• Although mentorship is not new to nursing, little is known about the state of mentorship in Nigeria nursing. • Mentorship needs of young Nigeria nurses include career, leadership and administration, research and scholarship, professional, practitioner, political and psychological issues. • We hereby recommend the development of a structured, need-specific mentorship program to meet the mentorship needs of this population. Mentorship is crucial for young nurses' professional and academic advancement. Evidence suggests that mentorship has led to the expansion of professional networks, provided career development opportunities, and improved the self-confidence of young nurses. Although mentorship is not new to nursing, little is known about the state of mentorship in Nigeria nursing. While we are interested in developing a mentorship program for young nurses in Nigeria, we currently lack evidence to guide this development. The objective of the study was to explore the career experiences, challenges and mentorship needs of young nurses and to assess their perception of and level of involvement in mentorship. A mixed-method study was conducted using the convergent parallel design. A cross-sectional survey and a descriptive in-depth interview were conducted. Quantitative data collected via online survey were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Young nurses totaling twenty-eight were interviewed, while 260 others participated in the survey. Majority of the respondents (92.3%) agreed that mentorship is in scarce supply in Nigeria. Overall, 78.8% had high mentorship needs, and 80% were not part of any structured mentorship program. The challenges experienced included inadequate career guidance, poor psychological support, an unsupportive academic environment, poor clinical mentorship, conflict between older and younger nurses, and poor clinical mentorship. Mentorship needs included career, leadership and administration, research and scholarship, professional, practitioner, political and psychological issues. The participants were willing to be part of a structured mentorship program. Although young nurses were encumbered with varying challenges, these challenges are not insurmountable. To examine the relationship of 25hydroxyvitamin D serum levels with BPPV incidence and recurrence rates. A retrospective cross-sectional, case-controlled study with follow-up phone survey was performed on patients diagnosed with BPPV between 05/2017-05/2020, who had available 25hydroxyvitamin D serology. Patients were seen at a multidisciplinary, vestibular-focused, neurotology clinic at a tertiary referral center. Controls consisted of subjects from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and a locoregional age, sex, and race-matched group of patients from our institution. Our BPPV cohort consisted of 173 patients (mean age 66.2 ± 11.8 years), who were predominately female (75.7%) and Caucasian (76.3%). Almost all age subgroups (BPPV, NHANES, and locoregional groups) ≤60 years old had insufficient levels of vitamin D. However, the overall BPPV cohort had a significantly higher vitamin D level than the NHANES control (31.4 ± 16.5 v. 26.0 ± 11.2 ng/mL, d=0.474 [0.323, 0.626]). There was no significant difference when compared to the overall locoregional control (31.4 ± 20.5 ng/mL). Migraines were significantly correlated to increased BPPV recurrence rates on univariate (beta=0.927, p=0.037, 95% CI: [0.057, 1.798]) and multiple regression analyses (beta=0.231, 95% CI: [0.024, 2.029], p=0.045). Furthermore, patients with BPPV recurrences had significantly lower levels of vitamin D at initial presentation when compared to patients with no recurrences (29.0 ± 12.0 v. 37.6 ± 18.3 ng/mL, d=0.571[0.139,1.001]). Many BPPV patients in our cohort had insufficient vitamin D levels, and patients with BPPV recurrences had insufficient and significantly lower vitamin D levels than those without. As a readily available and affordable supplement, vitamin D may be used as an adjunct treatment but prospective studies should be done to confirm if it can prevent or reduce recurrence. Analysis of in-hospital and long-term results of carotid endarterectomy (CEE) in patients with different severity of coronary atherosclerosis. This comparative, retrospective, open study for the period from January 2013 to April 2020 included 1719 patients operated on for occlusive-stenotic lesions of the internal carotid arteries (ICA). Classical and eversion CEA were used as revascularization strategies. The criteria for inclusion in the study were: 1. Presence of coronary angiography within six months before the present CEE; 2. A history of myocardial revascularization in patients with severe coronary lesions. Depending on the severity of coronary atherosclerosis, all patients were divided into 3 groups: Group 1–871 (50.7 %) patients – with the presence of hemodynamically