Introduction The assessment of the risk of virus transmission through papers, such as postcards, is important. However, the stability of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A virus (IAV) on different types of papers is currently unknown. Investigation of the survival time of these viruses on different types of papers will provide insights into their risk of long-distance transport by postal items. Methods We evaluated the stability of SARS-CoV-2 and IAV, mixed with a culture medium, on the surface of postcards with various coatings, including plain paper (PP), inkjet paper (IP), and inkjet photo paper (IPP). The surface structure of each paper was microscopically assessed. Results The surface structures of PP, IP, and IPP varied greatly depending on the presence or absence, and type, of coat layer, regardless of the base material. IP and IPP surfaces were less conducive to virus survival than PP surfaces, because of the difference in surface shapes. The survival times of SARS-CoV-2 on each paper were approximately 59.8 (PP), 6.5 (IP), and 9.8 h (IPP), and significantly longer than those of IAV (10.3, 1.8, and 3.3 h, respectively). Conclusions The risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission via paper, such as postcards, is significantly higher than that of IAV transmission. While PP, IP, and IPP have the same base material, their surface structures differ, which affects viral stability. The IP and IPP surfaces are less suitable for virus survival. This study provides novel insights into the risks of viral transmission via paper.

Background: Patient-reported outcomes (PROS) are widely accepted measures for evaluating outcomes of surgical interventions. As patient-reported information is stored in electronic health records, it is essential that there are valid electronic PRO (ePRO) instruments available for clinicians and researchers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of electronic versions of five widely used foot and ankle specific PRO instruments. Methods: Altogether 111 consecutive elective foot/ankle surgery patients were invited face-to-face to participate in this study. Patients completed electronic versions of the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), the modified Lower Extremity Function Scale (LEFS), the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ), and the Visual Analogue Scale Foot and Ankle (VAS-FA) on the day of elective foot and/or ankle surgery. Construct validity, coverage, and targeting of the scales were assessed. Results: Based on general and predefined thresholds, construct validity, coverage, and targeting of the ePRO versions of the FAAM, the FAOS, the MOXFQ, and the VAS-FA were acceptable. Major issues arose with score distribution and convergent validity of the modified LEFS instrument. Conclusions: The ePRO versions of the FAAM, the FAOS, the MOXFQ and the VAS-FA provide valid scores for foot and ankle patients. However, our findings do not support the use of the modified LEFS as an electronic outcome measure for patients with orthopedic foot and/or ankle pathologies. There is growing demand for simple to operate, sensitive, on-site quantitative assays to investigate concentrations of drug molecules in pharmaceutical preparations for quality assurance. Here, we report on the development of two colorimetric analysis methods for the study the antibiotic doxycycline hyclate (DOX) and the nasal decongestant oxymetazoline hydrochloride (OXY), in solution as well as in their respective formulations. We compare a UV/vis spectrophotometry method with a color change recorded on a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD). Detection is based on the pharmaceutical compounds coupling with diazotized 4-aminoacetophenone (DAAP) under alkaline conditions to produce colored azo-dye products. These azo-compounds were monitored by absorbance at 425 nm for DOX and 521 nm for OXY, with linear calibration graphs in the concentration range of 0.5–35 mg L−1 (DOX) and 1.0–40 mg L−1 (OXY) and limits of detection of 0.24 mg L−1 (DOX) and 0.32 mg L−1 (OXY). For the μPAD method, color intensity was measured from photographs and a linear increase was observed at concentrations from above approximately 15 mg L−1 for both compounds and up to 35 mg L−1 for DOX and 40 mg L−1 for OXY. The developed methods were also applied to the formulated pharmaceuticals and no interference was found from the excipient. Thus, the paper-based device provides an inexpensive, simple alternative approach for use outside centralized laboratories with semi-quantitative capability.

Xenoestrogens exert antiandrogenic effects on the human androgen receptor. In the analytical field, such antagonists block the detection of testosterone and falsify results obtained by sum parameter assays. Currently, such agonistic versus antagonistic effects are not differentiated in complex mixtures. Oppositely acting hormonal effects present in products of everyday use can only be differentiated after tedious fractionation and isolation of the individual compounds along with subjection of each fraction/compound to the status quo bioassay testing. However, such long-lasting procedures are not suited for routine. Hence, we developed a fast bioanalytical tool that figures out agonists versus antagonists directly in complex mixtures. Exemplarily, 8 cosmetics and 15 thermal papers were analyzed. The determined antagonistic potentials of active compounds found were comparable to the ones of known antagonists (in reference shown for bisphenol A, 4-n-nonylphenol and four parabens). Relevant biological/chromatographic parameters such as cell viability, culture conditions, dose response curves, limits of biological detection/quantification and working range (shown for testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, nandrolone and trenbolone) were investigated to obtain the best sensitivity of the biological detection. The developed and validated method was newly termed reversed phase high-performance thin-layer chromatography planar yeast ant-/agonistic androgen screen (RP-HPTLC-pYAAS bioassay). Results were also compared with the RP-HPTLC-Aliivibrio fischeri bioassay (applied on RP plates for the first time). As proof-of-concept, the transfer to another bioassay (RP-HPTLC-pYES) was successfully demonstrated, analogously termed RP-HPTLC-pYAES bioassay detecting anti-/estrogens (exemplarily shown for evaluation of 4 pharmaceuticals used in breast cancer treatment). The new imaging concept provides (1) detection and differentiation of individual agonistic versus antagonistic effects in the bioprofiles, (2) bioanalytical quantification of their activity potential by scanning densitometry and (3) characterization of unknown bioactive compound zones by hyphenation to high-resolution mass spectrometry. Depending on the hormonal bioassay, 15 samples were analyzed in parallel within 5 h or 6 h (calculated as 20 or 24 min per sample). For the first time, piezoelectric spraying of the yeast cells was successfully demonstrated for the planar yeast–based bioassays.

