The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effect of geothermal energy output on carbon dioxide emissions among the European countries (EU) classified as EU27 states, within the time frame 1990 to 2021. The study adopted autoregressive-distributed lag (ARDL), and the findings show that the carbon dioxide emissions mitigate with an improvement in geothermal power production. Carbon dioxide emissions were observed to be increased by some socioeconomic factors such as population density, economic growth, and fossil fuel. Findings from this study show there could be a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emission among the EU13 emerging economies leveraging on geothermal energy growth than what will be achieved among the EU14 emerged economies. Conversely, the findings from this study also show that a significant level of reduction could be attained in carbon dioxide emission among the EU14 emerged economies as a result of aging population density than we could have among the EU13 emerging economies. Also, this study established that EU14 emerging economies could attain a significant increase in carbon dioxide emissions through fossil fuel consumption and economic growth than what will be attained among the EU13 emerging economies. The three estimators adopted in the study which are the pooled mean group, mean group, and dynamic fixed effect confirmed that the projected calculations in the study are confirmed valid. This study, therefore, recommended that European nations classified as EU27 should lay more emphasis on geothermal growth to attain energy and environmental goals. Legislators in these EU countries should focus more on policies that will ensure the security and sustainability of geothermal growth. Policymakers in these EU countries should make concerted efforts toward making policies that will promote the growth and sustainability of geothermal power, thereby cutting down the need for fossil fuel and CO2 emissions in the future time. 7. Understanding the influencing factors affecting the sustainability of China's coastal recreational fisheries: A spatial spillover perspective.

Recreational fisheries represent a pivotal leisure industry in most countries with coastlines, making substantial contributions to economic growth and social welfare. Spatial spillover effects remain less well explored in the existing research on the sustainability of recreational fisheries. In this study, we develop a framework to assess the sustainability of recreational fisheries across the coast of China from 2010 to 2019. We examine the driving factors and mechanisms sustaining recreational fisheries using a spatial Durbin model. The results reveal an overall upward trend in the sustainability index of China's coastal recreational fisheries, with several notable regional differences. Furthermore, we found that recreational fishery sustainability exhibited spatial dependency across coastal provinces. The sustainability was influenced by both local factors and spillover effects from neighboring regions. The local factors ranked in order by direct effect coefficients from highest to lowest were consumption capability, travel convenience, policy, fishery management, urbanization, and environment. Indirect effect coefficients indicated that the degree of travel convenience and fishery development of neighboring regions had positive spillover effects, whereas consumption capability and tourism had negative effects. These findings offer new insights into the mechanisms influencing recreational fishery sustainability, information that is vital for effective coastal management and the sustainable development of recreational fisheries. Industrial flour served as a classical filler in wood industry for many years. However, its high-cost and competition for use as food stuff paved the way to a novel substitution tactic by using agriculture and forestry waste residues. Camellia oleifera shell and palm kernel meal are both by-products of oil-refining with advantages such as wide availability, great-reserve, renewability, and low-cost. Herein, a compound filler strategy was proposed by combining Camellia oleifera shell powder (Cosp) and palm kernel meal (PKM) to solve some drawbacks while Cosp as a single filler. The results showed that the bonding performance of plywood incorporating 20% single Cosp modified MUF was inferior with respect to MUF modified by same amount of industrial flour, due to the significantly increased viscosity, leading to a decrease in wet shear strength (1.63 MPa and 1.47 MPa for cold and hot-water soaking pretreatment, respectively). Encouraged, the overall status (including the viscosity, gel time, and solid content) of MUF modified by the compound filler displayed is regarded the best formulation for Coaps to PKM weight ratio of 5:5. Therefore, the wet shear strength for derived plywood samples with the adhesive incorporating 20% filler content, can reach 1.90 MPa and 1.88 MPa for cold and hot-water soaking pre-treatment, respectively. Interestingly, this bonding performance is similar to MUF resin modified by industrial flour. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to further confirm the potency of the compound filler modification strategy. Furthermore, the formaldehyde emission of MUF resin modified by the compound filler was effectively reduced by 8.24–14.12%, compared to industrial flour as filler. Cosp and PKM, as agricultural and forestry waste residue, exhibited the cost advantage for this approach based on calculation, which can save the cost of adhesive by over 40% for filler. The strategy for employing this compound filler provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for green application of waste residues obtained from agriculture and forestry. • A fully bio-based compound filler consisted by Cosp and PKM was prepared. • The Cosp and PKM modified MUF maintained the outstanding bonding performance. • The formaldehyde release of MUF with Cosp and PKM filler was reduced by 8.24–14.12%. • The cost of filler utilized in MUF resin would go down by 40%. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) have emerged as an innovative model for the delivery of infrastructure and public services on a global scale. These collaborations, which unite businesses, governmental bodies, and civil society stakeholders, are actively advocated for their capacity to pool essential financial resources. Simultaneously, they offer a strategic approach to mitigating risks associated with sector-specific operations and addressing intricate developmental challenges. PPPs leverages wider resources and capabilities and could have greater impacts, which have been widely adopted in various sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and environment. In recent years, PPPs have also emerged as a promising tool to promote the development of aquaculture sector, which is the fastest growing food production sector in the world. However, PPPs in aquaculture sector have yet not to be widely adopted or well understood. We address this research gap by describing a successful PPP model in aquaculture sector based on a case study of Hani Terrace integrated rice-fish farming system in China. This research analyzes the type, structures, partner roles and partnership of the Hani Terrace PPP model, and it also examines the major challenges encountered and the development outcomes achieved by these projects. The results showed that the Aquaculture PPP created positive outcomes for different parterners and stimulated increased economic, social and environmental benefits from targeted interventions. This research intends to offer valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and local communities keen on advancing the PPP model within the aquaculture sector. Additionally, the research identifies gaps and outlines directions for future studies in PPP development in the aquaculture sector. 10. Senegal's fisheries policies: Evolution and performance.

