To assess the relationship between nitrogen concentrations in mosses and wet bulk nitrogen deposition or concentrations in precipitation, moss tissue and deposition were sampled within a distance of 1 km of each other in seven European countries. Relationships for various forms of nitrogen appeared to be asymptotic, with data for different countries being positioned at different locations along the asymptotic relationship and saturation occurring at a wet bulk nitrogen deposition of ca. 20 kg N ha −1 yr −1 . The asymptotic behaviour was more pronounced for ammonium-N than nitrate-N, with high ammonium deposition at German sites being most influential in providing evidence of the asymptotic behaviour. Within countries, relationships were only significant for Finland and Switzerland and were more or less linear. The results confirm previous relationships described for modelled total deposition. Nitrogen concentration in mosses can be applied to identify areas at risk of high nitrogen deposition at European scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One monitoring station is insufficient to characterize the high spatial variation of traffic-related heavy metals within cities. We tested moss bags (Hylocomium splendens), deployed in a dense network, for the monitoring of metals in outdoor air and characterized metals’ long-term spatial distribution and its determinants in Girona, Spain. Mosses were exposed outside 23 homes for two months; NO2 was monitored for comparison. Metals were not highly correlated with NO2 and showed higher spatial variation than NO2. Regression models explained 61–85% of Cu, Cr, Mo, Pb, Sb, Sn, and Zn and 72% of NO2 variability. Metals were strongly associated with the number of bus lines in the nearest street. Heavy metals are an alternative traffic-marker to NO2 given their toxicological relevance, stronger association with local traffic and higher spatial variability. Monitoring heavy metals with mosses is appealing, particularly for long-term exposure assessment, as mosses can remain on site many months without maintenance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Austria has been participating in the “European Moss Survey” within the UN-ECE ICP-vegetation since 1991. Three consecutive sampling periods in 1995, 2000 and 2005 were performed. Five moss species at 220 sampling sites (2.5 sites1000km−2) were analysed for Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, Mo, Pb, V, and Zn concentrations. According to the retrospective analysis by 3-year-old moss segments, this investigation covered deposition in the period between 1989 and 2005. A relocation of sampling sites (within 2km2) was necessary for <10% of the sites within the overall period. On an Austria-wide scale all metals with the exception of Co, Cd and Hg showed a significant decrease of concentrations in the observed period. On a regional or site scale a large deviation from this general trend could be found, leading to significant differences between regions for many elements (e.g. for Co, Pb and Zn). Even continuous increases of metal deposition could be found at several sites (e.g. for Mo and Cu). This implies that pollution levels at different scales should be looked at in a differentiated way even in times of generally decreasing metal deposition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study aimed at cross-border mapping metal loads in mosses in eight European countries in 1990, 1995, and 2000 and at investigating confounding factors. Geostatistics was used for mapping, indicating high local variances but clear spatial autocorrelations. Inference statistics identified differences of metal concentrations in mosses on both sides of the national borders. However, geostatistical analyses did not ascertain discontinuities of metal concentrations in mosses at national borders due to sample analysis in different laboratories applying a range of analytical techniques. Applying Classification and Regression Trees (CART) to the German moss data as an example, the local variation in metal concentrations in mosses were proved to depend mostly on different moss species, potential local emission sources, canopy drip and precipitation. In this study a combined approach of bioindication results correlated with an extensive set of data on air pollution and climate was used to assess the pollution status of the Man and Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald (Austria). Bryophytes served as impact indicators (via the Index of Atmospheric Purity-method IAP) at 30 sites as well as accumulation monitors for airborne trace elements (Al, Pb, V, S, Zn, Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni, Co, Mo, Cd, As, Sb and 16 EPA-PAHs) at 10 sites within the reserve. The results of these bioindication methods were subsequently correlated with further pollution (NO2, SO2 and dust) and climate data (precipitation, temperature and humidity). The findings obtained clearly indicate the following: Bryophyte distribution is solely influenced by the status of air quality, without interference by climatic or site-related factors, which is in contrast to several previous investigations. IAP-values correlated significantly with NO2 (0. 553; P =0. 004), SO2 winter values (0. 511; P =0. 013) and PM10 (dust) (0. 561; P =0. 