Since the environmental hazards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are well known, heterogeneous catalysis has become one of the most popular methods to treat VOCs due to its environmental friendliness and simplicity of operation. Although a large number of reports have reviewed the application of catalytic oxidation for the degradation of VOCs, relatively few reports are based on this direction of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF derivatives. Herein, this paper reviews the recent applications of heterogeneous catalytic technologies in the degradation of VOCs, including photocatalysis, thermal catalysis and other catalytic approaches. The applications of MOFs and their derivatives in VOCs degradation, such as the progress of MOF-derived metal oxides in the treatment of toluene, were highlighted. The mechanisms of VOCs degradation by different catalytic approaches were systematically presented. Finally, we presented the views and directions of VOCs treatment technology development. We hope that this reaction type-oriented review will provide important insights into MOFs and MOF-derived materials for VOCs pollution control.

Binge drinking in patients with metabolic syndrome accelerates the development of alcohol-associated liver disease. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We investigated if oxidative and nonoxidative alcohol metabolism pathways, diet-induced obesity, and adipose tissues influenced the development of acute liver injury in a single ethanol binge model.A single ethanol binge was administered to chow-fed or high-fat diet (HFD)-fed wild-type and genetically modified mice.Oral administration of a single dose of ethanol induced acute liver injury and hepatic endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in chow- or HFD-fed mice. Disruption of the Adh1 gene increased blood ethanol concentration and exacerbated acute ethanol-induced ER stress and liver injury in both chow-fed and HFD-fed mice, while disruption of the Aldh2 gene did not affect such hepatic injury despite high blood acetaldehyde levels. Mechanistic studies showed that alcohol, not acetaldehyde, promoted hepatic ER stress, fatty acid synthesis, and increased adipocyte death and lipolysis, contributing to acute liver injury. Increased serum fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), which are formed by an enzyme-mediated esterification of ethanol with fatty acids, were detected in mice after ethanol gavage, with higher levels in Adh1 knockout mice than in wild-type mice. Deletion of the Ces1d gene in mice markedly reduced the acute ethanol-induced increase of blood FAEE levels with a slight but significant reduction of serum aminotransferase levels.Ethanol and its nonoxidative metabolites, FAEEs, not acetaldehyde, promoted acute alcohol-induced liver injury by inducing ER stress, adipocyte death, and lipolysis.

Bio-based controlled release fertilizers (BCRFs) are cost-effective and renewable thus gradually replacing petroleum-based controlled release fertilizers (CRFs). However, most of the study mainly focused on modifying BCRFs to improve controlled-release performance. It is necessary to further increase the functionality of BCRF for expanding the application. A multifunctional double layered bio-based CRF (DCRF) was prepared. Urea was used as the core of fertilizer, bio-based polyurethane was used as the inner coating, and sodium alginate and copper ions formed the hydrogel as the outer coating. In addition, mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with sodium selenate was used to modify the sodium alginate hydrogel (MSN@Se hydrogel). The results showed that the nitrogen longevity of the DCRF was much better than that of urea and BCRF. The selenium nutrient longevity of the DCRF was 40 h, much longer than that of sodium selenate. The DCRF improved the yield and nutritive value of cherry radish (Raphanus sativus L. var.radculus pers) with the elevated contents of selenium, an essential trace element. Moreover, the DCRF showed inhibitory effect on Fusarium oxysporum Schltdl. and could resist soil-borne fungal diseases continuously. Overall, this multifunctional fertilizer has great potential for expanding the use of BCRFs for sustainable development of agriculture.

