Navigation skills are essential for independent living as they allow us to explore our environment; find our way to new locations, refine pathways to familiar locations and retrace our route home. Alongside motor coordination difficulties, there is evidence that individuals with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD/Dyspraxia) experience spatial processing difficulties, which are known to negatively affect navigation abilities. However, although self-reports indicate that adults with DCD have difficulties with sense of direction and navigation, no known studies have measured navigation abilities and strategies in adults with DCD. Furthermore, given evidence that individuals with DCD report higher levels of anxiety, we will additionally investigate associations between anxiety and navigation in this group. This study compares navigation abilities, navigation strategies and spatial anxiety in adults with and without DCD. Participants include 226 Adults aged 18–55 years, across two groups 1) DCD (N = 138, 111 F:25 M; 2:Other) 2); Typically Developing (N = 88, 77 F: 11 M). In this cross-sectional study, participants completed a series of tasks on the online Qualtrics platform. This included the Adult Developmental Coordination Disorder Checklist, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Wayfinding Anxiety Measure, the Wayfinding Questionnaire, the Wayfinding Strategy Questionnaire, and a navigation task. Our analysis shows that 1) compared to those with typical development, individuals with DCD have similar navigation performance but lower navigation and orientation scores, and distance estimation scores. 2) Movement co-ordination difficulties were only a significant predictor of landmark recognition and egocentric path route knowledge, and played no role for other aspects of navigation performance. 3) For wayfinding strategy use the DCD group used orientation strategies significantly less often than those with typical development, however there was no group difference in the use of route strategies. 4) The DCD group had significantly higher spatial anxiety scores across navigation, manipulation and imagery spatial sub-domains, even after controlling for general anxiety. 5) Spatial navigation anxiety was a significant predictor of navigational skill for all three wayfinding measures (navigation & orientation, distance estimation and spatial anxiety). The findings establish benchmarks of navigational skills in DCD and highlight spatial anxiety and route strategies as factors that may inhibit navigation success and could help specify suitable intervention targets. • This was the first study to investigate navigational abilities in adults with DCD. • Compared to controls, individuals with DCD have similar navigation performance but lower navigation and orientation scores, and distance estimation scores. Objectives: Hamstring injuries in athletes can lead to significant time away from competition as a result of persistent posterior thigh pain. These cases are often difficult to treat as the state of the tissues alone cannot explain symptoms. In non-athletic populations with persistent pain, disruptions to tactile, proprioceptive, and spatial cortical representations exist, which has led to promising brain-based treatments. Here, we explored whether athletes with persistent posterior thigh pain also display impairments in these cortical representations.Design: Cross-sectional study.Methods: Fourteen male professional athletes with persistent posterior thigh pain ('Patients') and 14 pain-free age, sport, body mass index and level-matched controls ('Controls') participated. The tactile cortical representation was assessed using two-point discrimination (TPD) threshold and accuracy of tactile localisation; the proprioceptive cortical representation was assessed using a left/right judgement task; spatial processing was assessed using an auditory detection task.Results: TPD thresholds were similar for Patients and Controls (p=0.70). Patients were less accurate at localising tactile stimuli delivered to their affected leg, slower to make left/right judgements when the lower limb image corresponded to the side of their affected leg, and less accurate at detecting auditory stimuli delivered near their affected leg, when compared to their healthy leg or to the leg of Controls (p<0.01 for all).Conclusions: Leg-specific tactile, proprioceptive, and spatial processing deficits exist in athletes with persistent posterior thigh pain. Abstract Research has shown an association between understanding of the approximate number system (ANS) and mathematical achievement, however, the mechanism of the association remains unresolved. This study was conducted to test whether visuospatial tasks (typically based on visual form perception) may account for the association. A total of 271 children around 10 years of age were recruited from three primary schools in Beijing, China. The children were administered eight tasks to assess their visuospatial processing and arithmetic fluency, as well as their processing speed and nonverbal intelligence as cognitive covariates. Visual form perception scores were measured by a figure matching task and a visual short-term memory task and fully accounted for the correlation between ANS acuity and arithmetic fluency. Spatial processing scores as measured by a spatial short-term memory task and a mental rotation task were not significant in the correlation. The results suggest that visual form perception is the cognitive mechanism explaining the association between ANS acuity and arithmetic fluency. Only visuospatial processes that rely on visual form perception promote ANS and arithmetic fluency. Abstract Spatial processing is a critical component for survival. This domain of information processing has been extensively studied in rats and mice. Limited work has examined the capacity of other rodent species, like the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), to process spatial information. The Morris water task (MWT) is a classic spatial task that has been used to examine spatial cognition in rodents. This task involves an animal developing configural relationships between extra-maze cues and the location of a hidden platform to successfully escape from a pool of water. The current study compared performance in the MWT between rats and prairie voles. Rats were observed to outperform prairie voles in key aspects of the task including latency to find the platform, directness of swim paths to the platform, and degrees of heading error. These results may be