• Old adults do not satisfy the acceptance of social support. • Two-way social support for old adults in China is above-average. • Receiving and giving social support differ in some influencing factors. This study aims to investigate the status and influencing factors of two-way social support among old adults. A cross-sectional study of 408 convenient samples of old adults was conducted using socio-demographic questionnaire, Brief 2-Way Social Support Scale, Modified Barthel index, General Well-being Schedule, Family APGAR Index, and Lubben Social Network Scale 6. The two-way social support score for old adults in China was (43.74±7.86), with the receiving and giving social support scoring (22.80±4.06) and (20.94±4.52), respectively. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that family care, residence place, socioeconomic status, and social network were associated with both receiving and giving social support. Chronic diseases and religious beliefs were related to receiving social support, while gender, general well-being, and residence form were related to giving social support. Tailored interventions based on the distinct influencing factors are needed to enhance old adults' social support both as recipients and providers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal method is widely used in the synthesis of perovskite-type oxides, whereas few studies are reported for the nucleation mechanism, so that the relationship between the crystal structures and reactive activities of reactants and products is still unknown. Herein, the reaction processes are analyzed on the basis of XRD, SEM and Raman characterizations, and the nucleation mechanism is investigated for the hydrothermal synthesis of MZrO 3 (M = Ba, Sr, Ca). We propose that the negative charged cyclic tetramer complexes [Zr 4 (OH) 8 (OH) 16 ]8- form in the hydrothermal reaction, which play major roles in the nucleation process. The tetramer complexes continually dehydrate and condensate to form substructural units composed of alkali-earth ions and 6-fold Zr tetramers; substructural units further dehydrate and distort to form perovskite structures. The reactive activation energy increases with the decreasing of M2+ (M = Ba, Sr, Ca) ionic radius because the incorporation of smaller A site ions in the perovskite structure is accompanied by greater rotation and distortion of the ZrO 6 octahedra, leading to the decrease of reactive activity accordingly. The growing complexity of real-world systems entails using policy portfolios rather than a single policy instrument to achieve multiple policy goals regarding sustainability. Crucial difficulties include identifying and evaluating policies and their applicable scenarios given numerous combinations. To address these issues, this research develops scenario-based policy representative exploration (SPRE), a systematic approach to exploring policy portfolios, discovering scenarios, and evaluating scenario-specific policy effectiveness in achieving multiple policy goals. SPRE is applied to a low-carbon energy diffusion model. Six policy goals are considered, including low-carbon diffusion rate, cumulative carbon taxes, subsidies, penalties, net interventions, and low-carbon profit. The resultant 232 Pareto-optimal policy portfolios are clustered into five categories and evaluated through representative policy analysis. The findings indicate the basic production profit of unit product and technology-push effect are significant scenario components influencing policy success; the initial proportion of low-carbon adopters or relative carbon reduction ratio do not contribute prominently to policy efficacy. The efficacies of policies are also distinguished in the discovered scenarios: subsidies are effective for the low-carbon transition when the marginal profit of un-low-carbon enterprises is low; carbon taxes and penalties are partially interchangeable; punitive policies are a double-edged sword that can harm potential low-carbon adopters with low profit. • Developing the SPRE framework for policy exploration. • Unit production profit and technology-push effect are crucial to policy success. • Initial low-carbon adoption proportion or relative carbon reduction ratio is not pivotal. • Subsidies are effective when profits for un-low-carbon enterprises are low. • Punitive measures are effective but should avoid harming potential low-carbon adopters. Stroke is a complex physiological process associated with intestinal flora dysbiosis and metabolic disorders. Dan-deng-tong-nao capsule (DDTN) is a traditional Chinese medicine used clinically to treat cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) for many years. However, little is known about the effects of DDTN in the treatment of CIRI from the perspective of gut microbiota and metabolites. This study aimed to investigate the regulatory roles of DDTN in endogenous metabolism and gut microbiota in CIRI rats, thus providing a basis for clinical rational drug use and discovering natural products with potential physiological activities in DDTN for the treatment of