Graphical abstract, Introduction Obtaining a certain bone volume is an important goal in implantology or orthopedics. Thus, after tooth extraction, quite a lot of horizontal and vertical alveolar bone is lost in time and can be detrimental to the implant treatment outcome, while the treatment of critical bone defects is a considerable challenge for surgery. Objectives In this study we designed a new in vivo model as an useful experimental tool to assess guided bone regeneration (GBR) using a computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD-CAM) space-maintaining barrier. Methods The barrier was 3D printed with three progressive heights, surgically placed on rat femur, and GBR results were analyzed at 2, 4, and 8 weeks by X-ray and bone mineral density analysis, histology/morphometry and by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry for osteogenesis and angiogenesis evaluation. Results The obtained results show that the proposed experimental model provides a real-time useful information on progressive bone tissue formation, which depends on the volume of isolated space created for GBR and on molecular events that lead to satisfactory vertical and horizontal bone augmentation and osteointegration. Conclusion In conclusion, the proposed customized three-dome space-maintaining barrier is suitable as an experimental tool to assess the potential of using the designed barriers in dentistry and orthopedics to promote the formation of new bone and determine their space- and time-dependent limitations. Meanwhile, guided bone augmentation for dentistry requires subsequent evaluation on an alveolar bone preclinical model followed by clinical implementation.

In this paper, we present for the first time the obtaining and characterization of new antibacterial and biocompatible nano-ZnO–bacterial cellulose (BC) material with controlled interfaces for studying in vitro microorganisms (Escherichia Coli (ATCC 8737), B. subtilis Spizizenii Nakamura (ATCC 6633), Candida albicans (ATCC10231)) and mammalian cells (human dermal fibroblast cells) response. The use of BC based material with controlled characteristics in terms of quantity and distribution of ZnO onto BC membrane (with 2D and 3D fibers arrangement) is directly correlated with the surface chemical and topographical properties, the method of preparation, and also with the type of cells implied for the specific application within the bioengineering fields. In our study, the uniform distribution and the control on the quantity of ZnO nanoparticles onto 3D BC were obtained using matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) method. The influence on particle distribution onto 3D bio cellulose were investigated based on two types of solvents (water and chloroform) involved in target preparation within MAPLE deposition. The attachment of the nanoparticles to the bacterial cellulose surface and fibrils was demonstrated by SEM and FT-IR studies. The BC-ZnO showed both resistance to bacteria-sticking and non-cytotoxic effect on the human dermal fibroblasts cells at a mass distribution onto surface of 1.68 µg ZnO NPS/mm2. These results represent a good premise in terms of tailoring BC substrates with ZnO particles that could determine or enhance both the biocompatibility and antibacterial properties of BC-composite materials. In this work, the progress made by the positron group from ELI-NP in the design of a new slow positron beam line is summarized. The rays of a brilliant gamma beam will be used to produce a slow positron beam of high intensity. The main results of the simulations, done for the geometry optimization of the Converter/Moderator Assembly (CMA) for γ -to-slow e + conversion, are reported. By using the γ -beam with energy of up to 3.5 MeV and intensity of 2 . 4 × 1 0 10 γ s − 1 , the slow e + beam can be obtained with a maximum intensity of ∼ 2 × 1 0 6 s−1 with tungsten or platinum CMA. Solid neon moderation is applicable, and a successful implementation will result in a slow e + beam of intensity > 1 0 7 s − 1 . The CMA can be operated with a central hole ( ⌀ = 2 . 5 mm) in the foils in parasitic mode, i . e . , simultaneously with other γ -beam experiments, at the cost of reduced intensity by 18%. Furthermore, details on the slow positron transport and the spectroscopic systems, which are under construction, are provided.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of co-doping with aluminum or iron on structure, thermal behavior, morphology and biocompatibility of Y-TZP (yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals). Powders with stoichiometries Zr 0.88 Y 0.12 O 2-δ and Zr 0.85 Y 0.12 M 0.03 O 2-δ (M = Fe, Al) have been synthesized using a Pechini method. Powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dilatometry. They were further shaped into pellets and sintered at 1300 °C for 10 h. The sinters were investigated by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDXS). Sintered discs were inserted in oral mucosa of laboratory rats for six weeks. The local tissular reaction was evaluated by optical microscopy and histological study. Tested discs were investigated by SEM-EDXS and Raman spectroscopy. Small additions of aluminum and iron led to an improvement in powder sintering behavior of tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia polycrystals, while the morphology of the sinters is strongly affected. Biocompatibility tests shown that the tested samples tend to be surrounded by fibrous connective tissue. No major adverse reaction was evidenced for the discs inserted into the oral mucosa of lab rats. While single-doped zirconia with 6 mol % yttria is stable, additions of aluminum or iron led to formation of monoclinic secondary phase in the testing conditions. The lack of major adverse reactions in the surrounding tissues make these materials promising candidates for their use in dental prosthetics.

