I review Talbot Taylor's rigorous critique of stylistic theory (begun as early as his first book in 1981 and resumed periodically, at least implicitly, in the decades since), and speculate as to why it appeared to have little impact on the practice of literary stylistics. Are stylisticians simply too engrossed in the practical and pedagogical commitments of stylistics to be embarrassed by the deep theoretical contradictions Taylor identified? Or perhaps the appearance of disregard is deceptive; perhaps some contemporary stylisticians have accepted the Taylorian theoretical critique, and tacitly recognise that literary stylistics is in essence a highly specialized form of the normative metadiscourse, applied to literary texts, that Taylor has argued lies at the heart of lay linguistics. Abstract In this work we introduce a new method to compute the matrix cosine. It is based on recent new matrix polynomial evaluation methods for the Taylor approximation and a mixed forward and backward error analysis. The matrix polynomial evaluation methods allow to evaluate the Taylor polynomial approximation of the matrix cosine function more efficiently than using Paterson–Stockmeyer method. A sequential Matlab implementation of the new algorithm is provided, giving better efficiency and accuracy than state-of-the-art algorithms. Abstract Great Britain (outside London) is unusual in Western Europe in leaving the planning of its bus networks to the private sector, albeit from an established historic basis. It took several years following deregulation in 1986, compounded by wholesale changes in the ownership of bus operators, for new, stable, mature relationships to develop between operators and local transport authorities. The building of partnership working, founded on common interests of encouraging greater accessibility by bus, increasing patronage, and modal shift from cars – with their consequent social, economic and environmental benefits – has underpinned some impressive achievements over the last 25 years. We examine the role of partnerships in enabling and sustaining improvements in service quality and supply, and securing additional investment in network resources and facilities. This reflects lengthy direct experience of developing the partnership concept with authorities and operators and working through the variety of challenges. Added to this experience, we draw on 2015 data obtained from across Britain while revising the relevant government guidance. We consider the benefits of and obstacles to partnership, the mechanisms and components of successful partnerships, and the lessons from less successful implementations. An analysis on selecting cutting speed, cutting feed and depth of cut when collecting data for the Colding Tool Life Model based on Woxen’s Equivalent Chip Thickness was performed to achieve the lowest possible model error. All possible combinations of a large data set were evaluated with regard to model error. This work shows that an increase of ratio between the highest and lowest cutting speed, feed, depth of cut and tool life within the five included tool life tests increases the likelihood of an accurate model. Further, to ensure an accurate model, it is not enough to have a large ratio of one single parameter, but a large ratio in all parameters is needed. The paper also presents a suggestion on how to select the cutting data points, derived from the best performing tool life models. It is concluded that one should aim to have one pair of cutting data points with equal equivalent chip thickness while varying cutting speed and three more test points with different equivalent chip thickness. The MORET code is a simulation tool that solves the transport equation for neutrons using the Monte Carlo method. A perturbation procedure using first order Taylor expansion series in the continuous-energy calculation for isotopic concentrations and density perturbations have been recently implemented. It relies on the calculation of an adjoint weighted sensitivity coefficient with respect to isotopic concentration. Thus, the MORET code now offers the users the possibility to use either the correlated sampling or taylor series as the perturbation method. The present paper provides a description of continuous-energy perturbation methods available in the MORET code focusing on the Taylor expansion series, which have been implemented in the last release of the code. Then, some considerations about the algorithm and implementation are presented. This paper exploits the stress recovery technique to evaluate the out-of-plane stress components in the static analysis of composite beams, plates and shells. This technique is implemented in the framework of the Carrera Unified Formulation, an approach allowing the implementation of the theories of structures in a compact way. This work uses Taylor, Legendre and Jacobi polynomials with equivalent single-layer and layer-wise approaches. The finite element method is applied to provide numerical solutions. Multi-layered beams, plates and shells subjected to different loading and boundary conditions are studied to validate and assess the proposed technique. The results are compared with those from the literature and show that the stress recovery technique provides reasonable accuracy for the shear stresses, even with lower-order models. Furthermore, results confirm that, when dealing with thick structures, the adoption of layer-wise models is mandatory to obtain accurate results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we give a new formula to write the forward error of Taylor approximations of analytical functions in terms of the backward error of those approximations, considering exact arithmetic in both errors. Using this formula, a method to compute a backward error given by the power series centered in the same expansion point as the Taylor approximation is provided. The application of this method for Padé approximations is also shown. Based on the previous method, a MATLAB implementation for computing the first power series terms of the backward error for Taylor and Padé approximations of a given analytical function is provided, and examples of its use are given. Applications to the computation of matrix functions are given that overcome limitations of other backward error analyses use inverse compositional functions in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of this work was to investigate the diagnostic value of the DIR sequence at 3T MR imaging operating in the evaluation of cortical development anomalies. Methods: We studied 40 patients, with a previous diagnosis of cortical dysplasia, by FLAIR-3D, DIR, FSE T2 and MPR-GE T1 sequences at 3T MRI. Two independent observers evaluated, for each sequence and lesion, some semiological aspects (cortical thickness, cortical signal intensity, white-gray matter blurring, subcortical white matter intensity). We made also a quantitative evaluation of the cortical signal intensity in lesion site, drawing a ROI on each MRI sequences and comparing them to the correspondent normal contralateral cortical area. Results: We identified 44 cortical development anomalies. Qualitative