The neural fate of task-irrelevant emotional faces under different awareness conditions is poorly understood. Here, we examined the electrophysiological activity during an experiment where the location of target information (contrast-induced line) was manipulated orthogonally to the location of task-irrelevant fearful faces, under subliminal or supraliminal viewing conditions. We found that only target lines elicited an N2-posterior-contralateral (N2pc), indexing spatial attention shifting, in the supraliminal condition. No N2pc was found for the targets in the subliminal condition or for task-irrelevant fearful faces in either conditions. However, the mere presence of a fearful face enhanced early neural activity between 200 and 300 ms only in the subliminal condition. Additionally, the presence of a target line, but not a fearful face, enhanced the P3. Our results suggest that the N2pc is dependent on visual awareness and task-relevancy of the information and that laterally-presented task-irrelevant fearful expressions can be processed without awareness during early visual processing.

During visual perception, the brain must combine its predictions about what is to be perceived with incoming relevant information. The present study investigated how this process interacts with attention by using event-related potentials that index these cognitive mechanisms. Specifically, this study focused on examining how the amplitudes of the N170, N2pc, and N300 would be modulated by violations of expectations for spatial and featural attributes of visual stimuli. Participants viewed a series of shape stimuli in which a salient shape moved across a set of circular locations so that the trajectory of the shape implied the final position and shape of the stimulus. The final salient stimuli occurred in one of four possible outcomes: predictable position and shape, predictable position but unpredictable shape, unpredictable position but predictable shape, and unpredictable position and shape. The N170 was enhanced by unpredictable positions and shapes, whereas the N300 was enlarged only by unpredictable positions. The N2pc was not modulated by violations of expectations for shapes or positions. Additionally, it was observed post-hoc that the P1pc amplitude was increased by unpredictable shapes. These findings revealed that incorrect prediction increases neural activity. Furthermore, they suggest that prediction and attention interact differently in different stages of visual perception, depending on the type of attention being engaged: The N170 indexes initial prediction error signalling irrespective of the type of information (spatial or featural) in which error occurs, followed by the N300 as a marker of prediction updating involving reorientation of spatial attention.

It remains unclear to date whether spatial attention towards emotional faces is contingent on, or independent of visual awareness. To investigate this question, a bilateral attentional blink paradigm was used in which lateralised fearful faces were presented at various levels of detectability. Twenty-six healthy participants were presented with two rapid serial streams of human faces, while they attempted to detect a pair of target faces (T2) displayed in close or distant succession of a first target pair (T1). Spatial attention shifting to the T2 fearful faces, indexed by the N2-posterior-contralateral component, was dependent on visual awareness and its magnitude covaried with the visual awareness negativity, a neural marker of awareness at the perceptual level. Additionally, information consolidation in working memory, indexed by the sustained posterior contralateral negativity, positively correlated with the level of visual awareness and spatial attention shifting. These findings demonstrate that spatial attention shifting to fearful faces depends on visual awareness, and these early processes are closely linked to information maintenance in working memory.

Sexual desire can be triggered by external (visual, tactile, auditory, olfactory) or internal (memories, fantasies) stimuli. However, few studies have investigated these different components of sexual desire. In our investigation, we focused on visual stimuli with the aim of establishing whether or not there exists a specific pattern of visual exploration linked to sexual desire among male and female subjects. In another words, we wanted to investigated what parts of the body visually explored are the more relevant to feel sexual desire. To assess this question, we conducted an eye-tracking study in which participants made a judgment of sexual desire, during the visualization of explicit visual stimuli. The main results for male viewers revealed that they explored the body longer than the face (P = .05). Within the body area, the chest region was scanned more extensively than the abdomen (P = .014) and the genital area (P = .003). There were no difference between the abdomen and the genital area. For female viewers, the pattern of exploration showed they explored the body longer than the face (P = .05). We examined whether semantic processing occurs without awareness using continuous flash suppression (CFS). In two priming tasks, participants were required to judge whether a target was a word or a non-word, and to report whether the masked prime was visible. Experiment 1 manipulated the lexical congruency between the prime-target pairs and Experiment 2 manipulated their semantic relatedness. Despite the absence of behavioral priming effects (Experiment 1), the ERP results revealed that an N4 component was sensitive to the prime-target lexical congruency (Experiment 1) and semantic relatedness (Experiment 2) when the prime was rendered invisible under CFS. However, these results were reversed with respect to those that emerged when the stimuli were perceived consciously. Our findings suggest that some form of lexical and semantic processing can occur during CFS-induced unawareness, but are associated with different electrophysiological outcomes.

