Eleutheronema Tetradactylum is commercially important marine fish and a fixture at tables. However, nonnegligible hazardous substances, such as heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs), generates along during thermal processing. Herein, we determined HAAs and two representative AGEs, Nε-carboxyethyl-lysine (CEL) and Nε-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML) formation in roasted Eleutheronema Tetradactylum , and proposed inhibitory method of tea polyphenol to effectively reduce HAAs, CML and CEL, which caused 51.23, 46.72, 24.06 and 35.48 percentage reduction of Norharman, Harman, CML and CEL, respectively, led IQ, 8-MeIQx below detected limitation. Precursors (amino acids, creatin(in)e, glucose and glyoxal), lipid oxidation, fatty acid analysis and further nontargeted lipidomic approaches are attempted to reveal the inhibition mechanism. This work develops a new method to minimize HAAs and AGEs in Eleutheronema Tetradactylum , provide a comprehensive interpretation of inhibition mechanism by tea polyphenols, which is helpful to food manufacturers for healthier fish production. Background: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), which refers to a cognitive impairment subsequent to surgical procedures, is a common complication in the elderly subjects. This study aimed to investigate potential risk factors for POCD in elderly subjects undergoing hip joint arthroplasty.Methods: Consecutive elderly osteoarthritis patients who were scheduled to undergo hip arthroplasty under epidural anesthesia were enrolled into this single-center, prospective observational study. Serum phosphorylated neurofilament heavy subunit-H (pNF-H) was measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. A level of >70.5 pg/mL was accepted as pNF-H positivity. Neuropsychological assessment at baseline (1 day before the surgery) and postoperative day 7 was conducted. POCD was defined according to the calculated Z scores. Risk factors for POCD were evaluated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.Results: In final, 287 patients were enrolled, and 55 had suffered POCD within postoperative 7 days with an incidence of 19.2%. The final multiple logistic regression analysis revealed a higher pNF-H positivity was the only independent risk factor for POCD (odds ratio: 2.03, 95% confidence interval: 1.21-3.29, P = .012).Conclusions: Our results revealed an increased preoperative serum pNF-H expression was an independent risk factor for POCD development in elderly subjects undergoing hip joint arthroplasty, suggesting the close association between anatomical damage in central nervous system and POCD. • A novel route was developed to inhibit HAAs and AGEs in roasted mackerel by adding vegetable extracts. • Vegetable extracts can not only promoting quality and avoiding nutrition loss of mackerel. • Variation of precursors revealed the involved HAAs inhibition mechanism. The formation of hazardous substances, heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs), in roasted mackerel with different cooking temperatures (180, 210, 240 °C) and vegetable extracts (celery, carrot and yam extracts) in a preheated oven was investigated. The results indicated that the introduction of vegetable extracts had inhibitory effects on HAAs and AGEs during thermal processing, especially celery extracts. Benefiting from the addition of vegetable extracts, the roasted mackerel keep high quality against lipid/protein oxidation, avoids nutrition loss of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and flavor is promoted. We also examined the variation of key precursors, including creatine, creatinine, reducing sugars, amino acids and attempted to explain the molecular pathway of inhibition of the formation of the hazardous substances by vegetable extracts. The results provide theoretical support to develop technologies for inhibiting hazardous substances formation during fish processing, which is important for food manufacturers and consumers for producing healthier meat products. Abstract: A reverse dispersion fiber (RDF) with depressed core-index profile has been developed successfully by using plasma chemical vapor deposition (PCVD) process. The fabricated RDF has a core-effective-area of 45μm2, a dispersion of −19.65ps/nm/km and a dispersion slope of −0.132ps/nm2/km while maintaining the low bending induced attenuation and low PMD value. The dispersion-managed pairs, which consisted of RDF and non-zero dispersion shifted fiber with ultra large effective core-area (ULAF), have the ultra low dispersion slope of less than 0.006ps/nm2/km at the wavelength range of 1530–1625nm, and the largest dispersion value is lower than 0.2ps/nm/km. Moreover, the attenuation characteristic also shows a remarkable flatness over the broadband wavelength, the attenuation at 1550nm is only 0.224dB/km. The dispersion-managed pairs are suitable for large capacity, high bit-rate long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system without using dispersion compensation mode. Abstract: Based on the biomimetic route the metal material with tree-like fractal structure was prepared, which showed a rough surface observed by scanning electron microscopy. According to the electrochemical experiments, the formed material exhibited the strong catalytic capability as an electrode in hydrogen evolution reaction, comparing with other conventional structure materials under comparable scales. We suggested this promotion of property arose from the contribution of the great surface area and the excellent connectivity offered from the fractal structure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber based on a depressed core-index for the large capacities and high bit-rate transmission system is designed and fabricated. The fiber with this structure has the effective-core-area (Aeff) of more than 100 μm2 and dispersion slope of less than 0.065 ps/nm2/km at 1.55 μm wavelength simultaneously while maintaining the good bending loss. The zero-dispersion wavelength is shifted to lower than 1430 nm, so this