The aim of this work was to determine the free fluoride and silver ion concentrations and the alkalinity of 4 commercially available 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solutions.Four common brands of 38% SDF solutions, namely Saforide, Advantage Arrest, e-SDF, and Topamine, were selected. Three bottles of each brand of SDF solution from the same lot were assessed. Measurements of the silver and fluoride content and alkalinity were performed directly when a bottle was opened. Each measurement was repeated to recheck its reliability. The free fluoride ion concentrations were measured using a calibrated ion-selective electrode. The free silver ion concentrations were measured using optical emission spectrometry. The alkalinity of the SDF solution was determined with a pH electrode.The mean concentrations of fluoride ions of the Saforide, Advantage Arrest, e-SDF, and Topamine were 43,233 ppm, 44,333 ppm, 51,370 ppm, and 54,400 ppm, respectively; their percentage differences from the expected value (44,800 ppm) were 3.5%, 2.4%, 14.7%, and 21.4%, respectively. The mean concentrations of silver ions of the Saforide, Advantage Arrest, e-SDF, and Topamine were 258,841 ppm, 260,016 ppm, 336,149 ppm, and 319,966 ppm, respectively; their percentage differences from the expected value (253,900 ppm) were 3.2%, 5.8%, 32.4%, and 25.9%, respectively. The 4 products had pH values of 9.2, 9.1, 9.2, and 9.0, respectively.This study showed differences between the claimed and measured fluoride and silver ion concentrations in 4 common 38% SDF products, which were alkaline with a pH value of 9.

This study assessed the influence of chitosan nanoparticles on the fluoride-releasing ability of 4 glass ionomer cement (GIC) through an in vitro analysis.Four types of GIC (type II light cure universal restorative, type II universal restorative, GC Fuji VII, and type IX) were modified with nanochitosan particles; 10% chitosan was added to the glass ionomer liquid. Six specimens for each of the 4 groups were created, using expendable Teflon moulds. Discs of each type of GIC (n = 6) were immersed in deionised water at various time intervals. Electrodes selective for fluoride ions were employed to analyse the amount of released fluoride at 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days.Chitosan-modified GICs showed greater fluoride release than conventional GICs at all time points. All samples showed an initial high release of fluoride that tapered off with time. The total amount of fluoride released increased from the 1st day to the 28th day on adding chitosan to all the 4 types of GIC. Amongst those, type IX high-strength posterior extra with chitosan released a considerably higher quantity of fluoride at all time intervals.In all the experimental groups, adding chitosan to the glass ionomer liquid had an accelerating effect on its fluoride-releasing property.

The objectives of this study were to compare the amount of fluoride delivered via a topical application of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution and 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish as well as to determine the amount of 38% SDF solution delivered using various micro-applicators.The weights of 38% SDF (Saforide) and 5% NaF (Duraphat) applied to the occlusal surface of an extracted human upper first premolar with a regular-size (2.50-mm tip diameter) micro-applicator were measured using an electronic-analytical balance. Afterwards, the weight of 38% SDF applied to a premolar using the micro-applicators of 5 common brands (Premium Plus, 3M, Dentsply, Elevate Oral Care, and SDI) were studied. The tip diameter of each micro-applicator was measured under a microscope. The weights of the delivered fluoride and silver were also calculated.The mean weights of the fluoride delivered via the SDF solution and NaF varnish were 0.25 ± 0.07 mg and 0.49 ± 0.08 mg, respectively (P.001). In addition, the tip diameters of the micro-applicators ranged from 1.89 ± 0.03 mm to 2.76 ± 0.02 mm. The mean weights of the fluoride delivered per application of 38% SDF using different applicators ranged from 0.13 ± 0.06 mg to 0.30 ± 0.09 mg, whereas the mean weights of the silver ranged from 0.76 ± 0.32 mg to 1.68 ± 0.50 mg. The weights of the delivered 38% SDF solution varied with the brand and with the tip diameters of the dental micro-applicators (P.001).The fluoride of the 38% SDF solution delivered topically was significantly less than that of 5% NaF varnish. Moreover, the amount of SDF solution delivered depends on the brand and size of the micro-applicators.

Arsenite (As) and fluoride (F), both of which are linked to a variety of human ailments, are regularly found in underground drinking water. Numerous studies have shown that As and/or F have negative impacts on testicular function and fertility. For this purpose, mouse Leydig cells, the main cells responsible for the generation and regulation of steroid hormones such as testosterone, were used to reveal the effects of individual and combined exposure of As and F on the steroidogenic pathway in the male reproductive system. Leydig cells were treated with 0.39 μM (50 ppb) As and 0.0476 mM (2 ppm) F alone and in combination for 24 h. The findings revealed that As and/or F exposure induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in Leydig cells and altered antioxidant equilibrium of the cells by reducing superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase. Additionally, individual and combined administration of As and/or F significantly supressed the expression of both steroidogenic enzymes and the genes encoding these enzymes. In conclusion, this study showed that exposure to As and F at environmentally relevant concentrations dispersed by water decreased testosterone production in Leydig cells, an important cell of the male reproductive system. The deleterious effects of even the lowest concentrations of As and F elements that can reach humans from the environment on the Leydig cell, and therefore on male infertility, emphasize necessity new safe limits for these elements.

The present work-study the decreasing fluoride ions toxicity on the rat heart via loading them on the chitosan nanoparticles (Cs NPs) surface to form the biologically compatible composite (Cs@NaF). The obtained nanocomposite was characterized by different techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), zeta potential, and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The biochemical parameters in the albino rats perform, where twenty-eight male adult Sprague Dawley rats (average body weight of 150 ± 10 g) were obtained from the Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University, then acclimatized for two weeks before the experiment and divided into four groups in galvanized wire cages at room temperature (22-25 °C) with a 12-h photoperiod and fed a well-balanced commercial diet. The blood samples were obtained from the vena cava of the rat heart via estimation of the troponin T, Lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine phosphokinase. Also, immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM, and IgG) and hematological measurements have been performed on the rat heart. To express all of the data, the mean and standard error of the mean are utilized by (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's multiple comparison test. The modified chitosan with fluoride decreases the toxicity of fluoride via improving the rat heart function due to the presence of Cs NPs helped to mitigate some of the negative effects of fluoride therapy.