To screen for patients at risk for memory decline after temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery, selective amobarbital procedures, such as injection into the anterior choroidal artery (ACA-IAT), are sometimes used. We investigated the extent of the territory affected during ACA-IAT and its predictive value with respect to postoperative memory. Seventeen patients with TLE underwent ACA-IAT. In 9 of 17 patients, intraarterial SPECT co-registrated to MRI allowed delineation of amobarbital-perfused structures. Another subgroup of 9 of 17 patients underwent anterior temporal lobectomy. Verbal memory was tested pre- and postoperatively and during ACA-IAT. Major variations in the ACA-IAT perfusion pattern occurred and were not correlated with the verbal memory scores during ACA-IAT. Postoperatively, no patient experienced a severe verbal memory decline, but individual postoperative performance was not correlated with results during ACA-IAT. Our study suggests that ACA-IAT can be used to screen for severe postoperative amnesia in inconclusive cases, but cannot predict individual outcome, even when the perfusion pattern is taken into account.

Evidence in healthy human subjects has suggested that angry faces may be enhanced during spatial processing, perhaps even "popping-out" of a crowd. These contentions have remained controversial, but two recent reports in patients suffering from unilateral spatial neglect have lent some support to these views, suggesting that emotional faces capture attention more efficiently than neutral stimuli in the neglected field. Here, we investigate this phenomenon in a patient suffering from severe Balint's syndrome and consequent simultanagnosia. Using a visual search paradigm, we studied differences in the detection of angry, happy and neutral faces, as well as non-emotional stimuli. Results revealed that emotionally expressive faces, in particular anger, were detected more efficiently than other stimuli. These findings corroborate claims that facial expressions of emotion constitute a specific category of stimuli that attract attention more effectively, and are processed prior to attentional engagement.

One of the critical functions of vision is to provide information about other individuals. Neuroimaging experiments examining the cortical regions that analyze the appearance of other people have found partially overlapping networks that respond selectively to human faces and bodies. In event-related potential (ERP) studies, faces systematically elicit a negative component peaking 170 ms after presentation - the N170. To characterize the electrophysiological response to human bodies, we compared the ERPs elicited by faces, bodies and various control stimuli. In Experiment 1, a comparison of ERPs elicited by faces, bodies, objects and places showed that pictures of the human body (without the head) elicit a negative component peaking at 190 ms (an N190). While broadly similar to the N170, the N190 differs in both spatial distribution and amplitude from the N1 components elicited by faces, objects and scenes and peaks significantly later than the N170. The difference between N190 and N170 was further supported using topographic analyses of ERPs and source localization techniques. A unique, stable map topography was found to characterize human bodies between 130 and 230 ms. In Experiment 2, we tested the four conditions from Experiment 1, as well as intact and scrambled silhouettes and stick figures of the human body. We found that intact silhouettes and stick figures elicited significantly greater N190 amplitudes than their scrambled counterparts. Thus, the N190 generalizes to some degree to schematic depictions of the human form. Overall, our findings are consistent with intertwined, but functionally distinct, neural representations of the human face and body.

Brain imaging studies have repeatedly shown a dominant involvement of the left hemisphere (LH) in the processing of semantic information. However, some behavioural studies have suggested that the right hemisphere (RH) also processes lexico-semantic information although in a qualitatively different way. More specifically, it has been proposed that the LH shows a greater sensitivity to categorical (CR, or intraconceptual) relationships, while the RH appears more sensitive to associative (AR, or interconceptual) ones. Using semantically unrelated and related word pairs comprised of CR and AR, our aim in this study was to verify the involvement of the RH in the processing of associative relationships. Strength-independent topographical analysis of ERP map series using temporal segmentation procedures showed the same sequence of eight stable map segments in CR and AR conditions. Statistical analysis revealed no difference between conditions either in terms of duration or in terms of time of occurrence of the segmentation maps. However, field strength comparisons between the two conditions using the global field power measure at each time point revealed higher field strength in CR than in AR condition between 300 and 330 ms. Distributed source localisation showed a similar pattern of activation during this time period, involving predominantly left frontal regions. Nevertheless, the strength of the source found in the left medial frontal gyrus differed between CR than AR conditions, thus explaining the differences observed in field strength. Our data suggest that the processing of CR and AR words depend on the same neural network in the LH.

