In 2015 the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (Sociedad Espanola de Reumatologia [SER]) published its position paper on biosimilar drugs. In this update, the SER, continues to manifest its unequivocal commitment to the sustainability of the health system of our country and is aligned with the measures that, without reducing quality of care, are aimed at ensuring its continuity. Since the publication of the previous position paper, the European Commission has authorized new biosimilar drugs, which provides an excellent opportunity to advance the efficiency of health care. In this new scenario of increased therapeutic offer of biologics, the SER considers it crucial to preserve the freedom of prescription of physicians who prescribe drugs based exclusively on the characteristics and individual circumstances of each patient, without forgetting the economic aspects there of.

Thermal printing is a fast, widespread and inexpensive technology that uses a developer to produce a print on the paper, among many applications. A common developer is bisphenol A (BPA), used for this purpose in its free form. Consequently, the handling of thermal paper, as evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority, was reported to be the second largest source of external human exposure to this endocrine disrupting chemical. Recently, reports have been made on the substitution of BPA by alternative developers, which are yet less studied. In this study, 311 receipts and other thermal paper products were collected from 14 countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Oceania and analysed using liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. BPA was the most frequently used main developer and was detected in 194 thermal paper samples, which represents a detection frequency of 63%. A statistically significant difference in the detection of BPA was shown between continents. BPA was followed by bisphenol S (BPS) which was detected in 64 samples as the main developer. Pergafast 201 was the third most abundant main developer and detected in 37 samples as the main developer. Less frequently used main developers included BPS-MAE, TGSA, d -8, and d -90, many of them being BPS derivatives. Two oligomers of d -90 (n = 1 and n = 2) were also identified. The sensitizer diphenyl sulphone (DPS) was identified using high-resolution mass spectrometry for the first time and detected in combination with other developers than BPS for the first time. Despite the lack of structural, nation-wide legislation prohibiting the use of BPA in thermal paper, it is clear that alternative developers are currently globally in use for the manufacturing of thermal paper.

Thermophilic methane fermentation was a valid approach for handling the stillage eluted from ethanol fermentation of waste paper and kitchen waste. The wide organic loading rate (OLR) range (2-14 g VTS/(L d)) for stable performance and relatively high energy recovery efficiency (79.0%) were achieved, and OLR of 8 g VTS/(L d) was optimum for achievement of highest biogas evolution and VTS removal efficiency. Microbial community analysis revealed that hydrolysis of cellulose was the critical step for methane production from the stillage.

A description of a case is presented on a relationship between paper-based documents as a risk factor for fungal keratitis. A 32-year-old woman, a long-term contact lens user, presented with fungal keratitis in her right eye caused by Fusarium spp. while working with books and old documents as a librarian. Her visual acuity was hand motion in the right eye. She was satisfactorily treated with topical antifungal and antibiotic agents.

Background In Software Engineering (SE), conference publications have high importance both in effective communication and in academic careers. Researchers actively discuss how a paper should be organized to be accepted in mainstream conferences. Aiming This work tackles the problem of generalizing and characterizing the type of papers accepted at SE conferences. Method The paper offers a new perspective in the analysis of SE literature: a categorization scheme for SE papers is obtained by merging, extending and revising related proposals from a few existing studies. The categorization scheme is used to classify the papers accepted at three top-tier SE conferences during five years (2012–2016). Results While a broader experience is certainly needed for validation and fine-tuning, preliminary outcomes can be observed relative to what problems and topics are addressed, what types of contributions are presented and how they are validated. Conclusions The results provide insights to paper writers, paper reviewers and conference organizers in focusing their future efforts, without any intent to provide judgments or authoritative guidelines.

Many paper products are coated with plastic to improve their quality and stability. However, this limits recycling and recovery options and the plastic-coated waste paper is mostly disposed in landfills. Such practices are uneconomical and contrary to sustainable waste management. In this work enzymes of the white rot fungus Dichomitus squalens were investigated for possible delamination of plastic-coated waste paper. Enzymes were found capable to release the polyethylene foil from plastic-coated paper which resulted in 88.6-91.5% mass loss. The delamination rate, however, was depended on the ratio between plastic-coated paper and volume of enzyme filtrate. Results of a consequent experiment showed that enzymes are also efficient when plastic-coated paper is treated in a sequencing batch reactor resulting in 88.2-90.6% mass loss. The system was fully functional up to the 5th cycle; afterwards, the delamination rate reduced due to high thickness of the waste paper sludge. The enzyme activity, however, was still very high; with the laccase activity at the end of the experiment above 900 U/L and manganese peroxidase above 250 U/L. Our results demonstrated, that plastic-coated waste paper has the potential to be efficiently recovered instead of being disposed in landfills.

In paper conservation practice, adhesives are used for several purposes, such as mending tears and gaps, or paper consolidation. The criteria to choose one or another adhesive should be based on the knowledge of the properties and stability of those adhesives. However, the several different adhesives available on the market still lack enough information to help the process of a rational decision-making. In the present work, five adhesives currently used in the paper conservation field (starch paste, unsupported ArchibondTM, carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose and methylcellulose) were analyzed for their chemical stability and fungal bioreceptivity (the ability of a material to be colonized by fungi). Bioreceptivity of products used in conservation and restoration is a still poorly explored subject, despite its great relevance for the preservation of objects. The chemical and physical properties of the adhesives, before and after moist heat artificial ageing, were analyzed by thermogravimetry, capillary viscometry, measurement of water absorption capacity, colourimetry, and pH measurement. Fungal bioreceptivity of the adhesives was tested on two different substrates (paper and glass) against three fungal species: Aspergillus niger, Aureobasidium pullulans and Penicillium pinophilum. Along 56 days of incubation, the colonization area on the adhesives was measured through digital photo analysis. Starch paste was the most bioreceptive adhesive, but on other hand was also the most stable adhesive to artificial ageing, regarding colour alteration, degree of polymerization and pH. Carboxymethylcellulose and ArchibondTM showed chemical deterioration with ageing. Nevertheless, these two adhesives presented only scarce bioreceptivity to the tested fungi. Methylcellulose and hydroxypropylcellulose showed the best relationship between higher chemical stability with artificial ageing and lower fungal bioreceptivity.

