4. Mineralization of aqueous phenolate solutions: A combination of irradiation treatment and wet oxidation

Wet oxidation (high-temperature, high-pressure oxidation of organic wastes in aqueous solution) and radiation technology were combined in γ-ray and electron beam induced oxidation of 4×10−4–1×10−2 mol dm−3 Na-phenolate solutions in a wide O2 concentration (1–20 bar pressure) and absorbed dose (0–50 kGy) range. Most experiments were made in stainless steel high pressure autoclave equipped with magnetic stirrer. The rate of oxidation was followed by chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon content measurements. The rate was similar in γ-ray and pulsed electron beam irradiation and increased with O2 concentration in the liquid.

5. A distributed energy-efficient clustering protocol for wireless sensor networks

Minimizing energy dissipation and maximizing network lifetime are among the central concerns when designing applications and protocols for sensor networks. Clustering has been proven to be energy-efficient in sensor networks since data routing and relaying are only operated by cluster heads. Besides, cluster heads can process, filter and aggregate data sent by cluster members, thus reducing network load and alleviating the bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed clustering algorithm where cluster heads are elected following a three-way message exchange between each sensor and its neighbors. Sensor's eligibility to be elected cluster head is based on its residual energy and its degree. Our protocol has a message exchange complexity of O(1) and a worst-case convergence time complexity of O(N). Simulations show that our algorithm outperforms EESH, one of the most recently published distributed clustering algorithms, in terms of network lifetime and ratio of elected cluster heads.

6. Methylcyclopentane transformation on Ge–Rh bimetallic catalysts prepared by organometallic grafting

Ge–Rh/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by organometallic grafting, with nominal Ge loadings of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 monolayer and actual loading of 300, 600, 2000 and 2100 ppm. The dispersion decreased proportionally to the Ge loading up to 600 ppm Ge. Methylcyclopentane was used as catalytic test reaction. The selectivity of ring opening was 70–90%. Addition of 300 and 600 ppm Ge divided the contiguous Rh sites to smaller ensembles. Here mostly 2-methylpentane gave C1–C5 fragments, its surface intermediate undergoing fragmentation without desorption, like on Rh with D < 60–70%. More Ge (2000 ppm) divided further Rh and also may have penetrated into subsurface layers. Here all primary ring opening products gave fragments, similarly to small Rh particles.

The hydrogenation of 1-pentyne over various palladium catalysts was studied under various conditions. In the regime of selective hydrogenation, as observed by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, significant amounts of subsurface carbon and a Pd-C surface phase built up in the early stage of the reaction. These species inhibited the emergence of bulk-dissolved hydrogen to the surface, which is reactive but unselective. Carbon laydown was also observed by tapered element oscillating microbalance and by catalytic pulse experiments, with greater laydown occurring in the selective regime. The effect of carbon dissolution in the crystal lattice near the surface was evidenced by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In alkyne hydrogenation, the active phase of palladium catalysts is a Pd-C surface phase in the regime of selective hydrogenation. Because self-hydrogenation (hydrogen from dissociated pentyne) was also shown to be unselective, only surface hydrogen from the gas phase is available to generate the alkene. The issue of structure-sensitivity of alkyne hydrogenation over palladium catalysts is discussed in terms of structure-sensitive carbon deposition and carbon dissolution into the metal lattice.

8. Advanced treatment of textile wastewater towards reuse using a membrane bioreactor

The aim of this work was to quantify the performance of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for the treatment of textile wastewater, and to investigate its capability to achieve a water quality meeting reuse criteria. A laboratory-scale MBR unit was fed with textile wastewater originating from a polyester finishing mill. Removal capacity was examined at VLRs ranging between 0.35 and 3.6 g/(l day). In addition, the effect of nutrient addition was studied. COD removal was found to vary between 60 and 95% with reduced COD levels at lower VLRs tested. Nutrient addition slightly enhanced effluent quality. Sludge yield obtained were between 0.01 and 0.1 gMLSS/gCODremoved. At similar sludge loading rates specific sludge production rates were approximately 50% higher when nutrients were added. A distinct relationship between sludge growth and colour removal could be observed. Above an sludge growth rate of 0.3 g/(l day), colour removal was above 87% for all wavelengths examined. If reuse of MBR treated wastewater is intended, additional polishing steps must be considered as MBR effluents did not reach the required quality for water reuse. In order to upgrade MBR effluent, nanofiltration as a post-treatment was suggested.
