Amount of H2S and SO2 were generated during the SCWG of sewage sludge. It is essential to reduce the sulfur concentration in syngas for depth utilization of syngas from SCWG of sewage sludge. The syngas desulfurization ability of five additives (KOH, K2CO3, NaOH, Na2CO3, AC) were tested and the result indicated that K2CO3 had the best syngas desulfurization effect while KOH could significantly promote the yield of syngas at 450 °C and 4% loading. Increasing KOH and K2CO3 loading to 12% could reduce around 90% of sulfur in syngas comparing to no additives. The XPS analysis results indicated that alkali additives promoted the cyclization and oxidation of unstable sulfur compounds in raw sludge, which can convert it into stable sulfur compounds such as thiophene, sulfone and sulfate. The sulfur in liquid was mainly in the forms of sulfate, and the effect of alkali and AC additive on sulfur in liquid was relatively weak.

In order to study the transformation and distribution of sulfur element during supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of sewage sludge, sulfur contained products in different phase were detected in batch reactor. The XPS analysis showed that organic sulfur was the main part of sulfur compounds in sewage sludge. On the other hand, inorganic sulfur was dominated by SiS2, and SiS2 was subsequently converted into SiO2 and H2S during SCWG. The increase of temperature promoted H2S and SO2 yield but reduced their concentration. The addition of KOH could reduce the yield and concentration of H2S and SO2. The minimum concentration of H2S and SO2 was observed at 450 °C with KOH addition, which was 1313.94 ppm and 698.03 ppm, respectively. Sulfur compound in liquid was mainly found in the form of sulfate and its concentration decreased with increasing temperature.

Waste sorting is being gradually implemented as a key measure for circular and sustainable development in China, food waste will be separately collected and separated from municipal solid waste (MSW), thus the plastic content in food waste also will be reduced. In this study, supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of food waste with different contents of plastic (0–3.5 wt%) was experimentally investigated to simulate the influence of waste sorting on the food waste treatment. The results showed that lower plastic content in food waste favored higher gas yield and gasification efficiencies. The highest H2 yield and total gas yield were 3.11 mol/kg and 8.41 mol/kg in the plastic-free case, respectively. When the plastic content decreased from 3.5 wt% to 0 wt%, the cold gas efficiency (CGE), carbon conversion efficiency (CE) and hydrogen gasification efficiency (HE) increased by 125.97%, 173.48% and 94.09%, respectively. However, lower plastic content negatively affected the quality of produced syngas through decreasing H2 mole fraction and LHV. The solid residues from SCWG of food waste with lower plastic content had higher ratio of fixed carbon to volatile matter (FC/VM). Based on the analysis of pyrolysis properties and combustion behavior, decreasing the plastic content in food waste helped to improve the thermal stability of solid residues. Moreover, lower plastic content resulted in a decrease of total organic carbon (TOC) concentration in liquid effluent, which is favorable for further treatment of liquid effluent.

Hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HFA) is high risk for the environment due to heavy metals leaching and other pollutants. Sintering treatment potentially reduces the mass and volume of HFA and immobilizes heavy metals in ceramic-like bodies. However, HFA contains a large amount of heavy metals, thus sintering at too high a temperature will lead to the volatilization of heavy metals. The low-temperature sintering behavior of HFA at different temperature (450 °C, 670 °C and 900 °C) and different atmospheres (21% O2, 47.3% O2, 60.5% O2 and 100% O2) was investigated in this study. The mass loss, morphology, bulk density, elemental composition, heavy metal leaching rate, and mineral phase transformation of sintered ash were experimentally tested. With increasing sintering temperature, more mass of HFA was lost and the leaching rate of heavy metals decreased. For instance, sintered at 450 °C, 670 °C and 900 °C under air, the mass losses were 4.30%, 6.58%, and 17.96%, the leaching rate of Pb were 19.37%, 2.74%, and 0.65%, respectively. Sintered ash became denser and formed ceramic-like particle due to thermal agglomeration and chemical reactions. The bulk density significantly increased, which was favorable to reduce space occupancy for fly ash landfill. Oxygen-rich atmosphere could make the fly ash denser and inhibit the volatilization and leaching of Pb. The obtained findings are beneficial for deep understanding of the sintering behavior of HFA at low-temperature.