Highlights • Retrieval of BoHV-1 DNA from extended semen spotted paper matrix was optimized. • The method was repeatable in inter-assay and intra-assay precision testing. • Viral DNA was stable in the matrix for at least 28 days when stored at 4°–37 °C. • The analytical sensitivity was equivalent to the OIE approved Chelex based method. • The dsn and dsp was 83% and 93% respectively in comparison to Chelex based method., The extended frozen semen (EFS) batches produced from infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) sero-positive cattle and buffalo bulls housed in various semen stations in India are transported to the testing laboratory in liquid nitrogen (LN2) for screening bovine herpesvirus-1 (BoHV-1). This procedure is laborious and poses LN2 related hazards. An alternative logistics for transportation of samples was investigated. Use of Flinders Technology Associates (FTA®) elute card was evaluated for transportation of extended bovine semen to screen BoHV-1 DNA by real-time PCR targeting gB gene and the method was compared with the OIE approved Chelex resin based method. A protocol for extraction of BoHV-1 DNA from FTA® card spotted with extended semen was optimized. The viral DNA was found to be stable on FTA® card for at least 28 days when the cards are stored at 4°–37 °C. The analytical sensitivity for the assay was determined using variable dilutions of BoHV-1 spiked semen and positive plasmid harbouring gB gene (97bp) spotted onto FTA® card and it was found to be 100.8 TCID50/ml or 100 copies respectively in real-time PCR. The test could detect as low as 100.008 TCID50/ml or 1 copy of positive plasmid when more number of replicates (n = 6) of the same sample were tested. This sensitivity was found to be comparable to Chelex method and both the methods demonstrated a very strong correlation (r = 0.9774; 95% CI: 0.9620–0.9860) in terms of Ct value (p

It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, School Nutrition Association (SNA), and Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior (SNEB) that comprehensive, integrated nutrition programs in preschool through high school are essential to improve the health, nutritional status, and academic performance of our nation's children. To maximize impact, the Academy, SNA, and SNEB recommend specific strategies in the following key areas: food and nutrition services available throughout the school campus, nutrition initiatives such as Farm to School and school gardens, wellness policies, nutrition education and promotion, and consideration of roles and responsibilities. This paper supports the joint position paper of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, SNA, and SNEB published in the May 2018 Journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In alignment with the joint position paper, this practice paper provides registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered with an overview of current school nutrition services and opportunities for professional careers in school settings. Human blood is a self-regenerating lipid-rich biological fluid that is routinely collected in hospital settings. The inventory of lipid molecules found in blood plasma (plasma lipidome) offers insights into individual metabolism and physiology in health and disease. Disturbances in the plasma lipidome also occur in conditions that are not directly linked to lipid metabolism; therefore, plasma lipidomics based on MS is an emerging tool in an array of clinical diagnostics and disease management. However, challenges exist in the translation of such lipidomic data to clinical applications. These relate to the reproducibility, accuracy, and precision of lipid quantitation, study design, sample handling, and data sharing. This position paper emerged from a workshop that initiated a community-led process to elaborate and define a set of generally accepted guidelines for quantitative MS-based lipidomics of blood plasma or serum, with harmonization of data acquired on different instrumentation platforms across independent laboratories as an ultimate goal. We hope that other fields may benefit from and follow such a precedent.

A bacterium isolated from effluent of thermal paper industry and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAb1) based on 16SrRNA gene sequence analysis which could grow on basal mineral salt medium upon bisphenol A, which functions as an exclusive carbon source. Physicochemical variables of thermal paper industry effluent noted were significantly greater than the typical limit due to pollution of the acquiring water systems. The mathematic kinetic models like Monod, Moser and Tesier models were applied for batch fermentation of bisphenol A degradation in basal salt medium and the half saturation coefficient (KS) and the regression coefficient R2 using Monad, Moser and Tesier kinetic models registered as 9.947 g/L, 12.46 g/L and 14.14 g/L and 0.91, 0.94 and 0.84 respectively. Besides, the utmost specific growth rate μmax was witnessed as 0.841 h−1 for the P. aeruginosa (PAb1) regarding BPA degradation. Metabolic intermediates like phenol, acetophenone, and hydroquinone and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were also determined through the degradation process by GC-MS. The metabolic pathway of BPA degradation by the bacterial isolates was also designed in today's analysis. A probabilistic statistical model originated using Box-Behnken response surface methodology and process variables were optimized by nonlinear optimization.

Bisphenol A (BPA) was commonly used as color developer for thermal paper such as cash register receipts, labels or tickets. Therefore, thermal paper was considered by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as the main source of human exposure to BPA beside epoxy based food contact materials. In this study, a German market analysis on the use of BPA and alternative color developers in thermal paper receipts is provided for the years 2015, 2016 and 2017.114 (2015), 98 (2016) and 99 (2017) samples were randomly collected and analyzed by HPLC-DAD. In summary, BPA was still the most frequently found color developer (48.2% in 2015, 46.9% in 2016 and 52.5% in 2017). The most commonly used alternative was the phenol-free substance Pergafast® 201 (34.2%, 33.7%, 40.4%). The bisphenol analogs bisphenol S (BPS; 11.4%, 9.2%, 6.1%) and D8 (6.1%, 7.1%, 1.0%) were less common. Another phenol-free substituent, a urea urethane compound (UU), was also detected (3.1% in 2016). Concentrations of color developers in thermal paper ranged from 1.4 to 32.4 mg/g (median values between 2.5 and 15.9 mg/g). Concentrations of BPA were found to be highest followed by BPS, UU, Pergafast® 201 and D8. In addition, two pharmacologically active substances, dapsone (6.0 mg/g) and tolbutamide (5.5 mg/g), were detected in a non-marketed thermal paper, that was supposed to use ascorbic acid as initial color developer. Different release experiments of the detected color developers were performed. Sensitizers 1,2-diphenoxy-ethane, 1-phenylmethoxy-naphthalene and diphenylsulfone, used frequently in the thermal paper processes, were quantified.

