Abstract

The c. 130-90 Ma High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) greatly influenced the geological evolution of Canada’s Arctic Islands along with formerly adjacent Svalbard (Norway), Franz Josef Land (Russia) and offshore regions such as the Alpha-Mendeleev Ridge. Three subalkaline tholeiitic pulses constitute the HALIP: (1) an initial two pulses at ca. 120–130 Ma in the Canadian portion are temporally associated with the Isachsen Formation basalts, and a later pulse at ca. 95–100 Ma fed extensive flood basalt lavas of the Strand Fiord Formation. Fieldwork at South Fiord on Axel Heiberg Island revealed a small network of sills and dykes. The U-Pb ID-TIMS baddeleyite age for diabase from a >10 m SSE-trending dyke (sample 13-CK-16) is 95.18 ± 0.35 Ma (2σ) and for a gabbro from a >50 m thick sill ∼7 km to the dyke’s SW (sample 13-WJA-C028-A2) is 95.41 ± 0.12 Ma (2σ), identical within stated uncertainties. The two ages, in tandem with the similar geochemistry of the intrusions and Strand Fiord Formation lavas, provide the first precise age constraints for the feeder system of the Strand Fiord Formation which represents the younger pulse of HALIP. The two samples are distinct from each other in their Sm-Nd isotopic values suggesting they were derived from separate batches of magma that fed separate eruptive episodes.

Abstract

Western South Africa between Cape Town and the Namibian border hosts many dyke swarms that strike broadly to the NW and NNW, towards the reconstructed plume-centre of the c. 130 Ma Parana-Etendeka Large Igneous Province (LIP) but are undated. U-Pb ID-TIMS age determinations on baddeleyite from two NNW-striking dykes (~100 km long) parallel to the Namaqualand coast yield 487 ± 8 Ma and 482 ± 7 Ma as age determinations. These results demonstrate that these two dykes represent a magmatic event independent of, and significantly older than the Parana-Etendeka LIP with which they had previously been correlated. Major and trace element compositions are uniform along-these two dykes but distinct from each other; each is inferred to be fed by different magma batches. The inland Garies dyke has the stronger asthenospheric signature, comparable to E-MORBs, while the Namaqualand dyke has a lithospheric overprint, which could have been derived from a metasomatised sub-continental lithospheric mantle and/or assimilation of upper continental crust. The magmatism coincides with a tectonic shift from the compressional Pan-African Saldania-Gariep orogeny to a pull-apart rift system hosting Klipheuwel-Piekenierskloof deposits. This magmatism could potentially be the remnant of a hitherto unrecognized LIP. Within uncertainty, the 485 Ma timing overlaps with the end of the Cambrian period.

Abstract

Introduction Advances in culture-independent molecular biotechnologies have driven a greater appreciation for the function of mutualistic microorganisms in the maintenance of states of health in humans. The purpose of this study was to test the long-held hypothesis that healthy pulp lack bacteria. Methods Strict inclusion criteria were used to identify 10 pristine teeth from 10 healthy patients that were scheduled to be electively extracted in compliance with an orthodontic treatment plan. Using a rigorous disinfection protocol to isolate the operating field, the pulp space was accessed, and pulp tissue was collected in vivo from each tooth using a barbed broach. Genomic DNA was extracted from each pulp sample and analyzed for the presence of bacterial DNA using universal 16S ribosomal RNA polymerase chain reaction primers and MiSeq sequencing (Illumina, San Diego, CA) of community amplicons. Results One hundred percent (10/10) of the tested pulp tissues demonstrated the presence of bacterial DNA, with a mean of 343 operational taxonomic units per sample (range, 191–479). These were derived from 12 genera in which Ralstonia, Actinetobacter, and Staphylococcus were predominant (43%–78% of total community). None of the negative-field controls and none of the instruments used in the study tested positive for the presence of contaminating DNA. Conclusions This study presents evidence to support the conclusion that the pulp spaces of pristine healthy teeth contain detectable bacterial DNA.

Abstract

One of the primary advantages of the internet is its ability to enable flexible, 24-h access to up-to-date information, irrespective of the geographic location of the user. It is thus rapidly becoming an important tool for the dissemination of information on a global scale. In order to take advantage of the increased accessibility available through the internet, the Murdoch University Energy Research Institute has developed an internet-based version of its physical renewable energy remote area power supply (RAPS) demonstration system. In this way, the physical site, which aims to inform the community about the cost, performance and reliability of renewable energy systems by enabling them to visit a practical operating RAPS system, is available to a much larger audience. The internet-based site, WebRAPS, contains a number of features including case studies of the three RAPS systems at the physical site, specifications of the components used in the systems and general information about the renewable energy system technologies. It also displays historical and real-time data from a monitoring system integrated with the largest of the physical RAPS systems. Visitors to the internet site are able to see how the RAPS system is operating, almost as well as if they were present at the physical site itself. This paper demonstrates the features of the WebRAPS site and discusses how it was developed. Murdoch University Energy Research Institute, Australia, developed an Internet-based version of its physical renewable energy remote area power supply (RAPS) demonstration system. Information on the cost, performance, and reliability of such systems is available to a much larger audience as users and community stakeholders can visit a practical operating RAPS system. Abstract

Two “suicide” inhibitors of GABA-aminotransferase which are known to raise the concentration of GABA in vivo and to have anti-convulsant properties, have been compared for the extent to which they produce micro-vacuoles in the brains of rats. The compounds γ-vinyl-GABA (Vigabatrin) and ethanolamine-O-sulphate were administered orally for six months to rats at doses that produced the same increase in brain GABA levels. Micro-vacuolation was found to be present in the brains of animals treated with either compound but to be more severe in those treated with Vigabatrin. A quantitative assessment using computerised image analysis revealed that both the number of vacuoles, and the area occupied by them, was twice as high in the Vigabatrin treated animals as in those treated with ethanolamine-O-sulphate. This quantitative difference could be seen to be due to the fact that in the Vigabatrin treated animals the vacuoles extended into the white matter tracts between the cerebellar folia whereas in those animals treated with ethanolamine-O-sulphate it was confined to the roof nucleus.
