Every state in the United States has established laws that allow an unharmed newborn to be relinquished to personnel in a safe haven, such as hospital emergency departments, without legal penalty to the parents. These Safe Haven, Baby Moses, or Safe Surrender laws are in place so that mothers in crisis can safely and legally relinquish their babies at a designated location where they can be protected and given medical care until a permanent home can be found. It is important for health care professionals to know about and understand their state’s law and how to respond should an infant be surrendered at their facility. No articles were found in the peer-reviewed literature that describe a method to evaluate nurse competency during infant relinquishment at a Safe Haven location. This article will describe commonalities and differences among these Safe Haven Laws, responsibilities of the hospital and staff receiving a relinquished infant, and 1 hospital’s experience when running an infant relinquishment drill in their emergency department.

We investigated the alloy system of Fe 86−6 Cu 1 Nb x B 13 (X=4, 5, 7) in order to obtain information on the crystallisation behaviour of the amorphous precursor alloy and the resulting structural composition. Onset temperatures of different crystallisation steps were studied with DSC measurements. Dilatometric and thermomagnetic measurements as well as those of the electrical resistivity were applied in order to detect changes not being correlated with a change of the heat capacity. For a structural investigation, Mossbauer effect and electron diffraction experiments were carried out. Our results show that — up to a certain annealing temperature depending on the Nb content — there is only a nanocrystalline a-Fe phase, embedded in an amorphous matrix. At higher annealing temperatures crystalline FeB phases appear.

A novel hybrid two-dimensional (2-D)/three-dimensional (3-D) numerical technique is presented to model 3-D fountain flows in thin cavities as encountered in injection molding processes. At the fountain flow region, where all three velocity components are significant, the governing 3-D fluid flow equations are solved by using a pressure Poisson formulation. Behind the flow front, where out of plane flows are negligible, the 2-D Hele-Shaw formulation is employed, largely reducing the number of unknowns in comparison to a fully-three-dimensional formulation. Boundary fitted coordinate systems (BFCS) together with the finite difference method (FDM) are used to solve the governing equations on a non-staggered grid. The formulation is capable of handling non-linearities in the material behavior due to the shear-thinning characteristics of typical resin systems. Results are presented for isothermal flow of Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids through diverging and converging flow sections.