Polygalacturonase (PG) activity in plants can serve as an important index for plant disease. However, the conventional method to detect PG activity is a complex process and requires a skilled technician and expensive analytical equipment. In this study, a paper-based colorimetric sensor was developed based on the principle of the ruthenium red (RR) dye method for easy and simple measurement of PG activity. The proposed paper-based sensor has a three-layer structure for detection of PG activity in samples. The sensor sensitivity was enhanced by optimizing the pH of the sodium acetate buffer used in polygalacturonic acid (PGA)-RR complex formation and the reaction temperature for PG and the PGA-RR complex. Further, for quantitative analysis of PG activity, Delta RGB analysis was conducted to detect color changes in the sensing window of the sensor. Results presented that the linear measurement range of the paper sensor was 0.02-0.1 unit with the limit of detection of 0.02 unit, which showed a similar detection range, but a lower detection limit, compared to the spectrophotometry. Furthermore, PG activity based on culture condition was measured using samples from Sclerotium cepivorum to verify the potential application of the developed paper-based sensor in the field. The measured activity showed no statistically significant difference from the values obtained from the spectrophotometry at 95% confidence level. Therefore, the paper-based colorimetric sensor can be used to predict plant diseases in Allium crops during the stage of pathogen invasion, potentially contributing to the improvement of crop production.

A novel all-in-one paper-based sampling concept for mass spectrometric bottom-up protein analysis is here demonstrated in a chip format integrating instant immunocapture, protein reduction, - alkylation and tryptic digestion all in-device. Conventional laboratory grade filter paper was coated with the polymer 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-2-vinyl-4,4-dimethyl azlactone (pHEMA-VDM) with a subsequent covalent immobilization of the monoclonal antibody E27 targeting the biomarker human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). In-device protein reduction and alkylation was optimized with regards to reagent concentration and reaction pH. The sampling concept showed a high degree of performance between 10 and 1000 ng/mL (R2 > 0.99) by a five-point calibration curve sampled with hCG spiked to human serum samples and freshly collected whole blood samples, respectively. LOD (experimentally obtained at 100 pg/mL (2.64 pM/0.9 IU/L)) was demonstrated to be up to ten times lower with more than six times faster sample preparation than what has previously been reported for on-paper analysis of hCG in human serum samples.

The current work describes the development of a "nanopaper-based analytical device (NAD)", through the embedding of curcumin in transparent bacterial cellulose (BC) nanopaper, as a colorimetric assay kit for monitoring of iron and deferoxamine (DFO) as iron-chelating drug in biological fluids such as serum blood, urine and saliva. The iron sensing strategy using the developed assay kit is based on the decrease of the absorbance/color intensity of curcumin-embedded in BC nanopaper (CEBC) in the presence of Fe(III), due to the formation of Fe(III)-curcumin complex. On the other hand, releasing of Fe(III) from Fe(III)-CEBC upon addition of DFO as an iron-chelating drug, due to the high affinity of this drug to Fe(III) in competition with curcumin, which leads to recovery of the decreased absorption/color intensity of Fe(III)-CEBC, is utilized for selective colorimetric monitoring of this drug. The absorption/color changes of the fabricated assay kit as output signal can be monitored by smartphone camera or by using a spectrophotometer. The results of our developed sensor agreed well with the results from a clinical reference method for determination of Fe(III) concentration in human serum blood samples, which revealed the clinical applicability of our developed assay kit. Taken together, regarding the advantageous features of the developed sensor as an easy-to-use, non-toxic, disposable, cost-effective and portable assay kit, along with those of smartphone-based sensing, it is anticipated that this sensing bioplatform, which we name lab-on-nanopaper, will find utility for sensitive, selective and easy diagnosis of iron-related diseases (iron deficiency and iron overload) and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of iron-chelating drugs in clinical analysis as well.

The adulteration of herbal medicines by dexamethasone or prednisolone is regarded as a serious problem in many communities. Herein, a novel platform for the separation and quantification of both target steroids in herbal medicines based on electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) has been created. The ePAD was composed of Whatman SG81 chromatography paper, 3D-printed devices and a commercial screen-printed electrode. Whatman SG81 silica-coated paper was used for the separation of dexamethasone and prednisolone based on the difference in their partition coefficients during the flow of the mobile phase. The optimal mobile phase was composed of 60% ethyl acetate in cyclohexane and required 7 min for separation. The separated steroids on the paper were then quantified by electrochemical detection using differential pulse voltammetry, in which the 3D-printed devices facilitated the measurement. Analytical detection ranges of 10–500 μg mL−1 were obtained for both dexamethasone and prednisolone (r2 = 0.988 and 0.994, respectively). The limits of detection for dexamethasone and prednisolone were 3.59 and 11.98 μg mL−1, respectively, whereas the limits of quantification were 6.00 and 20.02 μg mL−1, respectively. The amounts of both target steroids derived from real herbal medicine samples determined by the proposed method were comparable to those obtained with assays using standard high-performance liquid chromatography. In addition, a simple evaporation step can be used to increase the concentration of the samples before analysis. These ePADs are simple, low-cost, rapid, and very promising for on-site quantitative detection.

Chloride (Cl-) is an inorganic anion present in a broad range of samples (e.g. biological, environmental, food, water, etc.), the determination of which is of widespread significance. In this work, we translate the well-established traditional argentometric method (Mohr's precipitation titration) into a small, simple, portable, and low-cost paper-based microfluidic diagnostic device, which provides rapid and quantitative analysis. The developed device enables the determination of chloride sample volumes as small as 5 μL. A distance-based detection method is implemented providing fully instrument-free quantitation. The beneficial effects of channel geometry (variable widths with constant heights) on analytical parameters were investigated. Trapezoidal channels (channel width changes linearly with height) were used to create a gradient of paper surface (titrant) available for the reaction, compared to the typical uniform rectangular channels (constant channel width). The trapezoid with increasing width offered higher sensitivity and lower detection limits (i.e. 0.05 mM vs 0.1 mM from the rectangular channel) for chloride determination across the concentration range of 0.05-25 mM. In addition, the effect of concentration of the deposited reagent on the obtained distance signals was investigated using varying concentrations of titrant (AgNO3), which allowed determination of chloride across a wider dynamic range (up to 200 mM). The utility of the paper devices was demonstrated by determination of chloride in a variety of matrices including body fluids (sweat, serum, and urine) and water samples (drinking, mineral, river water).

A paper-based electrochemical immunosensor was developed for the detection of cancer antigen 125 (CA125) by screen-printing technique. The reduced graphene oxide/thionine/gold nanoparticles (rGO/Thi/AuNPs) nanocomposites were compounded and coated onto the working electrode of immunosensor for CA125 antibody (anti-CA125) immobilization and detection signal amplification. The detection principle was based on the fact that the immunocomplex formed by specify binding of CA125 antibody and antigen could reduce the current response of thionine, which was proportional to the corresponding concentration of CA125 antigen. The immunoassay results showed that the linear range of CA125 was from 0.1 U mL-1 to 200 U mL-1 with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 U mL-1 at signal to noise of 3. Quality control serum samples measured by our proposed immunosensor showed acceptable agreement with traditional ELISA method with the relative error less than 8.05%. The immunosensor exhibited good electrochemical performance with high reproducibility, reliability, stability and accuracy. The proposed immunosensor could be used for the determination of CA125 and had the potential for point-of-care testing (POCT) of other tumor marker.

