Radial diffusion in planetary radiation belts is a dominant transport mechanism resulting in the energization and losses of charged particles by large-scale electromagnetic fluctuations. In this work we exploit the extensive radial diffusion coefficients (D LL) database created in the framework of the Horizon 2020 SafeSpace project, which spans 9 years of hourly D LL coefficients, to investigate the spatio-temporal distributions of the coefficients. Our results indicate that the radial distribution of the magnetic and electric component of the D LL , as well as their sum, the total D LL , can be well described by a power law function of L* in the [4.3–7.7] range. We show that the L*-dependent spectral index varies significantly and is far from constant as assumed and implemented in many semi-empirical models. We examine the quasi-periodic behavior of the radial profiles of the D LL throughout most of the 24th Solar cycle, which the data cover, and find an approximately 420 days dominant periodicity. This periodic behavior is linked (in terms of cross-wavelet analysis) with solar activity, nevertheless, its origin remains unclear. Abstract Dayside interplanetary (IP) shock-induced injections are known to be a source of highly relativistic electrons in Earth's outer radiation belt, and are possibly the only source of >1 MeV electrons in the inner belt. The associated electron energization process is well understood and modeled. Recently, relativistic electron depletion echoes have also been associated with IP shocks, but the processes driving the depletions are less well understood. In this study, we investigate in detail two shock induced >1 MeV electron depletion events observed by the Van Allen Probes, March 17, 2015 and May 24, 2013, and draw similarities to night-side substorm related enhancements and depletions. Both events exhibit shock induced enhancements on one of the Van Allen Probes and depletions on the other in >1 MeV channels, such observations have not previously been reported. The depletion of >1 MeV electrons during the March 17, 2015 event is associated with enhancements in 10 s–100 s keV electrons on the same spacecraft. The depletion is consistent with the effects of a lack of seed electrons at larger radial distances combined with inward motion due to asymmetric compression by the shock impact. The immediate enhancements and depletions of 75 keV–2.6 MeV electrons are explained by the local phase space density radial profile. Observations of electron flux dynamics during the May 24, 2013 event can also be explained by a lack of a seed population at larger radial distances, supported by butterfly distributions observed during the event. The electron's inward radial motion can be attributed to the inward propagating impulse also associated with the >1 MeV electron enhancements observed on the complementary probe, rather than global asymmetric compression. This causal mechanism has parallels to substorm related depletions. Alternatively, evidence is provided to attribute the sudden depletions to losses due to a sudden but brief inward motion of the magnetopause. Highlights • The immediate response of Earth’s electron outer radiation belt is presented for two interplanetary shock events. • The prompt response of >1 MeV electrons were observed by both the Van Allen Probes spacecraft for both events. • For each event, one spacecraft observed a prompt enhancement, while the other observed a sudden depletion. • The sudden dropouts can be explained by inward motion and lack of a source population at larger radial distances. • One of the sudden dropout events can also be explained by brief magnetopause shadowing. The CSES satellite, developed by Chinese (CNSA) and Italian (ASI) space Agencies, will investigate iono-magnetospheric disturbances (induced by seismicity and electromagnetic emissions of tropospheric and anthropogenic origin); will monitor the temporal stability of the inner Van Allen radiation belts and will study the solar-terrestrial coupling by measuring fluxes of cosmic rays and solar energetic particles. In particular the mission aims at confirming the existences (claimed from several analyses) of a temporal correlations between the occurrence of earthquakes and the observation in space of electromagnetic disturbances, plasma fluctiations and anomalous fluxes of high-energy particles precipitating from the inner Van Allen belt. CSES will be launched in the summer of 2017 with a multi-instruments payload able to measure: e.m. fields, charged particles, plasma, TEC, etc. The Italian LIMADOU collaboration will provide the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD), designed for detecting electrons (3–200 MeV) and proton (30–300 MeV)), and participates to develop the Electric Field Detector (EFD) conceived for measuring electric field from ∼DC up to 5 MHz. The NASA Van Allen Probes mission (previously called the Radiation Belt Storm Probes) successfully launched on 30 August 2012. The twin spacecraft, designed, built, and operated by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), has been successfully operating within Earth׳s radiation belts since then, returning critical science data revealing new insights into the physics of the radiation belts. Because of the extreme radiation environment, all spacecraft subsystems including the communications system had to make special accommodations to withstand the effects of the radiation. Each Van Allen Probes spacecraft׳s telecommunications system includes an S-band version of the Frontier Radio, a solid-state power amplifier, RF routing components, and dual low-gain antennas. This mission marks the first flight of the Frontier Radio, which is baselined for use in the upcoming Solar Probe Plus and Europa Clipper missions. This paper will present an overview of the as-built telecommunications system and its ground station interfaces discuss key communications flight hardware components, and then discuss in detail its activities and performance in-flight, including the launch and commissioning operations, performance enhancements since launch, and performance trending in flight. Pre-launch preparations at the APL 18-m ground station revealed occasional RF interference that could disrupt Van Allen Probe downlink. A monitoring system was installed to help mitigate some interference sources, and to characterize the residual environment and show that RF interference was not a mission risk. Post-launch commissioning activities were driven by the requirement to verify both