CIRI. The chemical composition of DDTN in vitro and in vivo was investigated using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC HRMS), followed by target prediction using reverse molecular docking. Secondly, a biological evaluation of DDTN ameliorating neural damage in CIRI was performed at the whole animal level. Then, an integrated omics approach based on UHPLC HRMS and 16S rRNA sequencing was proposed to reveal the anti-CIRI effect and possible mechanism of DDTN. Finally, exploring the intrinsic link between changes in metabolite profiles, changes in the intestinal flora, and targets of components to reveal DDTN for the treatment of CIRI. A total of 112 chemical components of DDTN were identified in vitro and 10 absorbed constituents in vivo. The efficacy of DDTN in the treatment of CIRI was confirmed by alleviating cerebral infarction and neurological deficits. After the DDTN intervention, 21 and 26 metabolites were significantly altered in plasma and fecal, respectively. Based on the fecal microbiome, a total of 36 genera were enriched among the different groups. Finally, the results of the network integration analysis showed that the 10 potential active ingredients of DDTN could mediate the differential expression of 24 metabolites and 6 gut microbes by targeting 25 target proteins. This study was the first to outline the landscapes of metabolites as well as gut microbiota regulated by DDTN in CIRI rats using multi-omics data, and comprehensively revealed the systematic relationships among ingredients, targets, metabolites, and gut microbiota, thus providing new perspectives on the mechanism of DDTN in the treatment of CIRI. Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) stockpiles contain significant amounts of Mn2+ and NH 4 +-N which pose a risk of environmental pollution. For EMR safe disposal, an innovative approach is proposed that involves direct sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide (Na 2 SiO 3 –NaOH) collaborative technology. This approach utilises Na 2 SiO 3 and NaOH as the solidifying agent and activator, respectively, to treat EMR without hazardous effects. The study also provides insights into the kinetics of Mn2+ leaching under the effect of Na 2 SiO 3 –NaOH. Leaching efficiency was determined by varying parameters such as stirring rate, reaction temperature, pH of the initial solution, Na 2 SiO 3 concentration, and reaction time to investigate the efficacy of this method. The study indicates that the co-treatment technology of Na 2 SiO 3 –NaOH can achieve maximum solidification efficiencies of 99.7% and 98.2% for Mn2+ and NH 4 +-N, respectively. The process can successfully solidify Mn2+ by synthesising Mn(OH) 2 and MnSiO 3 in an alkaline environment under optimal conditions including stirring rate of 450 rpm, initial solution pH of 8, test temperature of 40 °C, test time of 420 min, and Na 2 SiO 3 content of 5%. The findings of this study have confirmed that surface chemistry plays a vital role in regulating the test rate and the proposed equation accurately describes Mn2+ leaching kinetics. Overall, the co-treatment technology involving Na 2 SiO 3 –NaOH is a viable solution for EMR resource utilisation without compromising environmental safety. The household sector of China is responsible for 11.7% of national energy consumption and 12.6% of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions in 2015. Thus, revealing the determinants of household CO 2 emissions (HCE) is extremely important for national efforts towards emissions mitigation. In this context, this paper investigates the driving forces behind national and regional HCE changes employing a temporal Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model. It also analyses interregional discrepancies in HCE using a spatial LMDI model. This study decomposes the changes or discrepancies of national and regional HCE from 2000 to 2015 into seven key factors. The temporal analysis indicates that household income is the predominant determinant explaining the increase of HCE, whereas energy intensity is the crucial determinant contributing to the mitigation of HCE. The spatial analysis reveals that the number of households and energy intensity are primary driving forces accountable for growing discrepancies in HCE, followed by household income, energy structure and carbon emission coefficient. The analysis also suggests that resourceful and economically developed regions generally have larger potential for mitigation of HCE. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a complex metabolism disease, which was characterized by metabolic disorders including hyperglycemia, has become a major health problem due to the increasing prevalence worldwide. γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-GC) as an immediate precursor of glutathione (GSH) was originally used for the treatment of sepsis, inflammation bowel disease, and senescence. Here, we evaluated the capacity of γ-GC on diabetes-related metabolic parameters in db/db mice and insulin resistance (IR) amelioration in cells induced by palmitic acid (PA). Our data suggested that γ-GC treatment decreased body weight, reduced adipose tissue size, ameliorated ectopic fat deposition in liver, increased the GSH content in liver, improved glucose control and other diabetes-related metabolic parameters in vivo. Moreover, in vitro experiments showed that γ-GC could maintain the balance of free fatty acids (FFAs) and glucose uptake through regulating the translocation of CD36 and GLUT4 from cytoplasm to plasma membrane. Furthermore, our finding also provided evidence that γ-GC could activate Akt not only via adenylate cyclase (AC)/cAMP/PI3K signaling pathway, but also via IGF-1R/IRS1/PI3K signaling pathway to improve IR and hepatic steatosis. Blocking either of two signaling pathways could not activate Akt activation induced by γ-GC. This unique characteristic ensures the important role of γ-GC in glucose metabolism. Collectively, these results suggested that γ-GC could serve as a candidate dipeptide for the treatment of T2DM and related chronic diabetic complications via activating AC and IGF-1R/IRS1/PI3K/Akt signaling pathways to regulate CD36 and GLUT4 trafficking. Due to the tumor heterogeneity, the velocity of blood flow is significantly different in either various malignancy types or in diversified positioning within a certain tumor. However, despite the nanodrugs administered in a systemic manner are transported into tumors through complicated vessel network, the effects of intratumoral blood velocity on the intratumoral accumulation of nanocarriers and its underlying mechanisms still remain largely unexplored so far. Consequently, we herein constructed several animal models with diverse intratumoral blood velocity via regulating the intratumoral coagulation environment (ICE), and subsequently evaluated the instrumental roles they played on intratumoral accumulation and penetration of nanocarriers and drugs. Interestingly, we discovered when the ICE featured an anti-coagulable state, the blood velocity in tumor vessels was consequently increased, leading to the high frequency of nanocarriers flowing through tumor vessels, improved intratumoral penetration of nanocarriers as well as the promoted intratumoral drug concentrations. On the other hand, when the ICE became a hypercoagulable state, the blood velocity in tumor vessels was prominently decreased correspondingly, generating the low frequency of nanocarriers flowing through tumor vessels and massed retention of nanodrugs in tumor vessels, which increased the number of drugs within tumor as well. Therefore, the evidence indicated that the variation in blood flow velocity caused by modifying ICE have different advantages in improving the efficiency of tumor-targeted nano drugs, which might propose a new perspective to consider how tumor-targeting nanodrugs enter solid tumors and further exert efficacious tumor-killing effectiveness under disparate tumor vascular microenvironment. The α/β-Bi 2 O 3 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a novel solvothermal-calcination method. The physical and chemical properties of as-prepared samples were characterized based on XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET, UV–vis DRS and PL techniques. The synthesized α/β-Bi 2 O 3 photocatalyst exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and 96.9% of EE2 was degraded after only 24 min of visible-light irradiation using α/β-Bi 2 O 3 as photocatalyst. The reaction rate constant over α/β-Bi 2 O 3 photocatalyst was 1.42, 2.23, 9.22 and 54.1 times higher than pure β-Bi 2 O 3 , α-Bi 2 O 3 +β-Bi 2 O 3 , α-Bi 2 O 3 and P25 respectively. Effect of catalyst dosage and pH value was investigated. The possible photocatalytic mechanism has been discussed on the basis of the theoretical calculation and the experimental results. α/β-Bi 2 O 3 was a fairly stable and efficient photocatalyst under the studied experimental conditions, proving that the α/β-Bi 2 O 3 photocatalyst was a promising photocatalyst for the practical application. A novel bismuth vanadate-palygorskite (BiVO 4 -Pal) photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the composite was characterized. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity under visible light of this composite to tetracycline hydrochloride were also investigated. The results indicated that BiVO 4 was successfully loaded on the Pal. Pal, as a low cost support, improved the adsorption capacity of the photocatalyst, thus increased the contact possibility with the active radicals, hence, the degradation activity of BiVO 4 was improved. The maximum adsorption capacity of BiVO 4 -Pal for tetracycline (TC), calculated by the Langmuir model at 20 °C, was 33.11 mg·g − 1 . The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constant for BiVO 4 -Pal composites was approximately 2.1 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 , and the photodegradation ratio on the BiVO 4 -Pal composite was 1.4 times greater than that of pure BiVO 4 . In addition, the recovery of the BiVO 4 -Pal composite was carried out after the reaction by calcination at 400 °C for 4 h. The test showed