The European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II is a predictive model for in-hospital mortality after cardiac surgery. Although it has good performance among the general population undergoing cardiac surgery, it has not been validated among dialysis patients, who have a higher rate of mortality after cardiac surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the model in predicting in-hospital mortality in maintenance dialysis patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This retrospective, single-center study included adult patients on maintenance dialysis who underwent open cardiac surgery at our institution. Calibration performance of EuroSCORE II for in-hospital death was determined based on the comparison between expected and observed mortalities for low- (EuroSCORE II <4 %), intermediate- (4–8 %), and high-risk (>8 %) groups. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was investigated to determine the model's discrimination performance. A total of 163 patients (male, 73.6 %; median age, 70 years; median dialysis vintage, 9 years; median EuroSCORE II, 3.3 %) were included. The mortality rate was 9.2 %. The observed mortality rates (vs. mean expected mortality) rates were 2.1 % (vs. 2.4 %), 7.5 % (vs. 5.5 %), and 34.5 % (vs. 21.1 %) in the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups, respectively. Its AUROC was 0.825 (95 % confidence interval, 0.711–0.940). Although EuroSCORE II model adequately estimated in-hospital mortality in the low-and intermediate-risk groups (EuroSCORE II <8 %), it underestimated in-hospital mortality in the high-risk group (EuroSCORE II >8 %) among maintenance dialysis patients. We present a new oral intake route in a hypopharyngeal cancer patient with severe complications. A 64-year-old man was diagnosed as having T2N0M0 squamous cell carcinoma of the posterior wall of the hypopharynx. He had previously undergone radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer and tricuspid valve replacement surgery, and also had atrial flutter and renal dysfunction. We performed surgery with curative intent. The hypopharynx was primarily closed after tumor resection. Laryngotracheal separation and tracheoesophageal diversion with end-to-end anastomosis of the trachea to the esophagus was performed. After surgery, complete oral feeding was achieved using the new pathway created. The larynx, contradictory to its typical role, can be used as a pathway to the esophagus using our revolutionary technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 33-year-old pregnant woman with a history of a giant coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) of the right coronary artery owing to Kawasaki disease (KD) was referred to our hospital for the management of pregnancy and delivery. The CAA was detected when she was 10 months old on the 24th day from the onset of KD and showed transient regression followed by progressive dilation and reached a size of 25 mm when she was 30 years old. The baby was delivered at 38 weeks of gestational age. Resection of the CAA and coronary artery bypass grafting were performed 5 months after the delivery. Pathological results suggest that progressive dilation of the CAA was owing to a reduction in elastic recoiling force caused by partial destruction of the internal elastic lamina and degenerated tunica media against an increase in blood pressure that accompanied the growth of the patient. The pathophysiology of CAAs with atypical clinical course may be different from that of typical CAAs owing to KD. < Learning objective: Kawasaki disease (KD) causes varying sizes of coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs). In this case, rare progressive dilation of the CAA owing to KD was observed in the remote phase. • Host cell death is an immune defense against bacterial infection. • Shigella circumvents epithelial cell death to maintain its replicative niche. • Shigella utilizes specific T3SS effectors to modulate host cell death systems. In response to bacterial infection, epithelial cells undergo several types of cell death, including apoptosis, necrosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis, which serve to expel the infected cells and activate the innate and acquired immune responses. Shigella initially invades macrophages and subsequently surrounding enterocytes; the pathogen executes macrophage cell death but prevents epithelial cell death in order to maintain its foothold for replication. To this end, Shigella delivers versatile effector proteins via the type III secretion system (T3SS), allowing it to efficiently colonize the intestinal epithelium. In this article, we review insights into the mechanisms underlying circumvention of the host cell death by Shigella , as an example of bacterial fine-tuning of host cell death pathways. Objectives: The risk