12. Proton decay of 108 I and its significance for the termination of the astrophysical rp-process

Abstract

Employing the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer and the implantation-decay-decay correlation technique, a weak 0.50(21)% proton decay branch was identified in 108 I for the first time. The 108 I proton-decay width is consistent with a hindered l=2 emission, suggesting a d [Formula presented] origin. Using the extracted 108 I proton-decay Q value of 597(13) keV, and the Q α values of the 108 I and 107 Te isotopes, a proton-decay Q value of 510(20) keV for 104 Sb was deduced. Similarly to the 112,113 Cs proton-emitter pair, the Q p (I108) value is lower than that for the less-exotic neighbor 109 I, possibly due to enhanced proton-neutron interactions in N≈Z nuclei. In contrast, the present Q p (Sb104) is higher than that of 105 Sb, suggesting a weaker interaction energy. For the present Q p (Sb104) value, network calculations with the one-zone X-ray burst model Mazzocchi et al. (2007) [18] predict no significant branching into the Sn-Sb-Te cycle at 103 Sn.

Abstract

Abstract: The lifetime of an excited state above a weakly populated isomer in the proton-unbound odd–odd nucleus 144Ho has been measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift method. This measurement represents the first differential-plunger lifetime measurement to utilize recoil-isomer tagging. The first excited state above the two-quasiparticle isomer was determined to have a lifetime of . Potential energy surface calculations, based on the configuration-constrained blocking method, predict the isomeric state to have γ-soft triaxial-nuclear shape with . The lifetime of the state can be understood from these calculations if there is a degree of rotational alignment in this band, with the K value being lower than the bandhead spin. However, the validity of the K quantum number with large predicted triaxiality and gamma softness requires further theoretical study. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Fast-timing measurements at the focal plane of a separator can suffer from poor timing resolution. This is due to the variations in time-of-flight (ToF) for photons travelling to a given detector, which arise from the changes in the implantation positions of the recoil nuclei emitting the γ rays of interest. In order to minimise these effects on timing measurements, a procedure is presented that improves fast-timing data by performing ToF corrections on an event-by-event basis. This method was used to correct data collected with an array of eight LaBr 3 detectors, which detected γ rays from spatially distributed 138Gd recoil-implants at the focal plane of the Recoil-Ion-Transport-Unit (RITU) spectrometer. The Generalised Centroid Difference (GCD) method was used to extract a lifetime from data in conjunction with a new procedure to calibrate the time walk. The lifetime of the first 2 + state in 138Gd, populated by the decay of the K π = 8 − isomeric state, was measured to be 229(24) ps using the ToF-corrected data, which is consistent within three standard deviations to the literature value. The results together with Monte-Carlo simulations show that the ToF correction procedure reduced the uncertainty in the measured lifetimes by 3 % in the case of the spatially distributed nuclei at the focal plane of RITU. However, ∼ 12 % has been estimated for a similar experiment when using a larger focal plane i.e. the Super-FRS at the FAIR facility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Aerosol samples have been studied under different background conditions using gamma-ray coincidence and low-background gamma-ray singles spectrometric techniques with High-Purity Germanium detectors. Conventional low-background gamma-ray singles counting is a competitive technique when compared to the gamma–gamma coincidence approach in elevated background conditions. However, measurement of gamma–gamma coincidences can clearly make the identification of different nuclides more reliable and efficient than using singles spectrometry alone. This very neutron-deficient isotope, 18 neutrons away from the stable gold isotope 197 79Au118, was studied by a combination of α-decay and isomer-decay spectroscopy employing the ritu gas-filled separator and the great focal-plane spectrometer at the University of Jyväskylä. A new isomer with was observed and states associated with , , and structures were revealed. The implications of these results on the systematics of and intruder structures in the odd-mass gold isotopes are discussed. The minimum of the parabolic trend is at , i.e. exactly at the mid-shell point and the structure is dropping in energy relative to the with decreasing mass number. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A new vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA (Mass Analysing Recoil Apparatus) is under design and construction at the Department of Physics in the University of Jyväskylä. The separator is intended to separate reaction products from the primary beam in mass region below . The ion-optical configuration of the separator will be QQQDEDM, where a magnetic quadrupole (Q) triplet is followed by an electrostatic deflector (DE) and a magnetic dipole (DM). The total length of MARA will be less than 7.0m and the first order resolving power more than 250 for a beam spot size of 2mm. Abstract: The observation of the new nuclide 159 75Re84 provides important insights into the evolution of single-particle structure and the mass surface in heavy nuclei beyond the proton drip line. This nuclide, 26 neutrons away from the nearest stable rhenium isotope, was synthesised in the reaction 106Cd(58Ni, ) and identified via its proton radioactivity using the ritu gas-filled separator and the great focal-plane spectrometer. Comparisons of the measured proton energy () and decay half-life () with values calculated using the WKB method indicate that the proton is emitted from an state. Abstract

The level scheme of 18176Os has been investigated with the 150Nd(36S,5n) reaction. The low-K rotational bands built upon the 9/2+[624], 7/2−[514] and 1/2−[521] neutron configurations have been extended and other new bands established. The configurations of these low-K bands are discussed within the framework of the cranked-shell model. The lifetimes for some of the states in the 9/2+[624] and 1/2−[521] collective rotational bands were also measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation method. The large deformations deduced are found to be consistent with those predicted from theoretical Total Routhian Surface calculations. These results support the idea that for these low-K states the nuclear shape is axially symmetric and allows the K quantum number to be defined and the associated K-selection rule to be upheld. This behaviour apparently contrasts with that of the higher-K states in 181Os. In the higher-spin regime, two new high-K intrinsic states, with Kπ=37/2+ and Kπ=41/2+, were established, along with the fragmented decay of a Kπ=33/2− intrinsic state. The configurations and excitation energies of these experimentally determined intrinsic states are found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations based on a fixed shape Nilsson model plus BCS pairing. The structures on top of these intrinsic states do, however, show very different behaviour. A relatively regular high-K rotational band was observed on top of the Kπ=41/2+ state but not for the other newly-established intrinsic states. Theoretical configuration-constrained potential energy surface calculations suggest that the irregular transition sequence above the Kπ=37/2+ intrinsic bandhead state, the limited excitations observed above the other intrinsic states and the observation of fragmented and non-hindered decays, are due to these configurations being subject to an appreciable γ softness. These calculations reveal that the Kπ=41/2+ configuration is less susceptible to distortions in the γ plane than any of the other high-K states. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
