• Data mining was performed to collect wastewater-related CECs in China over 20 years. • Spatiotemporal occurrence and risk of CECs in Chinese WWTPs were summarized. • Top 20 contaminants were prioritized to characterize ecological and health risks. • Region-specific lists of CECs are beneficial to precise managements of WWTPs. A diversity of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are present in wastewater effluent, posing potential threats to receiving waters. It is urgent for a holistic assessment of the occurrence and risk of CECs related to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) on national and regional scales. A data mining-based risk prioritization method was developed to collect the reported contaminants and their respective concentrations in municipal and industrial WWTPs and their receiving waters across China over the past 20 years. A total of 10,781 chemicals were reported in 8336 publications, of which 1037 contaminants were reported with environmental concentrations. While contaminant categories varied across WWTP types (municipal vs. industrial) and regions, pharmaceuticals and cyclic hydrocarbons were the most studied CECs. Contaminant composition in receiving water was closer to that in municipal than industrial WWTPs. Publications on legacy pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in WWTP decreased recently compared to the past, while pharmaceuticals and perfluorochemicals have received increasing attention, showing a changing concern over time. Detection frequency, concentration, removal efficiency, and toxicity data were integrated for assessing potential risks and prioritizing CECs on national and regional scales using an environmental health prioritization index (EHPi) approach. Among 666 contaminants in municipal WWTP effluent, trichlorfon and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid were with the highest EHPi scores, while 17ɑ-ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A had the highest EHPi scores among 304 contaminants in industrial WWTPs. Owing to their widespread use, pharmaceuticals have become important pollutants of the aquatic environment. Pharmaceuticals and parasites can affect the immunity, physiology and behaviour of target organisms, both singly and through interaction. In this study, we related pharmaceutical concentration, parasite infection and condition in brown trout (Salmo trutta m. fario) collected at localities upstream and downstream of a sewage treatment plant (STP). The sites were separated by a weir preventing fish migration. Pharmaceutical number and concentrations differed significantly between sites. Antibiotics and antidepressants were found at the highest concentrations at both localities. Though fish condition and overall parasite abundance did not differ between sites, there was a significant difference in parasite community composition. A higher abundance of monogenean ectoparasites, along with a lower abundance of endoparasites, was observed at the downstream locality. The adverse effect of pharmaceutical load on ecto- and endoparasitic species on brown trout was further confirmed at the individual level using multivariate analysis. Both the number and concentration of pharmaceuticals in fish tissues reflected their high incidence in the environment, confirming the ability of trout to bioaccumulate pharmaceuticals. Wastewater, aeration gas, dewatered sludge, and incineration ash and flue gas (from dewatered sludge) were collected from 9 sewage treatment plants (STPs) located in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and analyzed for seven cyclic and linear volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) namely, D3, D4, D5, D6, L3, L4, and L5. The mass loadings and distribution of VMSs in STPs were estimated based on measured concentrations in liquid, solid, and gaseous samples, including incinerated dewatered sludge. Mass loading of ΣVMS varied widely from 21 kg y−1 to 3740 kg y−1, depending on the volume of wastewater treated in each STP. Mass % of ΣVMS distributed in aeration gas was 15% and that in activated sludge was 78%. Approximately 6.6% of ΣVMS remained in the final effluent. Overall, partitioning onto the activated sludge was the dominant removal mechanism for D4, D5, and D6, whereas volatilization was also an important removal mechanism for D4. Incineration was effective to degrade VMSs in dewatered sludge, with a reduction rate of >99%. Activated carbon treatment removed >99% of VMSs from the aeration gas. In Saitama Prefecture, total emission of ΣVMS via STPs was estimated at 434 kg y−1, 86 kg y−1, and 0.065 kg y−1, to aquatic, atmospheric, and terrestrial environments, respectively, which accounted for 83%, 17%, and 0.01% of the total environmental emissions. Our results indicate that majority of VMSs in dewatered sludge can be removed by incineration and emission of VMSs through incineration ash landfill is negligible. Primary microplastics are mostly produced as part of the daily plastic product use. The emission process is often invisible but poses potential ecological hazards. Thus, primary microplastics deserve public attention. Due to China's huge population base and its rapid economic development, primary microplastics emissions are of both regional and global significance. This study is the first to establish the emission inventory of primary microplastics in mainland China. It was estimated that the primary microplastic waste from mainland China amounts to 737.29 Gg, and one-sixth of this amount entered the aquatic environment in 2015. The highest proportion of this waste was attributable to tire dust and synthetic fiber, accounting for 53.91% and 28.77% of the total respectively, in mainland China. The primary microplastics emissions mainly depend on the population, followed by the level of economic development. It was roughly estimated that 538 g of microplastics is produced by each person in China. At the grid scale, the spatial difference in the total primary microplastics emissions in mainland China primarily depends on the population density distribution and transportation network. We studied the entire life cycle of several sources of microplastics, from production to discharge into the aquatic environment. We suggested different control measures under different nodes. Increasing microplastics treatment in sewage treatment plants should be a short-term viable way to achieve some measure of reduction in their entry to the environment in mainland China. Abstract The nature and chlorine reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in reclaimed water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) are quite important for assessing the risk of wastewater reuse. Elucidating relation between DOM and its fractions characterization with different treatment processes is quite important for selection of treatment processes focusing on disinfection by-products (DBPs) control. In this study, four classical STPs in Beijing (A ∼ D) with different secondary biological treatment processes but all with flocculation and sand-filtration as advanced treatment process were selected to investigate DBPs formation potentials and DOM characterization variation during these processes and their relation. Chloroform, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) dominated