Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most widespread xenobiotic pollutants in water and their abatement usually involves expensive and energy-consuming treatments. In this work, anthracene (AN) was selected as the recalcitrant model of PAHs and its solar light-stimulated heterogeneous photocatalytic abatement in aerated aqueous media was investigated using a new TiO derived thermoplastic nanocomposite in thin film form. The results were also compared with the benchmark TiO photocatalyst in slurry form. Finally, the possible contribution of reactive intermediates such as hydroxyl radical, AN radical cation and singlet oxygen, was investigated by using a hydroxyl radical trap and laser flash photolysis. Based on the obtained results, a feasible mechanism for AN photodegradation, which involves hydroxyl radical as the key oxidizing species is proposed., This research was funded by the University of Catania (Piano di incentivi per la ricerca di Ateneo, PIACERI–Linea 2).

Introduction Experts recommend integrating smoking-cessation treatments within U.S. mental health settings, but the population health benefits of doing so have not been estimated. This study simulates the impact of widespread cessation treatment for patients with depression under best-case treatment and maximum potential cessation scenarios. Methods Cessation interventions were simulated for U.S. adult smokers seeing a health professional for depression from 2020 to 2100. Interventions included (1) Any Treatment (behavioral counseling, pharmacological, combination) and (2) Pharmacological Treatment (including counseling), combined with increased mental health service utilization each. These were compared with a maximum potential cessation scenario where all patients with major depression quit smoking. Analyses were conducted in 2016–2020. Results Widespread uptake of Any Treatment among patients with depression would avert 32,000 deaths and result in 138,000 life-years gained by 2100; Any Treatment combined with 100% mental health service utilization would result in 53,000 and 231,000, respectively. Pharmacological Treatment would avert 125,000 deaths, with 540,000 life-years gained. Pharmacological Treatment combined with 100% mental health service utilization would result in 203,000 deaths averted and 887,000 life-years gained. Health gains under best-case treatment scenarios represent modest fractions of those projected under maximum potential cessation scenarios at current mental health service utilization levels (835,000 deaths averted, 3.73 million life-years gained) and at 100% utilization (1.11 million deaths averted, 5.07 million life years gained). Conclusions Providing smoking-cessation treatment to patients with depression and increasing mental health service utilization would reduce the toll of tobacco on this population. These gains would be considerably larger if cessation treatments were more effective.

Self-assessment is the most common method for monitoring performance and safety in the workplace. However, discrepancies between subjective and objective measures have increased interest in physiological assessment of performance. In a double-blind placebo-controlled study, 23 healthy adults were randomly assigned to either a placebo (n = 11; 5 F, 6 M) or caffeine condition (n = 12; 4 F, 8 M) while undergoing 50 h (i.e. two days) of total sleep deprivation. In previous work, higher salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) levels were associated with improved psychomotor vigilance and simulated driving performance in the placebo condition. In this follow-up article, the effects of strategic caffeine administration on the previously reported diurnal profiles of sAA and performance, and the association between sAA and neurobehavioural performance were investigated. Participants were given a 10 h baseline sleep opportunity (monitored via standard polysomnography techniques) prior to undergoing sleep deprivation (total sleep time: placebo = 8.83 ± 0.48 h; caffeine = 9.01 ± 0.48 h). During sleep deprivation, caffeine gum (200 mg) was administered at 01:00 h, 03:00 h, 05:00 h, and 07:00 h to participants in the caffeine condition (n = 12). This strategic administration of caffeine gum (200 mg) has been shown to be effective at maintaining cognitive performance during extended wakefulness. Saliva samples were collected, and psychomotor vigilance and simulated driving performance assessed at three-hour intervals throughout wakefulness. Caffeine effects on diurnal variability were compared with previously reported findings in the placebo condition (n = 11). The impact of caffeine on the circadian profile of sAA coincided with changes in neurobehavioural performance. Higher sAA levels were associated with improved performance on the psychomotor vigilance test during the first 24 h of wakefulness in the caffeine condition. However, only the association between sAA and response speed (i.e. reciprocal-transform of mean reaction time) was consistent across both days of sleep deprivation. The association between sAA and driving performance was not consistent across both days of sleep deprivation. Results show that the relationship between sAA and reciprocal-transform of mean reaction time on the psychomotor vigilance test persisted in the presence of caffeine, however the association was relatively weaker as compared with the placebo condition. Objective To identify core practices for workforce management of communication and swallowing functions in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive patients within the intensive care unit (ICU). Design A modified Delphi methodology was used, with 3 electronic voting rounds. AGREE II and an adapted COVID-19 survey framework from physiotherapy were used to develop survey statements. Sixty-six statements pertaining to workforce planning and management of communication and swallowing function in the ICU were included. Setting Electronic modified Delphi process. Participants Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) (N=35) from 6 continents representing 12 countries. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures The main outcome was consensus agreement, defined a priori as ≥70% of participants with a mean Likert score ≥7.0 (11-point scale: 0=strongly disagree, 10=strongly agree). Prioritization rank order of statements in a fourth round was also conducted. Results SLPs with a median of 15 years of ICU experience, working primarily in clinical (54%), academic (29%), or managerial positions (17%), completed all voting rounds. After the third round, 64 statements (97%) met criteria. Rank ordering identified issues of high importance. Conclusions A set of global consensus statements to facilitate planning and delivery of rehabilitative care for patients admitted to the ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic were agreed by an international expert SLP group. Statements focused on considerations for workforce preparation, resourcing and training, and the management of communication and swallowing functions. These statements support and provide direction for all members of the rehabilitation team to use for patients admitted to the ICU during a global pandemic.

