Abstract

Nitrogen doped indium oxide (InON) and indium tin oxide (ITON) thin films have been fabricated with reactive sputtering in nitrogen-rich plasmas for high temperature thin film thermocouples (TFTCs). Different content of nitrogen was introduced into InON film electrode in order to improve the thermoelectric properties of the thin film thermocouples. XRD, XPS and SEM were used to reveal the chemistry and microstructure of InON films and high temperature static calibration was used to characterize the thermoelectric properties of InON-ITON TFTCs. The relationship between the thermoelectric properties of TFTC and the microstructures of the films was investigated. TFTCs with high linearity and excellent stability were realized. Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of soy isoflavone daidzein on growth performance, serum metabolites, nutrient digestibility, and fecal bacterial community in bull calves. Twenty bull calves (138.9 ± 12.1 kg) were used in a 60-d feeding study. These calves were stratified by weight into groups and randomly allotted by group to one of four dietary groups including supplemental 0 (control), 100, 200, and 400 mg daidzein/kg feed, respectively. The average daily gain was increased significantly by supplemental daidzein ( P < 0.001), and the largest difference occurred between the control and 400 mg/kg groups (126.6 g/d). On d 30, supplemental daidzein tended to increase serum IgM ( P = 0.066) and IgA ( P = 0.096) levels, reduced and tended to reduce serum thiiodothronine ( P = 0.008) and thyroxine ( P = 0.078) levels; the 400 mg/kg group had greater serum IgG level ( P = 0.002) and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration ( P = 0.016) than control group. On d 60, supplemental daidzein reduced serum glucose concentration ( P = 0.008), increased and tended to increase the activities of total superoxide dismutase ( P = 0.001) and glutathione peroxidase ( P = 0.058); the serum IgM, growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor I levels were increased by 17.0% ( P = 0.002), 18.8% ( P = 0.014) and 26.5% ( P = 0.002), respectively, in the 400 mg/kg group relative to control group. Supplemental daidzein increased the total tract apparent digestibility of crude protein ( P = 0.029). Compared with control group, 200 and 400 mg/kg groups increased or tended to increase the relative abundance of fecal bacteria belonging to genus Desulfovibrio ( P = 0.003), Peptococcus ( P = 0.046), Intestinimonas ( P = 0.095), Ruminobacter ( P = 0.093), and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-010 ( P = 0.073), and reduced the abundance of genus Bacteroidales_S24-7_group_norank ( P = 0.001) and Parabacteroides ( P = 0.023). The 100 mg/kg group increased the abundance of genus Dorea ( P = 0.047) and Prevotellaceae_UCG-003 ( P = 0.032), and tended to reduce the abundance of genus Ruminococcaceae_UCG-005 ( P = 0.058) and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 ( P = 0.084) relative to control group. This study demonstrates that supplementation with daidzein in diets could enhance antioxidant and immune capacities, change gastrointestinal microbial populations, promote dietary protein digestion, and improve production performance of bull calves. Abstract

The solar impact on the Earth's climate change is a long topic with intense debates. Based on the reconstructed data of solar sunspot number (SSN), the local temperature in Vostok ( T ), and the atmospheric CO 2 concentration data of Dome Concordia, we investigate the periodicities of solar activity, the atmospheric CO 2 and local temperature in the inland Antarctica as well as their correlations during the past 11,000 years before AD 1895. We find that the variations of SSN and T have some common periodicities, such as the 208 year (yr), 521 yr, and ~1000 yr cycles. The correlations between SSN and T are strong for some intermittent periodicities. However, the wavelet analysis demonstrates that the relative phase relations between them usually do not hold stable except for the millennium-cycle component. The millennial variation of SSN leads that of T by 30–40 years, and the anti-phase relation between them keeps stable nearly over the whole 11,000 years of the past. As a contrast, the correlations between CO 2 and T are neither strong nor stable. These results indicate that solar activity might have potential influences on the long-term change of Vostok's local climate during the past 11,000 years before modern industry. Abstract: Purpose: To explore the feasibility of using 3T high-resolution MR lymphangiography to characterize inguinal lymphatic vessel leakage (LVL). Materials and methods: Sixteen patients with known inguinal LVL underwent 3T MR lymphangiography and T2-weighted imaging. The presence or absence