among four trihalomethanes (THMs) and nine haloacetic acids (HAAs) formation potentials respectively during chlorination of both secondary and sand-filtration effluents with the order of TCAA > chloroform > DCAA. Both THMs and HAAs formation potentials were positively related with DOC percentage for the hydrophobic fractions in the DOM. The bromine incorporation in THMs was obviously higher than that in HAAs. The especially higher bromine incorporation in D STP was probably due to the higher SUVA value in this STP with SBR as secondary biological treatment process comparing to those in the other three STPs. DOC and bromide removal, SUVA decrease were important elements for selecting secondary treatment process considering DBPs control. Flocculation and sand-filtration performed not well in removing DBPs precursors especially for chloroform and DCAA except for C STP, which had higher hydrophobic fraction percentage removal and molecular weight decreasing during the advanced treatment process. FTIR analysis revealed that flocculation and sand-filtration probably removed more aliphatic structures than aromatic or COO structures. The absorption ratio of aromatic C C, COO /aliphatic CH 3 peaks in D STP was the highest among the four STPs, which was consistent with the highest bromine incorporation in this STP. A three-year river monitoring was carried out in the Bystrzyca River catchment (Poland) dominated by arable areas and wastewater treatment plants. The concentrations of potassium (K) – “a neglected nutrient” – in fresh waters were determined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and principal component analysis (PCA) showed spatial and seasonal variability in potassium concentrations. The highest potassium levels were observed in sites located directly below the outlet of the sewage treatment plant of Lublin. The impact of smaller sewage treatment plants on the water quality of the Bystrzyca River was low. Contents of K + in waters situated in areas experiencing crop and animal production were significantly lower in comparison to ‘sewage’ points. There was a differentiation of correlations between concentrations of K and NH 4 -N, NO 3 -N and PO 4 -P depending on the source of pollution. A study was conducted in which the effluent at four small to medium sized sewage treatment plants (STP) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany was monitored for three pharmaceutical compounds (carbamazepine, diclofenac, metoprolol) over a period of four years. Grab sampling and auto sampling campaigns were accomplished with respect to various weather conditions in the catchment area. Flow volumes and hydraulic retention times (HRT) from various sampling dates which provide information on processes causing emission changes were additionally taken into account. Monitoring results showed that concentration scattering in the effluent is related to HRT in the sewage treatment plants. Dilution effects following rain events in the catchment area were analysed for the three investigated substances. Short-term emission changes explained by dilution only could be well determined by the mathematical relation between discharge and concentration, and for carbamazepine to be solely determined by the dilution effects at all HRTs. For metoprolol, a clear decrease in concentrations was observed at HRTs above 80 h, and a significant contribution of biodegradation was supported by independent biodegradation tests. For three out of the four STPs, a decrease in concentrations of diclofenac was observed at hydraulic retention times above 80 h, indicating removal, whereas the relationship between concentration and HRT of the other STP could be explained by dilution only. The study shows that emissions can vary with weather conditions, hampering the assessment of emissions and estimation of concentrations in surface waters from generic removal rates only. Little is known about the occurrence of emerging environmental contaminants, such as benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), benzophenones (BzPs), and bisphenol analogues (BPs) in India. In this study, we determined the occurrence and removal of BTRs, BTHs, BzPs, and BPs in five Indian sewage treatment plants (STPs). The respective measured mean concentrations ( N = 5) in influents and effluents were 370 and 57.4 ng L −1 for BTRs, 50800 and 20200 ng L −1 for BTHs, 351 and 163 ng L −1 for BzPs, and 98.0 and 9.6 ng L −1 for BPs. Among the target chemicals analyzed, BTHs were found at elevated levels, and the measured levels were some of the highest ever reported in the literature. The mean concentrations ( N = 5) of BTRs, BTHs, BzPs, and BPs in sludge were 44.2, 51200, 124, and 200 ng g −1 dry wt, respectively. The removal efficiencies for BTRs, BTHs, BzPs, and BPs ranged as follows: 54.2–85.6%, 23.4–85.0%, 51.8–71%, and 76.0–97.0%, respectively, and were comparable to those reported for other countries. Elevated concentrations of BTHs in Indian STPs can be related to consumption of these chemicals in a wide range of products including paper, textile and rubber materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works (SCISTW and STSTW) in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at (1) determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, (2) comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and (3) characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants (STPs). Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes (from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ng/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively). It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal efficiency 94.4% ± 4.12% vs. 79.2% ± 7.48% (p < 0.05). The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples (dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively) than liquid samples (final effluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively). Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs (1.85 and 39.3 kg/year, respectively for the two STPs) being discharged into Hong Kong coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern. Industrial and municipal effluents regularly pollute water bodies and cause various toxic effects to aquatic life. Because of the diverse nature of industrial processes and domestic products, urban effluents are often tainted with various anthropogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals that may interfere with the reproductive physiology of aquatic fauna. In this study, we tested effluents from the City of Bulawayo for the presence of estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals and their effects on fish gonads and fecundity. Effluents were collected from two sewage treatment plants (STPs), which receive largest volume of industrial effluents from the City, and from a textile factory. Male and female zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) were exposed to effluents and analyzed for vitellogenin induction, gonad alterations, and fertility. Male zebrafish exposed to effluent from Thorngrove STP had significantly higher ( p ≤ 0 . 