Abstract

Background: Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time. Methods: For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific, vaccine-specific, and dose-specific observations of routine childhood vaccination coverage between 1980 and 2019. Using spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression, we produced location-specific and year-specific estimates of 11 routine childhood vaccine coverage indicators for 204 countries and territories from 1980 to 2019, adjusting for biases in country-reported data and reflecting reported stockouts and supply disruptions. We analysed global and regional trends in coverage and numbers of zero-dose children (defined as those who never received a diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis [DTP] vaccine dose), progress towards GVAP targets, and the relationship between vaccine coverage and sociodemographic development. Findings: By 2019, global coverage of third-dose DTP (DTP3; 81·6% [95% uncertainty interval 80·4–82·7]) more than doubled from levels estimated in 1980 (39·9% [37·5–42·1]), as did global coverage of the first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1; from 38·5% [35·4–41·3] in 1980 to 83·6% [82·3–84·8] in 2019). Third-dose polio vaccine (Pol3) coverage also increased, from 42·6% (41·4–44·1) in 1980 to 79·8% (78·4–81·1) in 2019, and global coverage of newer vaccines increased rapidly between 2000 and 2019. 29. Enhancing double-slope solar still performance through integrated channel shape variations: An experimental and numerical simulation investigation.

Abstract

The solar still system effectively addresses water scarcity concerns by adopting suitable methods for enhancing yields. Incorporating a preheating system, such as channels within solar still leads to an increased yield from the conversion of saline water. This research integrates various channel shapes (square, rectangular, triangular, and trapezoidal) into double-slope solar stills (DSSS) and their internal properties using numerical simulation and experimental processes under similar climatic conditions. A three-dimensional, multi-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of solar still was developed using Ansys Fluent 18.1 to compare simulation results with experimental data under the atmospheric conditions of Chengalpattu. The simulation predicted a maximum water yield of 0.44 kg/m2/h, while experimental data showed a peak yield of 0.41 kg/m2/h between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. There is a 6.82 % variation between the simulations and the experiments. According to the experimental results, the modified system shows a maximum variation of 8.13 % in influence parameter; the yield rate differences for the square, rectangular, triangular, and trapezoidal channels are 8.13, 7.24, 6.73, and 6.52 %, respectively. Trapezoidal channels are superior to other shapes due to their large evaporation capacity, higher wall temperatures due to increased solar absorption area, and superior base resistance. The simulation further explains the heat and mass transfer mechanics into the channel due to resistance from the feed water surface. The research suggests that varying channel shapes inside solar still enhance evaporation and yield rates compared to DSSS systems. Channel assembly-disassembly reaction is regulated by the products of the SecD SecF locus of SecA protein by the modulation of the SecA insertion-deinsertion step. This type of protein translocation activity is exhibited by Escherichia coli cells which have PCG169. PCG169 has SecA protein with the SecD SecF locus. Hence the association of SecA with other membranes is regulated by the SecD SecF locus.

Abstract

Background: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is an increasingly recognized entity with certain identified predisposing factors in children. However, the actual incidence, comorbidities, outcomes, and hospitalization charges among children (aged less than 20 years) in the United States are largely unknown.Methods: We analyzed the Kids' Inpatient Database for incidence of PRES-related hospitalizations, associated diagnoses, in-hospital outcomes, and charges for children in the United States in 2016. We report demographics, risk factors, discharge status, mortality, length of stay, and hospitalization charges.Results: In 2016, 825 pediatric hospitalizations related to PRES were captured in the Kids' Inpatient Database. Hospital discharges including solid organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, hypertension, renal disorder, primary immunodeficiency, malignancy, sepsis, severe sepsis, systemic connective tissue disorder, blood transfusion, hypomagnesemia, and sickle cell anemia were queried for presence of PRES. The majority of patients were discharged home. We found that PRES-related hospitalizations were significantly associated with increased length of stay and hospitalization charges in 2016 (P < 0.001). A mortality rate of 3.2% was found in PRES-related hospitalizations when compared with 0.4% in non-PRES hospitalizations (P < 0.001).Conclusion: PRES accounted for 0.04% of the hospitalizations in this database. Hypertension and the presence of a renal disorder are the most significant risk factors found to be associated with PRES. The presence of PRES was associated with a significant increase in hospitalization charges and increased length of stay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

