Abstract

We investigate deep inelastic scattering from He-3 and H-3 within a conventional convolution treatment of binding and Fermi motion effects. Using realistic Faddeev wave functions together with a nucleon spectral function, we demonstrate that the free neutron structure function can be extracted in deep-inelastic scattering from A=3 mirror nuclei, with nuclear effects canceling to within 2% for x < 0.85., 13 pages, 4 figures, version to appear in Phys. Abstract

New measurements are reported on the deuteron spin structure function g_1^d. These results were obtained from deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV electrons on polarized deuterons in the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q^2 < 40 (GeV/c)^2. These are the first high dose electron scattering data obtained using lithium deuteride (6Li2H) as the target material. Extrapolations of the data were performed to obtain moments of g_1^d, including Gamma_1^d, and the net quark polarization Delta Sigma., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The ratio g1/F1 has been measured over the range 0.031 (GeV/c)2. A trend is observed for g1/F1 to decrease at lower Q2. Abstract

The design and operation of a double-arm 180° spectrometer system for elastic and inelastic electron scattering from deuterium is described. The system consisted of a chicane of dipole magnets to transport an incident electron beam to a target, an upstream QQQDD spectrometer with a bend angle of 65° to analyze backscattered electrons, a downstream QQQDDDD spectrometer with a bend angle of 66° to detect recoil particles produced at 0°, and a movable beam dump. The large acceptance of the system allowed measurements of the deuteron magnetic elastic B(Q2) and inelastic W1(v, Q2) structure functions at high momentum transfers. The performance is compared to the predictions of a Monte Carlo simulation program.
