Abstract

Biologically active compounds are considered as powerful food factors that elicit profound effects on the maintenance of human health, and disease prevention. The research into how bioactive compounds work and their role in disease prevention in vitro and in vivo is rapidly expanding. Carotenoids are one among several classes of biologically active compounds that have been reported to possess greater antioxidant and anti-cancer activity. Today, this emerging class of nutrients is the driving force in the nutritional supplement industry, and serves as a new frontier in cancer and cardiovascular research. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. It is the second most common disease responsible for maximum mortality with about 8.2 million deaths, and the global cancer burden rises to 14.1 million new cases in 2012. This review mainly focused to summarize the anti-cancer therapeutic targets of carotenoids by highlighting the important hallmarks of cancer in terms of (i) cell cycle arrest, (ii) resistance to apoptosis, (iii) metastasis and (iv) angiogenesis alongside the relation of carotenoids in cancer epidemiology. Abstract

We investigated whether various carotenoids present in foodstuffs were potentially involved in cancer-preventing action on human prostate cancer. The effects of 15 kinds of carotenoids on the viability of three lines of human prostate cancer cells, PC-3, DU 145 and LNCaP, were evaluated. When the prostate cancer cells were cultured in a carotenoid-supplemented medium for 72 h at 20 micromol/L, 5,6-monoepoxy carotenoids, namely, neoxanthin from spinach and fucoxanthin from brown algae, significantly reduced cell viability to 10.9 and 14.9% for PC-3, 15.0 and 5.0% for DU 145, and nearly zero and 9.8% for LNCaP, respectively. Acyclic carotenoids such as phytofluene, zeta-carotene and lycopene, all of which are present in tomato, also significantly reduced cell viability. On the other hand, phytoene, canthaxanthin, beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin did not affect the growth of the prostate cancer cells. DNA fragmentation of nuclei in neoxanthin- and fucoxanthin-treated cells was detected by in situ TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Neoxanthin and fucoxanthin were found to reduce cell viability through apoptosis induction in the human prostate cancer cells. These results suggest that ingestion of leafy green vegetables and edible brown algae rich in neoxanthin and fucoxanthin might have the potential to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Abstract

Despite the interest in the beneficial roles of dietary carotenoids in human health, little is known about their solubilization from foods to mixed bile micelles during digestion and the intestinal uptake from the micelles. We investigated the absorption of carotenoids solubilized in mixed micelles by differentiated Caco-2 human intestinal cells, which is a useful model for studying the absorption of dietary compounds by intestinal cells. The micelles were composed of 1 micromol/L carotenoids, 2 mmol/L sodium taurocholate, 100 micromol/L monoacylglycerol, 33.3 micromol/L fatty acid and phospholipid (0-200 micromol/L). The phospholipid content of micelles had profound effects on the cellular uptake of carotenoids. Uptake of micellar beta-carotene and lutein was greatly suppressed by phosphatidylcholine (PC) in a dose-dependent manner, whereas lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC), the lipolysis product of PC by phospholipase A2 (PLA2), markedly enhanced both beta-carotene and lutein uptake. The addition of PLA2 from porcine pancreas to the medium also enhanced the uptake of carotenoids from micelles containing PC. Caco-2 cells could take up 15 dietary carotenoids, including epoxy carotenoids, such as violaxanthin, neoxanthin and fucoxanthin, from micellar carotenoids, and the uptakes showed a linear correlation with their lipophilicity, defined as the distribution coefficient in 1-octanol/water (log P(ow)). These results suggest that pancreatic PLA2 and lysoPC are important in regulating the absorption of carotenoids in the digestive tract and support a simple diffusion mechanism for carotenoid absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Abstract

In the current study, new advanced oxidation-resistant FeCrAl oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys were developed via the control of composition-processing conditions for nuclear energy systems. For the first time, a single-crystal like recrystallized FeCrAl ODS alloy was achieved with a unique crystallographic texture of (110) 〈211〉 and a high number density of fine nanoscale oxide particles. Evaluation of yield strengths at different temperatures showed higher values in transverse direction than longitudinal direction. The orientation dependence of yield strength up to 800 °C was attributed to lower value of Schmid factor in transverse direction. Accordingly, the critical resolved shear stress of this practical class of advanced materials was calculated in various temperatures. • A single crystal like FeCrAl ODS alloy with a texture of 110 1 1 ¯ 2 was achieved. • Orientation dependence of yield strength was attributed to different Schmid factors. • The τ CRSS of advanced FeCrAl ODS alloys was calculated in various temperatures. 42. Ion beam analysis of helium and its irradiation effect on hydrogen trapping in W single crystals

Abstract

Retention of He implanted into W single crystals and the He irradiation effects on H behavior were studied by ion beam analysis techniques. During implantation of 4He+ with 2–10 keV at 295 K, an accumulation of H started in the He implanted layer when the retained He concentration saturated. For the crystal irradiated by 10 keV He+ at 820 K, a remarkable increase of H was found in the He saturated layer, after stopping the implantation and cooling down the crystal below 400 K. Though blisters and exfoliation were observed for the surface irradiated at 820 K, less lattice disorder was found in the implanted layer and the thermal release of H occurred at lower temperature, in comparison with the crystal implanted at 295 K. Abstract

Pyrosilicate scintillation crystals are expected to be the next generation scintillators, because they have good light output and no hygroscopic nature. In this work, (Ce 0.01 Gd 0.90 Y 0.09) 2 Si 2 O 7 (Ce:Y-GPS) crystal was grown by the floating zone method. Emission wavelengths of this material were at 360 and 380 nm originated from Ce3+ 5d-4f transition, and these emission peaks were located at shorter wavelength side compared with Ce-doped (Gd, La) 2 Si 2 O 7 due to the change of the crystal field. Gamma-ray-excited pulse height and scintillation decay measurements showed that Ce:Y-GPS had a light output of 48,000 ± 3000 photons/MeV, FWHM energy resolution of 11.8 ± 0.5% at 662 keV and the decay time components of 42 ± 1 ns (58 ± 2%) and 180 ± 10 ns (42 ± 2%). • (Ce 0.01 , Gd 0.90 , Y 0.09) 2 Si 2 O 7 crystal was grown by the floating zone method. • This crystal had emission wavelengths of around 360 and 380 nm. • It had a light output of 48,000 ± 3000 photons/MeV. • It had decay times of 42 ± 1 ns (58 ± 2%) and 180 ± 10 ns (42 ± 2%).