Despite emoji often being assumed to be a form of emotional communication, the emotional affordances of these are not yet fully established. The current study employed the Emoji Spatial Stroop Task to explore whether spatial iconicity affects semantic-relatedness judgments relating to emoji stimuli. Namely, emoji stimuli were displayed in various vertical positions and valence perceptions were measured. A 3 (emoji valence; positive, negative, neutral) x 3 (vertical position; upper, lower, central) within-participants design was used to determine the impacts on valence perceptions. Valence perceptions were obtained from ratings on how positive/negative participants perceived stimuli to be on an 11-point Likert scale (−5 negative, 0 neutral and +5 positive). Findings from 157 participants revealed that, after controlling for current mood, both emoji valence and their vertical positioning impacted significantly on valence ratings. The valence × positioning interaction effect was also significant, highlighting a congruence effect whereby positive emoji in higher vertical space were rated significantly more positively than when in central or lower space, and negative emoji were rated significantly more negatively when displayed in lower vertical space compared to central or upper space. These congruence effects suggest we may embody emoji as symbolic objects to represent abstract emotional concepts.

Highlights • Beta rebound (PMBR) is reduced in recent-onset and established schizophrenia cases • In established cases, PMBR is negatively correlated with disorganisation symptoms • Hidden Markov model shows different transient pan-spectral bursts underlying PMBR., Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures magnetic fields generated by synchronised neural current flow and provides direct inference on brain electrophysiology and connectivity, with high spatial and temporal resolution. The movement-related beta decrease (MRBD) and the post-movement beta rebound (PMBR) are well-characterised effects in magnetoencephalography (MEG), with the latter having been shown to relate to long-range network integrity. Our previous work has shown that the PMBR is diminished (relative to controls) in a group of schizophrenia patients. However, little is known about how this effect might differ in patients at different stages of illness and degrees of clinical severity. Here, we extend our previous findings showing that the MEG derived PMBR abnormality in schizophrenia exists in 29 recent-onset and 35 established cases (i.e., chronic patients), compared to 42 control cases. In established cases, PMBR is negatively correlated with severity of disorganization symptoms. Further, using a hidden Markov model analysis, we show that transient pan-spectral oscillatory ”bursts”, which underlie the PMBR, differ between healthy controls and patients. Results corroborate that PMBR is associated with disorganization of mental activity in schizophrenia.

