A specially designed experimental device was used in laboratory to investigate the corrosion of mullite during the calcination of Li(Ni x Co y Mn z)O 2 (LNCM) materials. The anti-corrosion tests were carried out at 1000, 1100, 1200 and 1300 °C, and characterized with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of temperature on the interactions between mullite insulation materials and LNCM materials was determined. In addition, the high-temperature creep properties of the mullite insulation materials before and after corrosion were tested. The laboratory scale tests, thermodynamic and kinetic calculations allowed a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the mullite insulation materials during serving for the roasting process of LNCM materials. Through this research, it is suggested that the upgrading of the kiln lining in the lithium battery industry should select materials with excellent resistance to alkali corrosion, especially excellent resistance to Li+ corrosion. There is an urgent demand for advanced neutron-shielding materials that can be particularly used at extremely high temperatures in nuclear energy system. In this study, GdBO 3 –Al 18 B 4 O 33 composite ceramics (GACCs) were successfully fabricated by the pressureless sintering of Al 4 B 2 O 9 and Al 2 O 3 using different firing temperatures and varying quantities of Gd 2 O 3 used as the neutron-shielding agent. The properties of the obtained samples, including the crystalline phases, microstructure, thermophysical properties, and neutron-shielding capacity, were studied systematically. The structural stability determined by thermal cycle tests is reassessed based on the thermal stress caused by the mismatch between the thermal expansion coefficients of multiple phases in the material system, and it is further verified via numerical simulations performed using the finite element method. Moreover, the influence of the sample thickness and dispersion density of Gd on the shielding capacity of the material were also investigated and parameterised to guide the design of borate-based shielding materials. The results suggest that GACCs are promising candidates for high-temperature structural materials and excellent neutron-shielding materials in novel nuclear systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the rapid development of the ternary Li-ion battery cathode Li(Ni x Co y Mn z)O 2 (LNCM) materials industry has resulted in increased demand for refractory kiln furniture (saggars). To reduce the production cost of the saggars and improve their anti-corrosion performance, mullite-zirconia materials were synthesized from zircon-containing kyanite tailings. This study examines the potential of the materials as saggars in the preparation of the LNCM materials based on two aspects—the material's physical properties and its resistance to the corrosion of LNCM materials. The results show that mullite-zirconia composites can be successfully synthesized at 1500–1600 °C, and the physical properties of the materials meet the needs of production. Additionally, the mullite-zirconia material prepared at 1550 °C was more resistant to LCNM precursor corrosion than the ones prepared at 1500 and 1600 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porous materials are widely used in heat exchangers, sewage treatment, electromagnetic shielding, thermal insulation, gas adsorption, photocatalytic due to their high specific surface area. The specific surface area of materials plays a pivotal role in them. It can be enhanced by increasing the porosity of the material, but the cost of this improvement is reducing the strength of the material. In order to improve performance, it is necessary to increase its surface area without reducing the strength of the material. In this work, mullite porous ceramics with mullite whisker on the inside and outside surfaces structures, which known as prickly porous ceramics(PPCs). They were fabricated using polyurethane foam coated with slurries as the pore-forming agents, sintered after secondary impregnation with silica sol and ammonium fluoroaluminate. The the sintering temperature as well as slurry composition of secondary impregnation were tuned to tailor the strength and surface structures of the PPCs. In addition, the potential of PPCs as high-temperature catalyst supports was demonstrated. Overall, the PPCs demonstrated large surface areas and high mechanical strength.