attributed to potential interspecies differences in spatial cognition, stress reactivity, physiology, or motivation. This study provides the foundation for future work investigating the spatial cognition of prairie voles and the factors that contribute to water task performance in rodents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract An individual's socio-economic status can increase their vulnerability to, and ability to prepare for and recover in the aftermath of a disaster. People from low socio-economic (LSE) backgrounds often face greater disaster risks, but are least prepared for disaster events due to a number of factors including a lack of housing affordability, low income and literacy levels. While there is an established relationship between a person's socio-economic status and disaster vulnerability, very little is understood about the disaster information seeking needs and preferences of LSE population groups and how this affects their levels of disaster awareness. This paper addresses this gap through a comparative study of LSE and non-LSE population groups to identify key disaster information sources and how it shapes levels of disaster awareness. A survey of 224 residents was conducted, and multivariate regression analysis of both LSE and non-LSE respondents revealed a trend of disaster passivity in both population groups. English language proficiency, occupation, familiarity with the local environment are the most important factors influencing disaster awareness among the LSE population groups. For non-LSE population groups, disaster awareness is gender-dependent with females showing higher levels of awareness. Overall, television was the most trusted information source regardless of socio-economic status. The results provide a better understanding of the underlying impact of socio-economic status on disaster awareness and information seeking behaviour, which can assist practitioners and policy makers in making informed decisions on disaster mitigation strategies to reduce the disaster risk vulnerability of targeted population groups. Age-related hearing loss is a prominent deficit, afflicting approximately half of the geriatric population. In many cases, the person may have no deficits in detecting sounds, but nonetheless suffers from a reduced ability to understand speech, particularly in a noisy environment. While rodent models have shown that there are a variety of age-related changes throughout the auditory neuraxis, far fewer studies have investigated the effects at the cortical level. Here I review recent evidence from a non-human primate model of age-related hearing loss at the level of the core (primary auditory cortex, A1) and belt (caudolateral field, CL) in young and aged animals with normal detection thresholds. The findings are that there is an increase in both the spontaneous and driven activity, an increase in spatial tuning, and a reduction in the temporal fidelity of the response in aged animals. These results are consistent with an age-related imbalance of excitation and inhibition in the auditory cortex. Although emerging neuropsychological evidence supports the involvement of temporal areas, and in particular the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), in allocentric neglect deficits, the role of STG in healthy spatial processing remains elusive. While several functional brain imaging studies have demonstrated involvement of the STG in tasks involving explicit stimulus-centered judgments, prior rTMS studies targeting the right STG did not find the expected neglect-like rightward bias in size judgments using the conventional landmark task. The objective of the current study was to investigate whether disruption of the right STG using inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) could impact stimulus-centered, allocentric spatial processing in healthy individuals. A lateralized version of the landmark task was developed to accentuate the dissociation between viewer-centered and stimulus-centered reference frames. We predicted that inhibiting activity in the right STG would decrease accuracy because of induced rightward bias centered on the line stimulus irrespective of its viewer-centered or egocentric locations. Eleven healthy, right-handed adults underwent the lateralized landmark task. After viewing each stimulus, participants had to judge whether the line was bisected, or whether the left (left-long trials) or the right segment (right-long trials) of the line was longer. Participants repeated the task before (pre-rTMS) and after (post-rTMS) receiving 20 min of 1 Hz rTMS over the right STG, the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG), and the vertex (a control site) during three separate visits. Linear mixed models for binomial data were generated with either accuracy or judgment errors as dependent variables, to compare 1) performance across trial types (bisection, non-bisection), and 2) pre- vs. post-rTMS performance between the vertex and the STG and the vertex and the SMG. Line eccentricity (z = 4.31, p < 0.0001) and line bisection (z = 5.49, p < 0.0001) were significant predictors of accuracy. In the models comparing the effects of rTMS, a significant two-way interaction with STG (z = −3.09, p = 0.002) revealed a decrease in accuracy of 9.5% and an increase in errors of the right-long type by 10.7% on bisection trials, in both left and right viewer-centered locations. No significant changes in leftward errors were found. These findings suggested an induced stimulus-centered rightward bias in our participants after STG stimulation. Notably, accuracy or errors were not influenced by SMG stimulation compared to vertex. Students' ability to solve mathematical problems is a standard mathematical skill; however, its cognitive correlates are unclear. Thus, this study aimed to examine whether spatial processing (mental rotation, paper folding, and the Corsi blocks test) and logical reasoning (abstract and concrete syllogisms) were correlated with mathematical problem-solving (word problems and geometric proofing) for college students. The regression results showed that after controlling for gender, age, general IQ, language processing, cognitive processing (visual perception, attention, and memory skills), and number sense and arithmetic computation skills, spatial processing skills still predicted mathematical problem-solving and geometry skills in Chinese college students. Contrastingly, logical reasoning measures related to syllogisms did not predict after controlling for these variables. Further, notably, it