A major barrier to clinicians referring service users with psychosis for psychological therapies is the belief that they will not engage. We investigated therapy receipt after discharge, in a sample of service users who had already demonstrated willingness to engage in psychological therapy during an inpatient admission. Only one-third of service users (33%; 16/48) received at least 1 session of evidence-based therapy at 6-month follow-up after discharge. Therapy receipt was more common for service users with (i) lower delusional distress at discharge, (ii) Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) background, and (iii) discharged to an Early Intervention (EI) service.

The spinal cord is vital for the processing of sensorimotor information and for its propagation to and from both the brain and the periphery. Spinal cord function is affected by aging, however, the mechanisms involved are not well-understood. To characterize molecular mechanisms of spinal cord aging, microarray analyses of gene expression were performed on cervical spinal cords of aging rats. Of the metabolic and signaling pathways affected, cholesterol-associated pathways were the most comprehensively altered, including significant downregulation of cholesterol synthesis-related genes and upregulation of cholesterol transport and metabolism genes. Paradoxically, a significant increase in total cholesterol content was observed-likely associated with cholesterol ester accumulation. To investigate potential mechanisms for the perturbed cholesterol homeostasis, we quantified the expression of myelin and neuroinflammation-associated genes and proteins. Although there was minimal change in myelin-related expression, there was an increase in phagocytic microglial and astrogliosis markers, particularly in the white matter. Together, these results suggest that perturbed cholesterol homeostasis, possibly as a result of increased inflammatory activation in spinal cord white matter, may contribute to impaired spinal cord function with aging.

Transformation is an essential tool for modern fungal research and has played a fundamental role in gaining insight into gene function. Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated transformation of protoplasts is the most commonly used method for genetic transformation of filamentous fungi. Selectable marker genes, that confer resistance to antibiotics, are generally incorporated with the DNA of interest, allowing transformed cells to grow through the antibiotic overlay. Colonies arising from transformed fungal cells are sub-cultured and further analysed. However, the morphological state of the fungal cells during the transformation procedure has been largely overlooked. We investigated the morphological appearance of transformed fungal cells prior to their emergence through the antibiotic overlay. Hyphae appeared to segment and bulge, reminiscent of arthroconidia, an asexual spore typically produced by segmentation of pre-existing hyphae. Selective expression of eGFP under the control of a spore specific promoter, PcatA, in these cells confirmed their spore-like nature. Reducing the oxygen availability to surface-grown cultures partially recapitulated this morphological form. A GFP fusion to the cell wall integrity MAP kinase MpkA localised to the arthroconidia nuclei suggesting the cell wall integrity signalling pathway modulates cell wall stress responses in arthroconidia. This dramatic morphological change was also observed in transformed Magnaporthe oryzae cells suggesting it may be a more general phenomenon in filamentous fungi. Given the changes in cellular structure and spore-like appearance, these observations may have technical implications for deleting genes involved in these processes in Epichloë festucae and, more broadly, a range of fungal species.

Two new magnesium complexes containing the important utility amide 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide (TMP) have been synthesised. Treating the magnesium bis(alkyl) reagent (Me3SiCH2)2Mg with a molar equivalent of TMP(H) in hydrocarbon medium produces the dimeric alkylmagnesium amide complex [(Me3SiCH2)Mg(μ-TMP)]22, which was isolated in high yield. X-ray crystallography revealed that 2 was an unsymmetrical dimer as unusually the two TMP ligands adopt different conformations – one a chair, the other a twisted boat. Solution studies (multinuclear NMR and DOSY NMR spectroscopies) show that 2 undergoes a monomerisation and Schlenk equilibrium in d8-THF. When (Me3SiCH2)2Mg was reacted with two molar equivalents of TMP(H) in hydrocarbon medium [in an effort to prepare Mg(TMP)2] a crystalline sample of a surprising product, a tetranuclear triheteroanionic amide-alkoxide-amidoalkene [(TMP)Mg(μ-TMP){μ-N(H)C(Me)2CH2CH2CH2C(Me) = CH2}Mg(μ-OCH2SiMe3)]23 was obtained. Complex 3 contains two unexpected anions, namely the alkoxide produced via oxygen insertion into a Mg–C bond, and the primary amidoalkene which is produced via ring opening of the TMP anion.

