Young adulthood is a high-risk period for heavy drinking and binge eating, both of which can impact weight and lead to obesity. Examining motives for drinking alcohol and eating palatable foods may facilitate a more integrated understanding of these behaviors during the college years. The current study tested whether shared or distinct (i.e., behavior-specific) motivational mechanisms may explain the occurrence of reward-driven drinking and eating in young adults.A sample of college freshmen (N = 103) stratified by sex, race/ethnicity, and heavy drinking status were selected to participate. Participants completed questionnaires measuring alcohol use, eating behavior, and motives assessed by the Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised and Palatable Eating Motives Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) tested whether drinking and eating motives were better represented as single latent motives, or two behavior-specific motives. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the association between motivational factors and behaviors.Behavior-specific CFA models demonstrated stronger model fit and higher factor loadings than single motive models. SEM models indicated that eating to cope with negative emotions, to enhance positive experiences, to obtain social reinforcement, and to conform with peers were significantly associated with binge eating (p values .001). Enhancement and social drinking motives were significantly associated with number of weekly drinks (p values .001).While motives for drinking alcohol and eating palatable foods may satisfy common goals, findings suggest motivational mechanisms may be behavior-specific. Enhancement and social motives may be important factors to target in prevention programs for both drinking and binge eating.

Background Foods that increase obesity risk are ubiquitous in the US food environment. Such foods may be the target of hedonic eating, which may facilitate weight gain and lead to obesity. The study tested whether meal composition during an ad libitum buffet meal was associated with 1-year weight and percent body fat changes among healthy younger adults without obesity. Hyper-palatable foods (HPF) were the study focus; comparisons were conducted with high energy dense (HED) and ultra-processed foods (UPF). Design Younger adults without obesity (N = 82; 43% male; mean age 26.8) completed an ad libitum buffet meal and provided body composition measurements at baseline and 1-year follow up. Multiple regression models tested associations between the proportion of the target food consumed (HPF, HED, or UPF) during the ad libitum meal and 1) weight change and 2) percent body fat change. The proportion of HPF was characterized by HPF group, specifically carbohydrate and sodium (CSOD) foods or fat and sodium (FSOD) foods. Results Participants who consumed a greater proportion of CSOD HPF in their ad libitum buffet meals had significantly greater weight change (b = 0.354, p = .003) and percent body fat change (b = 0.247, p = .036) at 1-year follow up. In contrast, no significant associations were found between the proportion of FSOD HPF, HED, or UPF consumed and anthropometric outcomes (p values = .099-.938). Conclusions Eating a greater proportion of hyper-palatable CSOD foods ad libitum appears to be a pattern of hedonic eating, which may increase an individual's risk for weight and body fat gain in early adulthood.

We present a case study on Incitec Pivot Limited's (“IPL”) acquisition strategy during a major stock market swing to demonstrate how valuation aberrations can be leveraged to create long term value for shareholders. We discuss the management strategies, structures, and ideology of IPL and critically analyze its acquisition of Dyno Nobel Limited (“Dyno”). Furthermore, we highlight how IPL’s acquisition of Dyno transformed its business from an Australian based fertilizer company into the world’s 2nd largest explosives company - with operations in 13 countries, 21 major chemical facilities and around 5,000 employees.