of inguinal LVL and the responsible lymphatic vessels were determined using the above imaging modalities and confirmed by surgical procedure. Afterwards, fifteen patients with recurring LVL following conservative treatment were referred to surgical intervention. Results: Specific inguinal LVL enhancement patterns and leaking lymphatic vessels were detected in 15 of 16 patients. Compared to the SNR of enhanced lymph nodes, that of the enhanced LVL was significantly greater (t = 7.149, p < 0.01), thereby making it possible to differentiate between LVL sites and enhancing inguinal lymph nodes. Furthermore, the steepest contrast enhancement curve slope of enhanced LVL was lower than that of enhanced lymph nodes (t = −2.860, p = 0.02). After MR diagnosis, 15 patients successfully underwent open exploration and ligation of the leaking lymphatic vessel. Clinical follow-up did not demonstrate recurrence of lymphatic fluid in the groin. Conclusions: High-resolution MR lymphangiography combined with T2-weighted imaging is a promising approach to identifying specific features of lymphatic vessel leakage in the groin. Abstract

Abstract: Aimed at the problem of tubing corrosion in environment that containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), and chlorides (Cl−), the corrosion behaviour of two nickel based alloys (UNS 06985 and UNS 08825) in 15wt%NaCl solution containing H2S/CO2 in high temperature and high pressure environment was investigated. The pitting corrosion behaviour of Ni-based alloys was studied in FeCl3·6H2O solution by means of polarisation curve and immersion tests. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS) was applied to analyse the microstructure and corrosion performance of the samples. The results showed that the pitting-resistant of nickel alloy UNS 06985 was superior to UNS 08825. With the rising of experimental temperature, the corrosion increased and some slight pitting attacks appeared on the surface of UNS 08825. The test temperature was the crucial factor that influenced not only the compactness and the growing rate of corrosion product scale, but also the corrosion rate of the alloys. Elemental sulfur is a strong oxidant, the presence of S0 leads to a serious localized corrosion. Abstract: Phosphorus (P) desorption from P-saturated alum sludge, which was used as main substrate in a novel constructed wetland for wastewater treatment, was studied. Groups of batch experiments were designed and conducted to explore the efficiencies of P extraction using different acids (HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4) and bases (NaOH and KOH). The results showed that either acid or base is efficient for P extraction and the efficiency relied mainly on the concentrations of H+/OH−, not the type of acid or base. Considering the efficiency, price and safety of the acids and bases tested, H2SO4 was chosen as most suitable reagent for P extraction. A Box–Behnken experimental design based on the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate the optimum of H2SO4 extraction. The optimal condition for the mass of sludge, H2SO4 concentration and volume was 0.8g, 0.063M and 142ml, respectively. At such optimal condition, the maximum P extraction efficiency of 98.2% was achieved. Additionally, most of the main components of the saturated sludge, such as metals (Al, Ca, Mg and Fe), TOC (total organic carbon) and nitrogen can also be extracted. Overall, the results supported that H2SO4 seems to be an efficient and cost-effective reagent among all the reagents tested for P-saturated alum sludge treatment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study aims to explore a novel application of dewatered alum sludge cakes (DASC) as the main medium in a single model reed bed to treat phosphorus-rich animal farm wastewater under “tidal flow” operation on a long-term basis. It is expected that the cakes act as the carrier for developing biofilm and also serve as adsorbent to enhance phosphorus (P) immobilization. Results have demonstrated that average removal efficiencies of 73.3±15.9% for COD, 82.9±12.3% for BOD5, 86.4±6.0% for RP (reactive P), 88.6±7.2% for soluble reactive P (SRP) and 77.6±17.5% for SS can be achieved during the two year’s operation. More significantly, the “P-adsorption proportion” by DASC in the reed bed is 42% of the overall P removal. The remaining removal of P may be contributed by the trapping and filtration process of DASC. Abstract