did not correlate significantly with geometry performance when no control variables were included. Our results suggest that spatial processing is a significant component of math skills involving word and geometry problems (even after controlling for multiple key cognitive factors). • Revealed the key cognitive factor predicting mathematical problem-solving. • The additional factors were strictly controlled. Emotional processing is probably the most crucial tool for orienting oneself in our everyday social life and has been considered to be highly automatic for a long time. Dual task (DT) research shows that information competing for working memory resources impairs the identification of emotional facial expressions. Effects of cognitive load in DT paradigms have been confirmed in numerous neuroimaging studies. However, interference occurring during a DT comprised of decoding emotional facial expressions and a visuo-spatial working memory task has yet to be visualized. To investigate the DT interference effect on brain areas associated not only with working memory, but also emotional and visuo-spatial processing, we recorded brain activation within the prefrontal cortex and parietal-occipital sensory areas using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) simultaneously. Our study consisted of N = 36 participants (27 female) performing the following tasks: a) Corsi blocks, b) identification of emotional facial expressions or c) DT comprising of tasks a) and b). We predicted higher activation of the prefrontal cortex during DT and corresponding reduced P100 and P300 amplitudes. As expected, fNIRS measurements revealed significantly higher neuronal activation within the prefrontal cortex in the DT condition. When comparing DT to the single tasks, the P100 amplitude was reduced, but the P300 amplitude did not show the expected reduction. Our findings underline that at least some aspects of emotional processing are not entirely automatic, but depend on prefrontal control and are therefore affected by cognitive load, in particular visuo-spatial working memory resources. Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies have identified the specific electrophysiological markers of advance preparation in cued task-switching paradigms. However, it is not yet completely clear whether there is a single task-independent preparatory mechanism for task-switching or whether preparation for a switch can be selectively influenced by the domain of the task to be performed. To address this question, we employed a cued-task switching paradigm requiring participants to repeat or to switch between a semantic and a spatial task. The behavioural results showed a significant switch cost for both domains. The ERP findings, however, revealed that switch and repeat trials for semantic and spatial domains differed in the amplitude modulation of an early P2 and a sustained negativity both expressed over fronto-central scalp regions. Further differences between the two domains also emerged over posterior-parietal electrodes. This pattern of data thus shows that advance preparation in task-switching can be selectively modulated by the domain of the task to be performed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated if the neural mechanisms involved in processing distance (near and far) and frame of reference (egocentric and allocentric) can be dissociated. 36 participants completed a conjunction visual search task using either an egocentric (deciding if the target was to their left or right) or an allocentric (deciding if the target was to the left or right of a reference object) frame. Both tasks were performed in near (57 cm) and far (171 cm) space conditions. Participants were separated into three groups, and each received transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to a different site; right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC), right ventral occipital cortex (rVO), or right frontal eye field (rFEF) in addition to sham TMS. The results show that rFEF is critical in the processing of each search at each distance whereas, contrary to previous detection results, TMS over rVO did not affect performance for any condition. TMS over rPPC revealed that specialised egocentric processing in the parietal cortex does not generalise to far space, providing evidence of a separation of the reference frame/distance conflation in the literature. Pure alexia is characterized by an increased word-length effect in reading. However, this disorder is usually accompanied by right homonymous hemianopia, which itself can cause a mildly increased word-length effect. Some alexic studies have used hemianopic patients with modest word-length effects: it is not clear (a) whether they had pure alexia and (b) if not, whether their results could be explained by the field defect. Our goal was to determine if impairments in visual processing claimed to be related to alexia could be replicated in homonymous hemianopia alone. Twelve healthy subjects performed five experiments used in two prior studies of alexia, under both normal and simulated hemianopic conditions, using a gaze-contingent display generated by an eye-tracker. We replicated the increased word-length effect for reading time with right homonymous hemianopia, and showed a similar effect for a lexical decision task. Simulated hemianopia impaired scanning accuracy for letter or number strings, and slowed object part processing, though the effect of configuration was not greater under hemianopic viewing. Hemianopia impaired the identification of words whose letters appeared and disappeared sequentially on the screen, with better performance on a cumulative presentation in which the letters remained on the screen. The reporting of trigrams was less accurate with hemianopia, though syllabic structure did not influence the results. We conclude that some impairments that have been attributed to the processing defects underlying alexia may actually be due to right homonymous hemianopia. This study investigated whether the spatial terms high and low , when used in sentence contexts implying a non-literal interpretation, trigger similar spatial associations as would have been expected from the literal meaning of the words. In three experiments, participants read sentences describing either a high or a low auditory event (e.g., The soprano sings a high aria vs. The pianist plays a low note ). In all Experiments, participants were asked to judge (yes/no) whether the sentences were meaningful by means of up/down (Experiments 1 and 2) or left/right (Experiment 3) key press responses. Contrary to previous studies reporting that metaphorical language understanding differs from literal language understanding with regard to simulation effects, the results show compatibility effects between sentence implied pitch height and response location. The results are in line with grounded models of language comprehension proposing that sensory motor experiences are being elicited when processing literal as well as non-literal sentences. Abstract: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure human brain activity during tasks demanding selective attention to auditory or visual stimuli delivered in concurrent streams. Auditory stimuli were syllables spoken by different voices and occurring in central or peripheral space. Visual stimuli were centrally or more peripherally presented letters in darker or lighter fonts. The participants performed a phonological, spatial or “simple” (speaker-gender or font-shade) discrimination task in either modality. Within each modality, we expected a clear distinction between brain activations related to nonspatial and spatial processing, as reported in previous studies. However, within each modality, different tasks activated largely overlapping areas in modality-specific (auditory and visual) cortices, as well as in the parietal and frontal brain regions. These overlaps may be due to effects of attention common for all three tasks within each modality or interaction of processing task-relevant features and varying task-irrelevant features in the attended-modality stimuli. Nevertheless, brain activations caused by auditory and visual phonological tasks overlapped in the left mid-lateral prefrontal cortex, while those caused by the auditory and visual spatial tasks overlapped in the inferior parietal cortex. These overlapping activations reveal areas of multimodal phonological and spatial processing. There was also some evidence for intermodal attention-related interaction. Most importantly, activity in the superior temporal sulcus elicited by unattended speech sounds was attenuated during the visual phonological task in comparison with the other visual tasks. This effect might be related to suppression of processing irrelevant speech presumably distracting the phonological task involving the letters. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Auditory neuropathy disrupts the neural representation of sound and may therefore impair processes contingent upon inter-aural integration. The aims of this study were to investigate binaural auditory processing in individuals with axonal (Friedreich ataxia) and demyelinating (Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease type 1A) auditory neuropathy and to evaluate the relationship between the degree of auditory deficit and overall clinical severity in patients with neuropathic disorders. Twenty-three subjects with genetically confirmed Friedreich ataxia and 12 subjects with Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease type 1A underwent psychophysical evaluation of basic auditory processing (intensity discrimination/temporal resolution) and binaural speech perception assessment using the Listening in Spatialized Noise test. Age, gender and hearing-level-matched controls were also tested. Speech perception in noise for individuals with auditory neuropathy was abnormal for each listening condition, but was particularly affected in circumstances where binaural processing might have improved perception through spatial segregation. Ability to use spatial cues was correlated with temporal resolution suggesting that the binaural-processing deficit was the result of disordered representation of timing cues in the left and right auditory nerves. Spatial processing was also related to overall disease severity (as measured by the Friedreich Ataxia Rating Scale and Charcot–Marie–Tooth Neuropathy Score) suggesting that the degree of neural dysfunction in the auditory system accurately reflects generalized neuropathic changes. Measures of binaural speech processing show promise for application in the neurology clinic. In individuals with auditory neuropathy due to both axonal and demyelinating mechanisms the assessment provides a measure of functional hearing ability, a biomarker capable of tracking the natural history of progressive disease and a potential means of evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. Abstract: To reveal the fundamental processes underlying the different stages of visual object perception, most studies have manipulated relatively complex images, such as photographs, line drawings of natural objects, or perceptual illusions. Here, rather than starting from complex images and working backward to infer simpler processes, we investigated how the visual system parses and integrates information contained in stimuli of the most basic variety. Simple scatterings of a few points of light were manipulated in terms of their numerosity, spatial extent, and organization, and high-density electrophysiological recordings were made from healthy adults engaged in an unrelated task. We reasoned that this approach permitted an uncontaminated view of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the related neural processes. We were guided in our predictions by the “frame-and-fill” model for object perception, whereby fast inputs to the dorsal stream of the visual “where” system first frame the spatial extent of visual objects, which are subsequently “filled-in” by the slower activation of the ventral stream of the visual “what” system. Our findings were consistent with this view, showing a rapidly-onsetting effect of spatial extent in dorsal stream sources, and later-onsetting effects due to dot number and symmetry, which were deemed to be more closely tied to the details of object identity, from ventral stream sources. This collection of observations provides an important baseline from which to understand the spatio-temporal properties of basic visual object perception, and from which to test dysfunction of this system in clinical populations. Abstract: Alcohol affects vision. However, the influence of alcohol on visual processing is largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effects of alcohol on visual spatiotemporal processing. We employed a visual paradigm, the shine through backward masking paradigm, in which a vernier is either presented alone or followed by a variety of mask. We investigated performance for women at blood alcohol levels of 0mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 600mg/kg