OBJECTIVES: Examine the impact of a multiple-goal (MG) vs single-goal (SG) lifestyle interventions on gestational diet quality and hyper-palatable food consumption. METHODS: Pregnant women were randomized in two pilot trials to MG (n = 21) or SG (n = 16) vs usual care (UC; combined trials, n = 18). The 18-week MG intervention included lifestyle modifications, and the 12-week SG intervention focused only on increasing fiber (≥30 g/day). Interventions included weekly instruction by a registered dietitian, and primary aims were appropriate weight gain. Diet recalls were performed at baseline and study end. Diet quality was scored with three versions of the alternative healthy eating index, including adaptations for pregnancy (AHEI 2010, AHEI-P, and AHEI-P 2010). Foods were classified as hyper-palatable based on fat, carbohydrate, sugar, and sodium content using previously defined criteria, and reported as percentage of total calories (%HPF). One-way ANOVA, paired t-tests, and Pearson's correlations were performed. RESULTS: At baseline, no between group differences for diet quality were found. By the end of the study, all diet quality scores increased for SG (P 0.05). At baseline, %HPF was different between groups (MG > UC > SG, 82%, 57%, and 26%, respectively; P 0.05), leaving MG and SG similar in %HPF (80% & 74%, respectively) and higher than UC (65%, P = 0.024). The %HPF was negatively correlated with all diet quality scores at baseline (r = −0.37 to −0.42; P 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Interventions aimed to prevent excessive gestational weight gain showed improvements in diet quality. Hyper-palatable food consumption was negatively related to diet quality, yet neither intervention decreased %HPF. Focusing on increasing dietary fiber may allow for a targeted message with broad implications for diet quality, but more research is needed. Introduction The transition from high school to college is a developmentally sensitive period that is high-risk for the escalation of alcohol use. Although risky drinking is a common problem among freshmen, engagement in treatment services is very low. College alcohol interventions target drinking directly at a time when students may be uninterested in changing their drinking. Approaches that indirectly target drinking may be particularly effective. Behavioral activation (BA) is an intervention that indirectly addresses mental health conditions by guiding individuals to engage in reinforcing activities that align with their values (Lejuez et al., 2001). A pilot study of a BA intervention administered in a semester-long freshman orientation course reported a significant decrease in drinking-related problems compared to students in standard orientation course (Reynolds et al., 2011). Methods The cluster-randomized trial will test the efficacy of BA administered in a semester-long (16 week) freshman orientation course, compared to a standard orientation course in 540 freshmen spread over 36 course sections (18 sections each). A 5-month post-treatment assessment will measure durability of effects. Discussion The study will test a promising BA intervention that addresses factors limiting participation in other programs by targeting alcohol use indirectly and by integrating an intervention into college curriculum. This study represents a first step toward developing an intervention course that could be widely disseminated to address the persistent college drinking problem and its consequences. Objective Web-based brief alcohol intervention (WBI) programs have efficacy in a wide range of college students and have been widely disseminated to universities to address heavy alcohol use. In the majority of efficacy studies, web-based research assessments were conducted before the intervention. Web-based research assessments may elicit reactivity, which could inflate estimates of WBI efficacy. The current study tested whether web-based research assessments conducted in combination with a WBI had additive effects on alcohol use outcomes, compared to a WBI only. Methods Undergraduate students (n = 856) from universities in the United States and Canada participated in this online study. Eligible individuals were randomized to complete 1) research assessments + WBI or 2) WBI-only. Alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and protective behaviors were assessed at one-month follow up. Results Multiple regression using 20 multiply imputed datasets indicated that there were no significant differences at follow up in alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, or protective behaviors used when controlling for variables with theoretical and statistical relevance. A repeated measures analysis of covariance revealed a significant decrease in peak estimated blood alcohol concentration in both groups, but no differential effects by randomized group. There were no significant moderating effects from gender, hazardous alcohol use, or motivation to change drinking. Conclusions Web-based research assessments combined with a web-based alcohol intervention did not inflate estimates of intervention efficacy when measured within-subjects. Our findings suggest universities may be observing intervention effects similar to those cited in efficacy studies, although effectiveness trials are needed.

Background Periodization of exercise is a method typically used in sports training, but the impact of periodized exercise on health outcomes in untrained adults is unclear. Purpose This review aims to summarize existing research wherein aerobic or resistance exercise was prescribed to inactive adults using a recognized periodization method. Methods A search of relevant databases, conducted between January and February of 2014, yielded 21 studies published between 2000 and 2013 that assessed the impact of periodized exercise on health outcomes in untrained participants. Results Substantial heterogeneity existed between studies, even under the same periodization method. Compared to baseline values or non-training control groups, prescribing periodized resistance or aerobic exercise yielded significant improvements in health outcomes related to traditional and emerging risk factors for cardiovascular disease, low-back and neck/shoulder pain, disease severity, and quality of life, with mixed results for increasing bone mineral density. Conclusions Although it is premature to conclude that periodized exercise is superior to non-periodized exercise for improving health outcomes, periodization appears to be a feasible means of prescribing exercise to inactive adults within an intervention setting. Further research is necessary to understand the effectiveness of periodizing aerobic exercise, the psychological effects of periodization, and the feasibility of implementing flexible non-linear methods.