Blood plasma collected from adult fish (black bream, Sparidae) exposed to a dose of 5 mg kg(-1) 17β-estradiol underwent metabonomic profiling using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). An extension of the orthogonal 2 projection to latent structure (O2PLS) analysis, tO2PLS, was proposed and utilized to classify changes between the control and experimental metabolic profiles. As a bidirectional modeling tool, O2PLS examines the (variable) commonality between two different data blocks, and extracts the joint correlations as well as the unique variations present within each data block. tO2PLS is a proposed matrix transposition of O2PLS to allow for commonality between experiments (spectral profiles) to be observed, rather than between sample variables. tO2PLS analysis highlighted two potential biomarkers, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and choline, that distinguish between control and 17β-estradiol exposed fish. This study presents an alternative way of examining spectroscopic (metabolite) data, providing a method for the visual assessment of similarities and differences between control and experimental spectral features in large data sets.

The combined effect of a plasticiser (glycerol) and a cross-linking agent (borax) on the mechanical properties of commercially extruded thermoplastic hydroxypropylated starch films was examined. The use of Design of Experiment (DOE) was demonstrated and used to predict and optimise formulations for a given set of material properties. As an extension to DOE, Orthogonal 2 Partial Least Squares (O2PLS) provided insight into joint correlations between the machine and transverse direction mechanical properties. Specific information regarding individual measurements or samples was also obtained with this analysis. O2PLS identified unique variables in individual compositions that were potentially incorrect measurements, or processing defects, which in turn can be used to aid quality control or processing optimisation with regards to DOE. Overall, DOE and O2PLS showed that within a starch borax-glycerol blend, borax increased mechanical strength and enhanced creep and recovery, whilst glycerol increased elongation and decreased modulus. There were competing interactions between the two dependent on concentration, and variation between machine and transverse properties was due to the extrusion induced molecular orientation of amylose. The optimum concentrations of borax and glycerol needed to achieve higher elongation, tensile strength, modulus and creep recovery than a control was found to be approximately 0.5% and 10%, respectively.

Generalized two-dimensional (Gen2D) correlation analysis and hybrid correlation analysis have been applied to a series of dynamic (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra to monitor the in vivo metabolic changes of the plant pathogen Phytophthora palmivora in the presence and absence of phosphonate over an 18-h period. Results indicate that phosphonate exposure causes cleavage in organism polyphosphate chains as well as an increase in total sugar phosphates. In the presence of phosphonate, the NMR resonances attributed to terminal polyphosphate phosphorus reduced at a lower rate than those of middle polyphosphate phosphorus, indicating a change in average chain length and suggesting cleavage in the middle of the chain as well as at the ends. The correlation analysis techniques serve to identify and confirm spectral regions undergoing major change in the time-series data and facilitate the analysis of these dynamic changes.

Fluvial dissolved Fe concentrations decrease upon mixing with seawater, resulting in the formation of Fe-floccules. However, a clear understanding of the fate of these floccules has yet to be established. Assessing how tidal processes affect the formation of Fe-colloids in the Leirarvogur estuary, SW Iceland, is an important step in understanding the formation and potential deposition of estuarine Fe-rich minerals within this estuarine system. The Leirarvogur estuary drains predominately Fe-rich basalt, increasing the likelihood of detecting changes in Fe-phases. Fluvial waters and local lake waters that drain into the estuary were compared and the effects of seasonal changes were considered, in an attempt to understand how varying end-members and external factors play a role in Fe-rich mineral formation. Aqueous and colloidal Fe concentrations were found to be greater towards the head of the Leirarvogur estuary, suggesting that potential Fe-rich minerals and complexes are forming at sites of fluvial input. Increasing suspended colloidal Fe towards the estuary mouth suggests that Fe-colloids are readily transported seaward.