The aim of this study was to assess postures and movements of the trunk and upper arm during paper mill work, and to determine the extent to which they differ depending on method of assessment. For each of 28 paper mill workers, postures and movements were assessed during three full shifts using inclinometer registration and observation from video. Summary metrics for each shift, e.g., 10th, 50th, and 90th posture percentile, were averaged across shifts and across workers. In addition, the standard deviation between workers, and the standard deviation between shifts within worker were computed. The results showed that trunk and arm postures during paper mill work were similar to other occupations involving manual materials handling, but the velocities of arm movements were lower. While postures determined by inclinometry and observation were similar on a group level, substantial differences were found between results obtained by the two methods for individual workers, particularly for extreme postures. Thus, measurements by either method on individuals or small groups should be interpreted with caution.

Norfloxacin (NOR) in milk may influence mammalian cell replication and bring about a decrease in the efficiency for treating infection in humans. However, current techniques for detecting NOR usually require expensive instruments and trained personnel. In this work, we have developed a low-cost and simple method via paper-based fluorescent immunoassay for highly sensitive and selective detection of NOR in milk at picogram level. The NOR monoclonal antibody labeled with quantum dots is used as a detection probe to recognize the corresponding NOR, which can quantitatively detect NOR on paper-based devices. The detection limits in aqueous solution and milk are 1 pg/mL and 10 pg/mL, respectively. The developed paper-based method provides a cheap, sensitive, eco-friendly, and rapid approach for quantitative detection of trace NOR in milk, which may find wide applications in food safety inspection. Noteworthy, the method is especially suitable for applications at resource-limited and on-site settings.

We report the colorimetric detection of dopamine (DA) on microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) using an oxidation-reduction method. Here, dopamine reacts with ferric chloride forming reduced Fe2+ that subsequently reacts with phenanthroline to form the red tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) complex. The devices were fabricated by wax printing and changes in color intensity were recorded using a common cell phone. Subsequent analysis using Photoshop software, yielded a limit of detection (LOD) for DA of 0.37 μmol/L with a linear range of 0.527–4.75 μmol/L and relative standard deviation of 0.11% (inter-day) and 0.15% (intra-day) for n = 15 paper chips. The effects of detection conditions have been investigated and are discussed. Cow serum samples and human blood serum and plasma samples were detected. The work, herein, demonstrates the potential of this method as a low cost and rapid colorimetric technique to detect DA in real samples.

Flexible sensing devices have drawn tremendous attention in the past decades due to their potential applications in future hand-held, potable consumer, and wearable electronics. Here, we firstly developed an ultrasensitive wireless potentiometric aptasensor based on flexible freestanding graphene paper for kanamycin detection. Flexible graphene paper made from a simple vacuum filtration method was used as a biocompatible platform for effective immobilization of aptamer. A nuclease-assisted amplification strategy was introduced into this potentiometric biosensing system in order to significantly improve the detection sensitivity through a classic catalytic recycling reaction of target induced by the nuclease (DNase I). As expected, an ultra-low detection limit of 30.0 fg/mL for kanamycin was achieved. Furthermore, the developed potentiometric enzymatic aptasensor exhibits high selectivity, favorable flexibility, excellent stability and reproducibility, which holds great promising for its routine sensing application.

In recent years, increasing efforts have focused on production of organic-inorganic compound fertilizers using ammonium sulfite pulping waste liquor. However, their ecological effects on soil have not been studied. In this study, earthworm Eisenia fetida was exposed to various doses (0, 0.13, 0.26 and 0.52 kg/m2) for different time (7, 14, 21, and 28 d) to evaluate the effects of fertilizers made from pulping waste liquor, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, antioxidant enzymes activities, glutathione S-transferase enzyme (GST) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and DNA damage. Results showed that there were significant increase of ROS and MDA levels after 14 d, inducing production of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT)) as well as GST. Before 14 d, excess ROS and MDA caused damage to the DNA of earthworms, leading to gradual increase of Olive tail moment (OTM) in the comet assay. With the exposure time extended to 28 d, owing to the combined effects of elimination of free radicals by antioxidant enzymes and detoxification enzymes as well as self-repairing function of cells, ROS and MDA levels declined slightly and OTM gradually decreased. In summary, this study indicated that there was a toxicological effect on earthworms when fertilizers made from pulping waste liquor were applied to soil, which needs more attention.

In this study, a slug-flow microextraction (SFME) coupled with paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) method was developed for rapid and on-site analysis of trace amphetamine-type illicit drugs including amphetamine (AM), methamphetamine (MA) and 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA) in complex biological samples such as whole blood and raw urine. The method involved the application of SFME for rapid extraction of trace amphetamine-type illicit drugs from whole blood and raw urine samples, followed by PS for direct MS analysis under ambient and open-air conditions. The experimental parameters including extraction solvent, extraction cycle, high voltage, and spray solvent, etc., were all investigated, and the optimized conditions showed an enhanced sensitivity of 1–2 order of magnitudes compared with PS-MS. The method showed good linearity, with correlation coefficient values (r) of no less than 0.9979 for analysis of AM, MA, and MDMA in human whole blood and raw urine without additional sample pretreatments. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.01–0.05 ng/mL and 0.05–0.2 ng/mL, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries were also obtained, with 74.2–94.9% for whole blood and 80.2–103.6% for raw urine, respectively. All of our experimental results demonstrated that SFME-PS-MS showed great potential for rapid, on-site, in situ, and high-throughput screening of amphetamine-type illicit drugs in various biological samples.