05 ) vitellogenin compared to control. Textile effluent caused adverse gonad alterations such as oocyte atresia (females) and increased proportion of spermatogonia (males) which could lead to reduced fertility. Textile effluent (5% v/v) and Thorngrove effluent also caused a decline in fertilization success of breeding groups of zebrafish. The results of this study show the potential effects of effluent pollution and the occurrence of EDCs in developing countries. This underscores the need to effectively prevent pollution of environmental water bodies from industrial and municipal sewage treatment plant effluents. Identifying the key determinants and their impacts on water quality and fish community structure is imperative to environmental assessment and ecosystem conservation. The main objectives of this study were to assess the factors driving water quality, fish assemblages, and ecological health in a temperate lotic ecosystem using a long-term (12 years) dataset. The results indicate that sewage treatment plants significantly negatively impact river water quality and are primary pollution sources. Temporal fluctuations showed that the summer monsoon adversely influenced TN and EC due to dilution effects while increasing the COD and TSS in the water. Annual variations and the Mann–Kendall test demonstrated increasing trends in COD, TN:TP ratio, and CHL-a but a decreasing trend of TP with the impoundment. Artificial barriers (weirs) in the river created more favorable algal growth conditions due to increased water residence time. COD and TSS levels in the river were significantly affected by soil erosion. The environmental disturbance measures index indicated that all sites were severely degraded. Fish composition analysis suggested that exotic fish species such as, Lepomis macrochirus and Micropterus salmoides, dominated the community structure and negatively impacted native species after the installation of weirs. Our findings indicate that fish guilds and the IBI model are controlled by nutrient enrichment, organic matter, algal production, and land use/land cover. Water quality governs the biological health of the river. Overall, evaluation of the river's ecological health based on the multi-metric WPI and the IBI revealed that the river has a "poor" to "very poor" ecological status. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) as a carrier of microplastics (MPs) have received considerable attention worldwide recently. In India, the majority of studies on MPs have been conducted in sediments, riverine, and marine systems, while knowledge on MPs occurrence in STPs is scarce. Henceforth, this work evaluated the presence of MPs in sewage and sludge in a hybrid growth, secondary treatment-based STP system. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy methods were used to examine the abundance of MPs in raw sewage, effluent from different treatment units of the STP, and sludge samples. A total number of MPs of 201 ± 19 (2021) and 197 ± 22 (2022) were detected in the studied STP system. Results showed that MPs ranged between 64.3 ± 4.89–47.66 ± 4.71 n/L (sewage) and 1.14 ± 0.30–1.38 ± 0.65 n/g (sludge) with the overall removal efficacy of the studied STP estimated to be around 80%. Fragments and fibers were predominant among all shapes and particles mostly belonged to sizes <50 μm and <50 μm–250 μm in sewage and sludge, respectively. In total, seven polymers were identified of which low-density polyethylene (LDPE) constituted the highest proportion in sewage (26%–31%) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) contributed the highest in the sludge (22%–27%). Moreover, MPs control measures have been discussed based on the findings of this study to restrict MPs re-entry into the environment via treated effluent and sludge. A comprehensive examination of nitrosamines was conducted in a water system, which included sewage treatment plants (STPs), river water, and seawater to understand their characteristic occurrence and fates in whole real water system. The concentrations of nitrosamines were highest in the STP influent (1440–29,100 ng/L), followed by the river water (26.0–5180 ng/L), the STP effluent (9.58–310 ng/L), and seawater (44.2–155 ng/L). The samples were especially affected by proximity to the industrial zone and the samples collected near industrial complex had much higher levels than others with different distribution patterns. In the STPs, nitrosamines were mostly eliminated during biological treatment processes (86.7–95.0%), while they were formed through chlorination processes (− 59.6 to − 27.7%), which is consistent with previous surveys. The primary clarifier showed insignificant elimination tendencies (5.6–28.2%). Although removal by ultraviolet light was effective (73.2–94.1%), more surveys may be needed because of conflicting results in other studies. Despite the high consumption of pharmaceuticals, mass loading and removal of these compounds in sewage treatment plants (STPs) in India have not been investigated. In this study, 43 pharmaceuticals and personal care products as well as 13 of their metabolites were analyzed in five domestic STPs (wastewater influent, effluent, and sludge) and in raw domestic sewage collected in open sewerage channels in residential areas in India. The mean concentrations of amphetamine in two of the five STPs (mean: 4300 ng/L and 4720 ng/L) were the highest ever reported for wastewater influents, globally. Among artificial sweeteners, saccharin was the most abundant compound in influents (mean: 303,000 ng/L, df: 100%), followed by cyclamate [3460 ng/L, detection frequency (df): 75%] and sucralose (1460 ng/L, df: 100%). Elevated mean concentrations of an antimicrobial (triclocarban = 6180 ng/L), analgesic (ibuprofen = 2320 ng/L), antihypertensive (atenolol = 3180 ng/L), illicit drug (amphetamine = 984 ng/L), and saccharin (419,000 ng/L) were found in the Cooum River in Chennai. The median removal efficiencies of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) ranged from 5% (norcocaine) to 100% (triclosan) for the five STPs. On the basis of the concentrations measured in influents, the mass loadings of PPCPs were estimated to range from 0.1 (norquetiapine) to 77,800 (saccharin) mg/d/1000 people. An estimated 2.55 kg of triclocarban, 3.24 kg of carbamazepine, 6.93 kg of amphetamine, and 252 kg of saccharin were discharged from a typical STP with an average flow rate of 20.7 million liters per day (serving a population of 325,000) in India. A Ni–Co bimetallic catalyst supported on lanthana promoted alumina was prepared by excess volume solution method. The catalyst was characterised by XRD, N 2 adsorption isotherms, XRF, TPO, SEM and XPS. The catalyst was tested in a simulated biogas stream with a CH 4 :CO 2 1:1, usually presented after anaerobic digestion in sewage treatment plants, and in a simulated air gasification stream containing toluene as a tar model compound. The catalyst was submitted to catalytic activity vs. temperature tests in order to determine the optimum temperature to maximize conversion and selectivity in both processes. At 700 °C, equilibrium conversion in the case of biogas conversion was achieved, and total toluene and methane conversion in gasification stream was reached, maximizing hydrogen production with the lack of complex tar by-products formation. Long-term reaction experiments up to 100 h demonstrated the stability of catalyst performance. Post-reaction characterisation of catalytic samples by SEM-EDX and XPS revealed the lack of coke deposits on the catalyst, responsible of catalyst deactivation in the most of catalytic systems reported in the literature. At the light of the results obtained, the catalyst developed could be applied to produce renewable hydrogen from anaerobic digestion units of sewage plants, through the energy valorisation of biogas stream and sludge gasification. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective simultaneous electrochemical method to monitor the emerging organic contaminants tartrazine (TRT), dexamethasone (DMZ) and diclofenac (DCL) in sewage treatment plants was developed. The sensing was based on electroreduction of TRT (−0.22 V), DMZ (−0.93 V) and DCL (−1.12 V) on hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE), using citrate buffer pH 2.5 as electrolyte. The fast electrodic kinetics of these chemicals provided improvements on selectivity at high scan rates. The unique electrochemical properties of HMDE were associated to analytical performance of the square-wave voltammetry to quantify trace concentrations of TRT, DMZ and DCL, with detection limits ranging from 2.78 × 10 −8 to 1.48 × 10 −7 mol L −1 . After wastewater treatment by using solid-phase extraction, the proposed procedure was successfully applied for the direct quantification of the studied compounds with high precision, accuracy and stability of the measurements, even in the presence of other electroactive contaminants. India has 18% of the world's population, 1.15 billion people, but access to only 4% of world's fresh water resources. In the recent past, the dependency of Indian agriculture on ground water resources has increased upto an enormous extent due to several factors including increased demand of food, erratic behavior of monsoon, developmental pressure of various allied sectors etc . Currently, the available 70% of water resources in India being used to fulfill the water demand for agriculture and the 80% of domestic water supplies come from groundwater which led to rapidly declining groundwater tables in most of the states in India and has found no longer sustainable. Present study has primarily highlights the need of the Indian conditions for treatment and reuse of wastewater which happens to be the main cause for pollution of water resources in India. In this study efforts were made for assessment the potential of model sewage fed aquaculture system of capacity 8 MLD in Karnal, India for wastewater treatment, reuse and resource recovery during the treatment process. The in-depth evaluation study were conducted for integrated assessment of STP in association with health, environment, society, and institutions aspects as well as quality of treated effluent subjected for reuse in irrigation. The Economic analysis of the model sewage-fed aquaculture system shows that there was an annual profit of INR 8-10 lakhs through selling of fish in local market as well as ample amount of revenue generated through selling of treated effluent to the farmers. Also, the irrigation with treated wastewater able to save the fertilizer upto 50 kg of Urea and 50 kg of diammonium phosphate during cultivation of one acre of crop annually. The system was found good for removal of physic-chemical pollutants and also found very effective in removal of bacteriological pollutants. We evaluated the suitability of pulsed electric field (PEF) technology as a new disinfection option in the sewage treatment plants (STPs) that can inactivate antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It was shown that PEF applied disinfection could inactivate not only vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), but also vanA resistance gene. Cultivable VRE could be effectively inactivated by PEF applied disinfection, and were reduced to below the detection limit (log reduction value of VRE > 5 log). Although the vanA also showed a reduction of more than 4 log, it remained in the order of 105 copies/mL, suggesting that ARGs are more difficult to be inactivated than ARB in PEF applied disinfection. Among parameters in each applying condition verified in this study, the initial voltage was found to be the most important for inactivation of ARB and ARGs. Furthermore, frequency was a parameter that affects the increase or decrease of the duration time, and it was suggested that the treatment time could be shortened by increasing the frequency. Our results strongly suggested that PEF applied disinfection may be a new disinfection technology option for STPs that contributes to the control of ARB and ARGs contamination in the aquatic environments. Abstract: The cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of 11 organic fractions from sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents were tested using the RTG-2 rainbow trout permanent cell line. An automated in vitro micronucleus assay developed for RTG-2 cells was used to test the genotoxicity, whereas neutral red uptake, kenacid blue protein assay and ATP content were used to evaluate cytotoxicity. The induction of micronuclei (MN) and alterations in the cell cycle were analysed in these cells by flow cytometry after exposure to the organic fractions for 72 h. More than half of the organic extracts tested demonstrated a significant increase in the MN frequency, thus indicating that most of them can be considered to be genotoxic. The extracts were analysed chemically by GC/MS. Although the most frequently detected compounds in the effluents were bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), as well as other possible mutagens, the concentrations cannot explain the genotoxicity of the individual chemicals, thereby suggesting a mixture effect. The results obtained support the need to apply effect-based tests to monitor complex mixtures as the most accurate means of assessing the genotoxicity of environmental samples. Abstract: In Germany, protozoal parasites are detected frequently in surface waters. This study aims to assess the parasitological pollution in a river course and two of its tributaries under regular weather conditions. Cryptosporidium was detected in 67% of all samples. The median concentration was 4oocysts/100l. Giardia lamblia were detected in 90% of the samples. The median concentration of G. lamblia was 22 cysts/100l and increased significantly following the river course. A statistically significant correlation was found between both parasites and the faecal indicators Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli. The intermittent occurrence of Cryptosporidium in the streams investigated was ascribed primarily to diffuse pollution, particularly during rainfall events. The relatively frequent detection of G. lamblia derived mainly from sewage treatment plants. The pathogen concentrations observed present a relevant public health risk as the river is used for recreational activities and agricultural purposes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The fate of 14 antidepressants along with their respective N-desmethyl metabolites and the anticonvulsive drug carbamazepine (CBZ) was studied in 5 different sewage treatment plants (STPs) across Canada. Using two validated LC-MS/MS analytical methods, the concentrations of the different