The UV enhancement of Al-coated ZnO single crystals with a wide range of carrier densities is systematically studied using depth-resolved cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence as well as valence band X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (VB-XPS). An up to 17-fold enhanced PL UV emission for Al-coated ZnO with the highest carrier density was measured, which falls to a 12-fold increase for the lowest carrier density. Depth-resolved cathodoluminescence measurements confirm that the enhancement is strongest near the Al-ZnO interface consistent with an increased UV emission due to an exciton-localized surface plasmon coupling mechanism. Correlative cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence and VB-XPS studies reveal that a number of additional effects related to the presence of the Al surface coating also contribute to the UV enhancement factor. These include increased UV enhancement due to the formation of a surface depletion layer induced by the Al coating, which also passivates competitive non-radiative surface recombination channels found in uncoated ZnO. Significantly, it was established that the magnitude of the emission enhancement factor can be raised in a controlled way by reducing the thickness of the depletion layer by increasing the carrier density. Photocatalytic self-cleansing ZnO membranes were developed and used for pre-concentrating microalgae solution prior to harvesting. The inorganic membranes were fabricated via two different methods: (i) direct deposition of ZnO onto a porous stainless steel substrate and (ii) post-growth oxidation of a deposited metallic Zn layer. Systematic surface characterisation revealed a thin layer of homogeneous, crystalline ZnO on the porous membrane. Direct ZnO deposition resulted in a thicker layer with higher UV light absorption capability compared with the post-growth oxidization method. The ZnO coating made the membrane surface highly hydrophilic, resulting in two-fold increase in water permeance compared to the base stainless steel substrate. The high hydrophilicity of the ZnO-coated membrane also led to an increase in the permeate flux of the microalgae solution by up to 100%, making it suitable for microalgae pre-concentration. Upon UV light irradiation, the ZnO membrane demonstrated self-cleansing capability due to the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO coating layer. After 30 min of UV irradiation, the ZnO membrane could achieve 60% permeance recovery after complete fouling. No recovery was observed with the base stainless steel membrane, which was used as the control. Specific organic pollutants (SOPs) such as phenolic compounds, PAHs, organic pesticides, and organic herbicides cause health and environmental problems due to their excessive toxic properties and poor biodegradability. Low-cost biosorbents are considered as a promising alternative for conventional adsorbents to remove SOPs from water. These materials have several advantages such as high sorption capacities, good modifiability and recoverability, insensitivity to toxic substances, simple operation in the treatment processes. However, previous reports on various types of biosorbents for removing SOPs are still moderately fragmented. Hence, this paper provides a comprehensive review on using typical low-cost biosorbents obtained from lignocellulose and chitin/chitosan for SOPs adsorption. Especially, their characteristics, biosorption mechanism together with utilization for eliminating SOPs are presented and discussed.