and for men at 0mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 800mg/kg. When the vernier was presented alone, vernier offset discrimination was not affected by alcohol. When the vernier was followed by a mask, stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) between target and mask were significantly longer after alcohol intake. However, as a second experiment showed, spatial and temporal processing per se were not impaired by alcohol. In addition, spatial processing was not affected by moderate alcohol consumption. Hence, moderate consumption of alcohol does not affect visual processing per se. We propose that the longer SOAs after alcohol intake are related to changes in mechanisms of target stabilization rather than changes in spatial and temporal sensitivity as has been previously suggested. Decades of research have demonstrated that women experience higher rates of math anxiety – that is, negative affect when performing tasks involving numerical and mathematical skill – than men. Researchers have largely attributed this sex difference in math anxiety to factors such as social stereotypes and propensity to report anxiety. Here we provide the first evidence that the sex difference in math anxiety may be due in part to sex differences in spatial processing ability. In Study 1, undergraduate students completed questionnaires assessing their level of math anxiety and their aptitude and preference for processing spatial configurations and schematic images. The results support the hypothesis that the relation between sex and math anxiety is mediated by spatial processing ability. In Study 2, we replicate these results with a more diverse sample of adults. Implications for the prevention and remediation of math anxiety and math anxiety-related achievement deficits are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In patients with right brain damage and left visual neglect, attention tends to be captured by right-sided objects and cannot easily disengage from them. While these phenomena can account for several clinical and experimental patterns of performance such as biased visual search, its role is more controversial for other neglect-related signs, such as the typical rightward shifts in horizontal line bisection. It is thus important to see whether and how attentional orienting can bias line bisection in normal participants using standard clinical bisection stimuli. In 3 experiments, we explored the Attentional Repulsion Effect (ARE, ) on pre-bisected lines. Normal observers saw horizontal lines with a vertical bisection mark near the center, preceded by a cue to the left or right of the line, or by no cue. On each trial, observers indicated whether they saw the bisection mark to the left or at the right of the midpoint. We plotted the proportion of ‘seen-at-right’ responses as a function of the mark''s actual position. For uncued lines, the point of subjective equality was slightly at the left of the true center, consistent with the pseudoneglect phenomenon. Right-sided cues shifted the apparent bisection point to the left (and vice versa), as predicted by the ARE. Similar results occurred with different task instructions (compare the length of the left-sided line segment to the right-sided segment) and in the presence or absence of central fixation marks. Abstract: Visual deficits in early and high level processing nodes have been documented in Parkinson''s disease (PD). Non-motor high level visual integration deficits in PD seem to have a cortical basis independently of a low level retinal contribution. It is however an open question whether sensory and visual attention deficits can be separated in PD. Here, we have explicitly separated visual and attentional disease related patterns of performance, by using bias free staircase procedures measuring psychophysical contrast sensitivity across visual space under covert attention conditions with distinct types of cues (valid, neutral and invalid). This further enabled the analysis of patterns of dorsal–ventral (up–down) and physiological inter-hemispheric asymmetries. We have found that under these carefully controlled covert attention conditions PD subjects show impaired psychophysical performance enhancement by valid attentional cues. Interestingly, PD patients also show paradoxically increased visual homogeneity of spatial performance profiles, suggesting flattening of high level modulation of spatial attention. Finally we have found impaired higher level attentional modulation of contrast sensitivity in the visual periphery, where mechanisms of covert attention are at higher demands. Abstract: Multisensory neurons are now known to be widespread in low-level regions of the cortex usually thought of as being responsible for modality-specific processing. The auditory cortex provides a particularly striking example of this, exhibiting responses to both visual and somatosensory stimulation. Single-neuron recording studies in ferrets have shown that each of auditory fields that have been characterized using physiological and anatomical criteria also receives visual inputs, with the incidence of visually-sensitive neurons ranging from 15% to 20% in the primary areas to around 50% or more in higher-level areas. Although some neurons exhibit spiking responses to visual stimulation, these inputs often have subthreshold influences that modulate the responses of the cortical neurons to sound. Insights into the possible role played by the visual inputs can be obtained by examining their sources of origin and the way in which they alter the processing capabilities of neurons in the auditory cortex. These studies suggest that one of the functions of the visual input to auditory cortex is to sharpen the relatively imprecise spatial coding typically found there. Because the extent to which this happens varies between cortical fields, the investigation of multisensory interactions can also help in understanding their relative contributions to auditory perception. People often perceive a quantity of specific objects that appear as part of an overall group of items (a subset). This study investigates this type of perception among a population with mathematical leaning difficulties (MLD). Sixty-two participants (mean age: 26.82) reported the general and subset quantity of items using a subset quantity detection task or a conjunction visual search task. MLD had difficulties perceiving both the general quantity presented and the subset quantity of items. They also had difficulties preforming a conjunction visual search task, even when the task