Although nucleic acid amplification test (NAT) is widely used for pathogen detection, rapid NAT systems that do not require special and expensive instruments must be developed in order to enable point of care (POC)-NATs, which contribute to early initiation of treatment. As a POC-NAT system, Kaneka DNA chromatography chip (KDCC), developed using DNA tag-bound primer through modified substance, was shown to be suitable for POC testing, due to the rapid detection time, simple procedures, and low manufacturing costs. However, owing to some modifications in primer, the detection performance and amplification speed were shown to be reduced when using KDCC, counteracting the increased speed of detection. To solve these issues and improve the speed of this NAT system, we investigated a better modification substance for KDCC. Here, azobenzene-modified primers were shown to have the highest amplification speed and detection performance in KDCC, of all modifications tested in this study, showing 10-100-fold lower detection limit but maintaining the same reaction time. Additionally, rapid herpes simplex virus detection system with azobenzene modified primers was developed. We believed that this breakthrough will contribute toward enabling greater utilization of POC-NATs for medical care, especially in developing countries and clinics.

Mutations in the genes COL4A3, COL4A4, and COL4A5 affect the synthesis, assembly, deposition, or function of the collagen IV α345 molecule, the major collagenous constituent of the mature mammalian glomerular basement membrane. These mutations are associated with a spectrum of nephropathy, from microscopic hematuria to progressive renal disease leading to ESRD, and with extrarenal manifestations such as sensorineural deafness and ocular anomalies. The existing nomenclature for these conditions is confusing and can delay institution of appropriate nephroprotective therapy. Herein we propose a new classification of genetic disorders of the collagen IV α345 molecule with the goal of improving renal outcomes through regular monitoring and early treatment.

It is not easy to directly obtain concentrations of auxin (mainly indole-3-acetic acid, or IAA) and other phytohormones in different locations of individual plants although such information is critical for the study of their functions. Here we developed a paper-based analytical device consisting of a disposable working electrode to provide a platform for direct and simultaneous detection of free IAA and salicylic acid (SA) in different parts of pea seedlings with the weights of several milligrams. The double sided conductive carbon tape modified with carbon nanotube was used as the disposable working electrodes after they were treated with oxygen plasma. Different parts of pea seedlings were applied on the surface of working electrodes for direct electrochemical detection of free IAA and SA in paper-based analytical devices. The requirement of solution volumes with only 10 microliters made it possible to quantify free IAA and SA at the level of ng. Our results suggested that large amounts of inherent IAA and SA could be lost because of complicated and time-consuming preparation of samples in traditional gas/liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods Our approach not only avoids such steps but also provides concentrations of IAA and SA in different zones of individual pea seedlings. The obtained results could be applied for the study of individual differences and interactions between IAA and SA in development of peas. This strategy not only paved the foundation for further investigation of regulating mechanisms of free IAA and its interaction with other phytohormones but also might provide an alternative approach for detection of free electroactive biomolecules in other living organs.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) represents a growing and global concern for public health that needs inexpensive and convenient methods to collect mosquitoes as potential carriers so that they can be preserved, stored and transported for later and/or remote analysis. Reported here is a cellulose-based paper, derivatized with quaternary ammonium groups (“Q-paper”) that meets these needs. In a series of tests, infected mosquito bodies were squashed directly on to Q-paper. Aqueous ammonia was then added on the mosquito bodies to release viral RNA that adsorbed on the cationic surface via electrostatic interactions. The samples were then stored (frozen) or transported. For analysis, the CHIKV nucleic acids were eluted from the Q-paper and PCR amplified in a workflow, previously developed, that also exploited two nucleic acid innovations, (“artificially expanded genetic information systems”, AEGIS, and “self-avoiding molecular recognition systems”, SAMRS). The amplicons were then analyzed by a Luminex hybridization assay. This procedure detected CHIKV RNA, if present, in each infected mosquito sample, but not in non-infected counterparts or ddH2O samples washes, with testing one week or ten months after sample collection.

Background The goal of this study was to assess the biochemical parameters of the enzymes α- l -iduronidase (IDUA) and arylsulfatase B (ASB), which are deficient in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) I and VI, respectively, in dried blood spot (DBS) samples impregnated on filter paper. Methods and results The optimal pH, Km, and Vmax of IDUA and ASB in DBS are hereby presented. After these analyses, the reference values for the activities of these enzymes in DBS with cutoff of 3.65 nmol/h/mL for IDUA and 6.80 nmol/h/mL for ASB were established. The research also showed that the stability (21 days) of the IDUA activity is lower than ASB, which maintained its enzymatic activity stable up until 60 days of analysis, after impregnating the filter paper with blood. Conclusion Currently, DBS ensures important advantages in handling storage and transportation of samples with respect to neonatal screening programs. This study contributes to characterizing and differentiating the biochemistry of deficient enzymes in MPSs I and VI of DBS samples.

Pulp and paper mill effluent can cause changes in the morphology and energy metabolism in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) testis. Betulin, a naturally occurring triterpene is commonly present in this type of effluent and is suspected of being involved in these effects. The aim of this study was to compare the effects pulp and paper mill effluent and betulin on various aspects of testicular physiology in the zebrafish. This included the in vitro effects of effluent and betulin on testicular lactate content and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. In addition, the effects of betulin on glucose uptake, glycogen, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), reactive oxygen and nitrogen species formation and oxidative damage in the testes were determined. Furthermore, we compared the effects and mechanism of action of betulin and effluent on calcium homeostasis in testes. In vitro exposure to both effluent and betulin decreased lactate and calcium influx, possibly due to the activation of the sodium‑calcium exchanger (NCX) pump. Additionally, betulin-treated testes had higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) content, as well as increased glutathione transferase (GST) activity and a tendency towards decreased catalase (CAT) activity. Thus, this study shows that alterations in testis physiology caused by the pulp and paper mill effluent in the testis may be due in part to the actions of betulin.