of aspiration pneumonia has been reported to increase with age, especially in elderly residents of nursing homes. However, the characteristics of those with swallowing impairments at elderly care facilities have not yet been evaluated using reliable instrumental examinations. The aims of the current study were to investigate the frequency of swallowing impairment and determine the characteristics of the elderly with swallowing disorders residing at care facilities.Methods: To reveal the characteristics of the elderly with swallowing disorders, questionnaires for dysphagia screening and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) were used. Regarding the dysphagia screening, two types of questionnaires were sent to 451 elderly persons aged 65 years and older who were living in facilities for the elderly in Japan. FEES was performed to assess swallowing impairment at each facility for those who were found to be positive for dysphagia by the questionnaires. The frequency of swallowing impairment and the characteristics of elderly subjects with swallowing disorders were investigated.Results: Among 413 subjects who completed both questionnaires, 229 were screened positive for dysphagia, 160 of whom underwent FEES. Swallowing impairment was observed in 93 subjects. The subjects with swallowing impairment had a significantly high prevalence of fever, sputum, and/or history of aspiration pneumonia. Their oral intake ability and activities of daily living were significantly low.Conclusion: We demonstrated the frequency of swallowing disorders and the characteristics of elderly subjects with swallowing disorders living in care facilities using FEES. Perinatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is defined as lung injury in preterm infants caused by various factors, resulting in serious respiratory dysfunction and high mortality. The administration of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) to treat/prevent BPD has proven to have certain therapeutic effects. However, MSCs can only weakly regulate macrophage function, which is strongly involved in the development of BPD. 7ND-MSCs are MSCs transfected with 7ND, a truncated version of CC chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) that promotes macrophage activation, using a lentiviral vector. In the present study, we show in a BPD rat model that 7ND-MSC administration, but not MSCs alone, ameliorated the impaired alveolarization evaluated by volume density and surface area in the lung tissue, as well as pulmonary artery remodeling and pulmonary hypertension induced by BPD. In addition, 7ND-MSCs, but not MSCs alone, reduced M1 macrophages and the messenger RNA expressions of interleukin-6 and CCL2 in the lung tissue. The intricate interplay between gut microbes and the onset of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) remains poorly understood. Here, we uncover remarkable similarities between CD4+ T cells in the spinal cord and their counterparts in the small intestine. Furthermore, we unveil a synergistic relationship between the microbiota, particularly enriched with the tryptophan metabolism gene EC:1.13.11.11, and intestinal cells. This symbiotic collaboration results in the biosynthesis of kynurenic acid (KYNA), which modulates the recruitment and aggregation of GPR35-positive macrophages. Subsequently, a robust T helper 17 (Th17) immune response is activated, ultimately triggering the onset of EAE. Conversely, modulating the KYNA-mediated GPR35 signaling in Cx3cr1+ macrophages leads to a remarkable amelioration of EAE. These findings shed light on the crucial role of microbial-derived tryptophan metabolites in regulating immune responses within extraintestinal tissues. Summary Inflammasome-mediated caspase-1 activation is involved in cell death and the secretion of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Although the dynamics of caspase-1 activation, IL-1β secretion, and cell death have been examined with bulk assays in population-level studies, they remain poorly understood at the single-cell level. In this study, we conducted single-cell imaging using a genetic fluorescence resonance energy transfer sensor that detects caspase-1 activation. We determined that caspase-1 exhibits all-or-none (digital) activation at the single-cell level, with similar activation kinetics irrespective of the type of inflammasome or the intensity of the stimulus. Real-time concurrent detection of caspase-1 activation and IL-1β release demonstrated that dead macrophages containing activated caspase-1 release a local burst of IL-1β in a digital manner, which identified these macrophages as the main source of IL-1β within cell populations. Abstract: Galanin (GAL) consists of a chain of 29/30 amino acids which is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems. In this study, the distribution of