Recently, Hou et al. shifted the research focus from the function of nuclear sirtuin (SIRT)6 to that of cytoplasmic SIRT6, which deacetylates and activates long-chain acyl-CoA synthase 5 (ACSL5). Their findings provide mechanistic insight into the role of cytoplasmic SIRT6 in fatty acid oxidation, acting as a therapeutic target for combating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Beyond the classical description of eosinophil functions in parasite infections and allergic diseases, emerging evidence supports a critical role of eosinophils in resolving inflammation and promoting tissue remodeling. However, the role of eosinophils in liver injury and the underlying mechanism of their recruitment into the liver remain unclear.Hepatic eosinophils were detected and quantified using flow cytometry and immunohistochemical staining. Eosinophil-deficient (ΔdblGata1) mice were used to investigate the role of eosinophils in 3 models of acute liver injury. In vivo experiments using Il33Hepatic accumulation of eosinophils was observed in patients with acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver failure, whereas few eosinophils were detectable in healthy liver tissues. In mice treated with APAP, carbon tetrachloride or concanavalin A, eosinophils were recruited into the liver and played a profound protective role. Mice deficient of macrophages or IL-33 exhibited impaired hepatic eosinophil recruitment during acute liver injury. CCL24, but not CCL11, was increased after treatment of each hepatotoxin in an IL-33 and macrophage-dependent manner. In vitro experiments demonstrated that IL-33, by stimulating IL-4 release from eosinophils, promoted the production of CCL24 by macrophages.This is the first study to demonstrate that hepatic recruitment of and protection by eosinophils occur commonly in various models of acute liver injury. Our findings support further exploration of eosinophils as a therapeutic target to treat APAP-induced acute liver injury.The current study unveils that eosinophils are recruited into the liver and play a protective function during acute liver injury caused by acetaminophen overdose. The data demonstrate that IL-33-activated eosinophils trigger macrophages to release high amounts of CCL24, which promotes hepatic eosinophil recruitment. Our findings suggest that eosinophils could be an effective cell-based therapy for the treatment of acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury.

With the increasing demand for synthetic rubber, the purification of 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) is of great industrial significance. Herein, the successful removal of n-butene (n-C4H8) and iso-butene (iso-C4H8) from 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) was realized by synthesizing a novel TaOF52– anion-pillared ultramicroporous material TaOFFIVE-3-Ni (also referred to as ZU-96, TaOFFIVE = TaOF52–, 3 = pyrazine). Single-component adsorption isotherms show that TaOFFIVE-3-Ni can achieve the exclusion of n-C4H8 and iso-C4H8 in the low pressure region (0–30 kPa), and uptake C4H6 with a high capacity of 92.78 cm3·cm–3 (298 K and 100 kPa). The uptake ratio of C4H6/iso-C4H8 on TaOFFIVE-3-Ni was 20.83 (298 K and 100 kPa), which was the highest among the state-of-the-art adsorbents reported so far. With the rotation of anion and pyrazine ring, the pore size changes continuously, which makes smaller-size C4H6 enter the channel while larger-size n-C4H8 and iso-C4H8 are completely blocked. The excellent breakthrough performance of TaOFFIVE-3-Ni shows great potential in industrial separation of C4 olefins. The specific adsorption binding sites within ZU-96 was further revealed through the modeling calculation.

Mathematical morphology operations are widely used in image processing such as defect analysis in semiconductor manufacturing and medical image analysis. These data-intensive applications have high requirements during hardware implementation that are challenging for conventional hardware platforms such as central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs). Computation-in-memory (CIM) provides a possible solution for highly efficient morphology operations. In this study, we demonstrate the application of morphology operation with a novel memristor-based auto-detection architecture and demonstrate non-neuromorphic computation on a multi-array-based memristor system. Pixel-by-pixel logic computations with low parallelism are converted to parallel operations using memristors. Moreover, hardware-implemented computer-integrated manufacturing was used to experimentally demonstrate typical defect detection tasks in integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing and medical image analysis. In addition, we developed a new implementation scheme employing a four-layer network to realize small-object detection with high parallelism. The system benchmark based on the hardware measurement results showed significant improvement in the energy efficiency by approximately 358 times and 32 times more than when a CPU and GPU were employed, respectively, exhibiting the advantage of the proposed memristor-based morphology operation.