Summary Background & aims Nutrition education is necessary in the training of healthcare professionals, including medical students. However, recent surveys showed that there is a high variability within Medical Schools in different countries. The aim of this ESPEN position paper is to identify a minimum curriculum knowledge in nutrition that serves to improve the training of the future doctors and how to solve the main barriers of its implementation in university centres. Methods In 2017, the ESPEN Executive Committee launched the Nutrition Education in Medical Schools (NEMS) Project and formed a core working group including members of the ESPEN Nutrition Education Study Group (NESG) and representatives of several European Medical Schools. This group met in Brussels, on 19th July 2018 and decided to prepare a position paper on this topic. Results Five main learning objectives and twenty-one topics on human nutrition, within its three domains (basic, applied and clinical nutrition) were identified to be fulfilled at the end of training in all Medical Schools. The experts showed the following key factors for its implementation: establish a nutrition curriculum committee, use different models of integration of the contents in the curriculum (vertical and horizontal), have a multidisciplinary and experienced faculty, incorporate a variety of teaching models, and evaluate the programme periodically. Conclusions Nutrition Education is necessary and should be mandatory in all Medical Schools. This position paper aims at improving this gap knowledge and gives some clues for a successful implementation of the changes in the medical curriculum at university centres.

In this study, a paper-based sensor combined with visual distance-readout technique for point of-care testing (POCT) of urea was developed by urease-mediated chitosan viscosity change. A series of factors that affect the performance of the sensor were investigated, including the type of filter paper, chitosan concentration, acetic acid concentration and enzymatic reaction conditions. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method for urea determination has good linearity between 3.8–15.1 mM. The limit of quantitation is 3.8 mM. Finally, the paper-based sensor was successfully applied to the determination of urea in two diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) samples. The recoveries of urea were 91.4 % and 109.9 % in DEF-1 and DEF-2, respectively. The present study provides a novel approach, which integrates paper-based sensor and visual distance-readout technique, for monitoring urea in POCT application, especially in remote or resource-limited regions.

Summary Background & aims This review aims to clarify the use of indirect calorimetry (IC) in nutritional therapy for critically ill and other patient populations. It features a comprehensive overview of the technical concepts, the practical application and current developments of IC. Methods Pubmed-referenced publications were analyzed to generate an overview about the basic knowledge of IC, to describe advantages and disadvantages of the current technology, to clarify technical issues and provide pragmatic solutions for clinical practice and metabolic research. The International Multicentric Study Group for Indirect Calorimetry (ICALIC) has generated this position paper. Results IC can be performed in in- and out-patients, including those in the intensive care unit, to measure energy expenditure (EE). Optimal nutritional therapy, defined as energy prescription based on measured EE by IC has been associated with better clinical outcome. Equations based on simple anthropometric measurements to predict EE are inaccurate when applied to individual patients. An ongoing international academic initiative to develop a new indirect calorimeter aims at providing innovative and affordable technical solutions for many of the current limitations of IC. Conclusion Indirect calorimetry is a tool of paramount importance, necessary to optimize the nutrition therapy of patients with various pathologies and conditions. Recent technical developments allow broader use of IC for in- and out-patients.

Paper mill effluents are complex mixtures containing different toxic compounds including endocrine-disrupting (EDCs) and genotoxic compounds. In the present study non-concentrated raw and biologically treated wastewaters from two paper mill plants with different paper production technologies i) Paper mill A uses virgin fibres, and ii) Paper mill B uses recycled fibres for paper production and the corresponding receiving surface waters, were assessed for their cytotoxic/genotoxic activity with SOS/umuC, Ames MPF 98/100 Aqua, and comet assay with human hepatoma HepG2 cells. In addition the levels of seven selected EDCs were quantified in wastewater samples and receiving surface waters. All investigated EDCs were confirmed in raw and biologically treated effluents from both paper mills with concentrations being markedly higher in Paper mill B effluents. In the receiving surface waters three of the studied EDCs were determined downstream of both paper mills effluent discharge. The wastewater samples and the recipient surface water samples from Paper mill A were not mutagenic for bacteria and did not induce DNA damage in HepG2 cells. On the contrary, half of the raw wastewater samples from Paper mill B were mutagenic whereas biologically treated wastewater and the recipient surface water samples were negative. In HepG2 cells most of the raw and biologically treated wastewater samples from Paper mill B as well as surface water samples collected downstream of Paper mill B effluent discharge induced DNA damage. The results confirmed that genotoxic contaminants were present only in wastewaters from Paper mill B that uses recycled fibres for paper production, and that the combined aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment procedure efficiently reduced contaminants that are bacterial mutagens, but not those that induce DNA damage in HepG2 cells. This study highlights that in addition to chemical analyses bioassays are needed for a comprehensive toxicological evaluation of complex wastewater samples.

In the past, the animal glues were used in paper manufacturing and in restoration of artworks preserved in museums, libraries and archives. By ageing they went through deterioration creating distortions, tensions, cockling and discolouration in paper materials. Consequently, the removal of glue residues becomes an essential step in the restoration of ancient and artwork paper material. Current mechanical and chemical methods display serious drawbacks mainly related to aggressiveness towards material or toxicity for restorers. Bio-based methods for paper cleaning rely on the use of enzymes that require skilled operators, optimal application conditions and high costs, creating difficulties in mastering enzyme use so far. This paper describes a first attempt of biocleaning ancient paper from organic deposits using living bacteria. The non-pathogenic, non-spore-forming and non-cellulolytic original strain Ochrobactrum sp. TNS15 E was successfully applied -immobilised in an agar gel-on original paper specimens dating back to the 17th. After 4 h of contact with the bacterial pack, the cellulose fibres underlying glue were disclosed, highlighting the bacterial capacity of removing the glue layer without damaging the paper or leaving undesirable residues. Both colorimetry and SEM analyses proved the results. The procedure is simple, low-cost and safe for the artefact, the restorers and the environment.

