Abstract

With the compelling evidence for massive neutrinos from recent ν-oscillation experiments, one of the most fundamental tasks of particle physics over the next years will be the determination of the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, which has crucial implications for cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. A next generation tritium β decay experiment, the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN), is proposed to reach a sub eV sensitivity on the absolute mass of the electron neutrino. Abstract

One of the most important tasks in neutrino physics is to determine the neutrino mass scale to distinguish between hierarchical and degenerate neutrino mass models and to clarify the role of neutrinos in the early universe. The current tritium β decay experiments at Mainz and Troitsk are reaching their sensitivity limit. The synchronous measurements at Mainz and Troitsk show that the “Troitsk anomaly” is an experimental artefact. The different options for a next generation direct neutrino mass experiment with sub-eV sensitivity are discussed. The KATRIN experiment, which will investigate the tritium β spectrum with a 1 eV resolution MAC-E-Filter, is being prepared to reach a sub-eV sensitivity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: Photo-absorption of in thin Al, Co, Ti, and Mo convertors was examined with the aim to produce quasi monoenergetic photoelectrons having an energy spread of 0.5–4.7eV about mean kinetic energies at discrete values between 18632 and 80321eV. The photoelectron rates were estimated for commercial photon sources of 241Am, 119mSn, 125mTe and 109Cd with activities of 0.55–3.7GBq. Photoelectrons ejected by 241Am and X-rays from Co convertors were measured with two different electron spectrometers and obtained energy spectra were compared with Monte Carlo predictions. Abstract

Abstract: For the neutrino mass determination experiment KATRIN, the long-term stability of the spectrometer voltage is of crucial importance. Therefore, it is planned to control the voltage continuously in a smaller spectrometer, which monitors the position of the conversion electron line emitted in the 32keV transition in the decay of 83mKr. Due to the short half-life of 83mKr (t 1/2=1.83h), it has to be supplied by a long-lived 83mKr(83Rb) generator (t 1/2=86d). Here, a hitherto unexploited method for the efficient production of 83Rb and its suitability for its application in the KATRIN monitor spectrometer is described. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: The standard model of the electroweak interaction describes β-decay in the well-known V–A form. Nevertheless, the most general Hamiltonian of a β-decay includes also other possible interaction types, e.g. scalar (S) and tensor (T) contributions, which are not fully ruled out yet experimentally. The WITCH experiment aims to study a possible admixture of these exotic interaction types in nuclear β-decay by a precise measurement of the shape of the recoil ion energy spectrum. The experimental set-up couples a double Penning trap system and a retardation spectrometer. The set-up is installed in ISOLDE/CERN and was recently shown to be fully operational. The current status of the experiment is presented together with the data acquired during the 2006 campaign, showing the first recoil ion energy spectrum obtained. The data taking procedure and corresponding data acquisition system are described in more detail. Several further technical improvements are briefly reviewed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