Automatic seizure detection technology is of great significance to reduce workloads of neurologists for epilepsy diagnosis and treatments. Imbalanced classification is a challenge in seizure detection from long-term continuous EEG recordings, as the durations of the seizure events are much shorter than the non-seizure periods. An imbalanced deep learning model is proposed in this paper to improve the performance of seizure detection. To modify imbalanced EEG data distribution, a generative adversarial network (GAN) that is a strong candidate for data enhancement is built to produce the seizure-period EEG data used for forming a more balanced training set. Next, a pyramidal one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN) is designed to deal with 1D EEG signals and trained on the augmented training set that consists of both original and generated EEG data. Compared to the conventional 2DCNNs, the deep architecture of the 1DCNN reduces the training parameters so as to greatly increase the training speed. The proposed method is evaluated on three publicly available EEG databases. After data augmentation by the GAN, the designed 1DCNN shows much better classification for seizure detection, achieving competitive results over the three EEG databases, which demonstrates the generalizability of this method across different databases. Comparison with other published methods indicates its enhanced detection performance for imbalanced EEG data.

Objective To develop and validate a nomogram for predicting the risk of venous thromboembolism in critically ill patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage. Methods Patients ≥18 years old with primary intracerebral hemorrhage were screened within 24 hours of onset from January 2019 to April 2021. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to screen out independent predictors that were significantly associated with venous thromboembolism. A nomogram was constructed based on the results of a multivariate regression analysis. Discrimination and calibration were used to evaluate performance of the nomogram. A decision curve analysis was used to assess its clinical utility. Results This study enrolled 369 patients. The nomogram included 3 predictors from the regression analysis: D-dimer, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, and Glasgow Coma Scale score on admission. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.794, indicating good discrimination of the nomogram. The nomogram demonstrated calibration curves with slight deviation from the ideal predictions. Decision curve analysis showed that the prediction nomogram was clinically useful. Conclusions This nomogram comprising D-dimer, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score and Glasgow Coma Scale score on admission can accurately predict the risk of venous thromboembolism in critically ill patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.

Rechargeable Li-O2 batteries have captured increasing attention owing to their ultra-high theoretical specific energy. However, this promising system is confronted with the large overpotential, limited discharge capacity and low cyclic life. Herein, three two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum-based compounds of MoN, MoO3 and MoS2 are used as cathode catalysts in Li-O2 batteries. The catalytic performance and electronic structures of these catalysts are compared comprehensively. Electrochemical test results reveal the superior battery performance of MoN cathodes, which deliver the highest specific discharge capacity of approximately 7400 mAh g−1 and the lowest discharge/charge overpotential of 0.19/0.72 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the metallic property of MoN whereas MoO3 and MoS2 are poor conductive. Besides, interface properties between MoN and Li2O2 products as well as reaction pathways of the Li-O2 battery with MoN cathode are also investigated detailedly by DFT calculations, explaining the excellent catalytic properties of MoN at the atomic level. The present work provides intrinsic insights into designing high-performance cathode catalysts for Li-O2 batteries with fine-tuned morphology and electronic characteristics.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease involving motor, cognitive and psychiatric disturbances. HD patients with psychosis symptoms usually have bad prognosis. It is of great significance to explore the clinical, imaging and biological characteristics of HD patients with psychosis. A total of 118 Han Chinese patients with HD confirmed by Huntingtin genetic testing were recruited during 2013–2020. They were assessed by Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) and followed up in an average of 34 months by telephone or clinical visits. Psychosis was determined by the presence of delusions or hallucinations using UHDRS-Problem Behavior Assessment. Data of magnetic resonance imaging (n = 28) and serum neurofilament light chain (NfL, n = 28) were collected in some patients. Among 118 patients (mean age 46.0 years, SD 12.0; female 53.5%), the frequency of psychosis was 14.4% (n = 17) in the cross-sectional analysis and 17.8% (n = 21) in the longitudinal observation. Probands with psychosis were predominantly female (82.3%). They exhibited worse motor, cognitive, behavioral and functional performances compared with patients without psychosis. Furthermore, the lateral ventricle volume was larger in patients with psychosis compared with patients without psychosis (p = 0.0013) while there was no difference in NfL levels between two groups. NfL levels of patients with psychosis were negatively correlated with caudate volumes (r = −0.54, p = 0.044) and white matter volumes (r = −0.57, p = 0.035). In summary, HD patients with psychosis had distinct clinical, imaging and biological features. These features might help clinicians to identify psychosis in HD patients early and provide protective interventions before adverse outcomes occur.