spacecraft׳s communication systems over multiple ground networks, including JHU/APL׳s own 18-m ground station, the Universal Space Network, and TDRSS. Enhanced science data downlink volume was enabled by expanding the usable field of view of the spacecrafts׳ antennas once in-flight calibrations of the antenna patterns were completed, as well as reducing downlink link margins to a bare minimum when downlinking via APL׳s 18-m dish, where the CFDP (CCSDS File Delivery Protocol) is used to guarantee file delivery. Radiation drove some of the hardware design; the radios have experienced several predicted fault conditions at the predicted rates and have reacted autonomously as designed to minimize impact to the science downlink. Space radiation environment at Low Earth Orbits (LEO) with perigee at 300 km, apogee at 600 km altitude having different orbital inclinations was modeled in the form of electrons and protons trapped in Van Allen Earth Radiation Belts (ERBs), heavy ions and protons in Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs), and Energetic Solar Particles (ESP) Events during solar maximum period. The co-relation between various shielding thicknesses and particles transport flux was analyzed for this specific orbit. We observed that there is an optimum shield thickness above which the attenuation of the transmitted flux of incident particles is negligible. To estimate the orbit average differential and integral fluxes to be encountered by onboard devices an appropriate radiation environment models were chosen in OMERE-TRAD toolkit and the impact of various shielding thickness for different orbital inclinations on integral Linear-Energy-Transfer (LET) spectra were determined. Abstract: The evolution of the particle background at an altitude of ~540 km during the time interval between 1996 and 2007 is studied using the particle monitor of the High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment on board NASA''s Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. A special emphasis of this study is the location and strength of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). The size and strength of the SAA are anti-correlated with the 10.7 cm radio flux of the Sun, which leads the SAA strength by ~1 year reflecting variations in solar heating of the upper atmosphere. The location of the SAA is also found to drift westwards with an average drift rate of about 0.3°/yr following the drift of the geomagnetic-field configuration. Superimposed to this drift rate are irregularities, where the SAA suddenly moves eastwards and where furthermore the speed of the drift changes. The most prominent of these irregularities is found in the second quarter of 2003 and another event took place in 1999. We suggest that these events are previously unrecognized manifestations of the geomagnetic jerks of the Earth''s magnetic field. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Ballooncraft Support Systems were developed by NASA Wallops Flight Facility for use on ULDB class balloon missions. The support systems have now flown two missions supporting the Cosmic Rays Energetics and Mass (CREAM) experiment. The first, CREAM I, flown in December 2004, was for a record breaking 41 days, 21h, and the second flight flown in December 2005, was for 28 days, 9h. These support systems provide CREAM with power, telecommunications, command, and data handling including flight computers, mechanical structures, thermal management, and attitude control to help ensure a successful scientific mission. Abstract: Discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts by instrumentation flown on Explorer 1 in 1958 was the first major discovery of the Space Age. A view of the belts as distinct inner and outer zones of energetic particles with different sources was modified by observations made during the Cycle 22 maximum in solar activity in 1989–1991, the first approaching the activity level of the International Geophysical Year of 1957–1958. The dynamic variability of outer zone electrons was measured by the NASA–Air Force Combined Radiation Release and Effects Satellite launched in July 1990. This variability is caused by distinct types of heliospheric structure which vary with the solar cycle. The largest fluxes averaged over a solar rotation occur during the declining phase from solar maximum, when high-speed streams and co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) dominate the inner heliosphere, leading to recurrent storms. Intense episodic events driven by high-speed interplanetary shocks launched by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) prevail around solar maximum when CMEs occur most frequently. Only about half of moderate storms, defined by intensity of the ring current, lead to an overall flux increase, emphasizing the need to quantify loss as well as source processes; both increase when the magnetosphere is strongly driven. Three distinct types of acceleration are described in this review: prompt and diffusive radial transport, which increases energy while conserving the first invariant, and local acceleration by waves, which change the first invariant. The latter also produce pitch angle diffusion and loss, as does outward radial transport, especially when the magnetosphere is compressed. The effect of a dynamic magnetosphere boundary on radiation belt electrons is described in the context of MHD-test particle simulations driven by measured solar wind input. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This brief review summarizes recent findings related to particle precipitation associated with electromagnetic ion–cyclotron (EMIC) waves seen on the ground as geomagnetic Pc1 and IPDP pulsations. Particle precipitation signatures of ion–cyclotron interaction are described as revealed from low-altitude satellite measurements of the energetic proton fluxes as well as from observations of the proton aurora. As a result, localized proton precipitation patterns situated equatorward of the isotropy boundary are disclosed. One of the patterns is a proton precipitation spot in the morning sector, presumably mapped onto plasmapause; another one is an elongated region of the precipitation, presumably mapped onto the plasmaspheric plume. Clear evidence of the pitch-angle scattering associated with the ion–cyclotron wave activity is found near the equatorial plane in the region conjugated with the localized proton precipitation at low altitude. Thus, the revealed precipitation patterns determine the location of the region