During the thermal processing of milk, Maillard reactions occur between proteins and lactose to generate glycated proteins. In this study, a lactose-glycated caseinate was hydrolyzed by trypsin. The obtained glycated caseinate (GCN) hydrolysate had a lactose content of 10.8 g/kg of protein. We identified its glycation sites and then assessed it for its protective effect against lipopolysaccharide-induced barrier injury using a rat intestinal epithelial cell line (IEC-6 cells) as a cell model and unglycated caseinate (CN) hydrolysate as a reference. Results from our liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of the GCN hydrolysate verified that lactose glycation occurred at the Lys residues in 3 casein components (α S1 -casein, β-casein, and κ-casein), and this resulted in the formation of 5 peptides with the following amino acid sequences: EMPFPKYPKYPVEPF, HIQKEDVPSE, GSENSEKTTMPL, NQDKTEIPT, and EGIHAQQKEPM. The results from cell experiments showed that the 2 hydrolysates could promote cell growth and decrease lactate dehydrogenase release in the lipopolysaccharide-injured cells; more importantly, they could partially protect the damaged barrier function of the cells by increasing trans-epithelial electrical resistance, decreasing epithelial permeability, and upregulating the expression of the 3 tight junction proteins zonula occludens-1, occludin, and claudin-1. However, compared with CN hydrolysate, GCN hydrolysate showed lower efficacy in protecting against cellular barrier dysfunction. We propose that the different chemical characteristics of the CN hydrolysate and the GCN hydrolysate (i.e., amino acid loss and lactose conjugation) contributed to the lower barrier-protective efficacy of the GCN hydrolysate. During dairy processing, protein glycation of the Maillard type might have a non-negligible, unfavorable effect on dairy proteins, in view of the resulting protein glycation we found and the critical function of proteins for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Direct energy deposition process based on laser and powder feeding provides powerful ability in integrated manufacturing of multi-materials components. In this work, TC11/Ti 2 AlNb dual alloy thin walls were prepared by direct energy deposition process. The microstructure evolution and tensile properties of the dual alloy samples perpendicular to the interface after different heat treatments were investigated. The results indicated that there were two distinct composition transition zones between these two alloys due to the dilution effect during the process. From TC11 alloy side to Ti 2 AlNb alloy side, the phase evolved as: α + β → α + α 2 + β/B2 + O → α 2 + β/B2 + O → α 2 + B2 + O. As-deposited materials presented better mechanical performance than other two counterparts both at room temperature and 650 °C elevated temperature. For all samples, the fracture positions were not located within the interface zone, indicating the good mechanical performance of the interface zone. Abstract: Step-feeding strategies have been extensively studied and comprehensively analyzed in this study for a four-stage alum sludge-based tidal flow constructed wetlands (AlS-TFCWs) system. Enhanced total nitrogen removal of 83% is achieved under high nitrogen loading rate of 19.1gN/m2 d. The key issues towards the success of a significant nitrogen removal in step-feeding TFCWs are the bed resting time (which provides better aeration for nitrification) and up flow stage/delayed input of side stream(s) (which ensure favorable environment for better denitrification). Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) was found effective in the 1st stage of the system and SND via nitrite is the main nitrogen conversion mechanism. The optimal influent distribution fraction for step-feeding purpose can be estimated from a theoretical basis, which is a function of the influent BCOD/TKN ratio. Abstract: Cerium-based conversion coatings have been made on alumina borate whisker-reinforced AA6061 composite pre-treated with hydrogen fluoride. The pre-treatment prior to coating significantly affects the microstructure and the corrosion behavior of the ultimate coated composites. The coating deposited on composite pre-treated for 20s provides better corrosion protection than that pre-treated for 180s. A self-healing effect is observed on the coated composite with pre-treatment for 20s in the early stage of immersion, while no self-healing effect appears with pre-treatment for 180s. Abstract: The concept, design and performance analysis of a four-stage novel constructed wetland system (CWs) capable of enhanced and simultaneous removal of phosphorus (P) and organic matter (OM) from wastewaters is described. Alum sludge, a largely available by-product of drinking water facilities using aluminium salts as coagulant was used as the media. Under a hydraulic loading rate of 1.27m3/m2 d and a range of organic loading rate of 279.4–774.7g-BOD5/m2 d and 361.1–1028.7g-COD/m2 d, average removal efficiencies (mean±SD) of 90.6±7.5% for BOD5 and 71.8±10.2% for COD were achieved, respectively. P removal was exceptional with