did not involve numerical processing. MLD has spatial difficulties in the form of visual search and subset quantity detection. The current study suggests that MLD might experience greater difficulties in daily tasks, which might be related to those tasks (e.g., detecting the amount of forks among other items of silverware on the table). Abstract: Previous work revealed that mental rotation is not purely inserted into a same-different discrimination task. Instead, response time (RT) is slowed to upright stimuli in blocks containing rotated stimuli compared to RT to the same upright stimuli in pure upright blocks. This interference effect is a result of maintaining readiness for mental rotation. In two experiments we investigated previous evidence that these costs depend upon distinct sub-processes for children and for adults. In Experiment 1, the maintaining costs turned out to be independent of the visual quality of the stimulus for adults but not so for children. Experiment 2 revealed that the maintaining costs were greatly reduced for adults when they performed mental rotation as a go-no-go task, but not so for children. Taken together, both experiments provide evidence that whereas perceptual processes seem to be important for school-age children to maintain readiness for mental rotation, response selection is relevant for adults. Abstract: The generation and presentation of tactile stimuli presents a unique challenge. Unlike vision and audition, in which standard equipment such as monitors and audio systems can be used for most experiments, tactile stimuli and/or stimulators often have to be tailor-made for a given study. Here, we present a novel tactile stimulator designed to present arbitrary spatio-temporal stimuli to the skin. The stimulator consists of 400 pins, arrayed over a 1cm2 area, each under independent computer control. The dense array allows for an unprecedented number of stimuli to be presented within an experimental session (e.g., up to 1200 stimuli per minute) and for stimuli to be generated adaptively. The stimulator can be used in a variety of modes and can deliver indented and scanned patterns as well as stimuli defined by mathematical spatio-temporal functions (e.g., drifting sinusoids). Abstract: The spatial relation between two objects may be described either precisely or more coarsely in abstract terms, denoted as coordinate and categorical descriptions, respectively. These descriptions may reflect the outcomes of two spatial coding processes, which are realized in the left- and right-hemisphere. Support for this account comes from visual field effects in categorical and coordinate judgment tasks and from patient studies. In the current study, this hypothesis was tested by using event-related potentials (ERPs) and source localization. ERPs yield information about the processing stage at which the hypothesized categorical and coordinate processing diverge due to different task demands, especially in our S1–S2 version of the Bar Dot task. A centrally presented Bar Dot (S1) was followed after 2.5s by a second one (S2) in the left or right visual field; participants had to judge whether S2 matched S1 at the categorical, or, in a second task, at the coordinate level. Behavioral measures revealed a left-field advantage in the coordinate task that was absent in the categorical task. S1s elicited stronger early and late bilateral posterior responses in the coordinate than in the categorical task, possibly related to a compensatory strategy at the level of encoding and spatial memory. S2s elicited only stronger early contralateral responses, and stronger late right-hemisphere responses in the categorical task. It is proposed that the left-field advantage in the coordinate task may be due to differences in spatial resolution in perceptual encoding of the left- and right-hemispheres that are largely unaffected by the task at hand. Abstract: The experiment validated and extended the finding of Ilan and Miller (1994) [A violation of pure insertion: mental rotation and choice reaction time. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Psychophysics 20, 520–536] that the mental rotation process is not purely inserted into a mirror-normal discrimination task. In contrast to their work we used other experimental stimuli (drawings of animals instead of characters), a different task (same/different comparison) and investigated this effect under a developmental perspective. Adults and children between the age of 8 and 10 took significantly longer to respond to upright drawings of animals in conditions containing rotated stimuli than in conditions containing only upright stimuli, indicating a violation of pure insertion. In general, we found evidence that the violation of pure insertion during a mental rotation task itself can be generalised across stimulus type, task, and subject populations. However, for children this effect was independent of the format of the stimuli, while for adults the effect was larger for mirror-imaged than for identical objects. This suggests that the violation of pure insertion might occur at different processing stages as a function of age. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Many aspects of spatial neglect can be explained as arising from competition for attentional selection, with salient ipsilesional stimuli emerging as the winner more often than contralesional stimuli. The outcome of the competition, however, can be affected both by bottom-up perceptual factors such as the gestalt properties of the display and by top-down factors such as expectancy or stimulus blocking. This study examines whether the competition for attentional selection can be modulated by manipulating the probability of the target''s location in hemispatial neglect. Five patients with left-sided hemispatial neglect and a group of control participants performed a visual target discrimination task. In equal probability blocks, the target appeared randomly in any of six possible horizontal locations (three left, three right) whereas in biased blocks, the target appeared in the mid-location on the left on 50% of the trials and in each of the other locations on 10% of the trials. The target appeared either alone or was accompanied by a distractor on the opposite side. The results showed that the spatial bias facilitated detection of all left-sided targets in the neglect group, but was more spatially specific in the control group. Furthermore, while distractors on either side interfered with target processing in both groups, the patterns differed across the visual