Acquired resistance to BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib is frequently observed in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC), and it is a thorny issue that results in treatment failure. As adaptive responses for vemurafenib treatment, a series of cellular bypasses are response for the adaptive feedback reactivation of ERK signaling, which warrant further investigation.We identified ARF1 (ADP-ribosylation factor 1) as a novel regulator of both vemurafenib resistance and cancer metastasis, its molecular mechanism and potential inhibitor were investigated in this study.DIA-based quantitative proteomics and RNA-seq were performed to systematic analyze the profiling of vemurafenib-resistant RKO cells (RKO-VR) and highly invasive RKO cells (RKO-I8), respectively. Co‑immunoprecipitation assay was performed to detect the interaction of ARF1 and IQGAP1 (IQ-domain GTPase activating protein 1). An ELISA-based drug screen system on FDA-approved drug library was established to screen the compounds against the interaction of ARF1-IQGAP1.The biological functions of ARF1 and LY2835219 were determined by transwell, western blotting, Annexin V-FITC/PI staining and in vivo experimental metastasis assays.We found that ARF1 strongly interacted with IQGAP1 to activate ERK signaling in VR and I8 CRC cells. Deletion of IQGAP1 or inactivation of ARF1 (ARF-T48S) restored the invasive ability induced by ARF1. As ARF1-IQGAP1 interaction is essential for ERK activation, we screened LY2835219 as novel inhibitor of ARF1-IQGAP1 interaction, which inactivated ERK signaling and suppressed CRC metastasis and vemurafenib-resistance in vitro and in vivo with no observed side effect. Furthermore, LY2835219 in combined treatment with vemurafenib exerted significantly inhibitory effect on ARF1-mediated cancer metastasis than used independently.This study uncovers that ARF1-IQGAP1 interaction-mediated ERK signaling reactivation is critical for vemurafenib resistance and cancer metastasis, and that LY2835219 is a promising therapeutic agent for CRC both as a single agent and in combination with vemurafenib.

This work aimed to investigate the effect of blood flow pulsation in patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT). Nine blood flow patterns with different pulsations were designed on the basis of the blood flow data of a patient with PT (control group; cases with blood flow pulsation indexes that had decreased by 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%; and cases with blood flow pulsation indexes that had increased by 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%). The transient-state multiphysics coupling method was used to clarify the biomechanical and acoustic changes that had occurred under different blood flow pulsations. Results showed that blood flow impacted directly the vessel wall in the sigmoid sinus wall dehiscence (SSWD) area. The impact velocity of the blood flow slowed with the decrement in blood flow pulsation index but increased with the increase in blood flow pulsation index. With the reduction in blood flow pulsation index, the average pressure of the SSWD area decreased by 1.84, 3.93, 6.23, and 8.31 Pa; the average displacement of the vessel wall in the SSWD area decreased by 0.11, 0.23, 0.36, and 0.48 µm; and the average sound pressure level at the tympanum decreased by 2.2, 4.16, 7.14, and 12.97 dB. By contrast, with the increase in blood flow pulsation index, the average pressure increased by 2.46, 4.21, 6.28, and 8.56; the average displacement increased by 0.14, 0.2, 0.36, and 0.49 µm; and the average sound pressure level increased by 1.32, 2.87, 4.15, and 5.19 dB. Statistical analysis revealed that the pathological induction of PT had a strong quadratic correlation with the pulsation of blood flow. The degree of PT could be attenuated by reducing blood flow pulsation. Such an approach would aid clinical treatment. The conclusion obtained in this work would present a theoretical basis for the treatment of patients with PT.