The one-dose package is useful for patients who are prescribed multiple medications. However, the one-dose packaging of hygroscopic medications is difficult because the quality of the medication is reduced by moisture absorption. Cellophane polyethylene laminating paper at 20 μm or 30 μm thickness and glassine papers are widely used for one-dose packaging. The basic characteristics, such as water permeability, of these packaging papers have been demonstrated by companies; however, the quality changes of hygroscopic medications stored in these packaging papers are poorly understood. In this study, we compared the relative humidity in packaging papers and the qualities of the stored hygroscopic medications among 20 μm and 30 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper and glassine paper. Glucobay® 50 mg, Magmitt® 330 mg, and Phosblock® 250 mg tablets were used as hygroscopic medications to be packaged and the relative humidity, weight change, and hardness of tablets were measured. The relative humidity decreased in the order of glassine paper, 20 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper, and 30 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper. Additionally, tablets inside the 30 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper gained the least weight. Therefore, tablets in a 30 μm thick polyethylene laminating paper absorb less moisture than those in other papers. However, the effect was less pronounced at high temperature, even if the relative humidity remained the same. In the present study, a phenol degrading actinomycetes strain was isolated from paper pulp wastewater. The isolated strain was identified as Rhodococcus pyridinivorans PDB9TN-1 using 16S rRNA gene sequencing technique, which yielded the complete degradation of 1600 mg l−1 of phenol within 56 h. Moreover, the Rhodococcus species could remove over 97.5% of total organic carbon (TOC) at an initial phenol concentration of 1000 mg l−1. The metabolic profile of phenol biodegradation by the actinomycetes species has been investigated using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The key intermediate products detected in the actinomycetes culture were hydroquinone, protocatechuic acid, beta-carboxycis-cismuconate, maleyl acetate, 4–oxalocrotonic acid and 3-fumarylpyruvic acid. Further, a tentative oxalocrotonic acid pathway has been proposed on the basis of the detected intermediate products. The culture medium constituents are highly indispensable for the microbial growth, enzyme and other cellular metabolic activities associated with phenol biodegradation. Therefore, the effect of media components were modelled with the help of response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD). A reliable quadratic model was established which predicted the degradation efficiency as high as 99.5% with an appreciable correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.98. Moreover, phenol degradation efficiency was improved with concentrations beyond the central values for all media components except K2HPO4 and NaCl.

Laccases are enzymes belonging to the group of oxidases. Laccases catalyze the oxidation of a variety of phenolic compounds, diamines and aromatic amines. Twenty-four fungal isolates were isolated from biodeteriorated ancient paper and parchment. These isolates were identified and found to belong to six genera: Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Rhizopus and Trichoderma, and were tested for producing laccase enzyme. Trichoderma harzianum have the ability of secreted laccase enzyme. The maximum production of laccase enzyme by T. harzianum was observed at 35 ○C and pH 5 after 6 days. The highest activity of laccase achieved at 35 ○C and pH 5 during the reaction. FTIR analysis revealed that the structure of extracted fungal pigments has aromatic ring and phenols group. Crude laccase was capable to decolorize different pigment structures. The enzyme showed great decolorization efficiency toward the extracted yellow pigment produced from Asp. terrus and Asp. ochareceous treated by 200 μl of partially purified enzyme. Laccase enzyme was used to decolorization pigment secreted from deteriorated pigmented fungi on paper and parchment during 30 days by using a pieces of paper and parchment inoculated by spore suspension. The results indicated that a high removal effect of fungal pigment on paper (71.21%) was recorded comparing to parchment samples (32.39%).

By classifying materials according to virus stability on their surface, the following list is obtained (from long to short stability): polypropylene (mask), plastic, glass, stainless steel, pig skin, cardboard, banknote, cotton, wood, paper, tissue, copper. These observations and other studies suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may be inactivated by dryness on water absorbent porous materials but sheltered by long-persisting micro-droplets of water on waterproof surfaces. If such physical phenomenons were confirmed by direct evidence, the persistence of the virus on any surface could be predicted, and new porous objects could be designed to eliminate the virus faster.

The therapeutic armamentarium for the treatment of patients with lymphoproliferative diseases has grown considerably over the most recent years, including a large use of new immunotherapeutic agents. As a consequence, the epidemiology of infectious complications in this group of patients is poorly documented, and even more importantly, the potential benefit of antimicrobial prophylaxis remains a matter of debate when considering the harmful effect from the emergence of multidrug resistant pathogens. The present position paper is addressed to all hematologists treating patients affected by lymphoproliferative malignancies with the aim to provide clinicians with a useful tool for the prevention of bacterial, fungal and viral infections.

Trichomes are specialized epidermal cells that play multiple roles in plant development. However, knowledge about the molecular mechanism of trichome development in rice is limited. In this study, a hairy leaf locus HL6 SWWR of rice variety Suwangwanger (SWWR) was identified by map-based cloning. Transgenic complementation and knock-out mutation demonstrated that HL6SWWR regulated trichomes on leaves and expression levels of HL6SWWR affected trichome elongation. Transgenic experiments of PROSWWR:HL6NIP and PRONIP:HL6SWWR indicated that the promoter and coding sequences of HL6SWWR were indispensable for trichome regulation. Sequencing alignment of the promoter and coding regions of HL6 in 22 varieties showed that some cis-binding elements in the promoter region may be related to trichome development, while no decisive variation was found in the coding sequence. Furthermore, RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that 1 415 differential expression genes (DEGs) were detected in hl6SWWR mutant vs wild type and that 1 010 DEGs were found in HL6SWWR complementary transgenic line vs wild type. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis showed that most of the DEGs were involved in metabolite pathway, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, plant pathogen interaction and phytohormone signal transduction in both the two groups. The results indicated that these enhanced pathways are critical during trichome development in rice. Taken together, our results provided new views into the regulatory mechanism of trichome formation in rice.

