Abstract

The tagged quasi-free np→npπ+π- reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon (s~2.42 GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions of solid statistics for π+π- production in np collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the np→npπ+π- reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the t-channel with δδ contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the π+π- invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass M~2.38 GeV and with width Γ~70 MeV.

Abstract

Employing the Bonn–Gatchina partial wave analysis framework (PWA), we have analyzed HADES data of the reaction p(3.5 GeV)+p→pK+Λ. This reaction might contain information about the kaonic cluster “ppK−” (with quantum numbers JP=0− and total isospin I=1/2) via its decay into pΛ. Due to interference effects in our coherent description of the data, a hypothetical K‾NN (or, specifically “ppK−”) cluster signal need not necessarily show up as a pronounced feature (e.g. a peak) in an invariant mass spectrum like pΛ. Our PWA analysis includes a variety of resonant and non-resonant intermediate states and delivers a good description of our data (various angular distributions and two-hadron invariant mass spectra) without a contribution of a K‾NN cluster. At a confidence level of CLs=95% such a cluster cannot contribute more than 2–12% to the total cross section with a pK+Λ final state, which translates into a production cross-section between 0.7 μb and 4.2 μb, respectively. Abstract

The reaction p ( @ 3.5 GeV ) + p → p + Λ + K + can be studied to search for the existence of kaonic bound states like p p K − leading to this final state. This effort has been motivated by the assumption that in p + p collisions the Λ ( 1405 ) resonance can act as a doorway to the formation of the kaonic bound states. The status of this analysis within the HADES Collaboration, with particular emphasis on the comparison to simulations, is shown in this work and the deviation method utilized by the DISTO Collaboration in a similar analysis is discussed. The outcome suggests the employment of a partial wave analysis do disentangle the different contributions to the measured p K + Λ final state.

Abstract

We study the production of Σ ± π ∓ p K + particle quartets in p + p reactions at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy. The data were taken with the HADES experiment at GSI. This report evaluates the contribution of resonances like Λ ( 1405 ) , Σ ( 1385 ) 0 , Λ ( 1520 ) , Δ ( 1232 ) , N ⁎ and K ⁎ 0 to the Σ ± π ∓ p K + final state. The resulting simulation model is compared to the experimental data in several angular distributions and it shows itself as suitable to evaluate the acceptance corrections properly.

Abstract

The emission of e+ e- pairs from C + C collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon has been investigated. The measured production probabilities, spanning from the π0-Dalitz to the ρ / ω invariant-mass region, display a strong excess above the cocktail of standard hadronic sources. The bombarding-energy dependence of this excess is found to scale like pion production, rather than like eta production. The data are in good agreement with results obtained in the former DLS experiment. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

EI; We report the first observation of coherent pion production induced by a heavy ion charge exchange reaction. The ($^12$C,$^12$N) reaction [D. Bachelier et al., Phys. Lett. B 172 (1986) 23; M. Roy-Stephan et al., Nucl. Phys. A 488 (1988) 178] at 1.1 GeV/nucleon has been used to shine negative (off-shell) pions on nuclei and observe (on-shell) pions, leaving the target nucleus in its ground state. The experiment was performed at the Laboratoire National Saturne with the SPES4$_\pi$ setup [Laurent Farhi PHD thesis IPNO-T97-12, Universite d'Orsay, 1997; Rasmus Dahl Ph.D., Niels Bohr Institutet, Copenhagen (1999)].

Abstract

The High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer HADES has been recently commissioned at GSI, Darmstadt. It has been designed for systematic studies of hadron properties inside nuclear matter. We report first preliminary results on invariant masses e + e - -pairs which were measured in 12 C + 12 C collisions at E kin = 2 GeV ⋅ A . The analysis methods are briefly outlined and a comparison with detailed Monte-Carlo simulations is shown.

11. High-energy argon ion bombardment of alkali iodides at low temperatures

Abstract

The mixed alkali iodide K0.8Rb0.2I has been bombarded with 13.6 MeV/A argon ions over a range of temperatures. Unlike KI and RbI that show class-I behaviour at low temperature under energetic heavy ion bombardment, K0.8Rb0.2I displays distinctly different behaviour. At 20 K, the F centre production is totally suppressed and is negligible at 100 K; the formation of F+–I centre pairs would only in part account for this effect. The overall production rate of defects at 20 K is larger than that at 100 K. During the lowest temperature bombardment at 20 K, defect species such as H and I centres, which are known to have low thermal stability, are observed suggesting that thermal spike effects do not appear to affect the creation and stabilisation of the defects. At all temperatures of ion bombardment the F/V centre ratio in K0.8Rb0.2I is much smaller than that in the pure iodides KI and RbI. Nonetheless the halogen interstitial centres as studied by annealing and subsequent Raman measurements appear relatively similar. The results indicate a modified defect production mechanism in K0.8Rb0.2I under heavy ion bombardment; in support of this conclusion X-irradiation of the mixed crystal at 100 and 200 K showed conventional behaviour.