average removal efficiency of 97.6±1.9% achieved for soluble reactive P at a mean influent concentration of 21.0±2.9mg/l. Overall, the system holds great promise as a novel CWs for simultaneous removal of P and OM, and at the same time, it transforms alum sludge from a waste into a useful material. Abstract: The metastable pitting behaviors of mild steel in NaHCO3 +NaCl and NaNO2 +NaCl solutions were studied with electrochemical methods. In NaHCO3 +NaCl solution the potential range between metastable pitting potential E m and pitting potential E b is relatively large, and most of the current fluctuations are individual. While in NaNO2 +NaCl solution the E m and E b values are much higher and the potential range between them is very narrow, leading to overlapped current peaks. The changes of E m and E b with chloride concentration follow similar tendency. In both testing solutions, the repassivated metastable pitting sites are prone to become preferential sites for following metastable pits to nucleate, leading to accumulated corrosion damages on the surface. Mild steel shows stronger passivity in NaNO2 +NaCl solution than in NaHCO3 +NaCl solution, which explains the higher pitting resistance of the steel in the former. In addition, the competitive adsorption of anions also plays an important role in the increase of E m and E b, especially in inhibiting nucleation of metastable pits. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study was to investigate the effect of dietary L-theanine (THE) supplementation (0, 600 mg/kg) on growth performance, carcass traits, immune organ indexes, meat quality, and muscle antioxidant status of transported broilers. A total of 180 one-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were randomly allotted to 2 treatment groups including a THE-free group with 12 replicates of 10 birds each and a THE group with 6 replicates of 10 birds each. On the morning of day 42, after a 9-h fast, the birds of THE-free group were divided into 2 equal groups, and then all birds in the 3 groups were placed into 18 crates and were transported according to the following protocols: 0-h transport of birds in the THE-free group (control group), 3-h transport of birds in the THE-free group (T group), and 3-h transport of birds in the THE group (T + THE group). Results showed that dietary THE supplementation improved feed conversion ratio and birds' final body weight (P < 0.05), while transport and dietary THE supplementation did not affect carcass traits of broilers (P > 0.05). Transport increased bird live weight loss, drip loss, L* 24 h , muscle malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC) and lactate contents, while it decreased thymus, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius indexes, pH 24h , a*, and muscle total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activities and glycogen content (P < 0.05). Nevertheless, compared with birds in the T group, birds in the T + THE group exhibited increased thymus, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius indexes, pH 24h , a* 24 h , and muscle T-AOC, CAT, and GSH-PX activities and glycogen content, and decreased drip loss, L* 24 h , and muscle MDA, PC, and lactate contents (P < 0.05). This study provided the first evidence that dietary THE supplementation prevented transport-stress-impaired immune organ indexes and meat quality of broilers, and the reason for maintenance of meat quality by supplementation of THE may be partly ascribed to the changed muscle glycolysis metabolism and antioxidant status. • Two small-sized specimens are proposed for fracture toughness test. • J - Q - M principle used to approximately quantify the 3D crack-tip constraint. • Constraint corrected J-R curves of SA508 steel have been obtained. • J-R curves of actual components can be predicted in structural integrity assessment. Based on normalization method, experimental J -resistance (J-R) curves of SA-508 steel using five types of specimen configurations, such as C-shaped outside edge-notched compression (COEC), C-shaped inside edge-notched tension (CIET), miniature single edge notched bend (Mini-SENB), standard SENB and compact tension (CT) specimens are given. Great difference can be observed in these experimental J-R curves because of the various specimen configuration and dimension. The results show that, COEC specimens present the lowest J-R curves with high level of crack tip constraint, but the highest J-R curves are estimated from Mini-SENB specimens because of the lowest level of crack tip constraint they have. The classic crack tip constraint effect can explain these differences, so J-Q-M theory is applied to quantify this effect through 3D elastic plastic finite element analysis, and a family of constraint corrected J-R curves for