Food-borne infections are major causes of public health concern in developing and developed countries. During the past decade, the Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée Infection has conducted or been involved in multiple investigations that aimed at identifying the sources and strains responsible for food-borne diseases and therefore at improving the understanding, diagnosis, prevention and control of these infections. Investigations were conducted in the Mediterranean area and in sub-Saharan Africa on more than 15 food-borne agents, 17 food products and 14 antibiotic resistance-associated genes. Multiple sources, including unexpected ones, and pathogens, including emerging ones, were involved. Travelling in developing countries and zoonoses are major contributors to food-borne infections, while food-borne transmission of resistance-associated genes is increasingly reported. However, risk factors and pathogens associated with food-borne infections likely remain untapped and must be more extensively investigated, monitored and regularly reassessed. Diagnostic tests based on new technologies and real-time surveillance tools based on microbiology laboratory data are promising approaches to detect known food-borne infections and decipher new ones. Studies of the microbiota and its relationships with dietary patterns are also worth being conducted. Using waste paper as fuel for domestic heating is a beneficial recycling option for small island developing states where there are lacks of resources for energy and waste treatment. However, there are concerns about the impact of air pollutants emitted from the burning of the self-made paper briquettes as household air pollution is recognised as the greatest environmental risk for human. In this study, combustion tests were carried out for paper briquettes made in one Pacific island and three commercial fuels in Australia including wood briquettes, kindling firewood and coal briquettes in order to: 1) characterise the emissions of three criteria air pollutants including particulate matters, CO and NOx including their emission factors (EF) from the tested fuels; and 2) compare the EFs among the tested fuels and with others reported in the literature. The results showed that waste paper briquettes burned quickly and generated high temperature but the heat value is relatively low. Paper briquettes and coal briquettes produced higher CO concentration than the others while paper briquettes generated the highest NOx level. Only PM2.5 concentration emitted from paper briquettes was similar to kindling firewood and lower than wood briquettes. Burning of paper briquettes and wood briquettes produced particulate matter with large average count median diameter (72 and 68 nm) than coal briquette and kindling firewood (45 and 51 nm). The EFs for CO, NOx and PM2.5 of paper briquettes were within the range of EFs reported in this study as well as in the literature. Overall, the results suggested that using paper briquettes as fuel for domestic heating will not likely to generate higher level of three major air pollutants compared to other traditional fuels.

The genetic and morphologic similarities between primates and humans means that much information obtained from primates may be applied to humans, and vice versa. However, habitat loss, hunting and the continued presence of humans have a negative effect on the biology and behaviour of almost all nonhuman primates. Noninvasive methods such as stool collection are among the safest alternative ways to study the multiple aspects of the biology of primates. Many epidemiologic issues (e.g. pathogen detection, microbiota studies) may be easily studied using stool samples from primates. Primates are undoubtedly among the first candidates suspected of becoming the source of one of the next emerging epidemic of zoonotic origin, as has already been observed with HIV, malaria and monkeypox. The Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée Infection in Marseille actively participates in the study, mostly epidemiologic, of nonhuman primates, using mostly stool samples. Treatment for cancer depends on the type of cancer, and the stage or its development, and thus the need for point-of-care technology that can allow rapid and precise detection of biomarkers is increasing. Here, we present a simple on chip electrical detection of Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). We rely on using a novel peptide modified plastic-paper microfluidic chips to perform efficient and specific impedimetric detection of AFP in human serum. The chips are prepared from a lower sheet of plastic and upper layer of cellulose chromatography paper modified with silver-20 wt% graphene printed electrodes. Diphenylalanine (FF) was proposed to involve in detection zone of the fabricated microchips in order to improve the sensing performance and the stability of immobilized antibodies according to amine-aldehyde reaction. The target protein is captured on the surface of microchips using specific monoclonal antibodies and the electrical response of the chip is monitored in the presence and absence of different concentrations of AFP. The influence of several parameters including the material types for screen printing of electrodes, FF concentrations, solvent and pH of FF solution on electrical response and cellulose fibers morphology was explored. The impedance measurements of AFP on the fabricated microchip in the optimized parameters exhibited a detection limit of 1 and 10 ng ml-1 in PBS and plasma, respectively. This platform developed here can be adopted to develop systems for rapid detection of biomarkers using portable electric devices.

A functional biopolymer-coated paper was prepared by coating a ternary blend of the alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and carrageenan with grapefruit seed extract (GSE) for the substitute use of synthetic polymer-coated paper. The microstructure of the surface and cross-section of the coated paper analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) indicated that the biopolymer was compatible with the base paper and filled the pores of the porous fiber to make a smooth-surfaced coating paper. The properties of the biopolymer-coated paper, such as water and oil resistance, water vapor barrier, surface hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties, increased significantly compared with not only the base paper but also commercially used PE-coated paper. The blended biopolymer coating material exhibited strong antibacterial activity against food-borne pathogenic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli, which were destroyed completely within 3 and 9 h, respectively. The packaging test for a minced fish cake packed with the biopolymer-coated paper showed the complete destruction of surface inoculated bacteria in 6–9 days. The biopolymer-coated paper showed a high potential for disposable food packaging applications to increase the shelf-life of packaged food.

The possibility to compress ordinary paper into tablets was systematically investigated in this study. Results proved that tablets can be made from paper, independent of the type of paper used. The tablets appear shiny and with a smooth surface. The pharmaceutical quality was acceptable, i.e. all tablets fulfilled the requirements for tablets according to the European Pharmacopeia. Drug-loaded tablets were produced by compression of drug-loaded paper. Drug loading did not alter the pharmaceutical quality. However, the uncoated tablets possessed an extremely fast disintegration, i.e. intense swelling upon contact with water, which might hamper the swallowing after oral administration. To avoid swelling tablets were successfully coated with a polymer film, leading to a prevention of swelling but immediate disintegration in simulated gastric fluid. In fact, tablets made from paper are a novel and promising strategy for improved oral drug delivery. They can be easily produced without any further excipients and possess pharmaceutical quality according to the European Pharmacopeia.

The use of paper-based methods for clinical diagnostics is a rapidly expanding research topic attracting a great deal of interest. Some groups have attempted to realize an integrated nucleic acid test on a single microfluidic paper chip, including extraction, amplification, and readout functions. However, these studies were not able to overcome complex modification and fabrication requirements, long turn-around times, or the need for sophisticated equipment like pumps, thermal cyclers, or centrifuges. Here, we report an extremely simple paper-based test for the point-of-care diagnosis of rotavirus A, one of the most common pathogens that causes pediatric gastroenteritis. This paper-based test could perform nucleic acid extraction within 5 min, then took 25 min to amplify the target sequence, and the result was visible to the naked eye immediately afterward or quantitative by the UV–Vis absorbance. This low-cost method does not require extra equipment and is easy to use either in a lab or at the point-of-care. The detection limit for rotavirus A was found to be 1 × 103 copies/mL. In addition, 100% sensitivity and specificity were achieved when testing 48 clinical stool samples. In conclusion, the present paper-based test fulfills the main requirements for a point-of-care diagnostic tool, and has the potential to be applied to disease prevention, control, and precision diagnosis.