field. Finally, the magnitude of facilitation due to the bias was greatest in the condition with the most inhibition, i.e. a left-sided target accompanied by a right-sided distractor in the neglect group. These data underscore the competitive push–pull relationship between different bottom-up and top-down attentional factors, particularly within neglect patients, in whom a strong ipsilesional attentional bias already exists. Abstract: The left inferior parietal cortex has been claimed to be the site of the verbal short-term store, yet imaging studies report activity of a homologous right-hemisphere region in verbal working memory tasks as well. In spite of its prevalent activity, right parietal contributions to verbal working memory are poorly understood. To clarify its role in verbal working memory performance, we tested a patient with a lesion in the right parietal lobe on verbal and spatial versions of the N-back task. The patient was impaired in all the spatial conditions regardless of load (0-, 1-, and 2-back), whereas in the verbal N-back he was impaired only in the conditions with a memory demand (1- and 2-back). Given that we had presented stimuli at multiple locations in the verbal N-back, however, it remained possible that the lesion impaired spatial representation rather than verbal working memory per se. With central stimulus presentation, his performance dramatically improved indicating that his difficulty with the N-back task was largely due to his poor visuospatial abilities. Abstract: The integration of spatial and temporal information is a prerequisite for skilled movements. Likewise, spatial and temporal information must be integrated to predict the potential collision (or otherwise) of two moving objects. In a previous blocked functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study [Neuroimage 20 (2003) S82] we showed that collision judgments (relative to size judgments) provoked a significant increase in neural activity in the left inferior parietal cortex (supramarginal gyrus). This result suggests that this region is involved in the integration of perceptual spatiotemporal information in addition to its known involvement in programming skilled actions. To further investigate the impact of the integration of temporal and spatial information on the left parietal cortex we conducted an event-related fMRI study in which we varied the difficulty of the collision (and the size) judgment tasks parametrically. Reaction times and error rates were used as behavioral measures of increasing task demands. There was a significant linear increase in reaction times and error rates during the collision and the size tasks over the four levels of task difficulty. A linear increase of the blood oxygen level-dependent signal in the left inferior parietal cortex was found only for the collision, not for the size, conditions. Neural activation in the left inferior parietal cortex thus paralleled the increasing demands on spatiotemporal integration. This result confirms that the left supramarginal gyrus integrates spatial and temporal information irrespective of motor demands. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: In this study, a face-in-the-crowd task was applied to examine the spatial detection of facial emotion as a function of depression and comorbid anxiety in the course of a psychotherapeutic inpatient treatment. Methods: Patients with unipolar depression (n=22) and normal controls (n=22) were tested twice, about 7 weeks apart, on a face-in-the-crowd task using displays of schematic faces. Half the patients were suffering from a comorbid anxiety disorder. Results: From test 1 to test 2, depressivity, frequency of negative thoughts, and worrying of patients improved significantly. At both sessions, depressed patients, irrespective of the presence of comorbid anxiety disorders, showed no performance differences in the detection of negative faces compared to controls. However, depressed patients with but not those without comorbid anxiety disorders were slower in responding to positive faces than controls. Both patient groups were slower in responding to the neutral faces'' condition than controls. Conclusions: Our data indicate a spatial processing deficit for positive facial expression in depressives with a comorbid anxiety disorder. This impairment, which appears to persist during remission, might be due to deficits in effortful visual search processes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The aim of the present study was to examine spatial processing of facial emotion in schizophrenic patients suffering from affective symptoms. A face-in-the-crowd task using schematic stimuli was administered to schizophrenic patients with flat affect (n=30), schizophrenic patients suffering from anhedonia (n=30), schizophrenic patients not suffering from anhedonia or flat affect (n=28), and a group of healthy controls (n=30). Participants searched displays of neutral schematic faces for a face with a positive or negative mouth expression. Schizophrenic patients manifested a general slowing of response speed compared to normal subjects. All patient groups as well as normal subjects found negative faces more quickly than positive faces amongst neutral faces. Unexpectedly, with increasing anhedonia as assessed by psychiatric rating, a more efficient spatial detection of positive facial expression was observed. For flat-affect patients only, efficiency of search for negative facial expression did not differ from that in the neutral face control condition. This response pattern indicates that, in flat-affect schizophrenic patients, spatial search of negative facial expression might be slowed after the initial engagement of search processes. The purpose of the present study was to investigate spatial processing performance in male and female CD-1 mice. A substantial literature supports the existence of significant sex differences in both human and rodent models of learning and memory. The nature of these differences is dependent upon the parameters of the task, species and strain of animal. In the present study, male and female CD-1 mice were trained for 3 days to perform a 4/8 spatial memory task in an eight-arm radial maze and then tested for a total of 5 days. On the final day of radial maze testing, male CD-1 mice committed marginally significantly fewer reference memory (RM) and significantly fewer working memory (WM) errors on the radial maze task than female CD-1 mice. In addition, female mice obtained significantly fewer rewards during the final two testing sessions. The