Abstract

Data are presented on the 12 C ( 3 He , t π + ) reaction at 2 GeV bombarding energy. In coincidence with forward scattered tritons, pions are momentum-analysed in a large acceptance detector. For events where the target is left in its g.s. or low-lying states, the angular correlation between the momentum transfer vector and the momentum of the pion is sharply peaked at small relative angles.

13. Creation of molecular defects in alkali iodide crystals by irradiation with fast heavy ions

Abstract

We show for the first time that irradiation at room temperature of alkali iodide crystals by fast heavy ions ( 40 Ar 14+ ions of 5.53 MeV/A at a fluence of 10 13 ions/cm 2 ) leads to the formation of V-type defects. By means of UV visible optical absorption and resonant Raman scattering measurements, we have identified I − 3 , I − 5 and (I 2 ) n , in Kl and only I − 3 and I − 5 in RbI irradiated under similar conditions. These preliminary results are consistent with previous investigations obtained in iodide crystals after exposure to X or γ rays at room temperature.

Abstract

The energy levels of 28P were studied with the 28Si(τ, t)28P reaction at a bombarding energy of 35 MeV and 15 keV resolution (FWHM). Excitation energies were measured for 30 separated levels or multiplets with a precision of ≈ 5 keV up to 3.911 MeV and ≈ 10 keV up to 5.19 MeV (21 of these levels were precisely determined for the first time). Spectroscopic information was derived for 22 levels on the basis of the transfered-L. shape analogy of their experimental angular distributions. Comparison was made with DWBA calculations. Some previous Jπ ambiguities are now removed and we propose spectroscopic assignments up to 3.91 MeV. Odd parity levels appear above 3.2 MeV. Comparison was made with the other components of the A = 28, T = 1 isobaric triplet, in particular with the mirror nucleus 28Al.

Abstract

The 76 Ge(p, p′) inelastic scattering has been studied at 22 MeV with an overall resolution of 10 keV using a tandem Van de Graaff and a split-pole magnetic spectrometer. Angular distributions have been obtained for about 40 levels in 76 Ge. Vibrational and asymmetric rotor model CC calculations and DWBA calculations have been made. Spin and parity assignments have been deduced.

Abstract

The (6Li,6Li') scattering on 70Ge and 72Ge has been studied at 44 MeV using a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator and a split-pole magnetic spectrometer, with an overall energy resolution of 80 keV. Angular distributions have been obtained for 10 states in 70Ge and 72Ge. The 21+ and 31− states are strongly excited in comparison with the 02+, 22+, and 41+ states. The data have been analysed with the distorted-wave Born approximation and coupled-channels calculations based on the (harmonic and anharmonic) vibrational model and asymmetric rotor model.

Abstract

The 32S(3He, t)32Cl reaction was studied at 34.5 MeV incident energy. Thirty-four energy levels were identified in 32Cl. Spectroscopic information was derived from the angular distribution shapes for twenty-six levels and corroborated by Coulomb displacement energy calculations. Our level scheme for 32Cl corresponds very well to that for 32P up to Ex ∼ 3 MeV.

Abstract

The (p, p′) inelastic scattering on 68 Zn and 70 Zn has been measured at 22 MeV incident energy with an overall energy resolution of 14 keV for 68 Zn and 24 keV for 70 Zn using a tandem Van de Graaff and a split-pole magnetic spectrometer. Differential cross sections were obtained for levels up to 4.9 and 4.4 MeV excitation energy for 68 Zn and 70 Zn respectively. Experimental cross sections are compared with DWBA calculations, asymmetric rotor model, harmonic and anharmonic vibrational models coupled-channels calculations. Spin and parity assignments have been deduced for both isotopes. Results for 64 Zn, 66 Zn, 68 Zn and 70 Zn are discussed. Comparison between the deformation lengths deduced from these measurements and those derived from similar analysis using other projectiles, for the natural even-even Zn and Ge nuclei, are made; also, comparison between the structure of low-lying states of these nuclei are made.