significant stenosis of the coronary arteries (CA) with a history of myocardial revascularization; Group 2–496 (28.8 %) patients – with the presence of hemodynamically insignificant lesions of the coronary artery (up to 70 %, not inclusive, and the trunk of the left coronary artery, up to 50 %, not inclusive); Group 3–352 (20.5 %) patients – without signs of atherosclerotic lesions of the coronary artery. In group 1, the observation period was 56.8±23.2 months, in group 2–62.0±15.6 months, in group 3–58.1±20.4 months. During the hospital observation period, there were no significant intergroup differences in the number of complications. All cardiovascular events were detected in isolated cases. The most common injury was damage to the cranial nerves, diagnosed in every fifth patient in the total sample. The combined endpoint (CET), including death + myocardial infarction (MI) + acute cerebrovascular accident/transient ischemic attack (stroke/TIA), was 0.75 % (n =13). In the long-term follow-up period, when comparing survival curves, group 3 revealed the largest number of ischemic strokes (p = 0.007), myocardial infarction (p = 0.03), and CCT (p = 0.005). There were no intergroup differences in the number of deaths (p =0.62). The results of the study showed that there was no significant intergroup difference in the development of complications at the hospital postoperative stage. However, in the long-term follow-up period, a group of patients with isolated lesions of the ICA demonstrated a rapid increase in the number of MI, stroke/TIA, and a combined endpoint, which was apparently associated with low compliance and progression of atherosclerosis in previously unaffected arteries. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious threat in underdeveloped areas. Mycobacterium tuberculosis curli pili (MTP), a virulence factor, is a potential biomarker for a reliable point of care (POC) test and was evaluated for its ability to react with Immunoglobulin G (IgG) in TB patients. An MTP synthetic peptide in a slot blot assay was used to screen serum/plasma samples (n = 65) in 3 separate cohorts, including 40 TB positive (16 HIV co-infected), 20 TB negative/HIV negative patients and 5 healthy volunteers. Forty samples were true positives (HIV positive, n = 16), 23 true negatives (HIV negative) and 2 false positives (HIV negative). The McNemar test demonstrated a 3.08% accuracy estimate (CI: −2.1% - 3.08%). This confirms that MTP is expressed during infection, including HIV-TB co-infection, is likely to be suitable for the design of a POC test and supports the validation of MTP for TB detection in larger patient populations. Response surface methodology (RSM), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and artificial neural network (ANN) were tested in the modeling of acid pretreatment of palm kernel oil with a very high acid value (22 ± 0.1 mg KOH/g oil). This was investigated considering methanol/oil molar ratio (1.3:1–3.8:1), catalyst loading (0.3–0.5 vol.%) and time (20–40 min) using Box Behnken design. The developed RSM, ANFIS and ANN models described the process with high accuracy (coefficient of determination, R 2 > 0.99 and average absolute deviation, AAD = 2.72–23.96%). RSM, RSM coupled with generic algorithm (GA), ANFIS-GA and ANN-GA were applied to optimize the process for best operating condition and ANN-GA gave the minimum acid value (0.64 mg KOH/g) under the best optimal condition of methanol/oil molar ratio 3.4:1, catalyst loading 0.39 vol.% and time 24.06 min. Based on the statistical indices obtained, RSM performed the least, while ANN marginally outperformed ANFIS. GA proved to be superior to RSM in the optimization of the esterification process. Background: As daily engagement with social networking sites (SNS) increases globally, identifying and understanding the risk factors associated with problematic SNS use is of utmost importance. Researchers are interested in understanding internalizing symptoms as both a risk factor and a negative consequence of problematic SNS use. Prior research has proposed rumination alongside internalizing symptoms as a risk factor, though limited research has examined these associations across different cultures.Objective: The present study examined the indirect associations between internalizing symptoms (specifically depressive and social anxiety symptoms) and problematic SNS use via rumination among a cross-cultural sample.Method: Participants were 8,912 (70.8 % female; Mean age = 20.25, SD = 3.95) college students recruited across seven countries (U.S., Canada, Spain, England, Argentina, Uruguay, and South Africa) who completed measures of internalizing symptoms, rumination, weekly SNS use, and problematic SNS use.Results: We found that higher internalizing symptoms were associated with more problematic SNS use via higher ruminative thinking. Specifically, problem-focused thoughts (a rumination subtype) uniquely accounted for 22.89% and 28.15% of the total effect of depressive and social anxiety symptoms on problematic SNS use, respectively. Other rumination subtypes (i.e., anticipatory thoughts and repetitive thinking) also demonstrated significant indirect effects, though weaker effects than for problem-focused thoughts. Findings were invariant across countries.Conclusions: These findings provide support for further exploring the role rumination plays in determining and comparing problematic SNS use cross-culturally in longitudinal and experimental work. Resumo Paciente do sexo feminino, 58 anos, sem fator de risco cardiovascular, submetida a cirurgia para reparação do manguito rotador. A indução do bloqueio do plexo braquial interescalênico foi feita sem intercorrência, mas, após seu posicionamento para a cirurgia, a paciente apresentou broncoespasmo grave, hipotensão, reação alérgica cutânea e elevação do segmento ST ao eletrocardiograma. Houve suspeita de choque anafilático que foi tratado, mas até que a perfusão de nitroglicerina fosse iniciada não houve resolução das alterações eletrocardiográficas. Após teste diagnóstico necessário, o diagnóstico final foi de variante tipo I da síndrome de Kounis por causa de cefazolina e rocurônio. Epinefrina é a base sólida do tratamento para anafilaxia, mas devemos usá‐la se a reação anafilática também for acompanhada de isquemia miocárdica? A resposta é que não devemos usá‐la, porque a isquemia miocárdica nessa síndrome é causada por vasoespasmo; portanto, drogas como a nitroglicerina seriam mais úteis. Porém, e quando não sabemos se é ou não uma síndrome de Kounis? Neste artigo relatamos nossa experiência que, talvez, possa ajudar em uma situação similar. A 58‐year‐old female without cardiovascular risk factors, was going to be operated to repair the rotator cuff. Induction and interscalene brachial plexus block were uneventful, but after her placement for surgery the patient started with severe bronchospasm, hypotension, cutaneous allergic reaction and ST elevation on the electrocardiogram. An anaphylactic shock was suspected and treated but until the perfusion of nitroglycerina was started no electrocardiographic changes resolved. After necessary diagnostic test the final diagnosis was variant I of Kounis syndrome due to cefazolin and rocuronium. Ephinephrine is the cornerstone of treatment for anaphylaxis but should we use it if the anaphylactic reaction is also accompanied by myocardial ischemia? The answer is that we should not use it because myocardial ischemia in this syndrome is caused by vasospasm, so it would be more useful drugs such as nitroglycerin. Pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii Cano is the most harmful insect pest of pepper, Capsicum annum L., an important crop in Florida and several other states in the southern region of the United States. All commercially cultivated peppers, including jalapeño peppers, are susceptible to pepper weevil. The use of broad-spectrum insecticides is the primary management tool for controlling pepper weevil. Their continuous use has led to the development of resistance and elimination of natural enemies. Therefore, alternative approaches are needed for effective control. Studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of intercropping non-host insect repellent plants (Ocimum basilicum L. (basil), Tagetes patula L. (marigold), Brassica oleracea L. (cabbage), and Coriandrum sativum L. (cilantro)) with jalapeño pepper on pepper weevil population suppression. Each of the four non-host plants consisted of individual treatments and were compared to a jalapeño pepper only (untreated control), or a jalapeño pepper with a standard insecticide regimen of thiamethoxam (positive control). Parameters evaluated include the number of pepper weevil adults on plants, number of infested fallen fruit, and marketable yield. Infested fruit collected from each treatment plot were dissected to evaluate pepper weevil (adult, pupae, and larvae) density. The non-host plant treatments reduced the number of pepper weevil adults found on jalapeño plants, infested fruit, and pepper weevils in infested fruit but not marketable yield when compared with the control treatment. Staphylococcus aureus is a zoonotic pathogen of significant public health concern. Information on the prevalence and risk factors facilitating bacterial colonization and spread under abattoir settings in Nigeria are scarce. This cross-sectional study was designed to determine prevalence of S. aureus as well as risk factors on knowledge and practices facilitating pathogen carriage among workers and slaughter animals in two municipal abattoirs of Ilorin and Ibadan, Nigeria. Swab samples (n = 1671) from nostrils of cattle, goats, pigs and abattoir workers, and from meat tables and abattoir walls were collected for detection of S. aureus . A questionnaire