Effluents from paper mills are highly toxic and are a major source of aquatic pollution. In this study, we collected water and sediment samples to examine the microbial communities using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and identified bacterial taxa greatly affected by paper mill pollution using next-generation sequencing data. Our results indicated that bacterial communities in downstream sediments were similar to those in paper mill discharge sites, indicating obvious effects of pollution, while bacterial communities in downstream water samples showed similar profiles to those in upstream sites, both being quite different from the bacterial communities in paper mill discharge sites. This was possibly because of the short contact period. In addition, bacterial communities in the estuary were quite different from those in other water and sediment samples, which was owing to the special habitat type. Considering the storage of paper mill pollutants in sediment and the significant effect on shifts in bacterial communities, we selected Clostridia and Epsilonproteobacteria at the class level and Fusibacter and Desulfobulbus at the genus level as bacterial indicators of paper mill pollution. To monitor the remediation of polluted aquatic environments, we propose Sphingobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Subdivision3, Planctomycetacia and Verrucomicrobiae at the class level and Bacillus, Steroidobacter, Nocardioides, Terrimonas, Pirellula and Methylibium at the genus level.

It is always a challenge to determine the total cellulase activity efficiently without reducing accuracy. The most common total cellulase activity assay is the filter paper assay (FPA) established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). A new procedure to measure the FPA with microplate-based assay was studied in this work, which followed the main idea of IUPAC to dilute cellulase preparation to get fixed glucose release. FPAs of six cellulase preparations were determined with the microplate-based assay. It is shown that FPAs of cellulase Youtell, RCconc, R-10, Lerkam, Yishui and Sinopharm were 67.9, 46.0, 46.1, 27.4, 7.6 and 8.0IU/ml respectively. There was no significant difference at the 95% confidence level between the FPA determined with IUPAC and the microplate-based assay. It could be concluded that the FPA could be determined by the microplate-based assay with the same accuracy and much more efficiency compared with that by IUPAC.

Outbreaks involving the transmission of bloodborne pathogens or other microbial pathogens to patients in various types of health care settings due to unsafe injection, infusion, and medication vial practices are unacceptable. Each of the outbreaks could have been prevented by the use of proper aseptic technique in conjunction with basic infection prevention practices for handling parenteral medications, administration of injections, and procurement and sampling of blood. This document provides practice guidance for health care facilities on essential safe injection, infusion, and vial practices that should be consistently implemented in such settings.

Potential high bio-deterioration of certain microorganisms due to their metabolic activities on organic materials causes serious problems in the conservation of cultural heritage. This study focuses on establishing an efficient conservation strategy against microbial deterioration using biosynthesized nanoparticle (NPs). Isolation, identification, and characterization of microorganisms involved in deterioration of archaeological manuscript dating back to 17th century (1677 A.D) were conducted. Eleven bacterial species and fifteen fungal species were obtained and identified using 16S rRNA and ITS sequences, respectively. All strains exhibited potent cellulolytic activity. Bacillus subtilis strain (B3) and Penicillium chrysogenum strain (F9) achieved the highest cellulolytic activity amongst obtained bacterial and fungal strains. Paper models conservation effect of biosynthesized silver and zinc oxide NPs against strain (B3) and strain (F9) was evaluated. Microbial growth inhibition, color change according to CIE L*a*b* color space, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were assessed. Furthermore, morphology and the elemental component of paper models were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Silver NPs achieved better results than zinc oxide NPs for paper preservation. Application of 1.0 or 2.0 mM silver NPs exhibited the best preservation effect on the paper models achieving 100% microbial inhibition (bacteria and fungi, respectively). Moreover, NPs-treated paper models showed slight color change and exhibited similar structural analysis as original papers. These results showed the potentiality of this green strategy to be applied for conservation of cellulose-constructed cultural heritage.

Plastic film (PF) is a common soil mulching material used worldwide in crop production. In recent years there is an increasing demand for reducing the use of PF because of potential environmental- and ecological-risks. Although biodegradable paper (BP) and bio-based film (BB) have been used as alternatives to PF, little information is available regarding their efficiency in summer crop production, which is often restricted by the combination of heat stress and drought stress. To meet this need, PF (silver-gray plastic film made from polyethylene), BP (biodegradable paper made from plant straw) and BB (bio-based film made from plant straw combined with decomposed coal) were used as soil mulching materials to investigate their influence on soil properties (temperature, moisture, pH, electricity conductivity (EC), nutrients and enzymes), plant growth (root morphology, the relative growth rate (RGR), plant biomass and the root/shoot ratio), fruit yield and fruit quality. The un-mulched soil served as control. The trial was conducted in a five-year-old commercial greenhouse located in Helan county, Ningxia, China, with the mean air temperatures of about 32 °C and 31 °C during the summer season in 2016 and 2017, respectively. In general, although PF mulching increased soil moisture, it increased soil temperature, pH and EC and decreased available P, resulting in the reduction of plant growth (root length and diameter, the RGRs of plant height and leaf area, and shoot and root biomass) and fruit yield. The BB mulching decreased soil temperature, however, it decreased soil moisture and invertase and increased soil EC, leading to reduced root growth (root diameter and biomass, and the root/shoot ratio). The BP mulching not only decreased soil temperature, but also increased soil moisture. As a result, it showed several advantages such as decreasing soil EC, increasing soil enzyme activities, improving plant growth (root length, the RGRs of plant height and leaf area, plant biomass and the root/shoot ratio) and increasing fruit yield. Moreover, the fruit quality was partly improved by BP mulching due to reduced nitrate but increased vitamin C. Our results infer that BP was a potential mulching material that could be used for summer tomato production.

The development of highly sensitive and specific colorimetric biosensor for pathogens spot detection is currently researchers challenge. This study illustrates the design and development of specific peptide probe for the detection of specific proteases secreted from pathogens. These proteases precisely cleaved specific peptide substrate labeled with nano-magnetic beads and attached to gold sensing surface. The superiority of this approach is based on its low-cost, simplicity being colorimetric, can be run by unskilled personnel and can be applied to real samples (without the need for isolation or purification) in short time (1-5 minute). Furthermore the test can be printed/fabricated on personal healthcare.