Ferroelectric capacitors based on aluminium (Al) doped hafnium oxide (HfO2) thin films grown on silicon substrates were fabricated by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), taking into account two methods. The first one involved the growth of a binary oxide, in a laminar way, by alternating the ALD cycles of HfO2 and Al2O3, and the second, the two precursors were sequentially mixed on the surface. The composition and structure of deposited aluminium doped hafnium oxide (Al:HfO2) thin films have been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD). XPS measurements show the formation of opposite ferroelectric polarization areas. Via GIXRD, it was found that the Al:HfO2 films deposited on Si have a structure with polycrystalline domains. Recording and investigation of ferroelectric domains were performed by Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM), while the electrical performances of obtained devices were analysed by capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. The PFM measurements show there is a mechanical non-zero response even outside the written area and for an appropriate value of the electrical stress the difference in phase between successive areas is saturated to a value close to 180°. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses indicate a very low value of roughness average, for all grown thin films, ~0.2 nm, for a thickness of ~7 nm. From C-V characteristics, the memory window was extracted and the calculated values were found to be 0.8 V for the device obtained by the first ALD method, and 0.44 V for the second one, respectively. Moreover, in the case of the device based on the ferroelectric layer grown by the second ALD method, the memory window extends over a much wider applied voltage domain, in the range (±4 V; ±8 V), at a signal of 100 kHz.

Curcumin (CR) is a natural compound with a well-known antioxidant and therapeutic activity. Its stability may be enhanced when incorporated in different matrices as a layered double hydroxides (LDH) matrix. Curcumin intercalated layered double hydroxide nanohybrid is a potential drug delivery system for effective photodynamic therapy in human breast cancer or skin cancer. The synthesis of the hybrid LDH-CR powder implies the dissolution of CR in water or in another organic solvent which is miscible with water. Since the solubility of curcumin in water is very weak, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the solvent employed for its dissolution on the structural and physico-chemical-photoluminescent properties of the resulting hybrid materials. Four powders of curcumin (CR)-containing Mg2.5Al-LDH hybrids (Mg/Al molar ratio of 2.5) were prepared by co-precipitation (P) and reconstruction (R) using two different solvents for the dissolution of curcumin: (i) an alkaline aqueous solution (A), and (ii) ethanol (E). The reconstruction used the calcinated (460 °C for 18 h) form of the parent Mg2.5Al-LDH powder. All the solids were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and FTIR spectroscopy. The FTIR-ATR spectra of the all the powders except the powder prepared via reconstruction in ethanol exhibit LDH characteristics, consistent with the XRD results. Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) was employed for the deposition of hybrid LDH-CR thin films. Aqueous solutions of the as prepared hybrid LDH-CR powders were frozen and used as targets for MAPLE depositions. The films were deposited using a nanosecond laser emitting at 266 nm. MAPLE is considered a “soft” deposition technique suitable to conserve the CR stability. XRD, scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy and fluorescence measurements were used to characterize the deposited films in order to evidence the influence of the preparation methods on the structural and photophysical characteristics of the hybrid LDH-CR films.

Devices developed for the aeronautic or space industries must be able to operate in harsh environments. In order to protect devices such as microstrip antennae, various coatings have to be used. Herein, we present the results of obtaining YSZ/Al2O3 heterostructures by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) for the protection of planar monopole antennas without changing their performances after the deposition process. The theoretical SRIM-TRIM simulation code results on the effects of ionized radiations incident on a YSZ/Al2O3 heterostructure, as well as the physical properties of the YSZ/Al2O3 thin films obtained by the PLD technique are also presented. The SRIM studies show that at the same energy range the proton penetration depth is higher than the alpha penetration depth, giving insights about the penetration depth of proton and alpha particles in the studied targets. Our goal is to obtain a multilayer structure able to enhance the endurance of the antenna and microwave circuitry in harsh space environment without reducing the performances under nominal operation conditions.

In this work, we report on the synthesis and characteristics of composite membranes consisting of polymeric porous supports coated with thin films. Polyethylene terephthalate track etched membranes were used as porous substrates, while chemically-resistant polytetrafluoroethylene-like thin films were obtained by magnetron sputtering deposition. The effects of coating process on topside, backside and inside pores surfaces, leading to changes of morphology and chemical composition at surface were investigated upon the deposition time. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to reveal the morphological characteristics. The chemical composition of the initial support and resulted composite membranes was determined by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, where the chemical groups containing fluorine were used as indicators for plasma species penetration inside pores. Process conditions were identified which lead to membranes with contrast of properties on their sides, or completely coated with Teflon-like material on both sides and inside pores, thus with various wettability and liquid flow properties.

This work is meant to respond the challenge of manufacturing osmium targets for nuclear astrophysics experiments using the activation method with alpha particles. In this context, PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition) was used to prepare osmium targets without specks or wrinkles and with a very well defined and constant thickness. Characterization techniques as RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry), AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and XRD (X-ray Diffraction) were used to determine accurately the features of the obtained targets. The obtained results reveal that the PLD technique is suitable for the preparation of high quality thin/thick osmium targets.

In this paper, we present an e-nose for the detection of volatile compounds based on an array of six surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators coated with five different polymers (i.e. polyepichlorohydrin, polyisobutylene, polyethylenimine, (hydroxypropyl)methyl cellulose, and poly(styrene-co-maleic acid) partial isobutyl/methyl mixed ester, plus an uncoated SAW device used as reference. In particular, matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation was used to deposit thin polymer layers which were subsequently used as donor films in the laser induced forward transfer process to selectively cover each SAW resonators of the array. The SAW e-nose was tested upon exposure to vapors of ethyl acetate, dimethyl methylphosphonate, dichloromethane, dichloropentane, and water. The frequency responses showed, for each of the sensors, a different sensitivity to the selected chemical agents and a good agreement with the theoretical sensitivities derived from the linear-solvation-energy-relationship between vapors and polymers. Specifically, the implemented SAW e-nose allowed the discrimination between all the considered vapors in the tested concentrations ranges as highlighted by the results of principal component analysis. Finally, the obtained results indicated that laser deposition of polymers onto SAW resonators is possible without significant modifications of their functionality and with a good reliability and reproducibility.