was administered to 275 workers to elucidate risk factors of pathogen carriage applying a logistic regression model. S. aureus prevalence was 6.5%. In total, MSSA and MRSA were detected at a frequency of 5.4% and 1.1%. Molecular analysis of the isolates revealed 19 different spa types, including a novel spa type (t16751). Gender, marital status, occupation and abattoir location were factors influencing worker’s practices in relation to pathogen carriage and spread in the abattoir setting. This present study detected not only low MSSA and MRSA prevalence, in both abattoirs but also low risk perception and hygiene practices employed by abattoir workers. Good practices among workers at Nigerian abattoirs are needed to mitigate S. aureus carriage. Further studies expounding the antibiotic resistance and relationships of MSSA and MRSA strains detected in this study are needed to complement understanding of the spread of S. aureus in the abattoir food chain. Ku 70/80 is a regulator of the Non-Homologous End Joining (NHEJ) roles in clinicopathological features, and has prognostic significance in breast cancer (BC) in Caucasian populations. However, its significance in the Nigerian BC population, which is characterized by a higher rate of the triple-negative and basal phenotype, p53 mutation rate and BRCA1 deficiency, still needs to be investigated. We hypothesize that Ku70/80 expression shows adverse expression in Nigerian BC and, furthermore, that it is likely to have a therapeutic implication for Black BC management. This study investigated the biological, clinicopathological and prognostic significance of Ku 70/80 expression in a BC cohort from a Nigerian population. Ku 70/80 expression was determined in 188 well-characterized formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) BC samples using tissue microarray and immunohistochemistry. Ku 70/80 expression was correlated with clinicopathological, molecular and prognostic characteristics of patients. Ku 70/80 was expressed in 113 (60.1%) tumors, and was positively associated with metastatic disease, triple-negative and basal phenotype, BRCA1 down regulators (MTA-1 and ID4), p-cadherin, PI3KCA and p53 expression. It inversely correlated with BRCA1, BRCA2, BARD1 and p27. Ku 70/80 was predictive of breast cancer-specific survival in multivariate analysis, but not of disease-free interval. This study demonstrated that Ku 70/80 expression is associated with triple negativity and down-regulation of the homologous recombination pathway of DNA repair. The effect of rice husk flour (RHF) supplementation on the physicochemical properties, oxidative stability, and sensory attributes of beef sausages was examined. Beef sausages were formulated with either 0 % RHF + 15 % wheat flour (WF), RHF-0; 5 % RHF + 10 % WF, RHF-5; 10 % RHF + 5 % WF, RHF-10, or 15 % RHF + 0 % WF, RHF-15, and cooked at 200 °C for 20 min. RHF supplementation significantly increased dietary fiber while decreasing moisture content (P < 0.05). Beef sausages with RHF had lower L* , a* , TBARS, carbonyl content, hardness, chewiness, and gumminess, and a higher pH (P < 0.05). RHF-10 and RHF-15 sausages exhibited greater cook loss compared to other formulations (P < 0.05). The levels of 7-ketocholesterol decreased with increasing RHF levels, while 7α-hydroxycholesterol and 7-hydroperoxycholesterol were higher in RHF-0 and RHF-10 sausages compared to RHF-5 and RHF-15 sausages (P < 0.05). In addition, RHF improved the taste, juiciness, appearance, and overall acceptance of beef sausages. As a result of the transformation of the initial ligand m -Cl-benzoyl- β -(piperidin-1-yl)propioamidoxime during complexation, a nontrivial Cu(II) ionic complex is formed, which simultaneously contains two different formula units {Cu(phen) 2 Cl}+ and {Cu(phen) 2 benz}+. [Display omitted] Two cationic and molecular copper(II) complexes - mixed ligand [{Cu(phen) 2 benz}{Cu(phen) 2 Cl}]2+·2Cl-·benz-·H 3 O+·4·.5H 2 O (1), [Cu(benz) 2 phen] (2) (benz- = m- Cl-benzoate anion; phen = 1,10-phenantroline) and [Cu(phen) 3 ]2+·2OTf-·2EtOH (3) (OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate, triflate anion, CF 3 SO 3 -) were synthesized using various synthetic approaches and thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structures of the complexes according to X-ray diffraction data are characterized by a diverse geometric environment of the complexing agent - the cationic form of 1 comprises two structurally nonequivalent moieties: the Cu (1) and Cu (2) complex-forming atoms coordinate, in chelate manner, two phen moieties each and the benz- (1)/Cl- (2) anions, respectively, thus forming different-ligand formula units, a trigonal–bipyramidal {Cu(1)N 4 Cl} and a pseudo octahedral one {Cu(2)N 4 O 2 }. The copper(II) ion in the complex 2 coordinates one phen ligand in a bidentate mode and two benz- anions to produce a distorted planar square