GAL-immunoreactive (-IR) nerve fibers was examined in the rat pharynx and its adjacent regions. GAL-IR nerve fibers were located beneath the epithelium and taste bud-like structure of the pharynx, epiglottis, soft palate and larynx. These nerve fibers were abundant in the laryngeal part of the pharynx, and were rare in other regions. Mucous glands were mostly devoid of GAL-IR nerve fibers. In the musculature of pharyngeal constrictor muscles, many GAL-IR nerve fibers were also located around small blood vessels. However, intrinsic laryngeal muscles contained only a few GAL-IR nerve fibers. The double immunofluorescence method demonstrated that the distribution pattern of GAL-IR nerve fibers was partly similar to that of calcitonin gene-related peptide-IR nerve fibers in the pharyngeal mucosa and muscles. The present findings suggest that the pharynx is one of main targets of GAL-containing nerves in the upper digestive and respiratory systems. These nerves may have sensory and autonomic origins. Summary: Peptide 19 (PEP 19) is a 7.6kDa polypeptide which can bind to calmodulin and inhibit calcium–calmodulin signaling. In this study, PEP 19-immunoreactivity (ir) was examined in the rat trigeminal sensory nuclei. Numerous PEP 19-immunoreactive (ir) neurons were detected in the medullary dorsal horn (MDH) and rostral parts of the trigeminal sensory nuclei (subnuclei interpolaris and oralis, and nucleus principalis). The mean numbers±S.D. per section of PEP 19-ir neurons were 104.2±30.4 in the MDH, 137.8±39.5 in the subnucleus interpolaris, 129.2±46.9 in the subnucleus oralis and 157.2±34.1 in the nucleus principalis. In the MDH, small to medium-sized PEP 19-ir neurons were abundant within superficial laminae. PEP 19-ir neurons with various cell body sizes were also distributed in the rostral parts of the trigeminal sensory nuclei. A double immunofluorescence analysis also demonstrated that many PEP 19-ir neurons co-expressed parvalbumin (PV)-ir in the MDH (9.0%), subnucleus oralis (7.7%) and nucleus principalis (19.7%). In the subnucleus interpolaris, such neurons were relatively rare (1.7%). PEP 19-ir neurons were mostly devoid of calbindin D-28k. In addition, a retrograde tracing method revealed that a substantial number of PEP 19-ir neurons projected to the thalamus. PV-ir was common in thalamus-projecting PEP 19-ir neurons. These findings suggest that PEP 19-ir neurons in the MDH may have a function in modulation of nociceptive and thermo-receptive signaling. It is also likely that PEP 19-ir neurons in rostral parts of the trigeminal sensory nuclei are related to transduction of mechano-receptive information from facial regions to the thalamus. Summary: The distribution of pituitary adenylatecyclase-activating polypeptide-immunoreactive (PACAP-IR) nerve fibers was studied in the rat epiglottis and pharynx. PACAP-IR nerve fibers were located beneath the mucous epithelium, and occasionally penetrated the epithelium. These nerve fibers were abundant on the laryngeal side of the epiglottis and in the dorsal and lateral border region between naso-oral and laryngeal parts of the pharynx. PACAP-IR nerve fibers were also detected in taste buds within the epiglottis and pharynx. In addition, many PACAP-IR nerve fibers were found around acinar cells and blood vessels. The double immunofluorescence method demonstrated that distribution of PACAP-IR nerve fibers was similar to that in CGRP-IR nerve fibers in the epithelium and taste bud. However, distributions of PACAP-IR and CGRP-IR nerve fibers innervating mucous glands and blood vessels were different. The retrograde tracing method also demonstrated that PACAP and CGRP were co-expressed by vagal and glossopharyngeal sensory neurons innervating the pharynx. These findings suggest that PACAP-IR nerve fibers in the epithelium and taste bud of the epiglottis and pharynx which originate from the vagal and glossopharyngeal sensory ganglia include nociceptors and chemoreceptors. Abstract: The majority of Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) strains isolated from severe STEC disease are those harboring the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE), which encodes factors involved in adherence to epithelial cells. However, LEE-negative STEC are increasingly isolated from clinical cases. STEC autoagglutinating adhesin (Saa) is widely used as a marker of adhesin in the absence of LEE. In the present study, we compared the adherence of 32 saa-harboring STEC strains to cultured epithelial cells in the absence or presence of d-mannose. In the absence of d-mannose, 19 strains were adherent to HEp-2 and Caco-2 cells, while 12 were non-adherent. One strain showed detachment of epithelial cells. The adherence of 13 strains was sensitive to the presence of d-mannose. The saa mutant of strain T141, in which adherence was mannose resistant, did not show a significant decrease in adherence compared to the wild type, suggesting a Saa-independent mechanism of adherence. saa-harboring STEC exhibited differential binding properties to epithelial cells, which could not be attributed to the number of C-terminal repeats of Saa, or to the expression of Saa as detected by Western blotting. Our results suggest that multiple adherence mechanisms are present in saa-harboring STEC, implying a high degree of diversity in this group of STEC. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Shigella-induced macrophage cell death is an important step in the induction of acute inflammatory responses that ultimately lead to bacillary dysentery. Cell death was previously reported to be dependent upon the activation of caspase-1 via interaction with IpaB secreted by intracellular Shigella, but in this study, we show that Shigella infection of macrophages can also induce cell death independent of caspase-1 or IpaB activity. Time-lapse imaging and electron microscopic analyses indicated that caspase-1-dependent and -independent cell death is morphologically indistinguishable and that both resemble necrosis. Analyses of Shigella mutants or Escherichia coli using co-infection with Listeria suggested that a component common to Gram-negative bacteria is involved in inducing caspase-1-independent cell death. Further studies revealed that translocation of bacterial lipid A into the cytosol of macrophages potentially mediates cell death. Notably, cell death induced by cytosolic bacteria was TLR4-independent. These results identify a novel cell death pathway induced by intracellular Gram-negative bacteria that may play a role in microbial-host interactions and inflammatory responses. We investigate the simultaneous effect of pressure P and shear flow on the crystallization process of polypropylene using a modified pressure–volume–temperature measurement system that has been developed in our laboratory. We focus on the inverse of half-conversion time 1/t1/2 that is defined by the inverse of the time when the relative crystallinity of system reaches to one half. It is found that the pressure dependence of the quantity 1/t1/2 can be expressed by a shifted degree of super-cooling ΔT(P) by pressure. We also find that 1/t1/2(T,P,γ˙) under both pressure and shear flow can be described by a sum of 1/t1/2(T,P,γ˙=0) under no shear and a linearly increasing term with shear rate γ˙. A 10-year-old girl suffered from chest discomfort during exercise. She experienced an acute myocardial infarction accompanied by an obstruction in an orifice to the left coronary artery. An emergency operation revealed that the aortic valve was quadricuspid, and a left-sided small cusp had adhered to the aortic wall resulting in an unusual sac with a tiny slit. Resection of the sac disclosed the ostium to left coronary artery. Blood toward the left coronary artery passed through the tiny slit. The mechanisms of obstruction in the coronary artery were uncertain. She recovered well after the aortic valve replacement with resection of the aortic cusps. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Complex vertebral malformation (CVM) is an autosomal recessive inherited defect in the Holstein breed. It causes intra-uterine mortality leading to repeat breeding and involuntary culling of cows. This study was carried out to show the prevalence of CVM carriers among Holstein cows in five dairy farms in Hiroshima Prefecture, South Western Japan and whether the defect could be inherited to crossbred F1 generation, when Japanese Black semen was used to inseminate a Holstein cow. Two hundreds Holstein cows were used in the study. Blood samples were collected from all cows in a heparinized tubes and genomic DNA was extracted with a commercial kit. Apart of the bovine solute carrier family 35 member 3 (SLC35A3) gene around the suspected mutation (G to T) was amplified with an allele specific polymerase chain reaction (AS-PCR). For DNA sequencing, PCR products of 522bp were obtained from the genomic DNA of the cows. Out of 200 examined cows, 26 cows (13.0%) were found to be CVM carriers. Wild type cows showed amplification with the G-specific primer pair but not with the T-specific primer pair, while carrier ones showed amplification of both the G- and T-specific primers, exhibited two DNA bands of 395bp. Based on the clinical history of the cows, lowered reproductive performance was noticed in carrier ones. Out of four crossbred F1 calves (Holstein×Japanese Black), two were CVM carrier. Crossbred F1 could inherit the CVM defect when Japanese Black semen used to inseminate a carrier Holstein cow. In conclusion, the study reports the occurrence of CVM among Holstein cows in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan; moreover, it describes the first cases of CVM in crossbred F1 generation. Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships among body condition score (BCS), body weight and plasma metabolite concentrations, and resumption of ovarian cycles postpartum in high-producing dairy cows in a subtropical region in Japan. The study was conducted between May 2001 and January 2003 in a commercial dairy farm in Hiroshima. Cows were kept in free-stall barns with sawdust and wood shavings for bedding, and fed a total mixed ration consisting of alfalfa, timothy and oat hay, corn, tofu ground-wet, beet pulp, cottonseed and soybean. Milk samples were collected twice weekly from 2 to 11 weeks postpartum, and progesterone concentrations in skim milk were determined by ELISA. At 8 and 2 weeks before calving and 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 weeks after calving, both BCS and body weights were determined and blood samples were collected to determine plasma concentrations of total cholesterol (T-cholesterol), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), total protein, and urea nitrogen. The average 305 days milk yield was 10,422kg. Out of 110 cows, 44.5% had normal resumption (ovulation occurred ≤45 days after calving, followed by regular ovarian cycles), 33.6% had a prolonged luteal phase (luteal activity >20 days), 12.7% had delayed first ovulation (no ovulation until ≤45 days after calving), 4.6% had a short luteal phase (luteal activity &#60;10 days, except in the first cycle), and the remaining 4.6% had cessation of cyclicity (no luteal activity ≥14 days between cycles). The BCS of cows with delayed first ovulation were lower than the BCS of cows with normal resumption and prolonged luteal phase at 5 weeks (2.9±0.1 versus 3.1±0.1 and 3.2±0.1; P &#60;0.05), 7 weeks (2.8±0.1 versus 3.1±0.1 and 3.2±0.1; P &#60;0.01), 9 weeks (2.7±0.1 versus 3.0±0.1 and 3.2±0.1; P &#60;0.01) and 11 weeks (2.6±0.1 versus 3.0±0.1 and 3.2±0.1; P &#60;0.01) after calving. None of the plasma parameters differed (P >0.05) among different groups of cows. Cows loosing ≥1 unit BCS after calving had a prolonged interval to commencement of luteal activity, and were at greater risk of having delayed first ovulation. Poor postpartum nutritional status was associated with delayed first ovulation postpartum. Regular monitoring of BCS before and after calving would be useful in nutritional management, and help in preventing delayed first ovulation in high-producing dairy cows. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effects of abnormal ovarian cycles during the pre-service postpartum period on subsequent reproductive performance of high-producing Holstein cows. The study was conducted in a commercial dairy farm with approximately 150 lactating cows, in a subtropical region of Japan. Animals were kept in free-stall barn, and fed a total mixed ration. Cows that calved from June 2001 to July 2002 were included in the study. Milk samples were collected twice weekly from 2 to 11 weeks postpartum, and progesterone concentrations in skim milk were determined by ELISA. After a voluntary waiting period of 40 days, cows detected in estrus were bred by artificial insemination (AI). Pregnancy was confirmed by palpation per rectum 40–70 days after AI. Out of a total of 91 cases, 39 (42.9%) had normal ovarian cycles (ovulation within 45 days after calving, followed by normal ovarian cycles), 32 (35.2%) had prolonged luteal phase (i.e. luteal activity for >20 days), and 12 (13.2%) had anovulation or delayed first ovulation (i.e. first ovulation did not occur until >45 days after calving). The remaining (8.8%) had other types of abnormalities. When compared with cows with a normal ovarian cycle, prolonged luteal phase cows had a lower 100 days AI submission rate, conception rate and pregnancy rate (84.2% versus 56.3%; P<0.05, 50% versus 16.7%; P<0.05 and 42.1% versus 9.4%; P<0.01, respectively), and longer intervals to first AI and to conception (67±6 days versus 98±7 days and 95±9 days versus 136±11 days; P<0.01 for each). Similarly, when compared with cows with normal ovarian cycles, those with anovulation had lower 100 days conception rate and pregnancy rate (50% versus 0%; P<0.05 and 42.1% versus 0%; P<0.01, respectively), and longer intervals to first AI and to conception (67±6 days versus 93±12 days; P<0.05 and 95±9 days versus 155±14 days; P<0.01, respectively). Survival analysis of the data for calving to conception interval showed that cows with prolonged luteal phase or anovulation were getting pregnant at a slower rate, and took longer to get pregnant than the cows with normal resumption of ovarian cyclicity postpartum. In conclusion, abnormal ovarian cycles during the pre-service period postpartum adversely affected reproductive performance, including AI submission rate, pregnancy rate, interval to first AI, and calving to conception interval in high-producing Holstein cows. Nuclear receptor