Dental decay is a highly prevalent chronic disease affecting people from all ages. Clinically, fluoride supplementation is the primary strategy in the prevention of dental decay. However, the current existing self-application formulations such as gels or mouthwashes are rapidly cleared after administration, resulting in modest efficacy even after repeated applications. Therefore, a user-friendly formulation that can provide sustained fluoride release in the oral cavity is of great interest for dental decay prevention. Herein, we report the utilization of fused deposition modelling to fabricate personalised mouthguards, which allow local and prolonged fluoride elution. Composite filaments comprising sodium fluoride and polymers with tuneable hydrophobicity were produced using blends of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(vinyl alcohol) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The materials exhibited suitable mechanical properties for dental devices as well as different release kinetics depending on their composition. Ex vivo studies were performed on decayed human teeth using the 3D printed tooth caps that precisely fit the complex geometries of each specimen. A significant elevation of fluoride content in the lesion mineral in contact with the PCL/PEG tooth caps was achieved compared to the ones in contact with solutions mimicking dental care products. In conclusion, this study suggested that a sustained localized drug release of fluoride from personalised 3D printed mouthguards at the device–enamel interface can improve the incorporation of fluoride in the tooth matrix and prevent lesion progression., Journal of Controlled Release, 348, ISSN:0168-3659, ISSN:1873-4995

The objective of this study was to evaluate the posttreatment effects of a school-based fluoride mouth-rinsing programme (FMR) on the prevalence of dental caries.We included 364 newly enrolled university students aged 20 to 25 years who were not in any FMR and 187 students who had previously participated in such programmes. We calculated the prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth and the mean decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (DMFS) according to sex, age, participation in FMR, and dental health behaviours. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyse the association between dichotomous variables (caries present or absent) and demographic data, participation in FMR, and dental health behaviours.The difference in the prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth between the subjects who participated in the FMR (51.3%) and those who did not (64.5%) was statistically significant. There were 39.6% fewer DMFS in the subjects who participated in the FMR at least during elementary school. The multivariate logistic regression model analysis demonstrated that subjects who participated in the FMR at least during elementary school were protected against dental caries as compared to those who did not. Age and sex were risk predictors of dental caries in adults, whilst other variables were not associated with dental caries.Participation in an FMR at least during elementary school is a predictor for the reduction in the prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth.

Transient inflammatory surface resorption, referred to as orthodontic induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR), is an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic tooth movement. Systemic fluoride has been associated with a reduction of OIIRR. This study aimed to investigate the effects of water fluoridation levels on OIIRR in a clinically applicable human orthodontic model.Twenty-eight patients who required bilateral maxillary first premolar extraction as part of orthodontic treatment were selected from 2 cities with high and low water fluoridation of ≥2 ppm and ≤0.05 ppm, respectively. Patients were separated into high fluoride (HF) and low fluoride (LF) groups on the basis of water fluoridation levels. Bilateral maxillary first premolar teeth were subjected to 150 g of buccal tipping forces for 12 weeks with reactivation every 4 weeks. Teeth were extracted at the end of 12 weeks. Root resorption crater volume was determined using microcomputed tomography and 3-dimensional reconstruction.HF group showed significantly less mean root resorption volume on the palatal root surface when compared with the LF group (P = 0.025). This difference was specifically displayed at palatal apical regions (P = 0.041). When root resorption volumes from the zones of orthodontic pressure (buccal cervical, palatal apical) were combined, the mean difference between HF and LF groups was statistically significant (P = 0.045).Findings of the present study indicated a positive correlation between water fluoridation and the reduction of OIIRR, especially at the zones of orthodontic pressure, using a clinically relevant human orthodontic model.

In this present investigation, aluminium (Al

Endemic fluorosis exists in almost all provinces of China. The long-term ingestion of groundwater containing high concentrations of fluoride is one of the main causes of fluorosis. We used artificial neural network to model the relationship between groundwater fluoride concentrations from throughout China and environmental variables such as climatic, geological. and soil parameters as proxy predictors. The results show that the accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model in the test dataset are 80.5% and 0.86%, respectively, and climatic variables are the most effective predictors. Based on the artificial neural network model, a nationwide prediction risk map of fluoride concentrations exceeding 1.5 mg/L with a 0.5 × 0.5 arc minutes resolution was generated. The high risk areas are mainly located in western provinces of Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, and Sichuan, and the northern provinces of Inner Mongolia, Hebei and Shandong. The total number of people estimated to be potentially at risk of fluorosis due to the use of untreated high fluoride groundwater as drinking water is about 89 million, or 6% of the population. The high fluoride groundwater risk map helps the authorities to prioritize areas requiring mitigation measures and thus facilitates the implementation of water improvement and defluoridation projects.

Excess fluoride in water poses a threat to ecology and human health, which has attracted global attention. In this study, a series of lanthanum-based metal–organic frameworks (La-MOFs) were synthesized by varying the organic ligands (i.e., terephthalic acid (BDC), trimesic acid (BTC), biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC), 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (BHTA), and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA)) to control the microscopic structure of the MOFs and subsequently apply them for the removal of fluoride in water. The maximum capture capacities of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC at 298 K are 105.2, 125.9, 145.5, 158.9, and 171.7 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption capacity is greater than most reported adsorbents. The adsorption isotherms of La-MOFs for fluoride are well fit to the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the kinetic rate-limiting step of adsorption is chemical adsorption. Thermodynamics revealed that temperature is favorable for the adsorption of fluoride. Meanwhile, La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC are suitable for the removal of fluoride in a relatively wide pH range (4.0–9.0). Simultaneously, from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange are identified as the main action mechanisms for the adsorption of fluoride of La-MOFs. The prepared La-MOFs are used as efficient adsorbents for removal of fluoride in actual water, indicating that they have great potential in removing fluoride in real and complex environmental water. This work provides a new strategy for designing adsorbents with adjustable microstructure and expected function to effectively recover fluorosis in water.