A novel QD-based immunoassay on a paper-based lateral flow system has been developed to quantitatively detect C-reactive protein (CRP). Different standard CRP antigens from 1 to 200 μg mL−1 were diluted 200-fold and only 60 μL diluted sample were needed to load onto the sample pad. The QD fluorescence signals on the test line and the control line were able to be observed within 3 min after the initiation of assay, and the limit of detection was as sensitive as 0.30 ng mL−1 by measuring the fluorescence intensity immediately afterwards with fluorescence immunoassay analyzer. The linearity on the detection of QD fluorescence signals has been established well in the range of 0.5 ng mL−1 and 1 μg mL−1 for CRP. The precision of the assay has been confirmed for low coefficient of variation (CV), satisfying less than 15% (intra-assay and inter-assay), and the accuracy of assay meets the requirements with the mean recovery of the control was 102.63%. These results indicated that such newly developed platform was reliable with high sensitivity, rapidness, and could cover a broad range of target concentrations. Furthermore, a total of 135 human serum clinical samples with inflammation or infection with the concentration of CRP from 0.2 to 200 μg mL−1 has been used to check the performance of this QD-based LFIA, it correlated very well with Roche Tina-quant CRP (Latex) (r = 0.966, n = 135).

This paper describes a novel rotational paper-based analytical device (RPAD) to implement multi-step electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassays. The integrated paper-based rotational valves can be easily controlled by rotating paper discs manually and this advantage makes it user-friendly to untrained users to carry out the multi-step assays. In addition, the rotational valves are reusable and the response time can be shortened to several seconds, which promotes the rotational paper-based device to have great advantages in multi-step operations. Under the control of rotational valves, multi-step ECL immunoassays were conducted on the rotational device for the multiplexed detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and prostate specific antigen (PSA). The rotational device exhibited excellent analytical performance for CEA and PSA, and they could be detected in the linear ranges of 0.1–100 ng mL−1 and 0.1–50 ng mL−1 with detection limits down to 0.07 ng mL−1 and 0.03 ng mL−1, respectively, which were within the ranges of clinical concentrations. We hope this technique will open a new avenue for the fabrication of paper-based valves and provide potential application in clinical diagnostics.

While many studies have shown that pulp mill effluents can affect ovarian physiology in fish, far fewer studies have considered the effects in males. We conducted a lab study to examine the effects of effluent from a Brazilian pulp and paper mill on hepatic and testicular morphology and various aspects of testicular physiology in the zebrafish Danio rerio. Males were exposed to lab water (control) or 4% effluent for 14 days. Effluent exposure did not affect testis size as measured by the gonadosomatic index, but contributed to morphological changes in the seminiferous tubules. The number of cysts with histopathological changes was elevated in effluent-exposed fish and the number of cysts containing spermatids was significantly reduced. The testis of effluent exposed fish had reduced levels of lactate, elevated lactate dehydrogenase activity, increased levels of reactive oxygen species and reduced levels of phosphorylated P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (pP38 MAPK). Separate studies showed that the addition of lactate to testicular tissue incubated in vitro increased the activation of P38 MAPK. Effluent exposure also increased vacuolization, necrosis, apoptosis, hyperemia, and fat infiltration of the hepatocytes. Collectively, we provide evidence of short term effects of pulp mill effluent on testicular and hepatic physiology and biochemistry in the zebrafish.

In this study, a paper-based microfluidic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed as a screening system for rapid detection of clenbuterol, which is illegally used as a growth promoter for food-producing animals. The microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was combined with ELISA and the intrinsic properties of paper allowed the entrapment of antibody through cellulosic fibres, validating to be an alternative to 96-well ELISA microplate for food safety monitoring. Detection of clenbuterol in milk was achieved by measuring the intensity of colour change that was proportional to the analyte concentration with a detection limit of 0.2 ppb. A great body of evidence unveiled the existence of different stem cell types in various tissues with efficient capability for self-renewal and differentiation. Characterization and enumeration of a specific stem cell population seem difficult because these cells consist of a small percentage of cells within different milieu. As such, due to lack of accuracy provided by convenient methods, biosensing techniques are at the center of attention to improve stem cells characterization with high rate of sensitivity and specificity. In line with this statement, bio-sensing, as a sensitive analytical method, opens novel avenues in biological aspects. Physicochemical signals produced by the interaction of analyte-ligands could be applicable for a wide range of scientific fields such as chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical and immunological purposes. Noninvasive and label free monitoring methods without need to stain, fix, lyse, or fluorescent-tags are desirable in basic stem cell technology and therapeutic applications of cells. We, here, highlighted basic concepts and terms associated with label free biosensor technology for measuring cell entity, evaluating cell surface marker, and peculiarly in the field of stem cell biology. Furthermore, different aspects and methodologies concerning with bio-sensing techniques, including photonic-based detection systems like Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) assays, Impedance-based method, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) and paper based detection of lateral flow biosensor (LFB) were discussed.

Escherichia coli O157: H7 (E. coli O157: H7) has become one of the most dangerous foodborne pathogenic bacteria around the world. Currently, because of the tedious, high-cost and stringent laboratory conditions required, the conventional E. coli O157: H7 detection methods, such as culture-based methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), have much limitation. Thus, we developed a novel paper-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (p-ELISA) with shorter operation duration, lower cost, relatively higher sensitivity and wider application. This method required less than 3 h and 5 μL of sample to complete the detection. The limit of detection (LOD) for E. coli O157: H7 reached 1 × 104 CFU/mL with high specificity. To be more suitable for on-site testing, the readout could be rapidly obtained without any expensive instruments. In this study, we chose E. coli O157:H7 as the representative, and our method could provide a platform for determination of other pathogenic bacteria.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health care burden associated with significant morbidity and serious impact on the quality of life. Estimating blood glucose levels is the currently employed method for screening for DM. Due to the invasive nature of access to blood glucose; new methods are being suggested that depend upon different targets than blood or another biochemical pathway altogether. But these are not cost effective and have inherent limitations related to public screening. We hypothesize a simple, non invasive and cheap paper strip method to estimate tear film glucose levels for screening purposes at community level. We also discuss the ideal properties of such a paper strip and the process of validation the technique should undergo before being employed for mass usage.