present data provide the first evidence for sex differences in radial maze learning in the CD-1 mouse, a strain known for its estrogen insensitivity. Consistent with the majority of literature that supports sex differences in spatial processing in rodents, female CD-1 mice acquired significantly fewer rewards than male CD-1 mice during an eight-arm radial maze task. In the past decade, hyperspectral imaging has emerged and matured into one of the most powerful and rapidly growing methods for non-destructive food quality analysis and control. This paper demonstrates fast and automatic quantification of food ingredients with hyperspectral imaging in the visible and near-infrared range in combination with chemometrics and image processing techniques. The application of ingredient quantification in bread flour recipes requires high spatial resolution in addition to spectral discrimination power. Our results show that automatic and accurate quantification of all ingredients can be done, reaching pixel discrimination accuracies above 90% and ingredient quantification errors within the required 1% absolute error in weight. The classification accuracy obtained using 15 wavebands on the test images is around 15% higher than what was obtained with colour imaging. • Accurate ingredient discrimination (>90%) with VNIR hyperspectral imaging. • Accurate seed count based on spatial post-processing of classified image. • Accurate quantification of weight in non-seed ingredients. • Increased discrimination accuracy versus color imaging. Abstract: Here, we demonstrated that one''s own name attracts the subjective location of a visual target. We simultaneously presented observers their own name and others’ name in the left and right visual fields. A target circle was presented for 53ms around the center of the display 200ms after the names disappeared. Ten observers were required to manually reproduce the target location by pointing with the mouse. The results indicated that the observers significantly mislocalized the target 1.61′ on average toward the location of their own name. These observations indicated that the visual space is distorted by one''s own name, which biases the spatial distribution of visual attention. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• The first study to use brain imaging techniques to examine reactions to personally meaningful places. • Pictures of meaningful places (not objects) evoke activation of brain areas linked to emotional responses. • Neuroscientific methods provide advanced insight into cognitive and emotional aspects of place. • Spontaneous brain responses to personally meaningful places support their importance for urban planning. People are drawn towards personally meaningful places. Seeing or remembering those places improves mood and supports wellbeing. But existing evidence relies on self-reports and comparisons with unpleasant places. Using brain imaging techniques, we examined reactions towards images of personally meaningful places, meaningful objects, neutral places and objects, and pre-validated (IAPS) images, among 19 volunteers (10 female) between 19 and 53 years old. A whole brain analysis showed that meaningful places and IAPS images elicited the largest response in the amygdala, associated with the processing of emotion. Similarly high activity was found for the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), associated with self-referential processing, emotional appraisal, and memory processing. This was not found for meaningful objects or neutral places. The parahippocampal place area (PPA) showed enhanced activity only to personally meaningful places. Personally meaningful places clearly evoke distinctive neurological responses supporting the importance of this holistic and complex concept for human wellbeing and urban planning. Multitasking is ubiquitous in everyday life. It can have a detrimental effect on several cognitive abilities including spatial processing in both brain-damaged and healthy participants. The present study investigated, in healthy adults, the electrophysiological mechanisms associated with correct detection vs. misdetection of peripheral visual target(s) while processing concurrent visual or auditory stimuli. Correct responses were coupled with increased N1 amplitude under visual (i.e., intra-modal) load but not under auditory (i.e., cross-modal) load. Under visual load, error responses were associated to opposite patterns on N1/N2 components for unilateral and bilateral stimuli. In particular, errors were marked by significantly reduced N1 and N2 amplitude for the left and right visual field, respectively, whereas higher N1 amplitude was found for errors to bilateral targets. This suggests that early negative components represent the biological marker of target awareness under visual load, whereby correct target detection is grounded on a threshold criterion. These results provide an electrophysiological correlate for the allocation of capacity-limited cognitive resources during the concurrent processing of multiple and heterogeneous visual stimuli. • Multitasking affects behavioral and ERP visuo-spatial processing. • The automatic N1 component is modulated by visual attentional load. • Omission of visual targets is reflected in the modulation of N1 and N2 components. • A threshold criterion seems to be involved in visuo-spatial awareness. • High and low math-anxious people differ in response time but not in accuracy. • A larger P3b is elicited in rotated stimuli in highly math-anxious individuals. • Highly math-anxious people may devote more attentional effort to spatial tasks. Previous studies suggested that highly math-anxious (HMA) individuals invest more attentional resources than their low math-anxious (LMA) peers in numerical tasks, and have worse spatial skills. We aimed to explore whether they also need to apply more resources in spatial tasks. In this study, HMA and LMA individuals saw normal or mirror-reversed letters in six orientations and made mirror-normal decisions. In both groups, response times and errors increased with angular deviation from upright and the ERP mental rotation effect was found. However, HMAs were slower to respond than their LMA counterparts. Interestingly, the HMA group showed a larger P3b in greater deviations for normal letters and in all mirrored letters. Since P3b amplitude reflects the attentional resources invested in the categorization of relevant stimuli, HMA individuals may need to devote more processing effort than their LMA peers when performing mental rotation.