compounds were determined in raw influent, final effluent and treated biosolids samples. Out of the 15 compounds investigated, 13 were positively detected in most 24-h composite raw influent samples. Analysis showed that venlafaxine (VEN), its metabolite O-desmethylvenlafaxine (DVEN), citalopram (CIT), and CBZ were detected at the highest concentrations in raw influent (up to 4.3 μg L−1 for DVEN). Cumulated results showed strong evidence that primary treatment and trickling filter/solids contact has limited capacity to remove antidepressants from sewage, while activated sludge, biological aerated filter, and biological nutrient removal processes yielded moderate results (mean removal rates: 30%). The more recalcitrant compounds to be eliminated from secondary STPs were VEN, DVEN and CBZ with mean removal rates close to 12%. Parent compounds were removed to a greater degree than their metabolites. The highest mean concentrations in treated biosolids samples were found for CIT (1033 ng g−1), amitriptyline (768 ng g−1), and VEN (833 ng g−1). Experimental sorption coefficients (K d ) were also determined. The lowest K d values were obtained with VEN, DVEN, and CBZ (67–490 L kg−1). Sorption of these compounds on solids was assumed negligible (log K d  ≤ 2). Abstract: Occurrence, removal, consumption and environmental risks of sixteen antibiotics were investigated in several sewage treatment plants (STPs) featuring different treatment levels in Hong Kong, China. Cefalexin, ofloxacin and erythromycin-H2O were predominant with concentrations of 1020–5640, 142–7900 and 243–4740ng/L in influent, respectively; their mass loads were comparable to levels reported in urban regions in China and were at the high end of the range reported for western countries. The target antibiotics behaved differently depending on the treatment level employed at the STPs and relatively higher removal efficiencies (>70%) were observed for cefalexin, cefotaxime, amoxicillin, sulfamethoxazole and chloramphenicol during secondary treatment. ß-lactams were especially susceptible to removal via the activated sludge process while macrolides were recalcitrant (<20%) in the dissolved phase. Two fluoroquinolones, ofloxacin (4%) and norfloxacin (52%), differed greatly in their removal efficiencies, probably because of disparities in their pKa values which resulted in different sorption behaviour in sludge. Overall antibiotic consumption in Hong Kong was back-calculated based on influent mass flows and compared with available prescription and usage data. This model was verified by a good approximation of 82% and 141% to the predicted consumption of total ofloxacin, but a less accurate estimate was obtained for erythromycin usage. Risk assessment indicated that algae are susceptible to the environmental concentrations of amoxicillin as well as the mixture of the nine detected antibiotics in receiving surface waters. Abstract: The occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals such as estrogens in raw urban sewage is well documented. By contrast, the presence of other steroidal activities in wastewater has been poorly studied, although they can cause undesirable biological responses in the environment. In this work, extracts of raw wastewater were tested for agonist and antagonist activities on estrogen, androgen, progesterone, mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors. We detected strong estrogenic activities that correlated well with the concentration of natural estrogens (estrone, estriol and 17β-estradiol) measured by chemical analysis. We also measured strong androgenic activities which were not due to estrogen receptor ligands based on the use of recombinant estrogen receptor α affinity columns. Several molecules with androgenic activities were identified in wastewater samples, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and epiandrosterone being the most abundant. However, they explain only a small part of the detected androgenic activity, as indicated by the comparison of the detected biological responses with the results of the targeted chemical analysis. Finally, we found that our samples also contained strong antagonist activities on progesterone, glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors. Very interestingly, we identified pregnenolone (the precursor to all steroid hormones in humans) as a major endocrine disrupting chemical which accounts for most of the anti-mineralocorticoid activities present in raw wastewater. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the occurrence of androgen agonists as well as other steroid receptor antagonists such as pregnenolone in raw wastewater. Abstract: The mass flows and removal of 20 antibiotics of seven classes in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of Hong Kong were investigated in different seasons of a whole year, using bihourly 24h flow proportional composite samples. Antibiotics were detected at concentrations of 3.2–1718, 1.3–1176 and 1.1–233ngL−1 in influents, secondary and disinfection effluents. Total daily discharges of all the detected antibiotics from effluents of Shatin and Stanley WWTPs were 470–710 and 3.0–5.2gd−1, respectively. Ampicillin, cefalexin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, chlortetracycline and vancomycin were effectively (52–100%) eliminated by activated sludge process while ampicillin and cefalexin were effectively (91–99%) eliminated by disinfection. Bihourly variation analysis showed that concentrations of the major antibiotics in influents varied more significantly in Stanley WWTP which served small communities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Tens of thousands of chemicals are currently marketed worldwide, but only a small number of these compounds has been measured in effluents or the environment to date. The need for screening methodologies to select candidates for environmental monitoring is therefore significant. To meet this need, the Swedish Chemicals Agency developed the Exposure Index (EI), a model for ranking emissions to a number of environmental matrices based on chemical quantity used and use pattern. Here we evaluate the EI. Data on measured concentrations of organic chemicals in sewage treatment plants, one of the recipients considered in the EI model, were compiled from the literature, and the correlation between predicted emission levels and observed concentrations was assessed by linear regression analysis. The adequacy of the parameters employed in the EI was further explored by calibration of the model to measured concentrations. The EI was found to be of limited use for ranking contaminant levels in STPs; the r 2 values for the regressions between predicted and observed values ranged from 0.02 (p =0.243) to 0.14 (p =0.007) depending on the dataset. The calibrated version of the model produced only slightly better predictions although it was fitted to the experimental data. However, the model is a valuable first step in developing a high throughput screening tool for organic contaminants, and there is potential for improving the EI algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: To investigate the occurrence and fate of ritalinic acid – the main human metabolite of the psychostimulant drug methylphenidate – in the aquatic