SA-508 steel are consequently obtained, which match well with the experimental data for five types of specimen configurations with different dimensions. Abstract: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the ratio of acid detergent lignin to neutral detergent fiber (ADL/aNDF) and the particle length of ryegrass on chewing activity, ruminal fermentation, and in situ degradability in goats. Four rumen-fistulated goats were fed ryegrass as the sole forage source in a 4×4 Latin square study. The forage was harvested at early or full bloom to result in a low or high ADL/aNDF ratio, and chopped to result in 20 or 5mm theoretical particle length in each case. Four diets were formed from the combination of these variables, all containing the same forage aNDF concentration. Dietary physically effective neutral detergent fiber was determined using the Penn State Particle Separator with three sieves (1.18, 8.00, and 19.00mm). Increasing ryegrass particle length increased physically effective neutral detergent fiber of the residue covered on the 8.00 and 19.00mm screens for the diets and chewing and rumination time, but decreased dry matter intake (P<0.05). Increasing ADL/aNDF and particle length of ryegrass both increased mean ruminal pH, and decreased the duration that ruminal pH was below 6.0 and the concentration of ruminal volatile fatty acids (P<0.05). Low dietary ADL/aNDF increased ryegrass dry matter and aNDF degradation (P<0.01). Increasing ADL/aNDF and the length of ryegrass increases chewing activity and stabilizes ruminal pH, but may reduce dry matter intake, ruminal volatile fatty acid production, and diet digestibility in goats. Abstract: In the Wenchuan area in SW China, an abundance of loose co-seismic landslide debris was present on the slopes after the Wenchuan earthquake, which in later years served as source material for rainfall-induced debris flows or shallow landslides. Slopes composed of Cambrian sandstones and siltstones intercalated with slates appeared to be most susceptible to co-seismic landsliding. A total of 20 debris flows are described in this paper; all were triggered by heavy rainfall on 13th of August 2010. Field reconnaissance and measurements, supported by aerial photo interpretation, were conducted to identify the locations and morphological characteristics of the debris flow gullies in order to obtain information about surface area and volume of landslides and the debris flows. The debris flows in the study area were initiated by two processes: a) run-off erosion on co-seismic landslide material, and concentrated erosion of landslide debris in steep channels; b) new landslides that transform into debris flows. The volume of debris flow deposits on individual fans varies by many orders of magnitude. The smallest deposit has a volume of from 5760 to 3.1millionm3. A comparison of the measured volumes, deposited on the fan with the volumes of debris stored in the catchment shows the huge potential for future debris flow activity. Whilst there is a weakly significant positive correlation between these two volumes, no significant statistical correlation could be established between volumes of debris flow deposits and other morphometric parameters of the catchment. A catastrophic debris flow catchment (the Wenjia catchment) was selected as an extreme case to show in detail the mechanism of debris flow formation as a result of intensive erosion in loose material, which was deposited by a rock avalanche during the 2008 Earthquake event. Analyses of the meteorological conditions that triggered these debris flows show one day antecedent precipitation varying between 67.7 and 137.6mm, with a mean rainfall intensity of about 7.3 to 22.5mm/h. A rainfall event with peak intensity of 38.7mm/h triggered the largest debris flow event. Rainfall data related to five debris flow events in the Wenjia torrent was used to establish a primary rainfall intensity–duration relationship for the triggering of debris flows, which was compared to other rainfall duration thresholds from other parts of the world. In the discussion emphasis is laid on the need to unravel the process mechanisms which initiated the debris flows for a better understanding and assessment of meteorological thresholds. The effects of composition of sorbent, reaction temperature, WHSV, hot coal gas composition, reactor types and support on the breakthrough sulfur capacities were investigated. When the content of H2S is 0.86% (vol.) in the feed gas, the breakthrough sulfur capacity of 50% La x Fe y O z /MCM-41 (La:Fe=1:2) achieved 7.94gS/100g sorbent, and approximately 63.9% of theoretical sulfur capacity was utilized. The results of ten successive desulfurization–regeneration cycles revealed that 50% La x Fe y O z /MCM-41 (La:Fe=1:2) sorbent presented high