CeO 2 - CePO 4 and Ag@CeO 2 - CePO 4 nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared using Penaeus semisulcatus and characterized by various analytical techniques. The NCs exhibited spherical morphology, with average particle sizes measuring 2.36 nm, 3.30 nm and 29.64 nm for the samples air dried, annealed at 550 °C and 800 °C respectively, and the Selected Area Electron Diffraction patterns from HR-TEM revealed their crystalline nature. In 3d X-ray Photoelectron Spectra (XPS) of NCs, the highest binding energies were observed at 916.46 eV (3d 3/2) and 898.16 eV (3d 5/2) with spin–orbit splitting of 18.3 eV. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns of the NCs showed peaks typical of both CeO 2 and CePO 4 phases. The Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR) spectrum contained bands due to Ce-O stretching at 560 cm−1 and PO 4 3- groups at 1008 and 711 cm−1, which was further substantiated by Raman spectrum, which had an intense peak at 468 cm−1 corresponding to F 2g band of CeO 2 and another peak at 976 cm−1 due to PO 4 3- tetrahedron. In the Ultraviolet-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectra (UV-Vis DRS), the broad absorption peak at 352 nm and minor peaks around 300 nm confirmed the formation of CeO 2 - CePO 4 NCs. The green synthesized NCs were excellent fluorescence sensors for Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ in a wide range of concentrations, from 5.0x10-9 M to 4.0x10-5 M. The concentration Vs. emission fitting plot had three distinctive linear ranges. At a low concentration range (5x10-9 to 3.5x10-7 M), the limit of detection for Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ was found to be 2.41x10-8, 2.56x10-8 and 3.11x10-8 M. The sensitive detection of a mixture of heavy metal ions in ppb levels by biocompatible NCs gained insight in treating aqueous industrial wastes. Abstract

P olycyclic A romatic H ydrocarbons ( PAHs ) are among the most ubiquitous environmental pollutants of high global concern. PAHs belong to a diverse family of hydrocarbons with over one hundred compounds known, each containing at least two aromatic rings in their structure. Due to hydrophobic nature, PAHs tend to accumulate in the aquatic sediments, leading to bioaccumulation and elevated concentrations over time. In addition to their well-manifested mutagenic and carcinogenic effects in humans, they pose severe detrimental effects to aquatic life. The high eco-toxicity of PAHs has attracted a number of reviews, each dealing specifically with individual aspects of this global pollutant. However, efficient management of PAHs warrants a holistic approach that combines a thorough understanding of their physico-chemical properties, modes of environmental distribution and bioaccumulation, efficient detection, and bioremediation strategies. Currently, there is a lack of a comprehensive study that amalgamates all these aspects together. The current review, for the first time, overcomes this constraint, through providing a high level comprehensive understanding of the complexities faced during PAH management, while also recommending future directions through potentially viable solutions. Importantly, effective management of PAHs strongly relies upon reliable detection tools, which are currently non-existent, or at the very best inefficient, and therefore have a strong prospect of future development. Notably, the currently available biosensor technologies for PAH monitoring have not so far been compiled together, and therefore a significant focus of this article is on biosensor technologies that are critical for timely detection and efficient management of PAHs. This review is focussed on inland aquatic ecosystems with an emphasis on fish biodiversity, as fish remains a major source of food and livelihood for a large proportion of the global population. Abstract

The present work focuses on the influencing factors for the performance enrichment of solar still, which serves as one of the sources of cleaner production of freshwater in a hot environment. This enrichment in yield has been achieved through channel attachments and optimized water depth. The different positions of interior and exterior temperatures are measured and compared with/without the channel attachment of the solar still. The results reveal that the water yield from the double slope is found more with channel attachments in the solar still at the minimum water depth of 1 cm. The different month yield rates are compared with and without channel attachment. Furthermore, the theoretical exergy analysis has been conducted for various components of double slope solar still and compared with experimental findings. The yield rates for 1 cm basin water depths in March, April, and May are as follows: for the modified system - theoretical rates of 2.490, 2.760, and 2.900 L m−2 and experimental rates of 2.285, 2.530, and 2.770 L m−2; for the base system - theoretical rates of 2.090, 2.200, and 2.475 L m−2 and experimental rates of 1.920, 2.110, and 2.270 L m−2. In comparison to the basic system, the modified DSSS yield rate increased from 6.66% to 22.02%, and the exergy efficiency of the DSSS with and without a channel attachment are 8.42% and 4.14%, respectively. The present method can be adopted to solve the drinking water shortage problem at hot environments. Abstract