Composite restorations with calcium fluoride nanoparticles (nCaFThree nCaFBT and BTM nCaFNovel nCaF

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to examine physician and dentist fluoride prescription patterns and identify factors associated with fluoride prescriptions for Medicaid-enrolled children. The hypothesis is that dentists will be the primary prescribers of fluoride and that caries risk factors will be associated with fluoride prescriptions. METHODS: Data were analyzed for Oregon children aged 0–17 years enrolled in Medicaid for ≥300 days in both 2016 and 2017. The outcome variable was receiving a fluoride prescription in 2017. A 2-tailed chi-square test was used to assess fluoride prescribing differences between physicians and dentists. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the likelihood of receiving a fluoride prescription in 2017 and generate ORs. Model covariates included child’s age, sex, race, ethnicity, Medicaid plan type, previous fluoride prescription, previous restorative dental treatment, and water fluoridation status. RESULTS: Of 200,169 Medicaid-enrolled children, 6.7% (n=13,337) received fluoride prescriptions. Physicians were >3 times as likely to prescribe fluoride than dentists (73.4% vs 23.0%, p

Summary Drinking water is the primary source of fluoride intake for humans around the world. In southern Algeria, dental fluorosis is considered an epidemic that is spreading among the population by health professionals. Thus, the consumption of bottled water is important because it is considered safer for health. Objectives This study aims to determine the fluoride concentrations of bottled water commercially available in southern Algeria and report the non-carcinogenic health risk via daily human intake. Material and methods By 2021, 28 commercial brands were obtained from different supermarkets in Ouargla, Algeria. Fluoride was measured using a validated spectrophotometric method. The fluoride risk quotient (HQ) and the estimated daily intake (EDI) were calculated. Results All the brands did not mention the fluoride content on the label. The mean level was 0.40 ± 0.42 mg/L, and a wide range was found [0.00 to 1.65 mg/L]. The average was below the WHO standard. Most samples (75%, n=21) contained less than 0.50 mg/L, which can cause dental caries. The HQ values average ​​were less than 1, suggesting no health risk associated with drinking bottled water. Conclusion With the increasing consumption of bottled water, this work is important for primary prevention programs for dental caries. The main contribution is the constitution of a database concerning the fluoride levels in bottled water marketed in southern Algeria. Labelling of fluoride concentrations by manufacturers should be mandatory.

Corrosion of metal orthodontic appliances caused by professional fluoride products has been recently concerned. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic and genotoxic effect of these products on buccal mucosal cells from patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliances.A total of 44 patients, aged 12 to 35 years, who began orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances were included in this single-center, prospective, randomized clinical trial. Patients were randomly allocated into 4 parallel groups according to the type of professional fluoride treatment applied after placing the appliances: acidulated phosphate fluoride gel (APF); neutral fluoride gel (NGel); fluoride varnish (FVa); and without fluoride treatment (control). Buccal cells were collected before treatment (T1) and 3 months after appliance placement (T2). The cells were assayed for cell viability and underwent Papanicolaou staining. Cells with micronuclei and degenerative nuclear alterations were scored using a light microscope. Cell metal content was quantified by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test.The intracellular nickel content in the APF group significantly increased (P0.05), whereas that of the control, NGel, and FVa groups did not. The changes in chromium concentration in all groups were not significantly different compared with control. Use of APF resulted in a significantly higher decrease in cell viability and increase in morphologic signs of cell death compared with control (P0.05). The change in frequency of micronucleated cells was not significantly different from that in the control group.Applying APF gel on fixed orthodontic appliances increased the cell metal content and decreased cell viability; however, genotoxic effects were absent. FVa and NGel are suggested as the products of choice to use during orthodontic treatment.

Objective The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical species formed inside glass-ionomer cements after fluoride uptake and to investigate the depth of penetration of fluoride ions within the cement matrix. Methods An experimental fluoride-free glass with composition 2SiO2–AlO3–CaO was produced. The glass powder was mixed with aqueous poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and allowed to set. The resulting specimens were stored in 20 ml KF solution with 1000 ppm fluorine for 24 h and then placed into the same amount of water as for 24 h. A fluoride selective electrode was used to give the F concentration of the respective solutions. 19F MAS-NMR spectra were recorded on powdered cement specimens using a Bruker AVANCE-NEO 600 spectrometer. In addition, SEM observation and EDX chemical analysis were conducted on the cross-section of a carefully fractured specimen. Results Fluoride was shown to be mainly present in the surface layers of the specimen after placement in the KF solution, and only a small fraction was re-released into water. 19F NMR spectroscopy showed that AlF complexes were formed within the cement. Significance The fluoride taken up by a free-fluoride glass ionomer cement mostly occupies surface layers and is retained because it bonds to aluminum within the matrix. This finding explains why the majority of fluoride taken up by conventional glass ionomer cements is retained.

The promising adsorbent like graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS) and amine functionalized graphene oxide (AGO) decorated chitosan (CS) namely AGO@CS composite beads was efficiently prepared for defluoridation studies. The prepared AGO@CS composite beads possess enriched defluoridation capacity (DC) of 4650 mgF− kg−1. Batch method was used to optimize the maximum DC of AGO@CS composite beads. The physicochemical properties of AGO@CS composite beads were explored by numerous instrumental techniques viz., FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM and TGA investigation. The experimental values of AGO@CS composite beads for fluoride removal at various temperature conditions were assessed with adsorption isotherms, kinetic and thermodynamic studies. The possible defluoridation mechanism of AGO@CS beads was mostly proposed that electrostatic attraction. The reusability and field investigation results of AGO@CS beads shows they are regenerable and applicable at field circumstances.