The DSM specifies categorical criteria for psychiatric disorders. In contrast, a dimensional approach considers variability in symptom severity and can significantly improve statistical power. The current study tested whether a categorical, DSM-defined diagnosis of Alcohol Dependence (AD) was a better fit than a dimensional dependence measure for predicting change in alcohol consumption among heavy drinkers following a brief alcohol intervention (BI). DSM-IV and DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (AUD) measures were also evaluated.Participants (N=246) underwent a diagnostic interview after receiving a BI, then reported daily alcohol consumption using an Interactive Voice Response system. Dimensional AD was calculated by summing the dependence criteria (mean=4.0; SD=1.8). The dimensional AUD measure was a summation of positive Alcohol Abuse plus AD criteria (mean=5.8; SD=2.5). A multi-model inference technique was used to determine whether the DSM-IV categorical diagnosis or dimensional approach would provide a more accurate prediction of first week consumption and change in weekly alcohol consumption following a BI.The Akaike information criterion (AIC) for the dimensional AD model (AIC=7625.09) was 3.42 points lower than the categorical model (AIC=7628.51) and weight of evidence calculations indicated there was 85% likelihood that the dimensional model was the better approximating model. Dimensional AUD models fit similarly to the dimensional AD model. All AUD models significantly predicted change in alcohol consumption (p's=.05).A dimensional AUD diagnosis was superior for detecting treatment effects that were not apparent with categorical and dimensional AD models.

Young adulthood is a sensitive developmental period that is high-risk for weight gain. Ample research has focused on weight gain among college students; however meta-analyses report2 kg pooled estimates of weight gain, which is in the range of normal weight fluctuation, and there is disagreement in the literature regarding common predictors of weight gain. These limitations pose a major barrier to targeted obesity prevention efforts. The present study reviewed the literature assessing college weight gain with a focus on three methodological factors that could contribute to variability in the literature: 1) use of an evidence-supported definition of weight gain (2 kg or ≥3%); 2) weight measurement protocols; and 3) including weight/BMI in analyses of predictors of weight change.Three databases were systematically searched. Studies were included in the review if the primary goal was to determine magnitude of weight change and/or test predictors of weight change during the academic year, and they reported weight at 2+ time points.A total of 81 studies were included in the review. Most studies (90%; 73/81) did not use an evidence-supported definition of weight gain. Studies that used an evidence-supported definition reported estimates of gain among students who gained weight to be beyond the range of normal weight fluctuation (4.0-7.5 kg), and occurred in a subset (32%) of participants. Studies that did not use an evidence-supported definition reported weight gain to be 2.0-4.5 kg, and occurred in the majority50% of students. Most studies that measured height and weight (71%; 42/59) did not use a fasting protocol and the majority (63%; 37/59) did not conduct measurements at the same time of day. A higher percentage of studies that used a standardized measurement protocol reported weight change2 kg (44% vs 20%). A lower percentage of studies that used a standardized measurement protocol had substantial variability in weight change estimates (50% vs 69%). The majority of studies that tested predictors of weight gain (74%; 42/57) included weight/BMI as a covariate in analyses.The body of literature examining weight change among college students suffers from limitations that may have contributed to overestimations in the percent of students who gain weight, and simultaneous underestimations of the magnitude of weight gain among those who gain weight. Weight gain may be limited to approximately 30% of students in a sample, and weight gain among this subset of students may be substantial (4 kg). Going forward, use of both an evidence-supported weight gain definition and fasting measurement protocol will likely enhance accuracy in characterizing weight gain among college students, as well as improve researchers' ability to detect important predictors of weight gain.

The current pilot study evaluated feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a therapeutic Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system (“The Recovery Line”) for patients receiving methadone maintenance who continue to use illicit drugs. Patients were randomized (N=36) to four weeks of Treatment-as-Usual (TAU) or Recovery Line plus TAU. Ratings of The Recovery Line were high and remained stable throughout the study. Nonlinear phenomena play a crucial role in applied mathematics and physics. Analytic solutions of nonlinear equations are of fundamental importance and various methods for obtaining analytic solutions have been proposed. In this paper an application of the Adomian decomposition method is introduced for solving nonlinear fractional equations. The results reveal that the proposed method is very effective and simple and leads to accurate, approximately convergent solutions of nonlinear equations.

Current applications require an understanding of the relationships that exist between the functional characteristics of composite material systems and the long-term behavior of those materials under mechanical loading. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, a method was established and used to characterize damage initiation and progression in thin woven glass/epoxy composites. Monitoring the evolution in residual strength due to out of plane bending fatigue, a relationship was established between impedance at different frequencies of excitation and the development of damage in the material. When compared to common methods of measuring change in physical properties or visual damage, the metrics defined by impedance spectroscopy measurements were found to show larger, more consistent, and clearer distinctions as damage developed.