environment, a HPLC–electrospray–MS/MS method for the quantification of ritalinic acid in wastewater, surface water and bank filtrate was developed. Carbamazepine known as very stable in the aquatic environment was analyzed as anthropogenic marker in parallel. Furthermore, the removal of ritalinic acid was studied in a sewage treatment plant using an activated sludge system during a field study and in lab-scale plants. In good agreement between lab-scale and field studies a low removal rate of 13% and 23%, respectively, was determined. As a consequence, the concentration of ritalinic acid in the wastewater effluents were in the range of <50–170ngL−1 which corresponds to a mean specific load per capita of 17.7μgd−1. Ritalinic acid has further been detected in German rivers at concentrations of 4–23ngL−1 and in bank filtrate samples in 100–850m distance from the river up to 5ngL−1 demonstrating the widespread occurrence of this stable metabolite in the aquatic environment. Abstract: Carbonyl reductase/20β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (CR/20β-HSD) serves both as a key enzyme in the gonadal synthesis of maturing-inducing hormone in salmonids, and as an enzyme protecting against certain reactive oxygen species. We have previously shown that mRNA of the hepatic CR/20β-HSD B isoform is increased in rainbow trout caged downstream from a Swedish sewage treatment plant. Here, we report an increase of both the A as well as B form in fish kept downstream from a second sewage treatment plant. The two mRNAs were also induced in fish hepatoma cells in vitro after exposure to effluent extract. This indicates that the effects observed in vivo could be a direct effect on the liver, i.e. the mRNA induction does not require a signal from any other organ. When fish were exposed in vivo to several effluents treated with more advanced methods (ozone, moving bed biofilm reactor or membrane bioreactor) the expression of hepatic mRNA CR/20β-HSD A and B was significantly reduced. Their abundance did not parallel the reduction of estrogen-responsive transcripts, in agreement with our previous observations that ethinylestradiol is not a potent inducer. Treatment with norethisterone, methyltestosterone or hydrocortisone in vivo did not induce the hepatic CR/20β-HSD A and B mRNA expression. In contrast, both isoforms were markedly induced by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist β-naphthoflavone as well as by the pro-oxidant herbicide paraquat. We hypothesize that the induction of CR/20β-HSD A and B by sewage effluents could be due to anthropogenic contaminants stimulating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and/or causing oxidative stress. Abstract: The effects of treatment processes on estrogenicity were evaluated by examining estradiol equivalent (EEQ) concentrations in influents and effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) located along Yeongsan and Seomjin rivers in Korea. The occurrence and distribution of estrogenic chemicals were also estimated for surface water in Korea and compared with seven other Asian countries including Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Target compounds were nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), bisphenol A (BPA), estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) and genistein (Gen). Water samples were pretreated and analyzed by liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The results showed that the treatment processes of Korean STPs were sufficient to reduce the estrogenic activity of municipal wastewater. The concentrations of phenolic xenoestrogens (i.e., NP, OP and BPA) in samples of Yeongsan and Seomjin rivers were smaller than those reported by previous studies in Korea. In most samples taken from the seven Asian countries, the presence of E2 and EE2 was a major contributor toward estrogenic activity. The EEQ concentrations in surface water samples of the seven Asian countries were at a higher level in comparison to that reported in European countries, America and Japan. However, further studies with more sampling frequencies and sampling areas should be carried out for better evaluation of the occurrence and distribution of estrogenic compounds in these Asian countries. Abstract: Nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPnEO) and nonylphenol (NP) have provoked much environmental concern because of their weak estrogenic activities. We monitored NPnEO and their metabolites in rivers in Tianjin and in a sewage treatment plant of Tianjin monthly for 1year. The total concentrations of NPnEO and NP in influent, up to 47.2μgL−1 in August, were higher in summer than in other seasons. During the 12months survey, NP was accumulated in most effluent samples with a mean value of 2.92μgL−1. The average concentrations of nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO) and nonylphenol triethoxylate (NP3EO) in effluents were 1.26, 1.53 and 1.06μgL−1, which corresponds to percent removals of 75%, 60% and 62%, respectively. In rivers of Tianjin, NP2EO and nonylphenoxyethoxy acetic acid (NP2EC) exhibited the highest concentrations in the surface water, up to 1.38 and 9.59μgL−1, respectively. The pollution of nonylphenolic substances in sediments of Haihe River belongs to moderate or severe level in the world, with the total concentration between 4.1 and 9.9μgg−1, dry weight. Abstract: We investigated the presence and fate of 16 antibiotics belonging to seven groups (β-lactams, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, trimethoprim and amphenicols) in effluents of sewage plants and receiving waters in Hong Kong. Cefalexin, amoxicillin, ofloxacin and erythromycin–H2O were ubiquitous in sea water throughout Victoria Harbour, indicating continuous discharge to the environment. This is one of the few studies reporting the frequent occurrence of cefalexin and amoxicillin in sewage effluents and sea water (170–5070 and 64–1670ng/L in sewage; 6.1–493 and 0.64–76ng/L in sea water, respectively). Mass flows from seven sewage plants discharged an estimated total of 14.4kg/day to the Harbour. Typhoon shelters also appeared to play an important role as sources of antibiotics, as evidenced by elevated concentrations within their boundaries. Abstract: A nationwide survey of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in both raw and finished water samples from drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in Japan was conducted. NDMA was analyzed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). NDMA was detected in 15 of 31 raw water samples collected in the summer at concentrations up to 2.6 ng/L, and in 9 of 28 raw water samples collected in winter at concentrations up to 4.3 ng/L. The NDMA concentrations were higher in raw water samples collected from treatment plants with catchment areas that have high population densities. The NDMA concentrations were higher in river water samples collected from the east and west of Japan than in those collected from other areas. NDMA was detected in 10 of 31 finished samples collected in summer at reduced concentrations of up to 2.2 ng/L, while 5 of 28 finished samples collected in winter showed NDMA concentrations up to 10 ng/L. The highest NDMA levels were detected in finished water samples collected from