environment {CuN 2 O 2 }. In complex 3 , the copper(II) cation is surrounded by three phenanthroline fragments {Cu(phen) 3 }2+ and non-coordinated OTf- ions. The results of an EPR study 1 show that in the solid phase, intermolecular exchange interactions that cause exchange narrowing of the spectrum are efficient, whereas in solutions, resolved spectra of copper(II) ion with rhombic symmetry of the g-tensor are observed. An in vitro study of the biological properties of 1 – 3 toward nonpathogenic mycobacterial strain Mycolicibacterium smegmatis showed an increase in biological effectiveness depending on the structure of complexes (MIC, 1 (2 nmol/disk) > 3 (5 nmol/disk) > 2 (12.5 nmol/disk)). Complex 1 was also tested for antitumor activity against an ovarian adenocarcinoma SKOV3 demonstrated high efficiency: the IC 50 value is almost 9 times higher than the activity of cisplatin. Abstract Typical enteropathogenic E. coli (tEPEC) carries the highest hazard of death in children with diarrhea and atypical EPEC (aEPEC) was recently identified as significantly associated with diarrheal mortality in kittens. In both children and kittens there is a significant association between aEPEC burden and diarrheal disease, however the infection can be found in individuals with and without diarrhea. It remains unclear to what extent, under what conditions, or by what mechanisms aEPEC serves as a primary pathogen in individuals with diarrhea. It seems likely that a combination of host and bacterial factors enable aEPEC to cause disease in some individuals and not in others. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of aEPEC on intestinal function and diarrhea in kittens following experimentally-induced carriage and the influence of a disrupted intestinal microbiota on disease susceptibility. Results of this study identify aEPEC as a potential pathogen in kittens. In the absence of disruption to the intestinal microbiota, kittens are resistant to clinical signs of aEPEC carriage but demonstrate significant occult changes in intestinal absorption and permeability. Antibiotic-induced disruption of the intestinal microbiota prior to infection increases subsequent intestinal water loss as determined by % fecal wet weight. Enrichment of the intestinal microbiota with a commensal member of the feline mucosa-associated microbiota, Enterococcus hirae , ameliorated the effects of aEPEC experimental infection on intestinal function and water loss. Abstract: Background: Any quantity varying in the spatial-temporal dimension may be considered as a signal. Human lymphocyte cell surface molecules and subsets present circadian variation and this variation may represent a kind of signalling in the neuroendocrine-immune system. We have analyzed the dynamics of variation of specific lymphocyte subsets in healthy humans. Subjects and methods: In our study, lymphocyte subpopulation analyses were performed and cortisol, melatonin, GH and TSH serum levels were measured on blood samples collected every 4h for 24hours from eleven healthy men, ages 35–53 years (mean=44±6SD). Results: A clear circadian rhythm was validated for CD8 and cortisol with acrophase during the day and for CD3, CD4, melatonin, GH and TSH with acrophase at night. Cross-correlation showed that CD3 correlated positively with CD4 (ρ =0.67, P <0.05) and negatively with CD8 (ρ =−0.41, P <0.05), CD4 correlated positively with melatonin (ρ =0.90, P <0.05), GH (ρ =0.92, P <0.05) and TSH (ρ =0.71, P <0.05), negatively with CD8 (ρ =−0.90, P <0.05) and cortisol (ρ =−0.18, P <0.05), CD8 correlated positively with cortisol (ρ =0.38, P <0.05). Discussion: The different profiles of nyctohemeral changes of lymphocyte cell surface molecules and specific lymphocyte subsets realize different relationships with the neuroendocrine hormones and might represent a way of signal transmission among the multiple components of the neuroendocrine-immune system. Summary Aggressive cancers such as glioblastoma (GBM) contain intermingled apoptotic cells adjacent to proliferating tumor cells. Nonetheless, intercellular signaling between apoptotic and surviving cancer cells remain elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that apoptotic GBM cells paradoxically promote proliferation and therapy resistance of surviving tumor cells by secreting apoptotic extracellular vesicles (apoEVs) enriched with various components of spliceosomes. apoEVs alter RNA splicing in recipient cells, thereby promoting their therapy resistance and aggressive migratory phenotype. Mechanistically, we identified RBM11 as a representative splicing factor that is upregulated in tumors after therapy and shed in extracellular vesicles upon induction of apoptosis. Once internalized in recipient cells, exogenous RBM11 switches splicing of MDM4 and Cyclin D1 toward the expression of more oncogenic isoforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