A series of novel adsorbents composed of cellulose (CL) with Ca/Al layered double hydroxide (CCxA; where x represent the Ca/Al molar ratio) were prepared for the adsorption of antimony (Sb(V)) and fluoride (F−) ions from aqueous solutions. The CCxA was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), elemental analysis (CHNS/O), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA-DTA), zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis. The effects of varying parameters such as dose, pH, contact time, temperature and initial concentration on the adsorption process were investigated. According to the obtained results, the adsorption processes were described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Langmuir adsorption isotherm model provided the best fit for the experimental data and was used to describe isotherm constants. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 77.2 and 63.1 mg/g for Sb(V) and F−, respectively by CC3A (experimental conditions: pH 5.5, time 60 min, dose 15 mg/10 mL, temperature 298 K). The CC3A nanocomposite was able to reduce the Sb(V) and F− ions concentration in synthetic solution to lower than 6 μg/L and 1.5 mg/L, respectively, which are maximum contaminant levels of these elements in drinking water according to WHO guidelines.

The current study aimed at examining a fluoride containing bioactive glass (BiominF®) paste as a temporary filling material capable of remineralizing the demineralized enamel or dentin, and its ability to decrease a simulated dentinal fluids pressure on the resin/dentin interface, without affecting the shear bond strength of a universal bonding agent to enamel and dentin.60 premolars were utilized for the acid resistance, trans-microradiography (TMR) and shear bond strength (SBS) experiments. Enamel and dentin discs were demineralized for 4 days to create a subsurface demineralized zone followed by applying BiominF® paste, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride, or a temporary filling material for 24 h. 30 extracted human non-carious third molars were utilized for the pulpal pressure experiment in which direct communication to the pulp chamber was created by cutting at a level approximately 1 mm below the cemento-enamel junction while the coronal enamel was ground to expose mid coronal dentin. The dentin surface was exposed to a simulated pulpal pressure. The dentin surfaces had BiominF® paste, an oxalate desensitizing agent, or temporary filling material followed by application of a universal adhesive system.One way ANOVA showed that BiominF® paste remineralized effectively the demineralized enamel or dentin, did not affect the bond strength of the enamel and dentin surfaces to the tested adhesive system p0.05, and improved the acid resistance of the demineralized enamel and dentin against a secondary erosive challenge. Moreover, BiominF® paste decreased the nanoleakage expression in the dentin/adhesive interface exposed to a simulated pulpal pressure.BiominF® paste may serve as a temporary filling material that may improve the longevity of adhesive restorations and help to conserve tooth structures by preserving the demineralized enamel and dentin form cutting during cavity preparation.

Objectives: To evaluate the remineralising effects of fluoride (F) varnishes containing bioavailable calcium-phosphate compound (Ca-P) based remineralisation systems and 5000 ppm F toothpaste (FTP) on root caries lesions (RCLs) and the potential effects of proanthocyanidin (PA) for the treatments of RCLs when used as an adjunct to F regimens. Methods: Demineralised root dentine and a pH-cycling model were used to mimic RCLs and the oral environment. Remineralising effects of MI VarnishTM (MIV) containing casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and Clinpro™ White Varnish (CPWV) containing tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) along with FTP and PA were evaluated regarding the birefringence, elemental composition, mechanical properties and mineral density of remineralised dentine with DuraphatTM as a comparison. Results: MIV, CPWV and DuraphatTM promoted the incorporation of F into RCLs and increased mineral density but did not change microhardness of root dentine significantly. Surface microhardness increased significantly when MIV or CPWV was used with 5000 ppm FTP. Application of PA with F regimens significantly increased subsurface mineral density. When PA was applied with MIV or CPWV along with FTP, the highest ion uptake and relative mineral gain (%ΔZ) was achieved, and significant increase of microhardness was up to 30 μm depth. Generally, MIV was associated with a higher mineral content gain than CPWV. Significance: Treatment of carious root surfaces remains challenging due to the complex pathological processes and difficulty in restoring the highly organised structure of root dentine. Treatment strategies targeting both remineralisation and preservation of the dentinal organic matrix have the potential to improve the fluoride-mediated remineralisation approaches.

Aim The aim of this study was to systematically review and analyse the difference in efficacy of stannous fluoride toothpaste formulations in comparison to other fluoridated toothpastes without stannous fluoride. Materials and methods A systematic search of the literature was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. A search strategy was developed to answer the study question and was performed in PubMed-Medline databases. Inclusion criteria were randomised controlled clinical trials comparing stannous fluoride toothpaste formulations with other fluoridated toothpastes not containing stannous fluoride. Results The search in PubMed-Medline databases resulted in 384 articles; 23 articles were downloaded for review, 16 articles were included in the report and six could be used for meta-analysis. All studies were randomised controlled clinical trials that compared clinical outcomes between toothpastes with stannous fluoride combinations and toothpastes with only fluoride. The overall results of the 16 studies favoured the stannous fluoride formulations. However, in a meta-analysis of the randomised controlled clinical trials, it was demonstrated that stannous fluoride toothpaste formulations provided significantly better outcomes based on the Gingival Index (SMD -0.14, 95% CI -0.20, -0.07, P = 0.0001), but not the Modified Gingival Index (SMD -0.30, 95% CI -0.7, 0.09, P = 0.13). Practical implications The antibacterial properties of stannous seem to provide favourable results when formulated with a fluoridated toothpaste. This systematic review highlights the lack of homogenous research available to rigorously compare stannous fluoride toothpaste formulations with other fluoridated toothpastes without stannous fluoride.

Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of quercetin on the acid resistance of human dentin through both laboratory and clinical studies. Methods Two hundred and twelve dentin blocks (2 mm × 2 mm × 2 mm) were prepared and used. For the laboratory study, dentin specimens were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 12): deionized water, ethanol, 1.23 × 104 μg/ml sodium fluoride (NaF), 120 μg/ml chlorhexidine, 183.2 μg/ml epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and 75 μg/ml, 150 μg/ml, and 300 μg/ml quercetin (Q75, Q150, and Q300). The specimens were treated with the respective solutions for 2 min and then subjected to in vitro erosion (4 cycles/d for 7 d). The surface microhardness loss (%SMHl), erosive dentin wear, and surface morphology were evaluated and compared. For the impact on MMP inhibition, the release of crosslinked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) and the thickness of the demineralized organic matrix (DOM) were measured using additional dentin specimens. For the clinical study, the specimens were treated with NaF or Q300 for 2 min and then subjected to in vivo erosion (4 cycles/d for 7 d). The %SMHl and erosive dentin wear of the specimens were measured to determine whether quercetin similarly inhibits erosion in situ. The objective of this manuscript was to demonstrate the efficacy of silicon supplementation in relieving the fluoride-induced damages in rice cultivar, Khitish. The exposure of seedlings to two different concentrations of fluoride, viz., 25 and 50 mg L−1 NaF caused increase in fluoride accumulation, as a result of which the seedlings suffered severe oxidative stress, as evident from growth inhibition, reduction in seed germination, tissue biomass, root and shoot length, decline in chlorophyll content, increases in electrolyte leakage, H2O2 content, lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde content and lipoxygenase activity), protein carbonylation and protease activity. The extent of damage was more at higher fluoride concentration. Silicon amendment, irrespective of fluoride concentrations, led to large build-up of endogenous silicon level and brought considerable improvement in all the parameters examined with respect to fluoride stress. The fluoride-mediated enhancement in methylglyoxal level was lowered by silicon, because of the prominent activation of glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II. While the stress-mediated induction in antioxidative enzymes like GPOX, APX, SOD, GPX and GR was lowered by silicon, the inhibition in CAT activity was relieved. The antioxidative defense mechanism was also boosted up via enhanced content of total phenolics and carotenoids. However, the fluoride-mediated increase in anthocyanins, flavonoids, xanthophyll, ascorbate and reduced glutathione, and osmolytes like total amino acids, proline and glycine-betaine, were all lowered in presence of silicon, together with reduced PAL and P5CS activity. Overall, silicon reduced oxidative damages to develop fluoride-tolerant rice plants through augmentation of different antioxidant and osmolyte defense and methylglyoxal detoxification system.

Local fluoride contamination and bacterial infections in potable water have dangerous effects on the human body and are today a global concern. In this study, we have synthesized a pH-responsive bifunctional biopolymer nanocomposite (HAZ) of humic acid with incorporating aluminum zirconium bimetallic oxide by deep freeze–drying method. Fast nucleation and interconnection of nanoparticles form a highly porous network because of sublimation of frozen HAZ. This duo nanocomposite has efficiently worked for fluoride removal and showed potent antibacterial activity against the Escherichia coli Gram-negative and Staphylococcus aureus Gram-positive bacteria. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis demonstrates that the hydroxyl groups act as a pivot in the ion exchange process of adsorption, each element of bimetallic oxide primarily takes part in the adsorption mechanism. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 180.62 mg/g at pH seven. Thermodynamic parameters like Gibbs free energy change (ΔG0), entropy (ΔS0), and enthalpy (ΔH0) indicate that the process was endothermic, feasible, and taken place by a chemisorption mechanism. This is the first novel freeze–dried bifunctional biopolymer nanocomposite composed of humic acid natural polymer incorporated with Al–Zr metal oxide, and it exhibited three times higher adsorption efficacy with excellent antibacterial action at a concentration of 5 µg/mL of the nanocomposite.

Summary Introduction Effects of different oral hygiene controls on force kinetics of memory elastic chains are not assessed adequately or in the case of many oral care products, non-existent. This study assessed these. Material and methods This in-vitro study was performed on 647 observations of 132 elastic chains assessed at 5 intervals. In each of the treatments (artificial saliva, fluoride, OralB mouthrinse, whitening OralB mouthrinse, toothpaste, and whitening toothpaste), 11 memory and 11 conventional chains were tested. Chains were stretched for 100%; their initial force was measured (g), and immersed in artificial saliva at 37 °C. For treatments other than artificial saliva, the specimens were removed from the saliva twice daily and the main treatment was applied. After washing with distilled water, they were immersed back in artificial saliva. At the days 1st, 7th, 14th, and 28th, their force was re-measured. Data were analysed statistically (α = 0.05). Results Force degradation of elastic chains was observed in both memory/conventional types (P = 0.000) although memory chains showed slightly less declines especially in the beginning days. The interaction of treatment and time was significant (P = 0.000) meaning that different treatments caused different rates of force decay, with fluoride having the fastest drop rate followed by whitening toothpaste. However, the difference among 5 intervals of time was not significant (P = 0.569). When elastic types were assessed separately, this variable as well became significant (P ≤ 0.002). One-sample t-test showed that all final residual forces (28th day) were either above 150 g or at its level. Conclusion Chain force degrades over time but stays sufficient for bodily tooth movement after 4 weeks. Memory chains are preferable as they provide greater forces for longer durations. Fluoride mouthwash followed by whitening toothpaste cause the most rapid declines. Both chain types still retained adequate forces after 4 weeks, even after treatment with fluoride or whitening toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE This systematic literature review and meta-analysis compared the clinical retention of primed or adhesively bonded sealants to that of conventional sealant materials. METHODS A search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL databases identified 3707 abstracts published prior to 12/31/2017, of which 335 clinical publications were analysed in detail. A total of 67 studies included information about sealant retention after 24, 36, or 60 months of follow-up. A meta-analysis using a random effects model was conducted to calculate the pooled estimate of the retention rates for the five groups of sealants. Subgroup moderator analysis was performed to compare the pooled retention rate estimate (RRE) of primed sealants against those of the other groups. RESULTS Primed sealants had a 2-year pooled RRE of 43.2% (95% CI: 30.5-55.8), which was significantly inferior to those of auto-polymerizing (80.8%, 95% CI: 72.2-89) and light-polymerizing sealants (68.4%, 95% CI: 60.2-76.7). Fluoride-releasing and light-polymerizing sealants had the highest 3-year pooled RREs (86.4%, 95% CI: 73.4-99.3 and 83.1%, 95% CI: 75.6-90.7, respectively). SIGNIFICANE The results of this meta-analysis suggest that primed sealants cannot be fully recommended for clinical practice due to their moderate survival rates. Auto-polymerizing, light-polymerizing and fluoride-releasing sealants continue to be considered the reference standards for pit and fissure sealants. However, future generations and developments of primed sealant materials may change this position.

Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of 5% sodium fluoride varnish on caries in first permanent molars and to assess the suitability of using this method to control caries among children in rural areas of Guangxi province, China. Methods: A total of nine schools with 32 classes were selected by simple random sampling. There were 999 students in the experimental group and 1,004 in the control group. The experimental group received oral health education and topical application of 5% sodium fluoride varnish, while the control group received oral health education only. Dental examinations were performed in November 2014 and November 2017, and the modified International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-II) was used to record the caries status of the first permanent molars. The data were entered into SPSS 22 for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 1,748 students (853 in the experimental group and 895 in the control group) completed the study. After 3 years of intervention, the experimental group had a lower prevalence of caries, a lower caries increment, a lower decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index and a lower decayed, missing and filled surfaces (DMFS) index compared with the control group (respectively: 58.9% vs 65.5%, 34.8% vs 42.1%, 1.38 vs 1.59 and 2.06 vs 2.38). All the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In this study population, twice-yearly application of 5% sodium fluoride varnish and oral health education were more effective for preventing caries in first permanent molars than oral health education alone. The implementation of fluoride varnish application as a public health measure in schools in rural areas is recommended.

Introduction A greater prevalence of dental fluorosis has been reported in higher- versus lower-altitude communities. This study, for the first time, examined several aspects of fluoride metabolism in children, aged 4–5 years, and their parent, living at lower altitude ( 78 m) and higher altitude ( > 1487) areas in Nepal. Methods The study assessed total daily fluoride intake (TDFI), 24 h urinary fluoride excretion (UFE), and fluoride concentrations of toe- and finger-nail (FCtoenail, FCfingernail) in children and parents as well as fluoride concentration of plasma (FCplasma) in parents. Fractional urinary fluoride excretion (FUFE) was calculated as the ratio between UFE and TDFI. FCtoenail, FCfingernail and FCplasma were normalised for TDFI by dividing the variables by TDFI and the ratio was reported as the percentage. Results In total, 89 children and 80 parents took part in the study: 42 children and 41 parents from the lower altitude area; 47 children and 39 parents from the higher altitude area. Fluoride concentration of drinking water was significantly (P There was a statistically significant (p = 0.044) difference in the mean FUFE of children living at lower altitude (53%) and higher altitude (46%). However, no significant difference in FUFE was found between parents living at lower altitude (47%) compared with higher altitude (41%). In both children and parents, no statistically significant differences in normalised FCtoenail, FCfingernail were found between the two altitude areas. However, normalised FCplasma was statistically significantly (P = 0.005) higher in parents living at higher altitude (0.15%) compared with those living at lower altitude (0.11%). Conclusion The results suggest that higher altitude living results in decreased urinary fluoride excretion, and consequently increased fluoride retention in children for a given dose (amount) of fluoride.

A weak-base adsorption fiber, acrylic amine fiber (AAF), was prepared for removal and recovery of phosphate from water. The adsorption properties of the AAF for phosphate and effects of co-existing ions were investigated using batch and column filtration experiments, scanning electron microscope, and Fourier transform infrared techniques. Experimental results showed that AAF had a high phosphate adsorption capacity of 119 mg/g at pH 7.0. The effects of calcium, sulfate, carbonate, nitrate, and fluoride showed that sulfate and calcium inhibited phosphate adsorption. However, AAF showed higher binding affinity toward phosphate than sulfate. Column filtration results showed that AAF could filter 1420 bed volumes of tap water containing 1.0 mg-P/L of phosphate. The saturated AAF could be regenerated using 0.5 mol/L hydrochloric acid solution and reused. After desorption, phosphate was recovered through precipitation of hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH). The easy of regeneration, good adsorption performance, and the fiber morphology of AAF make it an attractive alternative for phosphate recovery from multiple water sources.

The high concentration of fluoride and phosphate in phosphogypsum leachate is harmful to the environment and ecosystem. Thus, there is a need to develop feasible materials or technologies to remove both fluoride and phosphate in acidic phosphogypsum leachate. In this study, sulfoaluminate cement (SC) was used to simultaneously remove fluoride and phosphate in wastewater based on its moderate alkalinity and rich content of metal elements (Ca, Al and Fe, etc). The acidized sulfoaluminate cement (ASC) composite was prepared through modifying SC with hydrochloric acid, which can increase the specific surface areas of the raw SC, as well as the activity of the metal elements in SC. Compared with other coagulants, ASC showed excellent removal performance for fluoride and phosphate, such as higher removal efficiency, better effluent quality, and accelerated settling rate. The fluoride and phosphate removal performances of ASC herein were investigated at different dosages, pH values, coexisting substances, and initial concentrations. As a result, ASC exhibited wide pH adaptability and satisfactory selectivity for fluoride and phosphate. Although drinking water is the main source of fluoride intake, recent studies reported that fluoride intake from foods could also be high, depending on cooking methods. In this study, we quantified the fluoride accumulation in foods soaked or boiled in fluoride-containing water and assessed the fluoride intake in different age groups from food and drinking water. We observed that, in the case of rice soaked in fluoride-containing water, more fluoride was accumulated in the rice than previously estimated. Fluoride interferes with the iodine staining process of rice, indicating fluoride adsorption. Fluoride accumulation in rice and vegetables increased when the soaking temperature was raised to 100 °C due to the gelatinization of rice grains and softening of vegetables. Ingesting foods boiled in fluoride-containing water increased the fluoride intake per body weight of infants more significantly than that in children and adults due to their low body weight. These results indicate that soaking and boiling foods in fluoride-containing water significantly increases fluoride intake compared to previous estimations. Therefore, it is necessary to re-evaluate the fluoride intake from food and drinking water considering the methods used for cooking food in each country and region.