the Yodo River basin DWTP, which uses ozonation. Furthermore, evaluation of the process water produced at six advanced water treatment plants was conducted. Influent from the Yodo River indicated that the NDMA concentration increased during ozonation to as high as 20 ng/L, and then decreased with subsequent biological activated carbon treatment. Although various single-concentration measurements of the pharmaceutical diclofenac are available in literature, detailed information on the mass flux in the aquatic environment is often missing. Therefore, the overall load of diclofenac was obtained by recording each concentration in nine effluents of sewage treatment plants (STP) and at three river sites located in the area of the river Main (Germany) over a time period of six weeks. In STP effluents, concentrations of up to 2200 ng/L were obtained. In combination with flow rates and connected population an average specific load per capita and day of 0.28 mg (+/−0.11 mg) diclofenac reaches the receiving water course. This average specific load per capita is an expressive parameter to assess main diclofenac exposure to the aquatic environment avoiding uncertainties of estimated data commonly used in exposure assessment. Accordingly, predicted environmental concentrations (PEC) of 140 ng/L for a realistic worst case scenario and 2 to 52 ng/L based on water quality modeling were derived. Since concentrations of up to 140 ng/L were observed in surface water, the obtained PEC is in perfect agreement with measured concentrations. Hence, comparing the PEC with published predicted no effect concentrations (PNEC), chronic adverse effects in fish populations may occur. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Wastewater has proved to be a significant source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment. Seventeen congeners from tri- to deca-BDEs were determined to characterize the occurrence, fate, and transport of PBDEs in two sewage treatment plants in the Pearl River Delta, South China. The PBDE concentrations varied substantially from 13.3 to 2496.4 ng L−1 in the raw wastewater, depending on the wastewater types and contents of the suspended particulate matter (SPM). The concentrations declined to 0.9 to 4.4 ng L−1 in the treated effluent and were closely associated with SPM contents. BDE-209 was the predominant congener in the wastewater and sewage sludge. Most of PBDEs might have ended up in the sewage sludge, with <4.7% being discharged with the treated effluent. The results revealed that PBDEs were not significantly degraded by biological treatment and chlorination in the STPs. An annual release of PBDEs was estimated at 2280 kg/year through wastewater from the Pearl River Delta. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The partitioning of alkylphenols in the dissolved and particulate matter of influents, effluents, accumulation onto sludge and the impact of sewage treatment plant upon receiving waters was studied along the Ter River basin (Catalonia, NE Spain). A solid-phase extraction or pressurized liquid extraction followed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry was developed and permitted to determine target compounds with high efficiency in waters, particulate material and sludge. Nonylphenol mono- and diethoxylate, nonylphenol and octylphenol partitioned preferably upon particulate matter and sludge, whereas long chain NPE3–15O prevailed in the dissolved phase and was released by effluents. Within the treatment process, a net accumulation of alkylphenols in sludge was found, producing up to 148g/t/month. The removal efficiency of alkylphenols was of 37–90% and depended on the treatment. Assessment on the fate of these contaminants within STPs is discussed in terms of flow rates, biological oxygen demand and tons of sludge produced. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The potential risks associated with antibiotics present in the Swedish environment were assessed using concentrations found in hospital effluent, and sewage treatment waters and sludge, in combination with data on their environmental effects obtained from the literature. For the aqueous environment, measured environmental concentrations and effect/no observed effect concentration ratios were much lower than one in most cases. The only exceptions, where concentrations of the investigated substances were high enough to pose potential risks, were the concentrations of the two fluoroquinolones, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, in the hospital effluent. Treating digested dewatered sludge by heat did not fully eliminate norfloxacin or ciprofloxacin, thus pellets may still contain high amounts of these substances (sub to low mgkg−1 dw). In leaching tests less than 1% of the amounts of these fluoroquinolones in the sludge or pellets reached the aqueous phase, indicating that their mobility is limited if sludge is used to fertilize soil. Abstract: Analytical method was developed which allowed for the detection of four beta blockers (acebutolol, atenolol, metoprolol and sotalol), an antiepileptic drug (carbamazepine) and three fluoroquinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and norfloxacin) with a single pre-treatment and chromatographic method. The method included an isolation and concentration procedure using solid phase extraction, a separation step using high performance liquid chromatography and a detection procedure applying triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, which was working in the multiple reaction monitoring mode. The method was validated for ground, surface and sewage influent and effluent waters. Due to ion suppression in the electrospray source, the signals monitored for the analytes were less intense in sewage waters compared to ground and surface waters. The limits of quantification were as low as 1ngL−1 in ground water and 3.5ngL−1 in sewage influent. The method was successfully applied to the determination of the target compounds in raw and treated sewages of three treatment plants in Finland and in their recipient rivers. The results showed that many of the studied compounds pose a moderate to high persistency in sewage treatment as well as in the recipient rivers. The analytical protocol presented may be used for more in-depth studies on the occurrence and fate of these commonly used pharmaceuticals in the sewage treatment plants and in the aquatic environment. Abstract: Exogenous chemicals that interfere with natural hormonal functions are considered endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Estradiol (17β-estradiol or E2) is the most potent of all xenoestrogens. Induction of vitellogenin (VTG) production in male fish occurs at E2 concentrations as low as 1ngl-1. E2 reaches aquatic systems mainly through sewage and animal waste disposal. Surface water samples from ponds, rivers (Wicomico, Manokin and Pocomoke), sewage treatment plants (STPs), and coastal bays (Assawoman, Monie, Chincoteague, and Tangier Sound – Chesapeake Bay) on the Eastern Shore of Maryland were analyzed for E2 using enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA). E2 concentrations in river waters varied between 1.9 and 6.0ngl-1. Highest E2 concentrations in river waters were observed immediately downstream of