The absolute muon flux between 20 and 3000 GeV is measured with the L3 magnetic muon spectrometer for zenith angles ranging from 0°to 58°. Due to the large exposure of about 150 m2sr d, and the excellent momentum resolution of the L3 muon chambers, a precision of 2.3% at 150 GeV in the vertical direction is achieved.The ratio of positive to negative muons is studied between 20 and 500 GeV, and the average vertical muon charge ratio is found to be 1.285±0.003(stat.)±0.019(syst.)., Physics Letters B, 598 (1-2), ISSN:0370-2693, ISSN:0031-9163, ISSN:1873-2445

Vacuum Insulation Panels(VIPs) have been regarded as a super thermal insulation material with a thermal resistance of about 5-8 times higher than that of equally thick conventional polyurethane boards. In this paper, the researches on factors influencing interior pressure in VIPs, including gas and water vapor permeation through the barrier and outgassing of the core materials, were reviewed respectively. Following this, aiming at the outgassing from open cell PU foam, the specific outgassing rate of the core material is tested not only at room temperature but also at low and high temperatures by an orifice known-conductance method.

The process e + e − → Z γγ→ q q γγ is studied in 0.5 fb−1 of data collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 130.1 GeV and 201.7 GeV. Cross sections are measured and found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations. The study of the least energetic photon constrains the quartic gauge boson couplings to −0.008 GeV−2

We report on measurements of the inclusive production rate of Σ+ and Σ0 baryons in hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector at LEP. The Σ+ baryons are detected through the decay Σ+→pπ0, while the Σ0 baryons are detected via the decay mode Σ0→Λγ. The average numbers of Σ+ and Σ0 per hadronic Z decay are measured to be: NΣ++NΣ̄+=0.114±0.011stat±0.009syst NΣ0+NΣ̄0=0.095±0.015stat±0.013syst. These rates are found to be higher than the predictions from Monte Carlo hadronization models and analytical parameterizations of strange baryon production., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

We report the result of a search for scalar leptons in $\rm e^+e^-$, collisions at 189 GeV centre-of-mass energy at LEP. No evidence for such particles is found in a data sample of 176 pb$^{-1}$. Improved upper limits are set on the production cross sections for these new particles. New exclusion contours in the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are derived, as well as new lower limits on the masses of these supersymmetric particles. Under the assumptions of common gaugino and scalar masses at the GUT scale, we set an absolute lower limit on the mass of the lightest scalar electron of 65.5 GeV.

Searches for scalar top and scalar bottom quarks, as well as for mass-degenerate scalar quarks of the first two families are performed at 189 GeV centre-of-mass energy with the L3 detector at LEP. No signals are observed. Model-independent limits on the scalar top production cross sections are determined for the decay modes $\rm \tilde{t}_1 \rightarrow c \tilde{\chi}_1^0$ and $\rm \tilde{t}_1 \rightarrow b \ell \tilde{\nu}$. For scalar quarks of the other flavours $\tilde{\mathrm{q}} \to \mathrm{q} \tilde{\chi}_1^0$ decays are considered. Within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model mass limits are set at 95\% C.L. for these particles. Indirect limits on the gluino mass are also derived.

We present a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at LEP at the center of mass energies of 161 and 172 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 21.25 pb-1 collected during the high energy runs of 1996. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are well reproduced by QCD models. From a comparison of the data with resummed second order QCD calculations, we determine the strong coupling constant at the two energies. Combining with our earlier measurements we find that the strong coupling constant decreases with increasing energy as expected in QCD.

A search for excited leptons $\rm e^*,~\mu^*, ~\tau^*$ and $\nu_{\rm e}^*$ in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s}$ = 161 GeV is performed using the $\rm 10.8 ~pb^{-1}$ of data collected by the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence has been found for their existence. From an analysis of the expected $\ell^*\ell^*$ pair production in the channels $\rm ee\gamma\gamma$, $\rm \mu\mu\gamma\gamma$, $\rm \tau\tau\gamma\gamma$, $\rm eeWW$, and $\rm \nu\nu\gamma\gamma$, the lower mass limits at 95\% C.L. are 79.7 GeV for $\rm e^{*}$, 79.9 GeV for $\mu^{*}$, 79.3 GeV for $\tau^{*}$ and 71.3 GeV for $\nu_{\rm e}^{*}$ assuming the same couplings as for standard leptons. From an analysis of the expected $\ell\ell^*$ single production in channels $\rm ee\gamma$, $\mu\mu\gamma$, $ \tau\tau\gamma$, $\rm \nu_{e}eW$ and $\nu\nu\gamma$, the upper limits on the couplings $\lambda/m_{\ell^*}$ up to $m_{\ell^{*}}$ = 161 GeV are determined.