A novel electrochemical method for detecting fluoride was developed based on gold electrode modified by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of poly(3-aminophenylboronic acid)-reduced graphene oxide (PAPBA-RGO) multilayers. The PAPBA-RGO multilayer-modified gold electrode was constructed by using alternating LBL assembly of RGO and PAPBA on a bare gold electrode by one-step electrodeposition. Fluoride was electrochemically determined based on the proposed modified electrode by evaluating the changes in peak current for potassium ferricyanide reduction caused by the conjunction of fluoride and boronic acid groups of PAPBA. Fluoride in the hydrosphere exceeds the standard, which could be critically hazardous to human health and the natural environment. The adsorption method is a mature and effective way to remove pollutants in water, including fluoride. In this study, we synthesized three kinds of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) with different structures and properties by modulating the organic ligands (i.e., trimesic acid (BTC), 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA), and terephthalic acid (BDC)) via the solvothermal method. The adsorption kinetics of Ce-MOFs on fluoride well fit the pseudo second order model, and their adsorption isotherms also conform to Langmuir isothermal model. The thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The effect of gels containing a statherin-derived peptide (Stn) on the protection against enamel and dentin erosive tooth wear (ETW) in vitro was evaluated. Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were divided into 2 groups (n = 15 and 18/group for enamel and dentin, respectively) that were treated with Chitosan or Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gels containing Stn15pSpS at 1.88 × 10-5 M or 3.76 × 10-5 M. Chitosan or CMC gels without active ingredients served as negative controls, while chitosan gel containing 1.23% F (as NaF) and acidulated phosphate fluoride gel (1.23% F) served as positive controls. The gels were applied on the specimens for 4 min. Stimulated saliva was collected from 3 donors and used to form a 2-h acquired pellicle on the specimens. Then, the specimens were submitted to an erosive pH cycling protocol 4 times/day for 7 days (0.01 M HCl pH 2.0/45 s, artificial saliva/2 h, and artificial saliva overnight). The gels were applied again during pH cycling, 2 times/day for 4 min after the first and last erosive challenges. Enamel and dentin loss (μm) were assessed by contact profilometry. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was analyzed using a cold field emission. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (for chitosan and CMC gels, separately) and Tukey's multiple comparison test. SEM images showed changes to enamel topography after application oft the gels containing Stn or F. Regarding CMC-based gels, for enamel, none of the treatments significantly reduced ETW in comparison with placebo; for dentin, however, gels containing Stn, regardless the concentration, significantly reduced the ETW. Moreover, Chitosan-based gels, regardless the Stn concentration, were able to protect enamel and dentin against ETW. Gels containing Stn might be a new approach to protect against ETW.

Fluorine is a necessary element for human, which is closely related to life activities, such as metabolism of teeth and bone tissue. A small amount of fluoride ions can promote the strengthen of our body. However, a large amount of fluoride ions will damage the human immune system to produce organ diseases. Sensitive and rapid detection of fluoride ions has attracted great interests for researchers. In this work, a reactive fluorescent probe SCP for detection of fluoride ions with high quantum yield was designed and synthesized based on the carbazole ring. Subsequently, the photophysical properties of the probe SCP were carefully studied. At last, SCP performed 62.8% quantum yield in physiological condition, excellent ability of quantitative analysis, well selectivity, and distinguishing features for HepG2 cell imaging.

The manuscript presents an elaborate report on the ameliorative effects of exogenous melatonin in soil-grown seedlings of the rice variety, IR-64 subjected to prolonged fluoride stress. Exogenous melatonin stimulated the physiological growth of the stressed seedlings by triggering high accumulation of gibberellic acid (GA) and melatonin via up regulation of the biosynthetic genes like GA3ox, TDC, SNAT and ASMT. The endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) content increased via induction of NCED3 and suppression of ABA8ox1. However, the ABA-dependent genes like TRAB1, WRKY71 and OSBZ8 were down regulated in presence of high endogenous GA and melatonin. High melatonin level led to low indole-3-acetic acid accumulation in the treated seedlings during fluoride stress. Melatonin significantly decreased fluoride bioaccumulation by suppressing its uptake via CLC1 and CLC2, and also restored P-H+/ATPase expression. The damage indices like chlorosis (accompanied by low RuBisCo), malondialdehyde, electrolyte leakage, methylglyoxal (detoxified by glyoxalase II) and protein carbonylation were greatly reduced. Increased proline synthesis, activation of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle and enhanced activity of glutathione peroxidase, catalase and guaiacol peroxidase led to low ROS accumulation and localization in the melatonin-treated plants exposed to stress. Overall, melatonin treatment alleviated fluoride-mediated injuries by restricting fluoride uptake, refining the defence machinery and altering the phytohormone homeostasis.

Objective To compare ion release characteristics of three different dental varnishes either containing CPP-ACP and fluoride (CPP-ACPF, MI Varnish GC, Japan), bioactive glass and fluoride (BGAF, Dentsply Sirona USA) or fluoride alone (NUPRO White, Dentsply Sirona USA) using fluoride-Ion Selective Electrode (F-ISE), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), 19F and 31P Magic Angle Spinning-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS-NMR). Methods A thin layer (0.0674 ± 0.0005 g) of each varnish (20 × 25 mm in area) was spread on a roughened glass slide (n = 7). They were separately immersed in 10 ml Tris buffer (0.06 M, pH = 7.30), and changed after 1, 2, 4, 6, 24 and 48 h. Fluoride-ion concentration at each time using the F-ISE, whilst calcium and phosphate release were investigated using ICP-OES. XRD, FTIR. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology is difficult to be used for phosphogypsum (PG) treatment because the pH of PG is too low to be suitable for the growth of some bacteria. When acidophilus bacteria are used to treat PG, their low mineralization rate leads to low removal of the impurities. Based on the above problems, this study reports a new method that uses enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) modified acidophilus bacteria solution to remove phosphorus (P) and fluorine (F) in PG. Five kinds of mixtures of MICP and EICP (ME) were used to leach the PG column, and its mechanism was discussed. The results show that when the ratio of MICP to EICP is 2:1, the removal ratio of P and F is the highest, which reaches 72.87-74.92%. Compared with the single traditional bacillus solution or single acidophilic bacteria solution, the impurity removal ratio of the ME21 (MICP:EICP=2:1) mixture is increased by about 13%. The good acid resistance of the urease enzyme and acidophilic bacteria improves their growth and activity, thus increasing the biomineralization rate by about 22%. Additionally, the ME treatment is 30% cheaper than the traditional binder treatment. Therefore, this new treatment is a low-cost and environmentally friendly method.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a massively generated hazardous by-product in the phosphorus industry. Large-scale, efficient, profitable on-site recycling is an emerging topic for promoting sustainable phosphorus circularity and mitigating potential human exposure. In this work, we integrated a green and low-cost additive polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) into the binder design of PG immobilization. The overall experimental results illustrate that the incorporation of PAC can efficiently promote the cement hydration reaction, with amorphous phases increased from 25.9 wt% (control group) to 27.5 wt% (with 2 g/L PAC). The macro-investigations indicate that the PAC optimized the porosity and mechanical properties of specimens, facilitating a mechanically stable solidified matrix for extrapolating its field engineering application. The detailed micrographs and elemental mapping demonstrate that apart from co-existing with the hydration products, the PAC agent plays a role in the immobilization of fluoride. Herein, the combined optimization enhanced the fluoride retention capacity due to the precipitated additional hydration products, comparable encapsulation, and high adsorption ability of PAC agents. Therefore our design of PAC-augmented binders can open up a new field of PG on-site solidification/stabilization application that ensures efficient fluoride retention in a technically feasible and financially profitable methodology.