of intense pitch-angle scattering of energetic protons, and, therefore, their observations can be used to monitor the region of the ion–cyclotron interaction and to study its origin and properties. Abstract: We present multi-instrument observations of ultra low frequency (ULF) wave activity from the dawn flank magnetosphere during the period 12:00–13:30UT on the 16 December 2003. Optical, magnetic and riometer measurements from the Churchill line meridian in the Canadian sector are presented which demonstrate the presence of multiple discrete auroral arc structures accompanied by periodic magnetic and riometer absorption perturbations in the Pc5 (150–600s) ULF band. Clear polewards propagation is demonstrated in all the instrument data sets, the magnetic signals showing most clearly the amplitude and phase characteristics consistent with discrete frequency field line resonances (FLRs) on closed field lines. Two discrete frequency field line resonant signals are apparent, at 1.8 and 3.0mHz which resonate at approximately the same latitude. We explain this via the calculation of the Alfvén continuum, and show that both frequencies may be resonant in the same latitudinal region within instrumental resolution. The meridian scanning photometer (MSP) observations from polewards of the magnetometer determined resonant latitudes show evidence of low intensity (∼200R) poleward moving discrete arcs related to the ULF waves. Interestingly the MSP observations demonstrate poleward phase propagation with variable rates across the field of view; faster apparent polewards phase propagation being seen at higher latitudes. We demonstrate that the complicated “braided” phase of the arcs can be explained via the precipitation resulting from the superposition of two discrete FLRs. Furthermore, we characterise the ≳25keV energetic electron precipitation in the region of the FLRs and the arc structures via periodic D-region absorption. In this way, we link the magnetic and both soft and energetic particle precipitation signatures of FLRs together for the first time. Our results demonstrate that riometer absorption can be used to characterise FLRs, however, this is only generally possible at lower L-shells where energetic electrons in the ring current overlap with the FLR fields in the equatorial plane. Abstract: The Earth''s natural van Allen radiation belts present a serious hazard to space travel in general, and to travel on the space elevator in particular. The average radiation level is sufficiently high that it can cause radiation sickness, and perhaps death, for humans spending more than a brief period of time in the belts without shielding. The exact dose and the level of the related hazard depends on the type or radiation, the intensity of the radiation, the length of exposure, and on any shielding introduced. For the space elevator the radiation concern is particularly critical since it passes through the most intense regions of the radiation belts. The only humans who have ever traveled through the radiation belts have been the Apollo astronauts. They received radiation doses up to approximately 1rem over a time interval less than an hour. A vehicle climbing the space elevator travels approximately 200 times slower than the moon rockets did, which would result in an extremely high dose up to approximately 200rem under similar conditions, in a timespan of a few days. Technological systems on the space elevator, which spend prolonged periods of time in the radiation belts, may also be affected by the high radiation levels. In this paper we will give an overview of the radiation belts in terms relevant to space elevator studies. We will then compute the expected radiation doses, and evaluate the required level of shielding. We concentrate on passive shielding using aluminum, but also look briefly at active shielding using magnetic fields. We also look at the effect of moving the space elevator anchor point and increasing the speed of the climber. Each of these mitigation mechanisms will result in a performance decrease, cost increase, and technical complications for the space elevator. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We use a trio of empirical models to estimate the relative contributions of solar extreme ultraviolet heating, Joule heating and particle heating to the global energy budget of the earth’s upper atmosphere. Daily power values are derived from the models for the three heat sources. The SOLAR2000 solar irradiance specification model provides estimates of the daily extreme EUV solar power input. Geomagnetic power comes from a combination of satellite-derived electron precipitation power and an empirical model of Joule power derived from hemispherically integrated estimates of high-latitude heating, which we discuss in this paper. From 1975 to mid-2002, the average daily contributions were electrons: 51GW, Joule: 95GW and solar: 784GW. Joule and particle heating combine to provide more than 17% of the total global upper atmospheric heating. For the top 10% and 1% of heating events, contributions rise to ∼20% and 25%, respectively. In the top 15 heating events, geomagnetic power contributed more than 50% of the total power budget. During three events, the Joule power alone exceeded solar power. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We have developed a statistical model of precipitating electrons based on 10 years worth of NOAA-12 Space Environment Monitor (SEM) data. For each hour of UT, the electron spectral shape is defined for solar activity (using F 10.7), geomagnetic activity (using Dst, Kp, and PC), invariant latitude (40 to 90°N and −40° to −90°S), and every hour of magnetic local time to form a climatology. The current version of our climatology includes a description of the precipitating differential number flux, unfolded from the integral high-energy telescopes of SEM and its lower-energy differential measurements. In total, the energy range covered by SEM is from 300eV to 1MeV. We use real-time Dst predictions from several sites on the Internet which forecast Dst up to 1h ahead of time to predict the corresponding precipitating electron flux. Our electron precipitation forecast contributes to space weather applications by predicting a spectral description of atmospheric electron energy input. These electron energy spectra can be used to generate atmospheric energy input, ionization rates and height-integrated Hall and Pedersen conductivities, which are important parameters to models such as AMIE and TIME-GCM.