analyses showed a high level of agreement between the observers concerning DIR potentialities in detecting and characterizing the cortical development disorders. Particularly DIR sequence was able to demonstrate the blurring and the subcortical white matter anomalies. The quantitative analyses didn't show a significant difference between DIR and traditional sequences in the evaluation of the cortical signal intensity. Conclusion: 3T MRI-DIR sequence is a useful and better suitable sequence compared to the traditional sequences in the characterization of some semiological aspects of the cortical development disorders, particularly blurring and subcortical white matter hyperintensity. Abstract: The Taylor Valley (DVDP-10, -11) and Ferrar Fiord (CIROS-2) drill cores offer a window into the evolution of southern Victoria Land glaciers and the Antarctic climate system during the late-Neogene. Here we present new magnetostratigraphic chronologies, which we use to correlate the drill core successions with onshore dry-valleys geomorphic records and offshore deep-ocean records. Magnetostratigraphies were constructed using stepwise AF and/or thermal demagnetisation of discrete specimens from the drill cores. Correlation of magnetostratigraphies with the magnetic polarity timescale was guided by biostratigraphic and radiometric constraints. We recognise five styles of sedimentation in the Taylor/Ferrar fiords, which we correlate with discrete climate phases. During the latest Miocene–early Pliocene, wet based glaciers filled the Taylor and Ferrar fiords with active sedimentation in the Taylor Fiord and erosion of basement rocks in the Ferrar Fiord. Glaciers retreated during the Pliocene warm period leaving open marine conditions and deep fiords (>300m) at a time when the Ross Sea was free of ice and sea surface temperatures around Antarctica were at least 5°C warmer than today. We recognise the first significant cooling in DVDP-11 post 2.6Ma by a shift to current winnowed sediments sourced from the Ross Sea rather than from East Antarctic glaciers. Post 1.7Ma, lacustrine sediments were deposited behind ice-dammed lakes, which formed when West Antarctic ice expanded and grounded across the Ross Embayment and abutted the Transantarctic Mountains. Abstract: Convection in the Earth''s mantle appears to be strongly time-dependent on geological time scales. However, we lack direct observations which would help constrain the temporal variation of convection on time scales of 1–10 Ma. Recently, it has been demonstrated that transient uplift events punctuated the otherwise uniform thermal subsidence of sedimentary basins which fringe the Icelandic plume. In the Faroe–Shetland basin, three-dimensional seismic reflection surveys calibrated by well logs have been used to reconstruct a ∼55 million year old transient event. The minimum amount of uplift is 490 m, which grew and decayed within 2 Ma. This event has also been mapped 400 km further east in the North Sea basin, where peak uplift with an amplitude of 300 m occurred 0.3–1.6 Ma later. Neither observation can be explained by glacio-eustatic sea-level changes or by crustal shortening. We describe a simple fluid dynamical model which accounts for these transient and diachronous observations. In this model, we assume that the Icelandic plume was already in existence and that it had an axisymmetric geometry in which hot (e.g. 1400 °C) asthenospheric material flows away from a central conduit within a horizontal layer. A transient temperature anomaly introduced at the plume centre flows outward as an expanding annulus. Its geometry is calculated using radial flow between two parallel plates with a Poiseuille cross-stream velocity profile. The expanding annulus of hot asthenosphere generates transient isostatic uplift at the Earth''s surface. Stratigraphic observations from both basins can be accounted for using a plume flux of 1.3×108 km3 Ma−1 for a layer thickness of 100 km. Plume flux is broadly consistent with that required to account for Neogene (0–20 Ma) V-shaped ridges south of Iceland, although our transient temperature anomalies are larger. We suspect that the stratigraphic expression of transient convective behaviour is common and that a careful examination of appropriate records could yield important insights. Abstract: Many researchers believe that alloyed cemented carbide (W–Ti/Ta)C–Co is not suitable for machining of titanium alloys. However, the result of study reported in this paper shows that the alloyed carbide tools, i.e. alloyed uncoated carbide (W–Ti/Ta/Nb)C–Co and alloyed CVD-coated carbide (W–Ti/Ta/Nb)C–Co+(TiC+Ti/CN+/TiN), have good possibility to use in end milling of titanium alloy Ti-6242S even under extreme dry (green) cutting condition. It is probably due to the grain size of tools’ substrate and geometry (off-center ball end mill) and the class of titanium alloy Ti-6242S (α–β). From series of machining trials on the range of cutting speed, V c between 100 and 125m/min, f z 0.15–0.20mm/tooth, a a 2–2.5mm and a r 8.8mm using factorial 23 with four center points and three replications, it can be concluded that the best performance of the tools is at V c of 100–110m/min, f z 0.15–0.185mm/tooth and a a 2–2.25mm where tool life is ranging from T of 5–15min. Moreover, when those collected data through the trials are analysed using multiple linear regression method, the performance of both alloyed carbide tools can be represented by modified Taylor equations () and (), respectively. This essay offers a critical overview of Talbot Taylor's critique of the linguistic and philosophical positions taken by modern language theory on the nature of language, linguistics, and the capacity of non-human species to master language. It traces Taylor's argument regarding the compulsive assumption of all language theory, whether derived from empiricists like Locke or rationalists like Descartes, that it is its business to offer a theoretical explanation of how communication must take place between human beings in Mutual Misunderstanding and Theorizing Language, noting Taylor's indebtedness to Wittgenstein and especially his insistence that language is fundamentally normative. It explicates some of the implications of this normative theory for the notion of the fundamentally political character of language by relating it to the role that Saussure has played in the recent turn towards linguistic theory in literary studies, before finally discussing Taylor's stance on the debate about the species-specific nature of language in relation to Frans Kafka and J.M. Abstract: The therapeutic objective of a congenital radial clubhand is to obtain, at the end of the growth, a functional hand, that is a hand with a thumb, in the axis of the forearm with the most cosmetic aspect as possible. The challenge lies in the fact that the hand is not in the axis of the forearm. Thus, some authors realize a surgical centralization or radialization by doing a direct release of the retracted soft tissues. On the other hand, it is possible to correct the hand without any invasive surgery by using an external fixator allowing to correct the hand progressively.