Abstract In 2016, Senegal's fisheries contributed 14.63% of total value of export earnings, representing 3.2% of Gross Domestic Product and employed an estimated 600,000 people, of which 30% were women. It is very important for Senegal to establish an effective policy system and protect its valuable fisheries resources. To realize this goal, scientists, government officials, and related parties should critically reflect upon fisheries policies and their performance. Given the high institutional instability in the country, this paper discusses the various policies adopted during different Senegalese political regimes, their evolution, and their implementation. This study also assesses how these policies impacted the availability of fishery resources in the country, and changed fishermen's behavior and income. We find that although some policies are effective, the overall policy system is still in dire need to be improved, as fisheries are still experiencing a downward trend due to illegal fishing and overfishing. We also find that the motorization of pirogues contributed to increasing the catch volumes and the extension of fishing areas. However, the signs of declining volumes of landings noted in the 1981s prompted the authorities to take advantage of specific management measures and regulations for the protection and restoration of habitats and overexploited marine resources. We propose a model of policy formulation based on stakeholder theory that deals realistically with issues of over-exploitation and illegal fishing, where all the interested parties should strongly participate in the decision-making process. 11. The evolution of information and communications technology in the fishery industry: The pathway for marine sustainability.

There is reason for concern, given the history of technology in the seas. Too often, the extinction and contamination of marine species have been exacerbated by technical advancements and more potent fisheries equipment. By considering the roles of fisheries production, information and communication technology, human capital, governance, carbon dioxide emissions, and economic growth from 1990 to 2022, this paper seeks to investigate the dynamic effect of ICT on the sustainability of the fisheries industry in 27 European countries. The findings showed a substantial positive link between information and communication technology and the fisheries sector at higher quantiles using the new Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) with fixed effects. Additionally, in the EU27 nations, the impact of economic growth was favorably significant across most quantiles. The findings show that the EU14 developed nations have greater ICT and economic development than the EU13 underdeveloped countries, which significantly benefits fisheries sustainability. At lower quantiles, the data revealed a significant positive association between human capital and the fisheries sector. Results show that developing countries in the EU13 have more significant human capital than industrialized nations in the EU14, which considerably benefits fisheries sustainability. On the other hand, across all quantiles in the EU27 area, the findings revealed a substantial positive link between carbon dioxide emissions and the fisheries sector. EU14 developed countries have a larger significant positive magnitude between carbon dioxide emissions and fisheries output than the EU13 underdeveloped nations. To accomplish sustainable development objectives, this study provides policymakers insight into how to encourage technological transmission factors in the EU14 and EU13 nations via effective and environmentally friendly technology in the fisheries sector. • A strong positive association between ICT and fisheries sustainability in the EU region • Governance shows a positive and substantial linkage with fisheries sector development in EU 13 nations. • Fisheries and economic growth were also found to condense fisheries sustainability in EU14 economic. • CO2 was found to increase fisheries sustainability across all quantiles in EU region. Background Aquatic products processing industry (APPI) in China has been developing for several decades and is becoming a pillar sector in China's fisheries industry. There are some problems in the development of this industry, such as significantly lower-than-world-average APP ratio, improper regional structures, weakly development in freshwater products processing, and lower profit margin from processing. Scope and approach This study aims to provide a whole picture of China's aquatic products processing (APP) Industry. It also describes an overview of the development of aquatic product industry and evolutions of policies and regulation in China. Key findings and conclusions The findings indicated China's Aquatic product industry has progressed significantly in the past decades. The total products of the APPI gradually increased from 0.6 million tons in 1978 to 20 million tons in 2014. The ratio between aquatic products processing output and aquatic products output rose from 0.13 in 1996 to 0.32 in 2014, and the number of processing firms substantially increased during this period. Since 2004, the quality of the APPI gradually improved, and the APPI value-added rate increased from 29.76% in 2004 to 37.28% in 2014. Some remarkable issues still exist in the process of APPI. Further policies need to focus on better industrial development planning, favorable tax for intensive processing sectors, as well as reinforced R&D and policy supports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Octopus vulgaris is fished by both small-scale and industrial fleets and has great social and economic value. Octopuses are fished in intertidal and subtidal areas using various fishing gear, with trawling used by industrial fleets and hand jigs, pots, traps, and trammel nets used by small-scale fleets. Over the years, the octopus has consistently been one of the most important commercial cephalopod resources in Senegal. Given the high economic value of octopus in Senegal, this paper discusses octopus management, as well as the industry's direct impacts on the biological traits of octopus. Survey data reveals that there are some differences in the octopus management preferences within Mbour; however, in general, fishers support biological rest and the use of octopus spawning pots. This study examines the socioeconomic importance of octopus and their management by scientifically analyzing the octopus fishery in Senegal. Octopuses have a short life span (12–14 months), grow rapidly, and have high natural mortality due to its sensitivity to environmental conditions. Therefore, the abundance index decreased from 13.7 kg per days at sea in 1999 to 3.3 kg per days at sea in 2016 due to seasonal fluctuations. Meanwhile, landing volumes notably increased from 2980 t in 1997 to 5932 t in 2016. Octopuses are typically destined for the European and Asian markets, with an export volume of 4886 t and gross revenue of US$26 million in 2016. However, this species is fully exploited, demonstrating the need for increased involvement of fishers in the management decision-making process. • Octopus is fully-exploited by small-scale and industrial fishing. • Biological rest is the ideal measure for octopus protection. • Octopus is a short life span and large variations of landing volumes. • The price fluctuations depend on the weight and size of the species. • The increase in the income is due to the variation of season.
