Schools often track students to classes based on ability. Proponents of tracking argue it is a low-cost tool to improve learning since instruction is more effective when students are more homogeneous, while opponents argue it exacerbates initial differences in opportunities without strong evidence of efficacy. In fact, little is known about the pervasiveness or determinants of ability tracking in the US. To fill this gap, we use detailed administrative data from Texas to estimate the extent of tracking within schools for grades 4 through 8 over the years 2011-2019. We find substantial tracking; tracking within schools overwhelms any sorting by ability that takes place across schools. The most important determinant of tracking is heterogeneity in student ability, and schools operationalize tracking through the classification of students into categories such as gifted and disabled and curricular differentiation. When we examine how tracking changes in response to educational policies, we see that schools decrease tracking in response to accountability pressures. Finally, when we explore how exposure to tracking correlates with student mobility in the achievement distribution, we find positive effects on high-achieving students with no negative effects on low-achieving students, suggesting that tracking may increase inequality by raising the ceiling.

Interactions between subcortical vascular disease and dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are unclear, and clinical overlap between the diseases makes diagnosis challenging. Existing studies have shown regional microstructural changes specific to each disease, and that textures in fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI images may characterize abnormalities in tissue microstructure. This work aims to investigate regional FLAIR biomarkers that can differentiate dementia cohorts with and without subcortical vascular disease. FLAIR and diffusion MRI (dMRI) volumes were obtained in 65 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 21 AD, 44 subcortical vascular MCI (scVMCI), 22 Mixed etiology, and 48 healthy elderly patients. FLAIR texture and intensity biomarkers were extracted from the normal appearing brain matter (NABM), WML penumbra, blood supply territory (BST), and white matter tract regions of each patient. All FLAIR biomarkers were correlated to dMRI metrics in each region and global WML load, and biomarker means between groups were compared using ANOVA. Binary classifications were performed using Random Forest classifiers to investigate the predictive nature of the regional biomarkers, and SHAP feature analysis was performed to further investigate optimal regions of interest for differentiating disease groups. The regional FLAIR biomarkers were strongly correlated to MD, while all biomarker regions but white matter tracts were strongly correlated to WML burden. Classification between Mixed disease and healthy, AD, and scVMCI patients yielded accuracies of 97%, 81%, and 72% respectively using WM tract biomarkers. Classification between scVMCI and healthy, MCI, and AD patients yielded accuracies of 89%, 84%, and 79% respectively using penumbra biomarkers. Only the classification between AD and healthy patients had optimal results using NABM biomarkers. This work presents novel regional FLAIR biomarkers that may quantify white matter degeneration related to subcortical vascular disease, and which indicate that investigating degeneration in specific regions may be more important than assessing global WML burden in vascular disease groups.

- Abstract
The harmonized Canadian Dementia Imaging Protocol (CDIP) has been developed to suit the needs of a number of co-occurring Canadian studies collecting data on brain changes across adulthood and neurodegeneration. In this study, we verify the impact of CDIP parameters compliance on total brain volume variance using 86 scans of the same individual acquired on various scanners. Data included planned data collection acquired within the Consortium pour l’identification précoce de la maladie Alzheimer - Québec (CIMA-Q) and Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) studies, as well as opportunistic data collection from various protocols. For images acquired from Philips scanners, lower variance in brain volumes were observed when the stated CDIP resolution was set. For images acquired from GE scanners, lower variance in brain volumes were noticed when TE/TR values were within 5% of the CDIP protocol, compared to values farther from that criteria. Together, these results suggest that a harmonized protocol like the CDIP may help to reduce neuromorphometric measurement variability in multicentric studies.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal dementia is a highly heritable neurodegenerative disorder. In about a third of patients, the disease is caused by autosomal dominant genetic mutations usually in one of three genes: progranulin (GRN), microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), or chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9orf72). Findings from studies of other genetic dementias have shown neuroimaging and cognitive changes before symptoms onset, and we aimed to identify whether such changes could be shown in frontotemporal dementia. METHODS: We recruited participants to this multicentre study who either were known carriers of a pathogenic mutation in GRN, MAPT, or C9orf72, or were at risk of carrying a mutation because a first-degree relative was a known symptomatic carrier. We calculated time to expected onset as the difference between age at assessment and mean age at onset within the family. Participants underwent a standardised clinical assessment and neuropsychological battery. We did MRI and generated cortical and subcortical volumes using a parcellation of the volumetric T1-weighted scan. We used linear mixed-effects models to examine whether the association of neuropsychology and imaging measures with time to expected onset of symptoms differed between mutation carriers and non-carriers. FINDINGS: Between Jan 30, 2012, and Sept 15, 2013, we recruited participants from 11 research sites in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Canada. We analysed data from 220 participants: 118 mutation carriers (40 symptomatic and 78 asymptomatic) and 102 non-carriers. For neuropsychology measures, we noted the earliest significant differences between mutation carriers and non-carriers 5 years before expected onset, when differences were significant for all measures except for tests of immediate recall and verbal fluency. We noted the largest Z score differences between carriers and non-carriers 5 years before expected onset in tests of naming (Boston Naming Test -0·7; SE 0·3) and executive function (Trail Making Test Part B, Digit Span backwards, and Digit Symbol Task, all -0·5, SE 0·2). For imaging measures, we noted differences earliest for the insula (at 10 years before expected symptom onset, mean volume as a percentage of total intracranial volume was 0·80% in mutation carriers and 0·84% in non-carriers; difference -0·04, SE 0·02) followed by the temporal lobe (at 10 years before expected symptom onset, mean volume as a percentage of total intracranial volume 8·1% in mutation carriers and 8·3% in non-carriers; difference -0·2, SE 0·1). INTERPRETATION: Structural imaging and cognitive changes can be identified 5-10 years before expected onset of symptoms in asymptomatic adults at risk of genetic frontotemporal dementia. These findings could help to define biomarkers that can stage presymptomatic disease and track disease progression, which will be important for future therapeutic trials.