We present results of the studies relating to fabrication of a microfluidic biosensor chip based on urchin like Ag@ Pd shell nano-hybrids that is capable of sensing alprazolam through electrochemical detection. Using this chip we demonstrate, with high reliability and in a time efficient manner, the detection of alprazolam present in buffer solutions at clinically relevant concentrations. Methylene blue (MB) was also doped as redox transition substance for sensing alprazolam. Nano-hybrids modified EμPAD showed wide linear range 1-300ng/ml and low detection limit of 0.025ng/l. Low detection limit can further enhance its suitability for forensic application. Nano-hybrids modified EμPAD was also employed for determination of drug in real samples such as human urine. Reported facile lab paper approach integrated with urchin like Ag@ Pd shell nano-hybrids could be well applied for the determination of serum metabolites.

To increase milk production, antibiotics are administered to animals to provide weight gain and to prevent or treat diseases. The inappropriate use of these substances can lead to antibiotic resistance and allergic reactions and toxic effects to milk consumers. We describe the development of a simple, fast, portable, and low-cost microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) to quantify sulfonamides in milk using the inhibition of the colorimetric reaction between carbonic anhydrase (CA) and 4-nitrophenyl acetate. The main advantages presented by the μPAD include reproducible batch production, simple application, and precise analysis without previous treatment. The µPAD displayed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.986) in a wide range of sulfonamides in milk (2.5 to 40.0 µmol L−1), being selective for the drugs even in a highly complex matrix. We expect that this device allows in situ monitoring of milk quality, reducing the prejudicial conditions associated with high concentrations of sulfonamides in milk.

A low-cost and portable paper-based analytical device has been developed for high throughput and on-site monitoring TC residue in milk through visualized colorimetric reaction. The filtration and concentration effect induced by the porous nature of paper contribute to strengthen the color intensity, leading to quantitative and sensitive detection of tetracycline reaching 1 ppm detection limit, with the linear range of 1–100 ppm both in water and milk samples. The applicability was demonstrated by detection of TC in 18 different types of real milk samples with good recovery ranging from 88% to 113%. Furthermore, the dynamic degradation behavior of tetracycline was monitored through the device. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of colorimetric detection of tetracycline in milk using the paper-based device. This simple, fast, cost-effective (~$0.50 per device) and equipment-free paper-based platform provides a promising tool for future application in food and environmental safety.

Accurate, rapid, and low-cost molecular diagnostics is essential in managing outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as the pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Accordingly, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have emerged as promising diagnostic tools. Among the extensive efforts to improve the performance and usability of μPADs, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) based sensing mechanisms have shown great promise, because of their high sensitivity and label-free operations. However, the method to improve EIS biosensing on μPADs is less explored. Here, we present an experimental approach to enhancing the biosensing performance of paper-based EIS nanobiosensors with working electrodes (WEs) decorated with vertically grown zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs). Through a comparison among different EIS settings and an examination of ZnO-WE effects on EIS measurements, we show that Faradaic processes with Fe-based electron mediators are more reliable for ZnO-NW-enhanced working electrodes. We calibrate sensors featuring varied morphologies of ZnO NWs and achieve a low limit of detection (0.4 pg ml−1) for detecting p24 antigen as a marker for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Through theoretical analysis, imaging, and electrochemical characterizations, we reveal that the total surface area and electrochemical surface area indicate the sensitivity and sensing range of the EIS nanobiosensors. Finally, we demonstrate that the nanobiosensors are capable of differentiating the concentrations (blank, 10 ng ml−1, 100 ng ml−1, and 1 μg ml−1) of IgG antibody (CR3022) to SARS-CoV-2 in human serum samples, thus confirming the feasibility of applying the devices to COVID-19 diagnosis. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) represents a growing and global concern for public health that needs inexpensive and convenient methods to collect mosquitoes as potential carriers so that they can be preserved, stored and transported for later and/or remote analysis. Reported here is a cellulose-based paper, derivatized with quaternary ammonium groups (“Q-paper”) that meets these needs. In a series of tests, infected mosquito bodies were squashed directly on to Q-paper. Aqueous ammonia was then added on the mosquito bodies to release viral RNA that adsorbed on the cationic surface via electrostatic interactions. The samples were then stored (frozen) or transported. For analysis, the CHIKV nucleic acids were eluted from the Q-paper and PCR amplified in a workflow, previously developed, that also exploited two nucleic acid innovations, (“artificially expanded genetic information systems”, AEGIS, and “self-avoiding molecular recognition systems”, SAMRS). The amplicons were then analyzed by a Luminex hybridization assay. This procedure detected CHIKV RNA, if present, in each infected mosquito sample, but not in non-infected counterparts or ddH2O samples washes, with testing one week or ten months after sample collection.

Assays for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) with high sensitivity as well as on-site screening have been urgently required to protect ecosystem and prevent disease. Herein, a novel fluorimetric sensing platform was constructed for quantitative detection of OPs via tyrosinase (TYR) enzyme-controlled quenching of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). One-step green synthetic approach was developed for the synthesis of AuNCs by using chicken egg white (CEW) as template and stabilizer. Initially, TYR can catalyze the oxidation of dopamine to dopaminechrome, which can efficiently quench the fluorescence intensity of AuNCs at 630 nm based on dynamic quenching process. However, with the presence of OPs, the activity of TYR was inhibited, resulting in the fluorescence recovery of AuNCs. This proposed fluorescence platform was demonstrated to enable rapid detection for OPs (paraoxon as model) and to provide excellent sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.1 ng mL −1 . Significantly, the fluorescence probe was used to prepare paper-based test strips for visual detection of OPs, which validated the excellent potential for real-time and on-site application.

Plastic waste at the coastal wetland in Martil beach in the North-East of Morocco is one of the problems that have appeared recently. This study aims to characterize the marine debris in the coast of Martil during the year 2015. The sampling is seasonally by type and size. The result shows, for the macro debris, the abundance of plastic (57%), lumber and paper (21.93%), cloth and fabric (7.8%), glass (5.42%), metal (4.40%), and rubber (3.4%). Micro debris is also present in the area in several forms such as wood, plants, and others by 75,63%. This was followed by the foam (26,95%), line (7,8%), and the film (1,23%). The seasonal variation (S1: January–March and S3: July to September) are the most polluted months of the year. The sources of marine debris are mainly tourism (beach users), land (run off), and commercial fishing in the four seasons of the year.