performance and stability for hot coal gas desulfurization. Abstract: In this study, beneficial reuse of the alum-contained drinking water treatment sludge is extended into developing a novel constructed wetland system (CWs) using the alum sludge as main substrate. The study reports on the first pilot field-scale alum sludge-based CWs operated in the tidal flow mode with enhanced capacity for phosphorus and organic matter removal from animal farm wastewater. The concept of the development is presented and this is followed by the performance analysis of the first CWs of its kind. The CWs consists of four identical compartments in series operated using a tidal flow strategy with a hydraulic loading rate of 0.29m3/m2 d. First year analysis of the system''s performance shows that it is a unique and promising low-cost wastewater treatment system. The mean monthly removal efficiencies obtained were determined that ranged 57–84%, 36–84%, 11–78%, 49–93%, 75–94%, 73–97% and 46–83% for BOD5, COD, TN, NH4-N, TP, P (inorganic phosphorus) and SS, respectively. The system showed a distinct phosphorus removal and also, the system was effective in reducing levels of organics and ammonium-nitrogen. More importantly, the system showcases a novel reuse alternative for the alum sludge as opposed to its landfilling, demonstrating a win-win technique with a great potential for larger scale application. Abstract: The electrochemical behaviour of Ni-base alloys (Inconel 625, Inconel 718, G3 and Incoloy 825) is carried out at 80°C in CO2/H2S corrosion environments using cyclic potentiodynamic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The passivity mechanisms are analysed and discussed. In addition, some significant characterisation parameters such as E corr, I pass, E pit, E pp, ΔE and I pass in cyclic polarisation curves are analysed and compared to reveal the corrosion resistance of various Ni-base alloys. The equivalent circuit model and ZsimpWin software are utilised to discuss the Nyquist plots of various Ni-base alloys. The diffusion mechanism in EIS measurement is discussed. The result shows that the corrosion resistance of the Ni-base alloys to CO2 corrosion or CO2/H2S corrosion follows the sequence: Inconel 625>G3>Inconel 718>Incoloy 825. Abstract: A complex system dynamic (SD) model focusing on water resources, termed as TianjinSD, is developed for the integrated and scientific management of the water resources of Tianjin, which contains information feedback that governs interactions in the system and is capable of synthesizing component-level knowledge into system behavior simulation at an integrated level, thus presenting reasonable predictive results for policy-making on water resources allocation and management. As for the Tianjin city, interactions among 96 components for 12 years are explored and four planning alternatives are chosen, one of which is based on the conventional mode assuming that the existing pattern of human activities will be prevailed, while the others are alternative planning designs based on the interaction of local authorities and planning researchers. Leak-before-break analyses on tube microcracks are beneficial for preventing small loss of coolant accident in nuclear power plants. Specially, the tube leakage of steam generator may lead to steam generator tube rupture. Currently, experimental investigations on leak flow rate characteristics of normal temperature water and high pressure subcooled water through axial and circumferential microcracks of steam generator tubes were carried out, respectively. Cold Test results indicate that leak flow rates of circumferential microcracks for 0.13 ≤ W ≤ 0.16 mm and 3.6 ≤ δ / D h ≤ 4.4 increase with a decreasing back pressure (P out) first and then can be regarded as a constant value for a given working pressure in steam generator tubes (P in). Additionally, each of P in has a critical differential pressure between P in and P out (Δ P c). The ratio of Δ P c to P in is equal to 0.55, which is smaller than 0.64 for axial microcracks. Hot Test results show that leak flow rates decrease significantly with an increasing working fluid temperature (T f, in) when T f, in is larger than a certain value due to the flashing of subcooled water near exits of microcracks. Besides, discharge coefficients of high pressure subcooled water through axial and circumferential microcracks under various back pressure conditions decreases with an increasing P in for a given subcooled temperature. In general, new correlations were developed to give excellent predictions for the leak flow rate data of normal temperature water and high pressure subcooled water through axial and circumferential microcracks of steam generator tubes under various back pressure conditions with a maximum deviation of ±6%.