Objective to observe the clinical effect of electroacupuncture on postpartum urinary retention (PPUR) through a randomized controlled study. Methods seventy-two PPUR puerperae who met the inclusion criteria were divided into the observation group (electroacupuncture at Ciliao (次髎BL32) and Zhōngliao (中髎BL33) group) and the control group (sham acupuncture group) according to the random number table method, with 36 cases in each. Urine catheters were retained. After 3 days of treatment, the therapeutic effect of PPUR was compared between the two groups. Results in the observation group, the first urination time was significantly earlier than that in the control group, the first urination volume was significantly more than that in the control group, the bladder residual urine volume was significantly less than that in the control group, and the urinary infection was significantly less than that in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (all P Conclusion the therapeutic value of electroacupuncture at BL32 and BL33 for primiparae with PPUR is significantly obvious. This therapy is worthy of clinical promotion.

Hydroliquefaction behavior of preasphaltenes, derived from direct coal liquefaction, was carried out in a 30 mL autoclave with FeS + S catalyst and tetralin at initial hydrogen of 5.0 MPa, residence time of 0–60 min and reaction temperature of 380–440°C in order to optimize the conditions of direct coal liquefaction and improve oil yield. The products distribution and kinetic parameters of preasphaltenes catalytic hydroliquefaction were investigated. A new kinetic model was established to simulate the preasphalteneshydroliquefaction catalyzed by FeS + S catalyst using lump kinetic model. It was found that preasphaltenes were hydroliquefaction into asphaltenes and char directly, and then asphaltenes were hydrocracked into oil + gas products. Regressive reactions of preasphaltenes to char and asphaltenes to preasphaltenes occurred at higher temperatures. Higher temperature and longer time were favorable for increasing the conversion of preasphaltenes and the oil + gas yield. The hydroliquefaction of preasphaltenes under 440°C and 60 min reached 79.45% with 34.7% of oil + gas yield. The hydroliquefaction conversions calculated from the model agreed well with the experimental data, and the activation energies ranged within 50–245 kJ/mol.

Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of electroacupuncture treatment for chloasma in young and middle-aged women. Methods Sixty young and middle-aged female patients with chloasma were divided into treatment group (n = 30) and control group (n = 30) according to random number table. In the treatment group, the electroacupuncture was applied to the facial acupoints and “Vagus” in the cavity of concha in the ear. The selection of facial acupoints was relating to the running course of facial nerve trunk: Yifēng (翳风 TE17), Shangguān (上关 GB3)—Sīzhukōng (丝竹空 TE 23) (Temporal branch), Xiaguān (下关 ST7)—Sibai (四白 ST2) (Zygomatic branch), Qiānzheng (牵正 Extra) —Quanliao (颧髎 SI18) (Zygomatic branch), Jiāchē (颊车 ST6) —Jiāchengjiāng (夹承浆Extra) (Buccal branch), Hegǔ (合谷LI 4). Electro-stimulation was adopted at “Vagus” in the cavity of concha in the ear (two distribution points of the vagus in the cavity of concha of each ear). The control group received conventional acupuncture (surrounding method of needling at the Ashi points in the facial lesion area and 15 acupoints which were selected in the highest frequency in the conventional acupuncture treatment). After 8 weeks of treatment, the clinical effects were compared.The total score of facial skin lesion, score of skin lesion color, score of lesion area, and effective rate of treatment for chloasma were used to evaluate the clinical effect of the two groups before and after treatment. Results After treatment, the effective rate of the treatment group was 95.00%, that of the control group was 67.50%. The effect of the treatment group was better than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (χ2 = 9.928, P = 0.002). Before treatment, there was no difference in the area score, color score, and total score of skin lesions between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, the area score, color score, and total score of skin lesions in the treatment group were (1.05±0.64), (1.05±0.64), and (2.10±0.98) points respectively, while those in the control group were (1.38±0.63), (1.28±0.75), and (2.65±1.19) points respectively.The area score, color score, and total score of skin lesions in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (all P Conclusion electroacupuncture is more effective than conventional acupuncture in treating chloasma in young and middle-aged women.