SUMMARY Campylobacter is a human food-borne pathogen frequently associated with poultry and poultry products and can be found in high numbers within the gut contents of colonized broilers. The number of Campylobacter on broiler carcasses increases markedly during automated defeathering as rubber picker fingers press on the abdomen and can force gut contents out of the cloaca. One method to prevent this increase is to plug the cloaca and prevent escape of gut contents. For a plug to be effective, it must resist expulsion during picking. In the current work, we test shredded sponge or paper as a means to plug broiler carcass cloacae during automated feather removal. Broiler carcass cloacae were plugged before scalding and carcasses were sampled to determine the bacterial numbers present on breast skin after scalding (before feather picking) and again after feather picking. Neither 50 cc of shredded paper nor 25 cc of shredded sponge was effective as a cloacal plug. However, a plug made of 50 cc shredded sponge material was effective to occlude broiler carcass vents during automated defeathering. Significantly fewer Campylobacter cells were detected on the breast skin of post pick carcasses plugged with 50 mL of shredded sponge than on post pick unplugged control carcasses.

Recently, metapopulation models for rock-paper-scissors games have been presented. Each subpopulation is represented by a node on a graph. An individual is either rock (R), scissors (S) or paper (P); it randomly migrates among subpopulations. In the present paper, we assume victory rates differ in different subpopulations. To investigate the dynamic state of each subpopulation (node), we numerically obtain the solutions of reaction-diffusion equations on the graphs with two and three nodes. In the case of homogeneous victory rates, we find each subpopulation has a periodic solution with neutral stability. However, when victory rates between subpopulations are heterogeneous, the solution approaches stable focuses. The heterogeneity of victory rates promotes the coexistence of species.

The acquisition and preservation of biological samples from rare and elusive wildlife species poses many challenges. Opportunities for collection are often limited and valuable DNA samples can degrade in unfavorable field conditions. Blood samples on preservation paper are commonly used across a wide range of taxa as a convenient and non-destructive method to obtain and store DNA. Preserved blood samples have been successfully used in a variety of genetic applications, primarily using traditional genetic markers and sequencing methods such as microsatellites and DNA barcoding. However, genomic methods are increasingly used for species of conservation concern. Genomic methods require large quantities of high-quality DNA and paper preservation methods can limit DNA availability, especially for mammals which have non-nucleated blood cells. Thus, high-yield DNA extraction methods are required to providing adequate unfragmented DNA for downstream genomic applications. Using a nested experimental design, we tested multiple DNA extraction methods and method modifications on mammalian blood stored on three common types of preservation paper. Whatman FTA classic cards with a modified extraction protocol using Qiagen QIAamp kits yielded the most DNA. We further tested the DNA extracted from FTA cards in microsatellite and genomic sequencing and found that FTA card samples were not adequate for genomic applications. For future mammalian blood collection efforts and genetic studies, researchers should weigh the need for high quantity, unfragmented DNA against the convenience of preservation paper. We recommend that researchers optimize their extraction methods and consider collecting fresh blood or tissue for genomic applications.

The aim of this study was to determine the cause of foxing on 19th century paper using omics methods, including metagenomics via high-throughput sequencing on the Illumina platform and metabolomics via high-resolution surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI-ToF-MS) imaging using the gold nanoparticle-enhanced target (AuNPET) method. Metabolomic analysis as well as ninhydrin and amido black staining of paper samples showed the presence of proteinaceous substances in areas corresponding to foxing. Products of cellulose biodegradation and microbial metabolites, including yellow-coloured pigments (2-methyl-6-phytylquinol; delta-, gamma- and beta-tocopherols; 3-hydroxy-L-kynurenine) were detected. No difference in metal-ion content was seen between areas with and without foxing. Higher degrees of biodiversity were identified within foxing stains compared to foxing-free areas. Phoma sp. and Cladonia sp. moulds and Gluconobacter and Ralstonia bacteria were predominant in DNA samples obtained from foxing stains. The presence of these microbes has never previously been linked to the phenomenon of foxing. These studies indicate that foxing is a result of a combined effect of microbial action, paper-degradation by microbes, dye production, and chemical changes occurring in paper due to oxidation of cellulose metabolites.

The aim of this study was to develop a paper-based immunosensor for cervical cancer screening, with signal amplification by multifunctionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs were functionalized with a highly specific antibody to the p16INK4a cancer biomarker. The signal was amplified using a combination of the peroxidase activity of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme-antibody conjugate and the peroxidase-like activity of the AuNPs. The immune complex of p16INK4a protein and multifunctionalized AuNPs was deposited on the nitrocellulose membrane, and a positive result was generated by catalytic oxidation of peroxidase enzyme substrate 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The entire reaction occurred on the membrane within 30 min. Evaluation in clinical samples revealed 85.2% accuracy with a kappa coefficient of 0.69. This proof of concept study demonstrates the successful development of a highly accurate, paper-based immunosensor that is easy to interpret using the naked eye and that is suitable for cervical cancer screening in low-resource settings.