Observers rank partly visible postures on video frames differently than fully visible postures, but it's not clear if this is due to differences in observer perception. This study investigated the effect of posture visibility on between-observer variability in assessments of trunk and arm posture. Trained observers assessed trunk and arm postures from video recordings of 84 pulp mill shifts using a work sampling approach; postures were also categorized as ‘fully’ or ‘partly’ visible. Between-worker, between-day, and between-observer variance components and corresponding confidence intervals were calculated. Although no consistent gradient was seen for the trunk, right upper arm posture showed smaller between-observer variance when all observers rated a posture as fully visible. This suggests that, partly-visible data, especially when observers disagree as to the level of visibility, introduces more between-observer variability when compared to fully visible data. Some previously-identified differences in daily posture summaries may be related to this phenomenon.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a genetic haemolytic disorder. Most persons with G6PD deficiency are asymptomatic, but exposure to oxidant drugs, such as the anti-malarial drug primaquine, may induce haemolysis, which is commonly found in Asian countries. A reliable test is necessary for diagnosing the deficiency to prevent an acute haemolytic crisis. This study proposes a novel quantitative method to detect G6PD deficiency using paper-based analytical devices (G6PDD-PAD). Wax printing was utilized for fabricating circular reaction zone patterns in paper. The colorimetric assay is based on the formation of formazan via a reduction of tetra-nitro blue tetrazolium (TNBT) by the G6PD enzyme on G6PDD-PAD. Detection was achieved by capturing the colour using a desktop scanner and the colour intensity was analysed with Adobe Photoshop C56. Paper mill effluents are complex mixtures containing different toxic compounds including endocrine-disrupting (EDCs) and genotoxic compounds. In the present study non-concentrated raw and biologically treated wastewaters from two paper mill plants with different paper production technologies i) Paper mill A uses virgin fibres, and ii) Paper mill B uses recycled fibres for paper production and the corresponding receiving surface waters, were assessed for their cytotoxic/genotoxic activity with SOS/umuC, Ames MPF 98/100 Aqua, and comet assay with human hepatoma HepG2 cells. In addition the levels of seven selected EDCs were quantified in wastewater samples and receiving surface waters. All investigated EDCs were confirmed in raw and biologically treated effluents from both paper mills with concentrations being markedly higher in Paper mill B effluents. In the receiving surface waters three of the studied EDCs were determined downstream of both paper mills effluent discharge. The wastewater samples and the recipient surface water samples from Paper mill A were not mutagenic for bacteria and did not induce DNA damage in HepG2 cells. On the contrary, half of the raw wastewater samples from Paper mill B were mutagenic whereas biologically treated wastewater and the recipient surface water samples were negative. In HepG2 cells most of the raw and biologically treated wastewater samples from Paper mill B as well as surface water samples collected downstream of Paper mill B effluent discharge induced DNA damage. The results confirmed that genotoxic contaminants were present only in wastewaters from Paper mill B that uses recycled fibres for paper production, and that the combined aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment procedure efficiently reduced contaminants that are bacterial mutagens, but not those that induce DNA damage in HepG2 cells. This study highlights that in addition to chemical analyses bioassays are needed for a comprehensive toxicological evaluation of complex wastewater samples.

Neisseria meningitidis (N. meningitidis), Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) are three most common pathogens accounting for most bacterial meningitis, a serious global infectious disease with high fatality, especially in developing nations. Because the treatment and antibiotics differ among each type, the identification of the exact bacteria causing the disease is vital. Herein, we report a polymer/paper hybrid microfluidic biochip integrated with loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for multiplexed instrument-free diagnosis of these three major types of bacterial meningitis, with high sensitivity and specificity. Results can be visually observed by the naked eye or imaged by a smartphone camera under a portable UV light source. Without using any specialized laboratory instrument, the limits of detection of a few DNA copies per LAMP zone for N. meningitidis, S. pneumoniae and Hib were achieved within 1 hour. In addition, these three types of microorganisms spiked in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF) were directly detected simultaneously, avoiding cumbersome sample preparation procedures in conventional methods. Compared with the paper-free non-hybrid microfluidic biochip over a period of three months, the hybrid microfluidic biochip was found to have a much longer shelf life. Hence, this rapid, instrument-free and highly sensitive microfluidic approach has great potential for point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of multiple infectious diseases simultaneously, especially in resource-limited settings.

The use of natural esters as an insulating liquid has become popular since the early 2000s. Studies in the literature emphasize the superiority of natural esters as compared to mineral oils. In these studies, the prominent properties of natural esters are presented as being environmentally friendly, safe, and delaying the aging of cellulosic insulation material. Although there is no doubt in terms of their characteristics, such as being environmentally and safe, exaggerated comments are made about the delay of aging of the paper material used in the insulation of transformer windings. This is because comparative experimental applications on mineral oil and natural esters are carried out under artificial and equal conditions provided in the laboratory environment. Whereas, performing these experiments on identical transformers will give more realistic results. In this study, two identical transformers were designed and equipped with precision fiber optic temperature sensors. Temperature differences that vary depending on the load between high voltage and low voltage windings were measured with a high degree of accuracy for both identical transformers. Besides these measurements, physical and chemical changes were analyzed on samples taken from insulation liquids. It was observed that the physical and chemical properties of the insulation liquids directly affect the operating performance of the transformers. Thanks to the differences in viscosity of insulating liquids, the heat dissipation due to losses in the windings were different for both transformers. Both heat distribution and temperature differences in the windings varied depending on the loading factors. Considering all these factors together, comprehensively evaluations were made on the aging rate of cellulosic insulation and the service life of the transformers. By classifying materials according to virus stability on their surface, the following list is obtained (from long to short stability): polypropylene (mask), plastic, glass, stainless steel, pig skin, cardboard, banknote, cotton, wood, paper, tissue, copper. These observations and other studies suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may be inactivated by dryness on water absorbent porous materials but sheltered by long-persisting micro-droplets of water on waterproof surfaces. If such physical phenomenons were confirmed by direct evidence, the persistence of the virus on any surface could be predicted, and new porous objects could be designed to eliminate the virus faster.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical-epidemiological factors associated with victims of rattlesnake envenoming in the state of Roraima, Brazil. In this location, rattlesnake accidents are caused by the subspecies Crotalus durissus ruruima. This is a prospective observational study carried out at the General Hospital of Roraima from april 2017 until july 2018. A total of 37 alleged rattlesnake victims had their medical records evaluated. However only one of them proved to be by C. d. ruruima. All individuals were residents from the savannas (lavrados) of Roraima. The town of Bonfim on the border between Brazil and Guyana had the highest occurrence of rattlesnake bites. The most affected group were males aged 13–20 years and farmers. The highest number of incidents occurred during daytime and lower limbs (feet) were the most major affected part of the body. Tourniquets were used as first aid after snake envenoming in 32.4% of victims. Out of 37 patients, 16.2% were classified as severe cases of snakebite envenoming and in 5.4% dry bites seem to have occurred. Among the symptomatic patients, 100% presented local manifestations and 70.3% presented systemic manifestations. The clinical setting showed local effects such as pain and edema while the systemic effects were blurred vision, myalgias, myasthenic facies, palpebral ptosis, muscle weakness and headache. Laboratory results of aspartate aminotransferase (62.2%), creatine phosphokinase (51.3%), lactic dehydrogenase (37.8%), urea level (32.4%) and serum creatinine (29.7%) were increased significantly in relation to the reference standards. In 16.2% of the cases, the victims presented acute kidney injury. Patients were treated with anticrotalic serum in 70.3% of the cases and antibotropic + anticrotalic serum in 24.3%. The victims of C. d. ruruima in Roraima showed a local symptomatology similar to Bothrops envenoming, while systemic symptoms and laboratory analysis proved kidney and muscular injuries, similar to envenoming by Crotalus d. terrificus in Brazil., Highlights • This report describes the envenoming of victims of snakes Crotalus d. ruruima. • In Roraima, rattlesnake accidents are caused by Crotalus durissus ruruima. • The symptoms and signs at the bite site were similar to envenoming by Bothrops. • The systemic symptoms were similar to envenoming by Crotalus d. terrificus. • After specific treatment all victims of envenoming evolved to cure.

