Abstract

The present study examined the reliability and validity of the Italian translation of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS-P) in a clinical sample of 268 consecutively admitted psychotherapy patients (43.3% male; mean age = 40.48 ( SD = 12.52); 38.8% inpatient). The Italian UPPS-P replicated the internal consistency coefficients of the original UPPS-P (0.84 to 0.92 across the five subscales). Moreover, confirmatory factor analyses evidenced an adequate fit for the a-priori five-factor model of the scale (WLSMV CFA χ 2 (1642) = 2833.06, p p > .10; CFI = .90; TLI = .90). Furthermore, the UPPS-P scales were significantly related to the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 total score ( rs = 0.23 to 0.60 across the five scales). Finally, the five UPPS-P scales showed distinct associations with domain scores and interview-based dimensional scores of personality disorders. These findings suggest that the Italian version of the UPPS-P can be considered a valid and reliable alternative to the original UPPS-P and can be a useful diagnostic tool in a clinical sample.

Abstract

In this study we present a clinical application of the STEPPS model in an Italian sample of severely affected patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or personality disorder (PD) with prominent borderline features in comorbidity with a mood disorder. The aims of this work are: 1) to confirm our preliminary results in a larger sample and at a 12-month follow-up, and 2) to identify predictors of drop-out vs completion of STEPPS in order to understand which characteristics of patients make them suitable or not for this treatment. The sample is composed of 32 subjects recruited from a population of inpatients of the Mood Disorders Center, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Hospital San Raffaele-Turro, Milan. To confirm STEPPS efficacy at 12-month follow-up, we selected the following outcome criteria: reduction in the number of hospitalizations related to self-harm acts; reduction in the number of suicidal attempts; reduction of perceived emotional intensity levels; changes in cognitive filter scores; changes in the scores on self-report questionnaires. To identify predictors of drop-out vs completion, we analysed the following variables: demographic features (sex, marital status, school level achieved, and job status); Axis-I diagnosis; Axis-II categorical and dimensional diagnosis; and personality features. Seventeen (53%) subjects completed the treatment successfully. The drop-out rate was 47%. Patients who completed the program show a significant decrease in the number of hospitalizations, both at the end of the treatment and at 12-month follow-up. Friedman ANOVA test shows a significant decrease in suicidal attempts during and after STEPPS, and at 12-month follow-up. Analysis of drop-outs showed no significant differences with regard to sex, marital status, school level and job status between the two groups. Axis-I and Axis-II categorical diagnoses did not discriminate between the two groups. Those patients who dropped differ significantly from completers in histrionic personality traits and magical thinking index, given by the interaction between low scores in Self-Directedness and high scores in Self-Transcendence.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to test the mediator role of impulsivity, sensation seeking, and proactive and reactive aggression on the relationship between childhood Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms and antisocial behavior in a sample of 729 Italian high school students. Although significant mediation effects were observed for impulsivity and sensation seeking, a complete mediation effect was observed only for proactive aggression. The results of this study confirm and extend previous findings suggesting that selected personality traits may represent risk factors for developing antisocial behavior in adolescence/adulthood in subjects with a history of ADHD.

To assess the replicability and age consistency of the taxonic structure and base-rate of schizotypy, 803 university students (21.9 years) and 929 high school students (16.4 years) were administered three self-report measures of schizotypal personality. The two groups came from the same town and were matched on gender. MAXCOV analyses were consistent with a low base-rate taxon of approximately 10% only in the university student group; in the younger group, the three schizotypal personality measures did not show clear evidence of taxonicity. These findings support the hypothesis of the taxonic structure of schizotypal personality in adult subjects, but they raise questions concerning the identification of schizotypy in younger samples.

Abstract

This study used a multi-sample, multiple-instrument strategy to evaluate the hypothesis that schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is taxonic. In Study 1, 721 consecutively admitted inpatients and outpatients were evaluated with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Personality Disorders (SCID-II) and the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+ (PDQ-4+). The data from both questionnaire types were submitted to multivariate normal mixture analysis, which was carried out on factor scores obtained from a three-factor model of SPD criteria; these results supported the hypothesis that SPD is taxonic. The same was true of Study 2, which administered the Semi-structured Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders (SIDP-R) to an independent sample of 537 consecutively admitted outpatients. Similar findings were observed in Study 3, in which the SIDP-R was administered to 225 non-clinical subjects. The results show that the typology of DSM III-R and -IV SPD diagnosis is consistent with the latent structure of SPD features.

Abstract

This study examines impulsivity and aggressiveness dimensions as predictors of borderline (BPD) and antisocial (ASPD) personality disorder symptoms in nonclinical subjects. A total of 747 undergraduate university students were administered the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11, and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that motor impulsiveness, irritability, resentment, and guilt predicted BPD symptoms among university students after controlling for the effect of ASPD and depressive symptoms. ASPD symptoms were predicted by motor impulsiveness, physical aggression, indirect aggression, and negativism. These results indicate that in nonclinical subjects BPD and ASPD symptoms share a common impulsivity dimension but are linked to different aggressiveness facets.

Abstract

Three factors are hypothesized to underlie schizotypal personality in the general population, but few data are currently available concerning its invariance across age and gender. This study tests the hypothesis that this three-factor structure is invariant across both age and gender. The Italian translation of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) was administered to a sample of 929 Italian high school students aged 16 years, and to a sample of 803 Italian university students aged 22 years. The two samples differed by age, but were balanced on gender. Principal component analyses confirmed the three-factor model of cognitive-perceptual, interpersonal, and disorganized features. Younger subjects had higher SPQ scores than older subjects. Females were characterized by higher scores on ideas of reference and excessive social anxiety, while males scored higher on no close friends, constricted affect, and odd behavior. As a whole, these results indicate that the three-factor model of schizotypal personality is invariant across age and gender, and encourage investigation of the differential correlates of these factors to better understand the mechanisms underlying schizotypal personality. The results of this study also support prior findings of gender differences in schizotypy scores.

Abstract

To assess the reliability and validity of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS), 759 Italian undergraduate students were administered the Italian version of the WURS. In this sample, the WURS showed good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach alpha = .888). Both 1-week (r = .981, P < .001) and 2-month (r = .924, P < .001) retest reliabilities were satisfactory. The mother/subject agreement on the WURS total score was large: intraclass r = .883, P < .001. The principal component (PC) analysis showed the presence of three positively correlated first-order PCs, and one second-order PC. This PC structure of the WURS was replicated in an independent sample of 300 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients and outpatients. Finally, in a sample of 132 secondary school students, the WURS showed a moderate correlation with the Conners Abbreviated Parent and Teacher Questionnaire (CAPTQ): r = .307, P < .001. In this sample, the WURS total score was negatively correlated with school performance (rho = −.460, P < .001) and conduct (rho = −.293, P < .005) indexes.