013). The results obtained via chemical analyses revealed a strong correlation with data derived from the IAP methodology. In terms of the overall air quality within the biosphere reserve Wienerwald, the north-eastern part appears to be the most affected one with a most likely pollution contribution emitted by the capital city Vienna, agriculture and neighbouring countries. Abstract: The concentrations of platinum group elements (PGE; platinum, palladium, rhodium) and 17 other elements in mosses growing at 32 sampling sites along 12 roads in Austria were analysed. The study included passive monitoring of naturally growing mosses with an experimental design using mosses samples exposed in a tunnel experiment. PGEs (Pt, Pd, Rh) were analysed by ICP-MS (ELAN DRC II, Perkin Elmer SCIEX) according to EN ISO 17294-2 Tl.29. Mean concentrations of PGEs in five moss species were: Pt 7.07±9.97, Pd 2.8±5.2 und Rh 0.6±0.8ngg−1 dry weight. This is comparable to data derived from measurements of gasoline autocatalyst emissions or airborne particles (<10μm). Compared to soils and road dust along highways, concentrations in mosses were lower by a factor of ten, compared to grasses they were comparable or somewhat higher. The ratios between the various PGEs were calculated as follows (mean values): Pt/Pd 7.9±10.2, Pt/Rh 12.6±8.3 and Pd/Rh 3.7±2.2. The number of light duty vehicles (<3.5t) and the distance from the road were the main influential factors for PGE concentrations. Especially strong correlations could be found between Pt and Sb, Cu, Zn, and Cd (in decreasing order), which are all elements derived mainly from road traffic emissions. Cluster analysis (Partioning Around Medoids Method) separated elements derived mainly from soil dust (Ca, Al). An analysis of spatial deposition patterns of PGEs showed a reciprocal decrease of concentrations with increasing distance from the road, reaching background values at distances between 10 and 200m, sometimes even more, but outside the spatial range of our investigation. • Epixylic bryophyte diversity increased strongly up to 60 m3 of deadwood per hectare. • Obligate epixylic bryophytes occurred only above 900 mm of annual precipitation. • Deadwood-specific specialists benefited from the wettest conditions. • Conserving substrate-specific communities needs both enough deadwood and rainfall. • Characteristic deadwood-dwelling liverworts face the highest risk of climate change. Deadwood is a habitat for numerous biota and serves as an indicator of forest biodiversity. Bryophytes significantly contribute to deadwood communities and epixylic bryophytes are particularly threatened. Additional to deadwood volumes, their occurrence depends on climatic conditions. However, the interactive effects of deadwood and climate on epixylic bryophytes have hardly been assessed. Here, we analyse these effects based on 8 143 bryophyte specimens collected on 510 logs in 51 Austrian forests. We found that annual precipitation sum and deadwood volume explained 67%, 90%, and 82% of the variation in moss, liverwort and total species richness, respectively. Segmented regression indicated several breakpoints in these relationships, especially at c. 60 m3/ha of deadwood and 900 mm, respectively 1700 mm of annual precipitation. Epixylic bryophyte diversity increased strongly up to the deadwood threshold, but only moderately with still higher volumes. Nine hundred mm of annual precipitation was a macroclimatic limit for deadwood-specific bryophyte species. Below this value, obligate epixylic bryophytes were lost and liverworts were rare, even at sites with high deadwood amounts. At the wettest sites, the overall number of species decreased while deadwood-specific specialists further increased in number. The close tie of epixylic bryophytes to macroclimate may constrain the efficiency of deadwood management measures and suggests considerable impacts of climate change. A drier and warmer climate will probably decrease species richness and change the composition of epixylic bryophyte communities, with the most characteristic species, especially liverworts, facing the highest risk. In an agricultural landscape in eastern Austria eight terrestrial organism groups were investigated as potential biodiversity indicators. We present a cross-taxon congruence assessment obtained at the landscape scale using two groups of plants (bryophytes and vascular plants), five groups of invertebrates (gastropods, spiders, orthopterans, carabid beetles and ants) and one vertebrate taxon (birds). We tested four different approaches: correlated species counts, surrogate measures of the overall species richness that was assessed, a multi-taxa (or shopping basket) approach and a simple complementarity algorithm. With few exceptions, pairwise correlations between taxa, correlations between one taxon and the species richness of the remaining groups, and correlations between a combination of the richness of two taxa and the remaining species richness were highly positive. Complementarity-derived priority sets of sampling sites using one taxon as a surrogate for the pooled species richness of all other taxa captured significantly more species than selecting areas randomly. As an essential first step in selecting useful biodiversity indicators, we demonstrate that species richness of vascular plants and birds showed the highest correlations with the overall species richness. In a multi-taxa approach and in complementarity site selection, each of the eight investigated taxa had the capability to capture a high percentage of the overall species richness.