We review recent methodological advances in electromagnetic source imaging and present EEG data from our laboratory obtained by application of these methods. There are two principal steps in our analysis of multichannel electromagnetic recordings: (i) the determination of functionally relevant time periods in the ongoing electric activity and (ii) the localization of the sources in the brain that generate these activities recorded on the scalp. We propose a temporal segmentation of the time-varying activity, which is based on determination of changes in the topography of the electric fields, as an approach to the first step, and a distributed linear inverse solution based on realistic head models as an approach to the second step. Data from studies of visual motion perception, visuo-motor transfer, mental imagery, semantic decision, and cognitive interference illustrate that this analysis allows us to define the patterns of electric activity that are present at given time periods after stimulus presentation, as well as those time periods where significantly different patterns appear between different stimuli and tasks. The presented data show rapid and parallel activation of different areas within complex neuronal networks, including early activity of brain regions remote from the primary sensory areas. In addition, the data indicate information exchange between homologous areas of the two hemispheres in cases where unilateral stimulus presentation requires interhemispheric transfer.

Using visual half-field presentations of words to the right (RVF) and to the left visual field (LVF), this study investigated the time course of the hemispheric involvement in the processing of semantic category information. Multi-channel event related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 15 healthy subjects during a categorisation task of sequentially presented word pairs. Subjects had to judge mentally after the appearance of the second word whether the words of a pair were semantically related (SR) or not (SU). ERPs were computed, from 100 ms before the onset of the second word to 600 ms, for SR and SU conditions in the LVF and in the RVF separately. The temporal segmentation of ERP map series into sequences of quasi-stable map configurations revealed a total of seven segments in each visual field of which only the first five (S1-S5, appearing between 70 and 400 ms) showed different map configurations as a function of visual field but presented a similar temporal sequence in both visual fields. By contrast, of the last two segments (S6 and S7) which appeared between approximately 400 and approximately 600 ms, only S7 differentiated SR and SU conditions in terms of its duration. Source localisation analysis of the segments showed that following the initial activation of posterior brain regions as a function of the visual field of presentation, a common neural network was activated in the left hemisphere (LH) although the dynamics of activation varied as a function of visual field. Concerning the role of the right hemisphere (RH) in lexico-semantic processing, the results presented here appear to be compatible with a 'callosal relay model' and suggest that, in healthy subjects, information is transferred rapidly ( approximately 150 ms) from the RH to the language dominant-LH.

There is an ongoing debate in cognitive neuroscience about the time course and the functional independence of the different processes involved in encoding written language material. New data indicate very fast and highly parallel language analysis networks in the brain. Here we demonstrate a methodological approach to study the temporal dynamics of this network by searching for time periods where different task demands emphasize different aspects of the network. Multi-channel event related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a semantic and a phonological reading task from 14 healthy subjects. Signals were analyzed exclusively on the basis of the spatial configuration of the electric potential distributions (ERP maps), since differences in these spatial patterns directly reflect changes in the configuration of the active sources in the brain. This analysis did not reveal any differences of the evoked brain electric fields between the two tasks up to 280 ms post-stimulus. The ERP maps then differed for a brief period between 280 and 380 ms, before they were similar again. The analysis of the maps using a global linear localization procedure revealed a network of areas, active in both tasks, that mainly involved the left postero-temporal and left antero-temporal regions. The left posterior activation was found already around 100 ms post-stimulus, indicating that language-specific functions appear early in time. We therefore conclude that phonological and semantic processing are essentially performed in both tasks and that only late decision-related processes influence the relative strength of activity of the different modules in the complex language network.

Primary reading epilepsy (PRE) is a rare syndrome in which epileptic seizures are electively provoked by reading. Cognitive neuropsychology has demonstrated the existence of at least two pathways for reading, the sublexical pathway involved in converting graphemes to phonemes, and the lexical pathway used when meaning is conveyed. Which of these specific pathways is relevant in triggering epileptic discharges remains largely unknown. We report the case of a patient suffering from PRE in which the two routes were distinguished on the basis of the reading material employed. Significantly less epileptic discharges were observed when the patient read non-words than words. In view of our findings, we tentatively contrast a lexical form of PRE, triggered by the activation of semantic knowledge structures, with a sublexical form, triggered by non-word reading. Evidence from the literature suggests that the former is characterized by bilateral EEG activating patterns, whereas the latter involves preferentially the left hemisphere.

In two experiments, one with instrumental and one with synthesized tunes, 20 musicians and 20 non-musicians were requested to identify popular melodies presented dichotically. When the tempo of the melodies is fast enough to render their identification difficult, a right-ear advantage appears in the former group and a left-ear advantage in the latter, a pattern observed with both types of stimuli. It is suggested that these lateralization effects depend not only on the level of competence of the subjects, as hypothesized by Bever and Chiarello (Science, Vol. 185, pp. 537-539, 1974), but also on the musical features of the stimuli.