STPs. Measurements of two polycyclic musk fragrances HHCB (galaxolide) and AHTN (tonalide) were measured in wastewater and sludge of a German sewage treatment plant. The metabolite HHCB–lactone was identified and quantified in the same plant. The influent concentrations were about 1900ng/l HHCB and 580ng/l AHTN, while in the sludge about 3000ng/g HHCB and 1500ng/g AHTN were analysed. About 35% of both compounds passed through the plant unaltered and were discharged to the river. Slightly more HHCB was sorbed to the sludge than was discharged; while for AHTN about twice as much was sorbed to the sludge than was discharged. Organophosphates used as flame retardants, plasticisers and lubricants such as tris-(2-chloro-, 1-methyl-ethyl)-phosphate (TCPP), tris-(2-chloroethyl)-phosphate (TCEP) or tris-(2-chloro-, 1-chloromethyl-ethyl)-phosphate (TDCP), tri-n-butylphosphate (TnBP), tri-iso-butylphosphate (TiBP), triphenylphosphate (TPP) and tris-(butoxyethyl)-phosphate (TBEP) have been analysed in several rivers and sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents. The concentrations in the River Ruhr are 20–200 ng/l TCPP, 13–130 ng/l TCEP, about 50 ng/l TDCP, 10–200 ng/l TBEP and up to 40 ng/l TPP. The STP effluents exhibit concentrations up to 400 ng/l TCPP, 130 ng/l TCEP, about 120 ng/l TDCP and 500 ng/l TBEP, respectively. Concern about the health of aquatic fauna living in waters containing biologically active levels of estrogenic compounds is particularly focused on the effects on their reproductive success. To that end, carp, Cyprinus carpio, a feral fish living in warm waters of Southern Europe (NE Spain), were selected for signs of estrogenicity. The study area covered two tributaries (the Anoia and the Cardener) of the Llobregat River both known to be polluted by estrogenic compounds. The estrogenicity in the carp was measured as vitellogenin (VTG) presence in males and alterations in VTG levels in females, over a 6-month period, embracing both the pre- and post-spawning seasons. VTG content was measured in both the plasma and liver, the latter being the organ that synthesizes it. Also, hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity was recorded, as interactions of xenoestrogens and oestradiol have been reported to affect this enzymatic activity. The estrogenicity of these rivers was more evident in the Anoia at the location downstream from the sewage treatment plant (STP), by elevated levels of VTG in males and by the presence of some intersex individuals. In the Cardener, no intersex fish were found and male plasmatic VTG was not so highly elevated. However presence of hepatic VTG, in up to 54% of the male fish analyzed, proved exposure to xenoestrogens. In females, VTG fluctuated according to the biological cycle with a plasmatic peak in May and an earlier maximal in the liver. However, this pattern was altered in the locations with higher xenoestrogens presence. EROD activity showed differences between sexes, with higher activity in males than females, as well as site-related differences (up to one order of magnitude) in the same river. These differences were even greater than those detected between rivers. A seasonal trend was also seen in EROD activity with higher induction towards the summer in both males and females. Aim of this study was to provide an up-to-date assessment of the heavy metals and antibiotics in reclaimed water in Chengdu, China. 3 sewage treatment plants (STPs) and 1 constructed wetland (CW) were first taken as the research objects. The total concentration and reduction change rule of heavy metals and antibiotics in the process of reclaimed water production were investigated. The possible health risks to ecological environment and human body were evaluated. For the treatment process, the Cyclic Activated Sludge System (CASS) used in A sewage treatment plant (STP A) had the best removal effect for heavy metals. When the proportion of industrial wastewater in the influent was relatively high, the heavy metal pollution level was alert. Ofloxacin (OFX) and roxithromycin (ROX) were the most abundant antibiotics in reclaimed water. After being removed by the sewage treatment system, OFX concentrations changed, but several of them remained in reclaimed water. Negative removal of ROX occurred. This is because macrolides were wrapped in human feces, whose concentration increased as feces disperse and hydrolyze. Compared with CASS (20.02%) and Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic process (A2/O 34.16%), the average removal rate of antibiotics from the A2/O accompanied by Membrane Bio-Reactor (71.1%) and CW (54.95%) was higher. When the proportion of domestic sewage in wastewater was high, antibiotics in reclaimed water had higher ecological risk. OFX had the highest ecological risk for non-target aquatic organisms. It was assessed that the heavy metals and antibiotics studied did not pose a carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic risk to human health. • Conventional treatment processes have negative removal on roxithromycin. • Constructed wetland and A2/O followed by MBR, have high efficiency for antibiotic removal. • When the proportion of domestic sewage in influent increases, antibiotics have significant ecological risks. • Arsenic is the pollutant that should be taken seriously in reclaimed water, because it has the highest percentage for carcinogenic or nor-carcinogenic risk. To evaluate the environmental impact of receiving water from the Qinghe River sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents in Beijing, we collected sediments and Bellamya aeruginosa (Up-site, Discharge-site, and Down-site) both in 2017 and 2018 and analyzed the samples via chemical analysis, biological responses and transcriptomics. In two years of data, our biological results showed that AChE activities presented different degrees of influence on B. aeruginosa captured at sampling points of the STP compared to control sites (P < 0.05). Additionally, indicators of the antioxidant system (e.g., SOD, CAT, GST, EROD activity) and MDA content were significantly increased in the whole tissue at the Up-site of the STP. Integration of the assessed biomarkers using the integrated biomarker response (IBR) index ranked the environmental impact at sites as Up-site > Discharge-site > Down-site. In terms of the transcriptome data, B. aeruginosa collected from the Discharge-site of the STP showed greater transcriptomic response than it did from all other sites. KEGG pathway analysis revealed that sewage significantly altered the expression of genes involved in xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, glutathione metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, citrate (TCA) cycle, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, apoptotic and Parkinson's disease. The concentrations of 34 organic pollutants (17 PAHs, 10 PAEs, 7 EDCs) were measured. The chemical concentrations of pollutants decreased from Up-site to Down-site and were well correlated with enzyme activity, IBR, and transcriptomic results. Our results demonstrated that the combined use of chemical analysis, biological responses and transcriptome data is necessary to validate the efficacy of a battery of biomarkers chosen to detect environmental stress due to pollution.