High pathogenicity island (HPI), which is widely distributed in Escherichia coli (E. coli), can enhance the pathogenicity of E. coli. Thus the HPI positive E. coli could pose a threat to human and animal health. It remains to be elucidated how HPI affects the virulence of pathogenic E. coli. Autophagy is an important mechanism to maintain cellular homeostasis and an innate immunity responses of organisms against pathogens. The interaction between pathogenic E. coli possessing HPI (E. coli HPI) and host autophagy system has not been reported. In this study, it was demonstrated that pathogenic E. coli induced autophagy in 3D4/21 macrophages and HPI was associated with enhanced autophagy through transmission electron microscopy, immunofluorescence and real-time PCR. The PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway is an important negative regulatory pathway for autophagy. Through detecting the expression of key genes of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, it was speculated that HPI enhanced the inhibition of the signaling pathway stimulated by pathogenic E. coli. Furthermore, HPI inhibited the secretion of IFN-γ, while the presence of HPI did not significantly affect the secretion of IL-1β. This work is the first attempt to explore the interplay between HPI carried by pathogenic E. coli and host cell autophagy. The findings might enable better understanding of the contribution of HPI to pathogenicity.

In this paper, a novel joint loss Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) framework is proposed for thermography nondestructive testing named Defect-Detection Network (DeftectNet). A new joint loss function that incorporates both the modified GAN loss and penalty loss is proposed. The strategy enables the training process to be more stable and to significantly improve the detection rate. The obtained result shows that the proposed joint loss can better capture the salient features in order to improve the detection accuracy. In order to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method, experimental studies have been carried out for inner debond defects on both regular and irregular shaped carbon fiber reinforced polymer/plastic (CFRP) specimens. A comparison experiment has been undertaken to study the proposed method with other current state-of-the-art deep semantic segmentation algorithms. The promising results have been obtained where the performance of the proposed method can achieve end-to-end detection of defects.

Soft and wearable electronics have transformed healthcare monitoring, leading to the public awareness of physical fitness and unprecedented prosperity of personalized health management by unlocking insightful healthcare information to end-users in real-time and at anywhere. Thus, it has been greatly encouraging people to leave the locker room to sweat, and monitor their health for a continual period at exactly the same time. However, longstanding limitations on temperature stability, hydrated stability, and mechanical stability have limited the application of these electronic devices. Luckily, a new generation of technologies is coming online that is bringing soft electronics to mainstream applications. This review highlights innovations in materials and structure design that have begun to enable the function of soft electronic devices in conditions of varying temperature, humidity, and mechanical deformations, even in extreme conditions, and discusses ongoing challenges and opportunities for further developing soft and wearable electronics for health monitoring in varying environment.

The hybrid lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs) have been limited by the sluggish electrochemical catalytic performance towards both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Previous research has utilizing the light illumination to promote the charge process in non-aqueous electrolyte. However, the organic electrolyte has been blamed for the poor electrochemical stability and volatilization during illumination. For the first time, photo-enhanced aqueous LOBs have been promoted, where the reaction mechanism of OER is familiar with photo electrochemical (PEC) water-oxidation. The α-Fe2O3 nanorods and BiVO4 nanoplates are synthesized by the hydrothermal method combined with heat treatment, showing good photo-electrocatalytic property. Herein, the α-Fe2O3 electrode exhibits a superior longtime stability than the BiVO4 nanoplates, which suffer from the severe photo-corrosion. The photo-assisted hybrid Li–O2 battery based on α-Fe2O3 electrode is realized with a discharge potential of 2.56 ​V. Compared with the traditional hybrid LOBs, the charge potential is reduced from 3.96 ​V to 3.15 ​V. This work indicates that most n-type semiconductors used in PEC water-oxidation can have positive effect on the charge process in hybrid LOBs.