Forty-two healthy adult male rats (Wistar albino, n = 42, 8 weeks old, starting weights 200-250 g) employed in this study were subdivided into six groups randomly with seven rats per group as follows: (i) Control group: received standard diet; (ii) RJ group: received standard diet supplemented with royal jelly; (iii) F50 group: received standard diet supplemented with fluoride (50 mg/kg BW); (iv) F100 group: received standard diet supplemented with fluoride (100 mg/kg BW); (v) F50 +RJ group: received standard diet supplemented with fluoride (50 mg/kg BW) and royal jelly; (iv) F100 +RJ group: received standard diet supplemented with fluoride (100 mg/kg BW) and royal jelly. The study continued for a total of eight weeks. Western blot analysis was conducted to determine the post-translational expression levels of NF-κB, Bax, Bcl-2, TNF-α, Caspase-3 and Caspase-6 proteins in pancreas tissue. The pancreatic tissue was subjected to histopathological evaluation. Furthermore, MDA, GSH and CAT activities were examined by spectrophotometric analyzes. Our findings demonstrate that, compared to the control and RJ groups, Bcl-2 protein expression was augmented and, conversely, Caspase-6, Caspase-3 and Bax protein levels were decreased upon fluoride treatment. A statistically significant increase in TNF-α and NF-κB protein expressions was observed in the groups with fluoride-induced damage compared to the control and RJ groups. The MDA levels were increased in all fluoride-treated rats compared to those in the control and RJ groups, whereas the CAT and GSH activities were reduced in all rats with fluoride- induced damage. Although there was not a great difference between the groups regarding histopathological findings, there was a tendency to decrease in the rate of damage upon royal jelly treatment.

Fluoride (F) and lead (Pb) are widespread pollutants in the environment. F and Pb affect the thyroid endocrine system, but the mechanism of action between F and Pb is still unclear. In this study, in order to evaluate the effects of F or/and Pb on histopathological changes, antioxidant indices, the levels of thyroid hormones (THs), and the expression of endocrine-related genes in zebrafish thyroid. One thousand and two hundred zebrafish (female:male = 1:1) were randomly divided into four groups: control group (C group), 80 mg/L F group (F group), 60 mg/L Pb group (Pb group), and 80 mg/L F + 60 mg/L Pb group (F + Pb group) for 45 d and 90 d. Histopathological sections showed a loss of glia and follicular epithelial hyperplasia in the thyroid gland after exposure to F and Pb. Oxidative stress in the thyroid was induced after F and Pb exposure. And each oxidation index was increased after F + Pb exposure. Combined F and Pb exposure aggravated the downregulation of thyroid hormones T3 and T4 compared to exposure alone. Furthermore, F and Pb exposure altered the expression of thyroid endocrine-related genes in a time-dependent manner. These results indicate that F and Pb can affect the endocrine system of thyroid by changing the tissue structure, antioxidant capacity, thyroid hormone secretion and the levels of endocrine-related genes in thyroid. F and Pb can also produce toxic effects on thyroid, but the degree of poisoning is different in different indicators, mainly for the additive effect between them. Additionally, males are more sensitive than females to F or Pb toxicity. However, the specific molecular mechanism of the effects of F and Pb on thyroid endocrine system needs to be further studied.

Slash and burn is a land use practice widespread all over the world, and nowadays it is formally recognized as the principal livelihood system in rural areas of South America, Asia, and Africa. The practice consists of a land rotation where users cut native or secondary forest to establish a new crop field and, in some cases, build charcoal kilns with the cut wood to produce charcoal. Due to several socio-economic changes in developing countries, some scientists and international organizations have questioned the sustainability of slash and burn since in some cases, crop yield does not justify the soil degradation caused. To estimate the soil quality in agricultural and forest soils at different ages of the forest-fallow period (25, 35, and 50 years), this survey investigated rural areas in three locations in Manica province, central Mozambique: Vanduzi, Sussundenga, and Macate. Soil profiles were trenched and sampled with a pedological approach under crop fields and forest-fallow. The chronosequence was selected to test the hypothesis that the increase in forest-fallow age causes an improvement of soil fertility. Results highlighted discrete variations among locations in mineralogy, Al- and Fe-oxyhydroxides, sand, silt, pH, total organic carbon, humic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorous, chloride, nitrate, fluoride, and ammonium. Few differences in mineralogy, Fe-oxyhydroxides, available P, chloride, and nitrate were detected between crop fields and forest-fallow within the same location. Such differences were mostly ascribed to intrinsic fertility inherited from the parent material rather than a longer forest-fallow period. However, physicochemical soil property improvement did not occur under a forest age of 50 years (the longest forest-fallow considered), indicating that harmonization of intrinsic fertility and agronomic practices may increase soil organic matter and nutrient contents more than a long forest-fallow period.