The method for seafood spoilage detection is far from satisfactory for ensuring food safety and security. Here, we develop a simple and cost-effective method using the filter papers loaded with a dihydroquinoxaline derivative (H + DQ2) to monitor salmon spoilage. The correlation between the content of solid biogenic amines and the photoluminescence intensity (PL) of H + DQ2 induced by amine vapours showed that the PL intensities of H + DQ2 increased with the increase of spoilage, which indicates that it is feasible to evaluate the spoilage degree of salmon based on the PL intensity of H + DQ2-loaded filter papers by semi-quantitation. The optimum detection condition is 75, 50 and 50 g of salmon, 75, 25 and 10 µM H + DQ2 at 0, 4 and 25 °C, respectively. This study provides a quick and simple way for testing amine vapour from fish and provides baseline information for developing an easy-to-use on-site method to evaluate seafood quality for customers.

We studied the avoidance behaviour of the earthworm Eisenia fetida towards Cd, Cu, and Zn, trace elements (TEs) tested as chloride, nitrate and sulphate salts. Sub adults were exposed individually using dual-cell chambers at 20+2°C in the dark. Recordings were realised at different dates from 2h to 32h. We used filter paper and extruded water agar gel as exposure media to evaluate the contribution of the dermal and the digestive exposure routes on the avoidance reactions. Exposures to Cu or Cd (10mgmetal ionL(-1)) resulted in highly significant avoidance reactions through the exposure duration. Worms avoided Zn poorly and reactions towards Zn salts varied along the exposure. Worm sensitivity towards TEs differed between salts and this could result from differential toxicity or accessibility of these TE salts to earthworms. The anion in itself was not the determinant of the avoidance reactions since exposures to similar concentrations of these anions using calcium salts did not result in significant avoidance worm behaviour. Avoidance responses towards TEs were higher in the case of water agar exposures than in filter paper exposures. Thus, dermal contacts with TE solutions would elicit worm avoidance but signals from receptors located inside the digestive tract could reinforce this behaviour. The use of extruded water agar gels as the substrate allows checking the real sensitivity of earthworm species towards TEs since the TE concentrations leading to significant avoidance reactions were below those reported in the literature when using TE-spiked soils.

Objective Most preventable adverse drug events and medication errors occur during medication ordering. Medication order entry and clinical decision support are available on paper or as computerized systems. In this post-hoc analysis we investigated frequency and clinical impact of blood glucose (BG) documentation- and user-related calculation errors as well as workflow deviations in diabetes management. We aimed to compare a paper-based protocol to a computerized medication management system combined with clinical workflow and decision support. Methods Seventy-nine hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were treated with an algorithm driven basal-bolus insulin regimen. BG measurements, which were the basis for insulin dose calculations, were manually entered either into the paper-based workflow protocol (PaperG: 37 patients) or into GlucoTab ® —a mobile tablet PC based system (CompG: 42 patients). We used BG values from the laboratory information system as a reference. A workflow simulator was used to determine user calculation errors as well as workflow deviations and to estimate the effect of errors on insulin doses. The clinical impact of insulin dosing errors and workflow deviations on hypo- and hyperglycemia was investigated. Results The BG documentation error rate was similar for PaperG (4.9%) and CompG group (4.0%). In PaperG group, 11.1% of manual insulin dose calculations were erroneous and the odds ratio (OR) of a hypoglycemic event following an insulin dosing error was 3.1 (95% CI: 1.4–6.8). The number of BG values influenced by insulin dosing errors was eightfold higher than in the CompG group. In the CompG group, workflow deviations occurred in 5.0% of the tasks which led to an increased likelihood of hyperglycemia, OR 2.2 (95% CI: 1.1–4.6). Discussion Manual insulin dose calculations were the major source of error and had a particularly strong influence on hypoglycemia. By using GlucoTab ® , user calculation errors were entirely excluded. The immediate availability and automated handling of BG values from medical devices directly at the point of care has a high potential to reduce errors. Computerized systems facilitate the safe use of more complex insulin dosing algorithms without compromising usability. In CompG group, missed or delayed tasks had a significant effect on hyperglycemia, while in PaperG group insufficient precision of documentation times limited analysis. The use of old BG measurements was clinically less relevant. Conclusion Insulin dosing errors and workflow deviations led to measurable changes in clinical outcome. Diabetes management systems including decision support should address nurses as well as physicians in a computerized way. Our analysis shows that such systems reduce the frequency of errors and therefore decrease the probability of hypo- and hyperglycemia.
