Pandemics have the potential to be considered traumatic event, increasing the risk of developing post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in HealthCare Workers (HCW). However, few longitudinal studies have evaluated the impact of prolonged exposure to the risk imposed by COVID-19. Our aim was to identify subgroups of HCW with profiles of PTSS, how this profile changed during the pandemic and which variables were related to these changes. We evaluated the levels of PTSS and psychological distress in a Brazilian HealthCare Workers' sample (n = 1398) in three waves of assessment: from May to June 2020 (Wave 1), December 2020 to February 2021 (Wave 2) and May to August 2021 (Wave 3), using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify subgroups with different profiles of symptms, and then, Latent Transition Analysis (LTA) was applied to examine changes in symptom profiles over time, including gender, psychiatric diagnosis history, and pandemic-related fears as covariates. two profiles were identified: high-PTSS profile (Wave 1–23%; Wave 2–64% and Wave 3–73%) and a low-PTSS (Wave 1–77%; Wave 2–36% and Wave 3–27%). Being female, fear of contamination, and fearing financial problems were strong predictors of changes in the profile. In addition, the participants had a high probability of being in the high-PTSS in the long run. These results suggests that targeted interventions can mitigate the impact of pandemic. Background: After >2 years of the Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is well established how sleep symptoms are rising, especially among healthcare workers (HCW). The aim of this study is to evaluate what features are associated with sleep disturbances in the HCW population.Methods: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of social and clinical variables associated with sleep problems and insomnia incidence in HCW in a large, national-level cohort. The measurement of sleep problems was assessed by self-report using Jenkins Sleep Scale (JSS). A multivariate analysis was used in the cross-sectional design and generalized linear models were used in the longitudinal design.Results: 10,467 HCW were analyzed in the cross-sectional analysis, 3313 participants were analyzed in the three timepoints of the study. Sex, previously diagnosed mental illness and frontline work with COVID-19 were associated with higher scores in JSS in the univariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, only previous diagnosis of mental illness was related with sleep difficulties, especially previously diagnosed insomnia. The longitudinal analysis concluded that previous diagnosis of mental illnesses was associated with higher levels of insomnia development (OR = 11.62). The self-reported disorders found to be major risk factors were addiction (OR = 7.69), generalized anxiety disorder (OR = 3.67), social anxiety (OR = 2.21) and bipolar disorder (OR = 2.21).Limitations: Attrition bias.Conclusions: Previous diagnosis of mental illness was strongly related to insomnia development in HCW during the COVID-19 pandemic. The functional role of the primary motor cortex (M1) in the production of movement parameters, such as length, direction and force, is well known; however, whether M1 is associated with the parametric adjustments in the absolute timing dimension of the task remains unknown. Previous studies have not applied tasks and analyses that could separate the absolute (variant) and relative (invariant) dimensions. We applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to M1 before motor practice to facilitate motor learning. A sequential key-pressing task was practiced with two goals: learning the relative timing dimension and learning the absolute timing dimension. All effects of the stimulation of M1 were observed only in the absolute dimension of the task. Mainly, the stimulation was associated with better performance in the transfer test in the absolute dimension. Taken together, our results indicate that M1 is an important area for learning the absolute timing dimension of a motor sequence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with cognitive, social, and academic impairment. Neurotrophins, particularly brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), have been implicated in the pathophysiology of ADHD and response to stimulant treatment. This review aims to investigate the relationship between BDNF levels in ADHD before and after treatment with stimulants in childhood. This systematic review followed PRISMA-P guidelines and included 19 studies from PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Capes Periodic, and Lilacs databases. The studies were evaluated for risk of bias and level of evidence. There was no significant difference in peripheral BDNF levels in ADHD children before or after methylphenidate treatment. Additionally, there was no statistically significant difference in BDNF levels between children with ADHD and controls. Understanding the role of BDNF in ADHD may provide insight into the disorder's pathophysiology and facilitate the development of biological markers for clinical use. Our findings suggest that BDNF levels are not significantly affected by methylphenidate treatment in ADHD children and do not differ from controls. Executive functions (EFs) encompass a wide array of cognitive processes, which appear to be influenced by genetic variants of the COMT, DRD2/ANKK1, and BDNF polymorphisms. The present study aimed to investigate whether COMT Val158Met (rs4680), DRD2/ANKK1 (rs1800497), and BDNF Val66Met (rs6265) polymorphisms were associated with EFs assessed at rest and during moderate acute physical exercise. Sixty physically active individuals underwent four laboratory visits. First, they filled out the pre-exercise survey, researchers collected their anthropometric data, and then performed a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test. In the second and third sessions, participants performed EFs test in a randomized order: while the individual was seated on a cycle ergometer without pedaling (i.e., rest condition); and during physical exercise (pedaling for 30 minutes at moderate intensity before starting the EFs test during exercising). On the fourth day, blood samples were drawn. Our results showed that the response time of the COMT Val homozygotes group was significantly shorter than the COMT Met-carrier group [t(39.78) = 2.13, p =.039,d = 0.56] at rest condition. No significant association was found for the other analyses (DRD2/ANKK1 and BDNF). In conclusion, the present study suggests that COMT Val158Met (rs4680) polymorphisms may be associated with EFs at rest condition. However, further studies are needed to validate this association. Background: The initial weeks after hospital discharge is a period of adaptation when parents assume great responsibility for the care of their child. Preterm birth may impact their demands of care.Aims: To compare parental priorities in the care of preterm and full-term newborns in the first two months after hospital discharge and to identify changes in priorities over time.Methods: Parents of 22 full-term and 19 preterm infants were followed for two months after hospital discharge, with three timepoint evaluations of the parental priorities. They reported on infant care demands in a semi-structured interview.Results: Despite prematurity, demands were similar between groups. Within-group changes occurred over time. Priorities related to bathing and caring for the navel showed significant reduction (p < 0.01); demands related to children's health care increased in the groups (p < 0.01). Feeding and sleep priorities were reduced in the full-term group (p < 0.02). Children's adaptation to routine increased significantly in the preterm group (p = 0.04).Conclusion: Knowledge of parents' priorities in caring for preterm or full-term newborns at home helps health care teams develop appropriate support strategies and improve specialized assistance to the families.
