, education, and area-level deprivation. It was associated with poor health, longstanding illness or disability, and treatment for mental health conditions, smoking, and use of non-prescription drugs in the past year in both sexes, and with binge drinking in women. Completed non-volitional sex was also associated with reporting of first heterosexual intercourse before 16 years of age, same-sex experience, more lifetime sexual partners, ever being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection, and low sexual function in both sexes, and, in women, with abortion and pregnancy outcome before 18 years of age. In most cases, the person responsible was known to the individual, although the nature of the relationship differed by age at most recent occurrence. Participants who were younger at interview were more likely to have told someone about the event and to have reported it to the police than were older participants. Interpretation These data provide the first population prevalence estimates of non-volitional sex in Britain. We showed it to be mainly an experience of young age and strongly associated with a range of adverse health outcomes in both women and men. Abstract

We investigate the elastic behavior of periodic hexagonal honeycombs over a wide range of relative densities and cell geometries, using both analytical and numerical approaches. Previous modeling approaches are reviewed and their limitations identified. More accurate estimates of all nine elastic constants are obtained by modifying the analysis of Gibson and Ashby (1997) to account for the nodes at the intersection of the vertical and inclined members. The effect of the nodes becomes significant at high relative densities. We then compare the new analytical equations with previous analytical models, with a numerical analysis based on a computational homogenization technique and with data for rubber honeycombs over a wide range of relative densities and cell geometries. The comparisons show that both the new analytical equations and numerical solutions give a remarkably good description of the data. The results provide new insights into understanding the mechanics of honeycombs and designing new cellular materials in the future.

Abstract

Bamboo is an underutilized resource widely available in countries with rapidly developing economies. Structural bamboo products, analogous to wood products, allow flexibility in the shape and dimensions of bamboo structural members. Here, the ultrastructure, microstructure, cell wall properties and flexural properties of three species of bamboo (Moso, Guadua and Tre Gai) are compared. At a given density, the axial modulus of elasticity of Guadua is higher than that of Moso or Tre Gai, which are similar; ultrastructural results suggest that Guadua has a higher solid cell wall stiffness. Abstract

Many insect wings change shape dynamically during the wingbeat cycle, and these deformations have the potential to confer energetic and aerodynamic benefits during flight. Due to the lack of musculature within the wing itself, the changing form of the wing is determined primarily by its passive response to inertial and aerodynamic forces. This response is in part controlled by the wing’s mechanical properties, which vary across the membrane to produce regions of differing stiffness. Previous studies of wing mechanical properties have largely focused on surface or bulk measurements, but this ignores the layered nature of the wing. In our work, we investigated the mechanical properties of the wings of the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) with the aim of determining differences between layers within the wing. Nanoindentation was performed on both the surface and the interior layers of cross-sectioned samples of the wing to measure the Young’s modulus and hardness of the outer- and innermost layers. Abstract

Monolithic silica aerogels are well known for their low thermal conductivity (approximately 15 mW/(m K)) (Aegerter et al. (Eds.), 2011. Aerogels Handbook, first ed., Springer-Verlag New York, LLC, New York, NY). Their low relative density (typically less than 5%) reduces conduction through the solid and their small pore size, typically less than one hundred nanometers, on the order of the mean free path of air, reduces conduction through air, as well as convection and radiation. As they are fragile and brittle, they are often used in a granular form in thermal insulation, with some increase in their thermal conductivity from the air between the granules. Here, we describe a technique for compacting a bed of granular silica aerogel that reduces the thermal conductivity from 24 mW/(m K) (when uncompacted) to 13 mW/(m K) (after compaction). We find that there is an optimum level of compaction to minimize the thermal conductivity: at higher levels of compaction, the contact area between the granules increases and the granules densify, increasing conduction through the solid., DuPont MIT Alliance

Abstract

Monolithic silica aerogels provide exceptional thermal insulation but have low mechanical properties. For instance, their flexural strength is typically 0.03–0.08 MPa. Here, we report on the development of a truss-core sandwich panel filled with compacted aerogel granules, designed to provide both mechanical support and thermal insulation. Mechanical and thermal properties of the sandwich panel prototype were measured and compared with theoretical models available in the literature.