A search for unstable sequential neutral and charged heavy leptons has been made at center-of-mass energies 130 and 136 GeV with the L3 detector at LEP. The neutral leptons are assumed to decay via mixing to electrons and muons. No evidence for their existence was found. We exclude unstable Dirac neutrinos for masses below 59.3 (57.9) GeV and unstable Majorana neutrinos below 48.6 (47.2) GeV if the neutrino couples to the electron(muon) family. We exclude unstable charged heavy leptons for masses below 61 GeV for a wide range of the associated neutral lepton mass.

A search for supersymmetric particles (charginos, neutralinos, sleptons and stop quarks) has been performed with data collected by the L3 detector during the November 1995 run of the LEP collider at centre of mass energies between 130 and 140 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 5.1 pb−1. We observe no signal for supersymmetric particles and we set improved exclusion limits on their production cross sections and masses.

Using the data recorded with the L3 detector at LEP, we study the process e + e − → μ + μ − ( γ ) for events with hard initial-state photon radiation. The effective centre-of-mass energies of the muons range from 50 GeV to 86 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 103.5 pb −1 and yields 293 muon-pair events with a hard photon along the beam direction. The events are used to determine the cross sections and the forward-backward charge asymmetries at centre-of-mass energies below the Z resonance.

We report on a search for the excited leptons e ∗ , μ ∗ , τ ∗ and ν ∗ in e + e − collisions at s = 130-140 GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence has been found for their existence. From an analysis of the expected pair produced l ∗ l ∗ in the channels eeγγ, μμγγ, ττγγ, eeWW, and ννγγ, we determine the lower mass limits at 95% C.L. of 64.7 GeV for e ∗ , 64.9 GeV for μ ∗ , 64.2 GeV for τ ∗ , 57.3 GeV (eW decay mode) and 61.4 GeV (νγ decay mode) for ν ∗ . From an analysis of the expected singly produced ll ∗ in the channels eeγ, μμγ, ττγ, νeW and ννγ, we determine upper limits on the couplings λ m l ∗ up to m l ∗ = 130 GeV .

We have searched for anomalous Z → γγγ events with the L3 detector at LEP. No significant deviations from the expected QED e+e− → γγγ events are observed. The branching ratio upper limit for a compoite Z decaying directly into three photons is found to be 1.0 × 10−5 at 95% C.L. The branching ratio upper limits for the process Z → γX, X → γγ are in the range of 0.4 to 1.3 × 10−5, depending on the mass and width of the scalar particle X. In the context of a model with magnetic monopoles coupling to the Z, we find BR(Z → γγγ) < 0.8 × 10−5 at 95% C.L.; this results in a lower mass limit of 510 GeV for a magnetic monopole., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

A finite element computation procedure for determining the initial shape of cable-stayed bridges under the action of the dead load of girders and pretension in inclined cables is presented. The system equation of cable-stayed bridges including the nonlinearities due to large displacement, beam-column, and cable sag effects is first set up and then solved using the Newton-Raphson method in an increment-iterationwise approach. Based on a reference configuration and an assumed cable pretension force, the equilibrium configuration under dead load is found. Further, by adjusting cable forces, a ‘shape iteration’ is carried out and a new equilibrium configuration, i.e., a more reasonable initial shape, can be determined. The shape iteration is repeated until the desired tolerance is achieved. Numerical results show that a more accurate initial shape having reasonable prestress distribution and less deflection of girders can easily be determined by the proposed procedure.

We have observed B0-B0 mixing in Z0→bb decays using hadronic events containing dileptons. The data sample corresponds to 118 200 hadron events at √s≈Mz. From a fit to the dilepton p and p⊥ spectra, we determine the mixing parameter to be χB=0.178-0.040 +0.049. © 1990.

The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

From demographic mortality and disability of, in total, 424965 y from workers in 29 coal or coloured/metal mines in Human province of China during the period 1980-1984, we calculated the length of expected working life (EWL) as well as the life expectancy (EL) of the workers in the different types of mines and between those working on the surface and those working underground. The average life expectancy in the coal mines for those starting work at 15 y was found to be 58.91 y and 49.23 y for surface and underground workers respectively. In the coloured/metal mines they were 60.24 y and 56.55 y respectively. If only the mortality data was taken into account; for the coal mines, the EWL at the age of 15 y of surface workers and underground workers was 48.46 and 45.10 y respectively; whilst in the coloured/metal mines the figures were 48.25 and 45.99 y respectively. If both mortality and morbidity data is used the EWL at the same age and in the same population is for the coal mines 39.42 (surface workers) 25.54 (underground workers) and for the coloured/metal mines 42.05 (surface workers) and 30.02 (underground workers). The main causes of the lowered EWL of the underground workers were industrial accidents and pneumoconiosis which indicates that safety measures need to be increased and working conditions improved to protect underground workers.

The process e(+)e(-) --> Zgamma, where the Z boson decays into hadrons or neutrinos, is studied with data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 189 up to 209 GeV The cross sections are measured and found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits on triple neutral-gauge-boson couplings, forbidden in the Standard Model at tree level, are derived. Limits on the energy scales at which the anomalous couplings could be manifest are set. They range from 0.3 to 2.3 TeV depending on the new physics effect under consideration. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