coactivators are involved in receptor-mediated transcriptional activation of target genes in a hormone-sensitive manner, and the mechanism of their transactivation has been studied in recent years. The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) interacts with several coactivators, including steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1) family and CREB-binding protein (CBP). Since coactivators function as transcription amplifiers, subtle changes in expression levels of coactivators in certain cells would markedly intensify receptor-mediated transcriptional activity. The regulation of coactivators by glucocorticoid action, however, has not yet been clarified. In this study, we have shown that one of the coactivators interacting with GR, SRC-1, is downregulated by dexamethasone (DEX) both in vivo and in vitro. In experiments on Sprague–Dawley rats in vivo, the downregulation of SRC-1 was observed in heart, stomach, kidney, liver, and cerebrum, and in experiments on two types of kidney-derived cells in vitro, similar downregulation of SRC-1 was demonstrated in both types of cells. DEX-mediated downregulation of SRC-1 mRNA recovered in 4–8 h, while the downregulation of SRC-1 protein lasted for 12 h and its levels returned to the basal level, 24 h after DEX treatment. 90 Sr specific activity in the teeth of young cattle that were abandoned in Kawauchi village and Okuma town located in the former evacuation areas of the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident were measured. Additionally, specific activity in contaminated surface soils sampled from the same area was measured. (1) All cattle teeth examined were contaminated with 90 Sr. The specific activity, however, varied depending on the developmental stage of the teeth during the FNPP accident; teeth that had started development before the accident exhibited comparatively lower values, while teeth developed mainly after the accident showed higher values. (2) Values of 90 Sr-specific activity in teeth formed after the FNPP accident were higher than those of the bulk soil but similar to those in the exchangeable fraction (water and CH 3 COONH 4 soluble fractions) of the soil. The findings suggest that 90 Sr was incorporated into the teeth during the process of development, and that 90 Sr in the soluble and/or leachable fractions of the soil might migrate into teeth and contribute to the amount of 90 Sr in the teeth. Thus, the concentration of 90 Sr in teeth formed after the FNPP accident might reflect the extent of 90 Sr pollution in the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to investigate the resumption of ovarian cyclicity postpartum in high-producing dairy cows in commercial dairy farms under subtropical conditions. The cows were kept in a free-stall or tie-stall barn. Milk samples were collected from cows twice weekly, and progesterone in the skim milk was assayed by double-antibody ELISA. Cows were examined rectally and vaginoscopically at 2-week intervals after calving. Body condition score (BCS) and body weights were taken before and after calving. A cow was considered to have resumed ovarian cyclicity on the day of ovulation if followed by regular ovarian cycles. Thirty seven percent (n=20/54) of the cows had normal resumption of ovarian cyclicity (resumption within 45 days after calving), and 63% (n=34/54) had delayed resumption (resumption did not occur until >45 days after calving). Delayed resumption Type I (one or more ovarian cycles with luteal phase >20 days, i.e. prolonged luteal phase; 31.5%) and delayed resumption Type II (first ovulation did not occur until ≥45 days after calving, i.e. delayed first ovulation; 24.1%) were the most common types of delayed resumptions. Almost half (46.3%) of the cows did not resume their ovarian cyclicity until >65 days postpartum. Cows with delayed resumption Type I had a higher incidence of abnormal cervico-vaginal discharge (64.7%) and incomplete uterine involution (94.1%) compared to cows with normal resumption (P<0.01). The BCS of cows with delayed resumption Type II were lower than those of normal resumption cows at 5 weeks and later in the postpartum period (P<0.05). Approximately two-thirds of high-producing cows had delayed resumption of ovarian cyclicity postpartum. Prolonged luteal phase and delayed first ovulation were two important ovarian dysfunctions that delayed postpartum resumption of cyclicity in high-producing dairy cows. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The relationship between the CO 2 radical intensity and the absorbed dose (dose response curve) of tooth enamel of Japanese macaque was observed by electron spin resonance and the detection limit of our system was estimated to be 33.5 mGy. Using the dose response curve, external exposure dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture were examined.
