Given its importance in current society, understanding the individual differences that might encourage creative productivity should be an important focus for research. In this two-study paper, we suggest that an individual’s beliefs about the malleability of abilities and traits plays an important role in their creative performance. This relationship was examined in both children (Study 1) and adults (Study 2). For Study 1, data was collected from 58 pupils (aged 4–7 years). Participants completed a divergent thinking task, and their implicit theories of intelligence were measured. Results showed that holding an entity theory of intelligence was associated with lower scores on the divergent thinking task. For Study 2, 131 adults participated, completing an online divergent thinking task as well as reporting their implicit theories of creativity. Leading on from the findings of Study 1, endorsing an entity theory of creativity was associated with lower scores on the divergent thinking task. In both studies, the role of age and gender was examined. Results are discussed in relation to a potential avenue for interventions designed to encourage creativity.

The Mini-TES spectrometer carried by Spirit and Opportunity is a unique instrument that enabled vertical temperature profiles to be retrieved at high frequency (every 2 s, or “ICK”). Observations obtained from this instrument provide information on boundary layer activity. As an extension of previous work, we have retrieved ICK-by-ICK vertical temperature profiles to characterize turbulent behavior at each rover site for up to two Mars Years. We have also retrieved ICK-by-ICK near-surface (1.1 m) atmospheric temperatures and surface temperatures from dedicated atmospheric observations as well as geologic observations that extend the coverage of near-surface observations. The extension and increased frequency of retrievals as well as the additional observations provide a more complete view of the vertical and temporal variation of temperature fluctuations within the PBL. Temperature fluctuations are assessed using detrended temperature time-series data. The results show fluctuations can be as large as 10 K at the surface and 8 K aloft with timescales on the order of minutes. We have calculated the peak-to-peak amplitudes of temperature fluctuations and the corresponding timescales over which they occur. Spirit and Opportunity temperature fluctuation amplitudes decrease in magnitude vertically, where higher atmospheric levels show smaller fluctuations in amplitudes than at the surface. The magnitude of temperature fluctuations changes with the difference in surface and air temperature. This difference varies little as a function of season at both rover sites. Fluctuations are observed to quickly decrease in the late afternoon reaching a minimum near 17:00 LTST followed by moderately increased activity near sunset caused by forced convection. There is no significant change in the observed convective activity as a function of dust optical depth during regional dust storms. The few large temperature fluctuations that are concurrent with dust events are likely the result of large-scale systems.

Glabrous canary seed (Phalaris canariensis L.) is a novel true cereal grain produced primarily in Western Canada which has been approved for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada in 2016. Due to its high protein content (22%), this new edible grain is emerging as an alternative source of plant proteins. In the present work, protein extractability from four novel glabrous (2 yellow and 2 brown) canary seeds varieties was improved based on the selection of optimal pH of protein solubilisation and precipitation. Solubilisation at pH 12 followed by acid precipitation at pH 5 were retained as optimal conditions. Scale up of the protein optimized wet fractionation process resulted in highly purified canary seed protein isolates (purity of 91 to 93%) with protein recovery yield of 65 to 69%. In parallel, for the others canary seed components, a good recovery yields were obtained for the oil fraction (6.1–6.7 g/100 g flour), starch fraction (48.1–54 g/100 g flour), and crude fiber fraction (15.1–19.7 g/100 g flour). The study of the functional properties of the obtained canary protein isolates revealed, higher solubility at acidic than alkaline region; enhanced fat and water holding capacities and notably higher foaming and emulsifying capacities than control soy protein isolate. With growing global demand for protein, glabrous canary seed has high potential in the food industry, particularly as a good source of functional gluten free cereal proteins.
