Beam hodoscopes based on 32 × 32 square polystyrene scintillating fibres along X/Y, having section 3 × 3 mm2 or 1 × 1 mm2, have been designed and characterised for monitoring low-energy charged particle beams. Each fibre is read by a SiPM and the signal is digitised and analysed off-line. Hodoscopes were exposed to the 60 MeV/c negative muon beam at Port 1 of the RIKEN-RAL muon facility (UK), where they proved to be good to determine the beam profile and its intensity, via a calibration with cosmic muons. Furthermore, the exposition to the calibrated single-proton beam at CNAO (Italy), in the momentum range between 340 MeV/c and 690 MeV/c, provided further calibration in dE/dx and showed the feasibility of the detector as an instrument for proton beam characterisation too. These hodoscopes will be used as negative muon beam monitors for the FAMU experiment at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, but the possibility of using them as a beam monitor in hadron therapy has also been investigated.

The first measurement of the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen to oxygen was performed by the FAMU collaboration in 2016. The results provide evidence that the transfer rate rises with the temperature in the range 104-300 K. This paper presents the results of the experiment done in 2018 to extend the measurements towards lower (70 K) and higher (336 K) temperatures. The 2018 results confirm the temperature dependence of Λ p O observed in 2016 and sets firm ground for comparison with the theoretical predictions.

The idea of the CHNET-TANDEM experiment is to develop and optimize a non-destructive technique, which allows analysis deep inside the sample with a good spatial resolution, using a negative muon beam. By selecting the primary muon energies appropriately, bulk analysis can be performed without destructing the sample. The experimental setup used for this experiment, made by 2 hodoscopes and 5 HpGe, allowed us to collect very interesting preliminary data concerning scan momentum, positioning and centering of the samples by means of two hodoscopes, analysis of standard material targets and elemental characterization of Nuragic “Bronze Age” votive ship fragments.

Objectives To describe the effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment in patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Design and setting This is a pilot study involving 20 MS patients attending the IRCCS Neurolesi “Bonino-Pulejo”, Messina, Italy. Intervention The clinical evaluation was performed before starting rehabilitation treatment (T0) and after 8 weeks of treatment (T1). The CG sample undergo a conventional rehabilitation training (CRT), 5 times/week for 60 min (for a total of 40 sessions), the EG performed the same CRT (but with a different frequency, i.e. 3 times/week, for a total of 24 sessions) and a specific OMT 2 times/week for 60 min (for a total of 16 sessions). Main outcome measures We analyzed the scores recorded in the following main scales: Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), 10 m walking test (10mWT), Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HRS-A), and the Fatigue severity scale (FSS). Results Our data showed a reduction in the FSS score for the EG (40 ± 1,41 at T0 vs 37 ± 2,32 at T1; p = 0.04) but not in the CG (41 ± 2,41 at TO vs 39 ± 2,6 at T1) with an intergroup difference p Conclusions Our data raise idea that OMT might be useful in rehabilitative setting in MS patients, with particular regard to anxiety and fatigue.

The use of proton and carbon ion beams in cancer therapy (also known as hadron therapy) is progressively growing worldwide due to their improved dose distributions, sparing of healthy tissues and (for carbon ions) increased radiobiological effectiveness especially for radio-resistant tumours. Strict Quality Assurance (QA) protocols need to be followed for guaranteeing the clinical beam specifications. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of a gaseous detector based on the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology for measuring the beam spot dimensions and the homogeneity of the scanned irradiation field, which are daily QA tasks commonly performed using radiochromic films. Measurements performed at the National Centre for Oncological Hadron Therapy (CNAO) in Pavia (Italy) showed that the detector is able to monitor the 2D beam image on-line with a pad granularity of 2 mm and a response proportional to the number of delivered particles. The dose homogeneity was measured with low deviation from the results obtained with radiochromic films.

A nano-microdosimetric tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) capable of measuring microdosimetric spectra of ionizing radiation in the range 500–25 nm was designed, constructed and deeply characterized in order to fill the gap between nanodosimetry and experimental microdosimetry. This work describes the first microdosimetric characterization at nanometric level of a 195.2 MeV/u carbon ion beam available at CNAO (National Centre for Oncological Hadron Therapy). The detector was properly placed at different depths in PMMA phantom across the depth-dose profile of the primary beam for measuring microdosimetric distributions for different simulated site sizes down to 25 nm at different depths. The acquired spectra show that this TEPC is capable of reproducing the beam slowing down, showing a shift towards higher lineal energies as the primary particles slow-down. Moreover, the distributions at different simulated site sizes for the same depth are influenced by secondary electrons: smaller site size spectra exhibit a shift towards higher lineal energies as the site decreases, while this is not the case for more distal positions, where the edge of the spectra is almost independent of the simulated site size. Monte Carlo simulations performed with the FLUKA code show a good agreement with the experimental results obtained in the present paper.

