Executives of information officers polled agree that rapid and accurate decision-making are essential to organizational agility and data plays an important role in decision making process. With Advanced information technologies, collecting data can be ubiquitously. However, the current volume of data accumulated in hospitals has exceeded the capacity of their medical information systems, not to mention using the data to make decisions. Hospitals started to employ business intelligence systems (BIS) to extract correct, timely, and useful information for hospital decision-makers. Most studies in the area focus on the establishment and related benefits of BIS. This research aims to evaluate the BIS maturity and its influences on decision quality to reveal the BIS impacts on hospital agility. To test the research model, opinions were collected by distributing questionnaires to clinical and administrative decision-makers who had experiences of using BIS in hospitals. The results showed that medical information quality was significantly influenced by BIS maturity. Furthermore, medical information quality exerted a significant effect on medical decision quality, BIS usage, and user satisfaction. Objectives To investigate whether individuals with autism have an increased risk for cancer relative to the general population. Study design We enrolled patients with autistic disorder from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database in years 1997-2011. A total of 8438 patients diagnosed with autism were retrieved from the Registry for Catastrophic Illness Patients database. The diagnosis of cancers was also based on the certificate of catastrophic illness, which requires histological confirmation. The risk of cancer among the autism cohort was determined with a standardized incidence ratio (SIR). Results During the observation period, cancer occurred in 20 individuals with autism, which was significantly higher than a total number of expected cancers with a SIR estimate of 1.94 (95% CI 1.18-2.99). The number of cancer in males was greater than the expected number with a SIR of 1.95 (1.11-3.16), but no excess risk was found for females with a SIR of 1.91 (0.52-4.88). Cancer developed more than expected in individuals age 15-19 years with the SIR of 3.58 (1.44-7.38), but did not differ in other age range groups. The number of cancers of genitourinary system was significantly in excess of the expected number (SIR 4.15; 95% CI 1.13-10.65), and increased risk was found in ovarian cancer with SIR of 9.21 (1.12-33.29). Purpose: The aim of our study was to evaluate the overall cancer risk among patients with the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by using a nationwide population-based data set.Methods: We obtained data on newly diagnosed IBS patients (age ≥ 20 years) without antecedent cancer from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for the period between 2000 and 2010. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated for various types of cancer in the IBS patients.Results: A total of 1,043 people among the 29,838 IBS patients had developed cancer, and the follow-up was 139,185 person-years (median, 4.56 years), leading to a significantly increased SIR (1.18; 95% confidence interval [CI]) = 1.11-1.26) among all cancer types. However, after excluding cancer that developed within the first year after IBS diagnosis, the increased SIR of overall cancer was nonsignificant. In particular, the IBS patients exhibited an increased risk of cancers of the colon and rectum (SIR = 1.51; 95% CI = 1.31-1.73), liver and biliary tract (SIR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.21-1.62), pancreas (SIR = 1.56; 95% CI = 1.02-2.28), and kidney (SIR = 1.56; 95% CI = 1.10-2.15).Conclusions: An increased SIR in IBS patients was observed only within the first year of IBS diagnosis. The findings of this study might have resulted from detection bias, localized symptoms, or paraneoplastic syndromes associated with IBS-like symptoms. Purpose: To investigate the risk of cancer among patients with nonapnea sleep disorders (SDs).Methods: We included newly diagnosed SD patients aged 20 years and older without antecedent cancer between 2000 and 2010 from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of cancers were calculated to compare the cancer incidence of patients with SD with that of the general population.Results: During the 10-year study period, 2062 cancers developed among 63,381 SD patients, who were observed for 382,826 person-years (median follow-up of 6.23 years). The SIR for all cancers was 1.19 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14e1.24). For specific cancer types, SD patients exhibited an increased SIR for liver and lung cancers (1.44; 95% CI, 1.28e1.61 and 1.34; 95% CI, 1.18e1.51, respectively).Conclusions: We observed that overall cancer risk is increased among Asian SD patients. In terms of individual cancers, the risks of liver and lung cancers were elevated. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of increased liver and lung cancers among SD patients in Taiwan.