The report entitled "L. Liu, D. Li, F. Bai, A relative Lempel-Ziv complexity: Application to comparing biological sequences, Chem. Phys. Lett. 530 (2012) 107-112" mentions on the powerful construction of phylogenetic trees based on Lempel-Ziv algorithm. On the other hand, the method explained in the paper does not give promising result on the data set on invasive Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean Sea. Fungi continue to be the main cause of biodeterioration in libraries. In addition to degrading paper, fungi are an important health issue for librarians and even library users. The aim of this study was to investigate the application of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO 2 ) to ancient paper contaminated with fungi. For this purpose, SCCO 2 was applied in two processes to treat samples of paper pieces: addition of 4% and 8% ethanol (w/w) at a pressure of 150 bar and temperature of 40 °C for 1 hour. Control samples (no processing) and processed samples were directly plated onto culture media to evaluate the frequency of fungal growth. Morphological and molecular analysis of the 294 samples showing mold growth on paper revealed that Aspergillus niger , Aspergillus flavus , and Eurotium amstelodami were the most frequently isolated fungi. In the control group, 47.6% of the samples were contaminated with fungi. This percentage was only 1.9% after treatment with both processes. Soil algal bioassays have been limited by their inability to evaluate several toxic endpoints because it is difficult to collect pure soil algae growing on and beneath the soil surface. This study describes the extension of a previously developed paper-disc method for analyzing soil toxicity to algae. The method can be used in conjunction with flow cytometric analysis and facilitates the assessment of previously proposed toxicity endpoints, such as the growth zone, biomass, and photosynthetic activity. We assessed the applicability of this paper-disc soil method using the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata exposed to nickel-contaminated soil; examined cell sizes, cell granularity, enzyme activity, and oxidative stress as new toxicity endpoints using flow cytometry; and identified morphological changes in green algae assayed. The results showed that, used in conjunction with flow cytometry, the extended paper-disc soil method is sufficiently sensitive to detect decreases in cell granularity in C. reinhardtii and esterase activity in P. subcapitata. The method also revealed decreases in growth zone, biomass, and electron transfer from the reaction center to the quinone pool. Collectively, the results of this study indicate that soil algal bioassays using nonspecific algae can be used to assess soil quality, to derive several toxicity endpoints for individual cells, and to evaluate previously established flow cytometric toxicity endpoints.

Migration paths of animals are rarely the same. The paths may change according to seasonal and circadian rhythms. We study the effect of temporal migration on population dynamics of rock-paper-scissors (RPS) games with mutation by using the metapopulation dynamic model with two patches. Via mutation, an individual R changes to S with rate μ. All agents move by random walk between two patches and the RPS game is performed in each patch. The migration path between two patches is switched on or off periodically. The dynamics are represented by the reaction-diffusion equations with time-dependent diffusion coefficients in diffusively coupled reactors. We obtain the solutions of time-dependent reaction-diffusion equations numerically and analytically. The time-varying migration path induces complex behavior for the RPS dynamics, depending on the frequency of the periodical path. We find that the phase transitions occur by varying mutation rate μ. The phase transition depends highly on the frequency.

This paper reviews several dimensions in terms of which electronic/Internet and paper voting can be compared (vote secrecy, verifiability, ballot box integrity, transparency and trust base). We conclude that, for many vulnerabilities of Internet voting systems, there exist related weakness in paper systems as well. The main reason why paper-based elections are perceived as more secure is historical experience. We argue that recent criticisms of Internet voting have unfairly concentrated on the associated risks and neglected the benefits. Remote electronic voting lowers the cost of election participation and provides the most secure means for absentee voting. The latter is something that is urgently required in the contemporary, increasingly mobile world. Hence, we need to give Internet voting a chance, even if it means risking unknown threats and learning by trial and error.

Background REM sleep (REMS) is considered vital for supporting well-being and normal cognition. However, it remains unclear if and how decreases in REMS impair cognitive abilities. Rare case studies of patients with REMS abolishment due to pontine lesions remain sporadic, and formal evaluation of cognitive status is lacking. In 1984, Lavie and colleagues described the case of Y.C. – a man with a pontine lesion and near-total absence of REMS who led a normal life. Here, we set out to re-evaluate this individual's REMS status 30 years after the original report, and formally assess his cognitive abilities. Methods Four whole-night polysomnographic sleep recordings were conducted to evaluate sleep architecture. Sleep scoring was performed according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines. Cranial Computed Tomography (CT) imaging was performed, as well as formal neuropsychological testing to evaluate cognitive functions. Results Y.C. averaged 4.5% of sleep time in REMS, corresponding to the 0.055 percentile of normal values for his age. Furthermore, residual REMS episodes were short and only occurred towards the end of the night. CT imaging revealed damage and metallic fragments in pons, cerebellum, and thalamus. Neuropsychological evaluation demonstrated average to high-average cognitive skills, normal memory, and motor difficulties including speech and left hand dyspraxia. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the only case where REMS loss resulting from pontine lesion was re-evaluated after many years. We find a near-total absence of REMS with no signs of significant compensation throughout adult life, along with normal cognitive status. The results provide a unique perspective on the ongoing debate regarding the functional role of REMS in supporting cognition.

There is an escalating debate over the value and validity of self-reported dietary intake as estimated by Food Frequency Questionnaires and other forms of memory-based dietary assessment methods. Proponents argue that despite limitations, memory-based methods provide valid and valuable information about consumed foods and beverages and therefore can be used to assess diet-disease relations. In fact, over the past 60 years, thousands of memory-based dietary research reports were used to inform public policy and establish the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Yet, despite this impressive history, our position is that memory-based dietary assessment methods are invalid and inadmissible for scientific research and therefore cannot be used in evidence-based policy making. Herein, we present the empirical evidence and theoretic and philosophic perspectives that render data derived from memory-based methods both fatally flawed and pseudoscientific. First, the use of memory-based methods is founded upon two inter-related logical fallacies: a category error and reification. Second, human memory and recall are not valid instruments for scientific data collection. Third, in standard epidemiologic contexts, the measurement errors associated with self-reported data are nonfalsifiable because there is no way to ascertain if the reported foods and beverages match the respondent's actual consumption. Fourth, the assignment of nutrient and energy values to self-reported intake (i.e., the pseudoquantification of anecdotal data) is impermissible and violates the foundational tenets of measurement theory. Fifth, the proxy estimates created via pseudoquantification are often physiologically implausible and have little relation to actual nutrient and energy consumption. Finally, investigators engendered a fictional discourse on the health effects of dietary sugar, salt, fat and cholesterol when they failed to cite contrary evidence or address decades of research demonstrating the fatal measurement, analytic, and inferential flaws of memory-based dietary assessment methods.