The FOOT experiment aims at identifying the fragments produced in the human body during hadrontherapy and at measuring their cross sections. The apparatus is composed of several detectors which allow a complete reconstruction of the tracks of the fragments. In particular, the Δ E-TOF detector measures the energy released in a thin plastic scintillator and the time of flight of the fragments. In this work, we report the energy and time resolution of a Δ E-TOF detector prototype with proton and carbon irradiations, and we compare the results with a Monte Carlo simulation of the optical transport in the detector. With carbon ions, we measured time resolutions of ∼ 50 ps and energy resolutions of ∼ 6%. The Monte Carlo simulation was able to model the dependence of the number of detected photons on the proton interaction position.

The tau lepton lifetime is measured with the L3 detector at LEP using the complete data taken at centre-of-mass energies around the Z pole resulting in tau_tau = 293.2 +/- 2.0 (stat) +/- 1.5 (syst) fs. The comparison of this result with the muon lifetime supports lepton universality of the weak charged current at the level of six per mille. Assuming lepton universality, the value of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s is found to be alpha_s(m_tau^2) = 0.319 +/- 0.015(exp.) +/- 0.014 (theory). The tau lepton lifetime is measured with the L3 detector at LEP using the complete data taken at centre-of-mass energies around the Z pole resulting in τ τ =293.2 ± 2.0 (stat) ± 1.5 (syst) fs . The comparison of this result with the muon lifetime supports lepton universality of the weak charged current at the level of six per mille. Assuming lepton universality, the value of the strong coupling constant, α s is found to be α s ( m τ 2 ) = 0.319 ± 0.015 (exp) ± 0.014 (theory). L. Pellegri et al. ; 5 pags. ; 6 figs. ; open access article under the CC BY license. Funded by SCOAP3, © 2014 The Authors. The γ decay from the high-lying states of 124Sn was measured using the inelastic scattering of 17O at 340 MeV. The emitted γ rays were detected with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array and the scattered ions were detected in two segmented δE-E silicon telescopes. The angular distribution was measured both for the γ rays and the scattered 17O ions. An accumulation of E1 strength below the particle threshold was found and compared with previous data obtained with (γ, γ') and (α, α'γ) reactions. The present results of elastic scattering, and excitation of E2 and E1 states were analysed using the DWBA approach. From this comprehensive description the isoscalar component of the 1- excited states was extracted. The obtained values are based on the comparison of the data with DWBA calculations including a form factor deduced using a microscopic transition density., Grant No. 2011/03/B/ST2/01894; (iii) the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU; (iv) the US NSF Grant PHY-1204486; and the German BMBF under Grant 06KY9136.

The hadronic part of the electron structure function F-2(e) has been measured for the first time, using e(+)e(-) data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies of root s = 91.2-209.5 GeV. The data analysis is simpler than that of the measurement of the photon structure function. The electron structure function F-2(e) data are compared to predictions of phenomenological models based on the photon structure function. It is shown that the contribution of large target photon virtualities is significant. The data presented can serve as a cross-check of the photon structure function F-2(gamma) analyses and help in refining existing parameterisations. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Isotopic effects in projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies have been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z ratio of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Consequences for the proposed interpretation of chemical breakup temperatures as representing the limiting temperatures predicted by microscopic models are discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, contribution to proceedings of International School of Nuclear Physics, 30th Course, Heavy-Ion Collisions from the Coulomb Barrier to the Quark-Gluon Plasma, Erice-Sicily: 16 - 24 September 2008

The stopping power Δ E and the energy-loss resolution δ E / Δ E of Single-Crystal CVD-Diamond Detectors (SC-DDs) measured with relativistic Heavy Ions (HIs) are interpreted as global quality parameters, characterizing simultaneously crystal texture and carrier-trapping concentrations, as well as the charge-transport properties of intrinsic diamond samples. HI spectra are presented, where spectral lines are obtained similar to the predictions of the Lindhard and Sorensen (LS) theory [J. Lindhard, A.H. Sorensen, Phys. Rev. A 53 (1996) 2443]. The spectroscopic results indicate an almost defect free material, and spatial homogeneity of all parameters relevant to the detector signal (i.e., mass density, dielectric constant, drift mobility and velocity of the charge carriers). Measured and simulated transient current signals generated by relativistic 132 Xe ions are discussed according to theories [A. Many, G. Rakavy, Phys. Rev., 126 (1962) 1980; G. Juska, M. Viliunas, O. Klima, E. Sipek, J. Kocka, Phil. Mag. B 69 (1994) 277; G. Juska, M. Viliunas, K. Arlauskas, J. Kocka, Phys. Rev. B 51 (1994) 16 668] of space-charge limited current (SCLC) transients. The evidence of the spectroscopic results is confirmed by the current-mode studies, and thus indirectly, the potential of the characterization method as well.