Several lines of evidences indicate that antidepressants produce various immunomodulatory effects. Fluoxetine, an antidepressant and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, modulates immune cells in vitro. To explore the in vivo influence of fluoxetine on lymphocytes, male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated daily, 10 mg/kg, or with saline solution for 1, 2 and 3 weeks. The presence of serotonin transporter in CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ subpopulations of T lymphocytes was determined by immunofluorescence. Serotonin transporter was also labeled with [(3)H]paroxetine, specific binding defined with imipramine. Plasma levels of pro-inflammatory interleukin 2 (IL-2), and anti-inflammatory interleukin 4 (IL-4), were measured by ELISA; and cAMP concentration by radioimmunoassay. Fluoxetine significantly increased the number of lymphocytes expressing serotonin transporter and elevated the binding of [(3)H]paroxetine. The percentage of CD4+ cells decreased, that of CD8+ increased, and CD3+ did not change. The ratio CD4+/CD8+ was significantly lowered. Fluoxetine administration elevated the levels of IL-4 at 1, 2 and 3 weeks; and of IL-2, at 2 and 3 weeks. IL-4/IL-2 ratio was significantly increased in fluoxetine group respecting the controls and was similar during the 3 weeks of treatment. Fluoxetine produced a significant decrease in cAMP concentrations in lymphocytes, probably by secondary activation of serotonin receptors. Treatment with fluoxetine modified immune parameters in plasma and lymphocytes of rats, which might be relevant for its systemic therapeutic action as an antidepressant.

Modifications of lymphocyte serotonergic system have been described in major depression. The aim of this study was to determine new possible changes of this system in depression. Twenty eight patients, free of drugs, diagnosed with major depression disorder by Structured Clinical Interview for Disorders of Axis I, without medical illnesses, written consent, approved by Ethical Committees were included. Controls were 30 healthy subjects without family history of psychiatric disease. Blood monocytes were isolated with Ficoll/Hypaque, and lymphocytes by differential adhesion to plastic. Serotonin and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid determined by HPLC. Monocytes had higher serotonin concentrations than lymphocytes, and serotonin/5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid was lower in patients. Basal proliferation was elevated in depressed and not increased by Concanavalin A. Fluoxetine reduced basal proliferation more efficiently in patients, indicating activation of lymphocytes in depression. The number of cells expressing serotonin transporter was reduced in depressed. There were no differences in CD4+ (approximately 50%) or CD8+ (approximately 25%) lymphocytes between the groups, although CD8+ were lower in depressed, and greater number of them co-localized serotonin transporter than CD4+, which could be crucial for function in relation to serotonin and its receptors in immune cells. Lymphocytes were activated in this group of patients and fluoxetine reduced proliferation, probably being relevant for the psychopharmacological treatment of depression.

Small-world topology has been used to build lattices of nonlinear fuzzy systems. Chaotic units, ruled by linguistic description and with specified Lyapunov exponent, have been realized and connected using linear diffusion coefficient. The dynamic features of the networks versus the number of systems connected have been investigated to underline phenomena like spatiotemporal chaos and complete regularization. The synchronization characteristics in case of sparse long-term connections and the performances comparison with regular and random network configurations are shown.

Three experiments evaluated the performance of broilers fed sorghum ergot consisting of sphacelia/sclerotia of Claviceps africana present in tailings removed by conditioning of seed from grain sorghum hybrid seed production fields near Uvalde (Experiments 1 and 2) and Dumas (Experiment 3), Texas. Percentage sphacelia/sclerotia and total alkaloid content, respectively, in sorghum ergot tailings were 8% and 11.3 ppm for Uvalde and 75% and 235 ppm for Dumas. Sorghum ergot and control sorghum diets were based on the NRC (1994) requirements for starting broilers. In Experiment 1, neither growth nor feed efficiency were significantly reduced in male broilers fed sorghum ergot from hatch to 3 wk of age, but liver weights were significantly greater than those in the control. In Experiment 2, straight-run broilers were raised to 6 wk of age in floor pens using a three-phase feeding program. Sorghum ergot significantly reduced gain in 4-wk-old broilers and cumulative body weight at 5 wk. Feed conversion was significantly reduced during all three phases of feeding. In Experiment 3, control sorghum and the 75% ergot tailings were added to corn-soy basal diets at rates of 2.5, 5, and 10% by weight and fed to male broilers from hatch to 3 wk of age. Sorghum ergot did not significantly reduce growth, but, during Weeks 2 and 3, feed-to-gain ratios were higher. Neither type nor concentration of sorghum ergot significantly affected relative liver weights. We did not observe significant mortality or obvious symptoms of ergot toxicity, such as necrotic lesions of the feet or vesicular dermatitis of the comb, in any of the three experiments.