fiber can be used on not only the conventional C-band (1530–1565 nm), but also S-band (1460–1530 nm) and L-band (1565–1625 nm) for dense wavelength division multiplexing. In addition, the designed fiber has a low polarization mode dispersion of about 0.04 ps/√ of km and an attenuation of around 0.21 dB/km at 1550 nm, the splice loss with conventional single mode fiber is less than 0.11 dB. The large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea) is one of the most commercially important marine fish in China and is a fixture at Chinese tables. Herein, we determined the formation of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) in roasted yellow croaker and evaluated the inhibitory effect of natural fruits extracts (blueberry extract, acerola cherry extract and grape seed extract) on the formation of HAAs in roast yellow croaker. All the three fruit extracts treatments minimize the amount of HAAs and the addition of blueberries extracts is the most effective approach on reducing the total HAAs content, which caused a signification reduction of 94.85% and 71.15% of the Norhaman and PhIP content, respectively, led IQ, 8-MeIQX, 4,8-DiMeIQX below the detected limitation, compared to the control group. Furthermore, antioxidant index of fruits extracts, precursors (free amino acids, creatine, creatinine and glucose) of HAAs, lipid and protein oxidation, flavor changes are evaluated to determine the mechanism and physical/chemical changes of fruit extracts on the formation of HAAs. This study was designed to investigate the role of pericytes in the pathogenesis of perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND). In this study, we established a PND model via sevoflurane anesthesia and tibial fracture surgery in 2-month-old and 16-month-old male C57BL/6 mice. On the third postoperative day, the mice were subjected to behavioral testing or sacrificed to collect brain tissue. The progression of hippocampal blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption and neuroinflammation was detected using transmission electron microscope and immunofluorescence. We also used western blotting to measure the levels of plasma-derived protein immunoglobulin G (IgG) and albumin in the hippocampus to assess the leakage of the BBB. Aged mice did not experience age-related cognitive decline and BBB disruption compared with younger mice but only increased glial cell activity. Anesthesia/Surgery damaged cognitive function, reduced pericyte coverage, decreased the length of capillaries and levels of occludin and claudin-5, destroyed the structure of the BBB, exacerbated IgG and albumin accumulation in the hippocampus, and enhanced the activation of microglia and astrocytes in the hippocampus of aged mice. However, these negative effects did not occur in young mice. Our study showed that the loss of pericytes led to increased BBB permeability and neuroinflammation after anesthesia/surgery in aged mice, ultimately resulting in cognitive dysfunction. • Anesthesia/surgery results in loss of pericyte in the hippocampus of aged mice. • Anaesthesia/surgery had little effect on pericyte coverage in young mice. • The destruction of blood-brain barrier after surgery is related to the pericyte loss. • Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is caused by pericyte loss. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism by which Newcastle disease virus (NDV) affects eggshell quality. Thirty-week-old specific pathogen free (SPF) egg-laying hens were inoculated with the velogenic genotype VIId NDV strain (infected group) or with inoculating media without virus (control group) by combined intraocular and intranasal routes. The levels of CaBP-D28k mRNA expression in the uterus, a gene related to eggshell quality, were examined by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The quality of eggshells was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The infected group showed a marked decline in egg production when compared to the control group. The NDV antigen was found more abundantly in the glandular epithelium of the infected hens' uteri from 1 to 15 d post-inoculation (dpi). The levels of CaBP-D28k mRNA expression in the uteri of infected hens were significantly lower than in the control hens from 3 to 15 dpi ( P < 0.05). The changes in the Ca concentrations in the eggshells were consistent with the expression of CaBP-D28k mRNA in the infected hens. Ultrastructural examination of eggshells showed significantly reduced shell thickness in the infected hens from 1 to 15 dpi ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, obvious changes in the structure of the external shell surface and shell membrane were detected in the infected hens compared with the control hens. In conclusion, the current study confirmed that velogenic genotype VIId NDV infection is associated with the deterioration of the eggshell quality of the laying hens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pain is a complex experience that comprises both sensory and affective dimensions. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays an important role in the modulation of neuronal plasticity associated with the pathogenesis of pain sensation. However, the role of mTOR in pain affect is unclear. Using a formalin-induced conditioned place avoidance (F-CPA) test, the current study investigated the effects of the mTOR specific inhibitor rapamycin on noxious stimulation induced aversion in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC). Intraplantar injection of 5% formalin was associated with significant activation of mTOR, as well as p70 ribosomal S6 protein (p70S6K), its downstream effector, in the rACC. The inhibition of mTOR activation with rapamycin disrupted pain-related aversion; however, this inhibition did not affect formalin-induced spontaneous nociceptive behaviors in rats. These findings demonstrated for the first time that mTOR and its downstream pathway in the rACC contribute to the induction of pain-related negative emotion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