that the prepared BiVO 4 -Pal catalyst was stable during the photodegradation of TC. An efficient decoloration method for polysaccharides from the sprouts of Toona sinensis (A. Juss.) Roem (PSTS) by anion exchange macroporous resins (AEMR) was investigated in the present paper. The results suggested that D941 resin offered better decoloration efficiency than other tested resins. Based on single-factor experiments, the optimal decoloration parameters of D941 resin were obtained as follows: temperature of 45 °C, sample initial concentration of 30 mg/ml, pH value of 8.5, static decoloration time of 90 min, dynamic decoloration processing volume of 5.5 BV with the flow rate of 2 BV/h. Decoloration ratio, PSTS recovery ratio and selectivity coefficient were 91.94 ± 1.23%, 90.05 ± 2.35% and 10.92 ± 0.63, respectively. Most of pigment impurities were successfully removed from PSTS solutions after treated by D941 resin, and there was no significant difference in carbohydrate concentration, characteristic groups and molecular weight. Acute lung injury / acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) or pulmonary fibrosis (PF) has been regarded as a global health issue with high mortality and limited drug therapy. Clinical evidence suggests that undesired macrophage polarization (M) is the main factor driving the development of ALI/ARDS, and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) has been considered an important determinant of M polarization. Accordingly, we proposed a hypothesis that restoration of ER homeostasis would effectively balance the homeostasis of M and prevent ALI from progressing to pulmonary fibrosis (PF). To this end, we designed a multistage targeted nanomicelle mainly based on hyaluronic acid (HA) and α-tocopherol succinate (α-TOS) (named as HSST or pHSST with peptide modified) to load ERS inhibitor (KIRA6, K) and anti-inflammatory drug (Dexamethasone, Dex) respectively. When inflammation occurred, K-loaded pHSST (K@pHSST) and Dex-loaded HSST (Dex@HSST) firstly achieved lung targeting by "hitchhiking" myeloid M and neutrophils (Neu) that patrol in the blood and then achieved inflammation-associated cells targeting through a CD44 receptor-ligand-mediated mode by HA. For K@pHSST, at the same time, the ER-targeting molecule (Pardaxin, Par) was used to modify the nanomicelles for tertiary ER-targeting effect and specifically delivering of the K to ER. While in response to high-level intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), Dex@HSST disintegrated due to the reductive α-tocopherol succinate (α-TOS) and disulfide bond. The released Dex exerted anti-inflammatory effects and promoted type 2 M cells (M2) polarization via activating intracellular glucocorticoid receptors. Through the combined administration of Dex@HSST and K@pHSST, this strategy could effectively reduce ROS, limit cytokine storm, restore ER homeostasis, reverse imbalanced M polarization, and fundamentally resolve ALI and prevent PF. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the protective effects of polysaccharides from (PGL) Ganoderma lucidum on bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in rats. Our study demonstrated that treatment with PGL of 100–300 mg/kg for 28 days led to significant reduction in the pulmonary index, inflammatory cell infiltration and collagen deposition in rats with bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis, which was associated with increased levels of glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase and decreased contents of malondialdehyde and hydroxyproline in the lung. These results indicated that PGL played a positive protective role in the pulmonary fibrosis and its possible mechanism was to improve lung antioxidant ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rejection behavior of five kinds of phthalate acid ester (PAEs) including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) from water sources using lab-fabricated hollow fiber nanofiltration (NF) membranes were investigated. Adsorption kinetic behaviors of PAEs were studied as well as the different operation parameters on the rejection of PAEs. The results showed that the times in which PAEs reach saturation adsorption on membrane surface are different. The equilibrium time increased with the molecular weight of the PAE increase. After the PAE reached adsorption equilibrium, the rejection rates of DMP, DEP, DBP, DnOP and DEHP by NF membranes were 82.3%, 86.7%, 91.5%, 95.1% and 95.4%, respectively. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the characterization of a novel polysaccharide from the flesh of Cipangopaludina chinensis , named CCPS n . The results found CCPS n was a white powder, readily soluble in hot water and slightly soluble in water. CCPS n was a homopolysaccharide composed of d -glucose ( d -Glc) with molecular weight of 91.1 kDa. Based on analysis of UV–visible, FT-IR, periodic acid oxidation, Smith degradation, methylation, GM-MS and NMR, the structure of CCPS n was elucidated as follows: the backbone was composed of (1→3) linked α- d -Glc. The branches, consisting of a single (1→3) linked α- d -Glc units and terminal α- d -Glc-4-O-SO 3 − , were attached to the main chain at C-4 positions. The degree of branching was calculated to be about 16.73%. The C-1 of terminal α- d -Glc-4-O-SO 3 − was linked to O-3 of (1→3) linked α- d -Glc in the branches. A palygorskite (Pal)-supported Cu 2 O–TiO 2 heterojunction composite (Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal) was successfully prepared. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the composite was characterized, and the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using this composite was also investigated. The results showed that a layer of TiO 2 − Cu 2 O was successfully loaded on the surface of Pal. The Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal composite had a specific surface area of 93 m 2 ·g − 1 , mesoporous features, and a uniform slit channel. The composite possessed twofold removal ability to TC, including adsorptive capability for the separation and solar-light illuminate photocatalytic in degradation. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal for TC was 113.6 mg·g − 1 at 20 °C as calculated by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constant of 50 mL of TC with an initial concentration of 30 mg·L − 1 reached 0.0129 min − 1 when the Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal concentration was 1.0 g·L − 1 . The total removal rate of TC reached 88.81% in the presence of Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal. In addition, the composite could be regenerated by calcination at 400 °C and recycled more than three times, which is useful for practical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a global healthcare problem and socioeconomic issue that is primarily driven by chronic and/or excessive alcohol consumption. Upon alcohol exposure, parenchymal hepatocytes (HCs) up-regulate endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-localized monooxygenase Cytochrome P450 family 2 subfamily E member 1 (CYP2E1) to accelerate the metabolism of ethanol (EtOH), which concurrently exacerbates the production and accumulation of toxic metabolic intermediates, especially reactive oxygen species (ROS), playing a decisive role in the initiation and perpetuation of alcohol-induced liver injury. ALD patients without timely intervention may develop a spectrum of metabolic and functional disorders in the liver, including hepatic steatosis, hepatitis, fibrosis, and even cirrhosis. However, up to now, there have been no FDA-approved pharmacological or nutritional therapeutics for treating patients with ALD, and an effective amelioration of alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity with satisfactory biosafety is still demanding. In this study, antioxidant Vitamin E-incorporating nanoemulsions modified with ER-targetable small molecule p-dodecylbenzene sulfonamide (p-DBSN) was constructed to load and deliver CYP2E1 inhibitor Clomethiazole (CMZ) to the ER of HCs for site-specific inhibition, which displayed remarkable hepatoprotective effects against chronic alcohol exposure without off-target toxicity, both intravenously injected and orally administrated. Generally, our work may provide a promising nanoplatform for reversing ALD. [Display omitted] In immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), tumor-infiltrating DCs (TIDCs) feature a redundant lipid accumulation, overwhelming reactive oxygen species (ROS), and hyperactivated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Herein, we revealed that our KIRA6 loaded α-Tocopherol nanoemulsion (KT-NE) significantly blocked lipid accumulation and revived TIDCs by concurrent inhibition of ER stress and ROS, which might contribute centrally to reset the systemic anti-tumor immune landscape and abrogate tumor progression ultimately. Dendritic cells (DCs), particularly tumor-infiltrating DCs (TIDCs), are critical to the orchestration of T cell-dependent anti-tumor immune response. The TIDCs with functional defects usually accumulate excessive lipid, characterized with both aberrantly endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress. In this study, we generate a KIRA6 loaded α-Tocopherol nanoemulsion (KT-NE), which concurrently inhibits ER stress sensor inositol-requiring kinase 1α (IRE1α)-X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in dysfunctional lipid-laden TIDCs. As a result, KT-NE prominently mitigates the XBP1- and ROS-triggered lipid accumulation of TIDCs, which reactivates TIDCs and rehabs their capacity of expanding and stimulating tumor-specific T cells. Moreover, both KT-NE treated TIDCs (adoptive transfer) and KT-NE itself could significantly restore the efficacy of DC-mediated immunotherapy and ease tumor burden in malignant ovarian cancer (OvCa)-bearing mice. In conclusion, co-inhibiting hyperactivated XBP1 and redundant intracellular ROS though KT-NE may be a potent therapeutic strategy to ameliorate the ineffective DCs, reverse hostile TME, evoke robust anti-tumor immunity, and extend host progression-free survival ultimately.