The prevalence and adverse impacts of microplastics requires the identification of science-based abatement measures. Electrocoagulation treatment is a cost-effective oxidation process that removes numerous pollutants, including to some extent, microplastics. The performance of a custom-built electrocoagulation reactor was determined by calculating the removal efficiency. The effects of the oxidation process on polymer types (polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP)) and shapes (fibres and fragments) were investigated in synthetic wastewater and laundry wastewater. The calculated removal efficiency suggested that electrocoagulation treatment was an effective technology for microplastics abatement. More fibres tended to be removed than fragments, viz. 92% fibres removed versus 88% fragments. The findings also demonstrated that specific polymers were preferentially removed, viz. PET > LDPE > PP > PA. Further analysis indicated that the electrocoagulation treatment affected microplastic polymers physically, viz. flaking and changed surface conditions, as well as chemically, viz. changes in vibrational energies of C–O–C stretching bonds, C=O stretching bonds, C–H stretching bonds and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our findings indicate that whilst seemingly effective, electrocoagulation treatment induces changes to microplastic polymers that could beneficially lead to degradation, and/or further fragmentation or breakdown and thereby potentially generating more bioavailable toxic nanoplastic byproducts. Abstract

Derelict mines pose potential risks to environmental health. Several factors such as soil structure, organic matter, and nutrient content are the greatly affected qualities in mined soils. Soil microbial communities are an important element for successful reclamation because of their major role in nutrient cycling, plant establishment, geochemical transformations, and soil formation. Yet, microorganisms generally remain an undervalued asset in mined sites. The microbial diversity in derelict mine sites consists of diverse species belonging to four key phyla: Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes. The activity of plant symbiotic microorganisms including root-colonizing rhizobacteria and ectomycorrhizal fungi of existing vegetation in the mined sites is very high since most of these microbes are extremophiles. This review outlines the importance of microorganisms to soil health and the rehabilitation of derelict mines and how microbial activity and diversity can be exploited to better plan the soil rehabilitation. Besides highlighting the major breakthroughs in the application of microorganisms for mined site reclamation, we provide a critical view on plant−microbiome interactions to improve revegetation at the mined sites. Also, the need has been emphasized for deciphering the molecular mechanisms of adaptation and resistance of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere microbes in abandoned mine sites, understanding their role in remediation, and subsequent harnessing of their potential to pave the way in future rehabilitation strategies for mined sites. Abstract

For more than a decade, the primary focus of environmental experts has been to adopt risk-based management approaches to cleanup PAH polluted sites that pose potentially destructive ecological consequences. This focus had led to the development of several physical, chemical, thermal and biological technologies that are widely implementable. Established remedial options available for treating PAH contaminated soils are incineration, thermal conduction, solvent extraction/soil washing, chemical oxidation, bioaugmentation, biostimulation, phytoremediation, composting/biopiles and bioreactors. Integrating physico-chemical and biological technologies is also widely practiced for better cleanup of PAH contaminated soils. Electrokinetic remediation, vermiremediation and biocatalyst assisted remediation are still at the development stage. Though several treatment methods to remediate PAH polluted soils currently exist, a comprehensive overview of all the available remediation technologies to date is necessary so that the right technology for field-level success is chosen. The objective of this review is to provide a critical overview in this respect, focusing only on the treatment options available for field soils and ignoring the spiked ones. The authors also propose the development of novel multifunctional green and sustainable systems like mixed cell culture system, biosurfactant flushing, transgenic approaches and nanoremediation in order to overcome the existing soil- contaminant- and microbial-associated technological limitations in tackling high molecular weight PAHs.
